Piña Colada

August 7, 2024

The Piña Colada is the drink that defines tropical relaxation. With its smooth blend of coconut, pineapple, and rum, it’s like a mini vacation in a glass. This cocktail is the perfect balance of sweet, creamy, and fruity, making it the ideal drink for warm days by the pool or fun nights with friends.

At its core, a classic Piña Colada is made with three simple ingredients: rum, coconut cream or coconut milk, and pineapple juice. The rich, velvety texture of the coconut cream brings a creamy smoothness, while the pineapple juice adds a refreshing tang and sweetness. The rum provides a warm, mellow kick that ties it all together, giving the drink its signature tropical flair.

What makes this cocktail stand out is its versatility. You can blend it with ice for a frozen, slushy version that’s perfect for summer days or simply mix it with ice for a chilled, relaxed feel. Either way, it’s a drink that’s both refreshing and indulgent.

For the garnish, a slice of pineapple, a maraschino cherry, or even a small umbrella can add that extra festive touch. If you’re in the mood to get creative, you can also add a squeeze of lime to balance the sweetness or a splash of grenadine for a pop of color and a hint of extra sweetness. The Piña Colada is easy to make but still feels fancy and special every time.

Though it’s often associated with beach vacations and tropical getaways, the Piña Colada is the perfect drink to bring a bit of that sunshine vibe to your home. It’s perfect for casual gatherings, backyard barbecues, or even just sipping on a quiet afternoon when you want to treat yourself.

Whether you’re in the mood for something sweet, refreshing, or just a little bit indulgent, the Piña Colada never fails to deliver that tropical bliss with every sip.

I don’t get it. Shouldn’t a piña colada be just rum, coconut, and pineapple? This version has heavy cream so it’s basically dessert in a glass… which might be fine, but it’s not what I expected.

I get what you mean, but adding a splash of cream can make it way smoother and more “tropical dessert” than straight-up cocktail. I think the key flavors are still rum + coconut + pineapple—cream just rounds it out.

  2. 5 stars
I made this tonight and it’s dangerously good. Super creamy and the fresh pineapple really pops. I used a little more ice for extra thickness—perfect.

    1. User avatar Deep Thought says:

      5 stars
Dangerously good is the best kind of review 😄 The fresh pineapple juice must make it way brighter than canned. I’ll try the extra ice trick for thicker texture!

    2. User avatar Ha Dahamar says:

      3 stars
Wait—are you sure it’s 6 oz pineapple juice *fresh*? I used bottled once and it tasted kinda flat… also I think I added too much ice and it got watery. How much ice did you end up using?

  3. User avatar quinn.mueller20 says:

    5 stars
Super easy to make—blender did all the work. I was a little worried about the coconut cream + heavy cream, but it turned out creamy without being too heavy.

  4. User avatar andres.kirlin94 says:

    4 stars
Simple and refreshing! My kids loved it (minus the rum, of course). Will be making this all summer! ☀️

    1. User avatar dominica.ledner says:

      3 stars
Sounds great, but not really a kids drink, right? Just saying… they don’t need to try the rum one day haha.

    2. 5 stars
I’m so glad to hear your kids loved it! Even without the rum, it sounds like a perfect summer drink. 🍍☀️ Enjoy!

  5. 4 stars
So easy, even my kids helped out! Great summer drink! 🍍🥥

Do I have to use heavy cream? Can I just use coconut milk? Asking for a friend.

  7. User avatar trenton.reilly75 says:

    3 stars
I followed the measurements exactly and it turned out way too sweet for me. Next time I’ll cut back the pineapple juice or use less coconut cream.

  8. User avatar mckinley.reilly75 says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about using both coconut cream and heavy cream—feels like too much cream. Tastes fine, but it’s definitely heavy. Next time I’ll try half the heavy cream.

  9. 4 stars
Used coconut milk instead and it was still good. But like, why heavy cream tho?

    1. User avatar jonnie.green84 says:

      5 stars
I know right? Heavy cream is so extra! Coconut milk is a great substitute, and it still tastes amazing!

  10. 4 stars
Is coconut cream the same as coconut milk? Asking for a friend. 🤔

  11. 2 stars
Not really my thing. A bit too sweet for my taste. Maybe I’ll try reducing the pineapple juice next time.

  12. User avatar wilfredo.dibbert1971 says:

    4 stars
Tasted amazing! My friends drank it all super fast. The cherry on top was a really nice touch too!

    1. 5 stars
Sounds delicious! I can’t wait to try it at my next party. Thanks for sharing!

  13. User avatar Dr. Ellyn Hintz says:

    2 stars
Isn’t this just a fancy smoothie? My grandma said so. 🤷‍♂️

  14. User avatar Dr. Adaline Gibson says:

    5 stars
YUM! I used frozen pineapple instead of fresh, and it was still amazing. Can’t wait to have another one! 🍍

  15. User avatar jefferey.reichel47 says:

    3 stars
Mine turned out separated for a minute (like oil slick vibes). I think I didn’t blend long enough. After an extra 20-30 seconds it finally looked right.

  16. User avatar gustavo.armstrong1991 says:

    5 stars
Wow, the measurements are actually clear. I like that it’s not overcomplicated. Chilled glass + fresh pineapple slice garnish = instant vacation vibes.

  17. 2 stars
I don’t think rums are supposed to mix with ice cream… I mean cream?! That’s just wrong!

    1. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

      4 stars
I totally disagree! Ice cream and rum can make a great combo if done right! Ever tried rum cake? It’s delicious!

Yuck! This was way too sweet for me. I expected it to be more fruity. Never again! 😖

    1. 4 stars
I actually thought it was perfect! Sweet drinks are the best, especially on a hot day. Maybe you should try using less juice next time? 🤷‍♂️

  20. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

I tried this recipe at a party and everyone loved it. I’ll definitely make it again!

  23. User avatar buford.bednar says:

    5 stars
Followed the steps exactly and it came out smooth, not icy at all. I did need to blend a tiny bit longer because my ice was chunkier, but otherwise perfect.

  24. User avatar Ricky Adams says:

    2 stars
It’s okay. I prefer my cocktails with a little kick. More rum next time!

  25. User avatar jake.abshire says:

    2 stars
Not a fan tbh – too much cream for my taste. I prefer mine with just rum and pineapple juice.

  26. User avatar Jeffrey Walter PhD says:

    5 stars
Absolutely delicious! Perfect for summer parties. 🌞

    1. User avatar Aron Cummings says:

      3 stars
Looks easy, but is it really that good? 🤔 I tried a similar recipe and it was too sweet.

    2. User avatar don.osinski95 says:

      5 stars
I can’t wait to try this! It sounds so refreshing for a hot day!

  27. User avatar mervin.wyman says:

    5 stars
Honestly, it tastes like dessert. I like that there’s both coconut cream and heavy cream; it’s not watery at all. Next time I might add a tiny pinch of salt to deepen the flavor.

    1. User avatar lavern.simonis says:

      3 stars
Hmm dessert-y, ok, but I feel like piña colada is supposed to be more… tart? Maybe the pineapple juice brand matters. I’d try less coconut cream or add some lime next time. Also, does the recipe use fresh pineapple juice only?

    2. User avatar ella.casper says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—mine always comes out more like a dessert than a drink. That coconut + cream combo is the secret. I love your salt idea; I bet it’ll really make the pineapple pop.

  28. User avatar stan.bashirian1982 says:

    4 stars
Is there an alcohol-free version? My kids would love this drink without the rum! 🌴

  29. User avatar noella.weimann45 says:

    2 stars
I tried substituting with almond milk and it didn’t work. Ughhhh!

    1. User avatar kaycee.quitzon43 says:

      4 stars
Almond milk is too thin for this recipe! You need the creaminess of coconut cream to get that classic Piña Colada taste. Maybe try with real milk next time?

  30. 4 stars
I’m not usually a cocktail person, but this was easy and tasted legit. The garnish is cute too—pineapple slice makes it look fancy.

  31. 2 stars
Too much cream! Next time I’ll just use crushed pineapple. 🙅‍♂️

  32. 3 stars
Too much coconut for my taste. I prefer a more fruity flavor.

    1. User avatar dawna.wunsch81 says:

      4 stars
I get what you’re saying! A little less coconut would definitely let the pineapple shine more. Maybe try adding some extra juice next time?

  33. 5 stars
Pina coladas make me feel like I’m on a beach, even in my kitchen! 🍹

  34. User avatar paz.greenfelder89 says:

    3 stars
Yummy! But maybe too much rum? I felt a lil dizzy after one. Just sayin’

    1. 3 stars
Nah, you just gotta build your tolerance! Rum is the essence of Piña Colada! 😂

    2. User avatar tonya.koss says:

      4 stars
I agree! A little less rum could make it perfect. I like my drinks a bit lighter. 🍹

  35. User avatar rich.landlord says:

    1 star
I don’t really like coconut, so this was not for me. My buddy loved it tho.

  36. User avatar merlene.rempel says:

    3 stars
I tried it, but my blender ate the ice and it came out a bit gritty. Next time I’ll crush the ice finer or blend a little longer. Flavor was still yummy though.

    1. 3 stars
My blender did that too once. I think the pineapple juice maybe makes it freeze-ish? I switched to using smaller ice cubes and it helped. Still tastes good, so I’m not mad.

    2. User avatar season.flatley says:

      5 stars
Ugh, classic blender betrayal 😅 I’d definitely crush it more (almost snow-fine) and blend a bit longer. Also make sure your crushed ice isn’t chunky—chunks = grit.

  37. 3 stars
I followed the recipe, but it didn’t taste very strong! Where’s the rum? Might need to add more next time.

  38. User avatar santina.beahan says:

    5 stars
Made this for a party and everybody loved it! Will definitely make again.

  39. User avatar adrian.bashirian82 says:

    2 stars
Piña colada is like my fav drink, but this recipe is just too messy to make. 😩

    1. User avatar Zaphod Beeblebrox says:

      4 stars
I totally get what you mean! The mess can be a real hassle, but it’s so worth it for that taste! 🍹

  40. 2 stars
I followed the recipe but it turned out too sweet for my taste. 🙁

  41. User avatar jarvis.bernier88 says:

    3 stars
This was too sweet for my taste. Maybe less coconut cream next time?

  42. User avatar broderick.lakin93 says:

    1 star
I just wanna say this is NOT a real piña colada if it has cream in it. Stick to the classics.

  43. User avatar loren.adams29 says:

    3 stars
Uh, I think there’s too much cream in this. Aren’t Piña Coladas supposed to be lighter? 🤔

  44. 5 stars
5 stars! Tastes just like vacation in a glass! 🍍🍹

  45. 3 stars
This is okay, but 1 oz heavy cream seems like a lot. Mine separated slightly after a few minutes, so I had to drink fast. Flavor is nice, texture is the only issue.

  46. User avatar amada.bartell1976 says:

    5 stars
Wow! Just wow. This is the best drink I ever made! It’s not too hard to make and tastes like heaven. 😍

  47. User avatar shawn.zieme59 says:

    3 stars
Kinda skeptical about the heavy cream. Doesn’t sound very tropical. 🤔

    1. User avatar errol.pouros1983 says:

      4 stars
I get your point! But the heavy cream makes it super creamy, which some people love. 🌴🥥

  48. User avatar w00d_ch0p says:

    3 stars
It’s okay… but I think 1/2 cup crushed ice is not enough. Mine was more like a thick smoothie than a cocktail. Next time I’ll add more ice.

  49. User avatar chara.schmitt says:

    4 stars
Great recipe! But can we use vodka instead of rum?

    1. User avatar linda.volkman70 says:

      4 stars
I think vodka would totally change the flavor! Stick with rum for the true piña colada vibe.

    2. User avatar Jamie Flatley says:

      3 stars
Why not? Vodka’s just like, a plain alcohol, right? Might work fine!

  50. 4 stars
Crazy easy. I didn’t have fresh pineapple juice so I used canned pineapple juice and it was still tasty. The garnish makes it look fancy for like zero effort.

    1. User avatar Nightmare says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—this is one of those “why is it so good?” drinks. I’ve done it with canned before too and it still works. The garnish really sells it 😄

  51. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    4 stars
I used rum that’s been sitting in my cupboard for ages. Still turned out yummy!

  52. User avatar Lumberjack says:

    2 stars
I don’t drink rum, but I bet swapping it for coconut water would still taste tropical. Or am I totally missing the point? Either way, looks refreshing.

    1. User avatar donnell.champlin58 says:

      4 stars
Yeah, you *are* kinda missing the point—piña colada is traditionally rum-forward. Coconut water won’t match the creaminess either since the recipe uses coconut cream + heavy cream. If you want a non-alcohol version, try replacing the rum with coconut cream or just extra pineapple juice, but keep the coconut/cream ratio for that smoothie texture.

  53. User avatar Dan Streetmentioner says:

    2 stars
Tried once, looked great with the pineapple slice, but I swear it tasted more like tropical candy than rum. Still pretty though!

  54. User avatar sergio.deckow says:

    4 stars
Super easy to make! Throwing everything in a blender is always my style.

  55. User avatar Falmer Shaman says:

    5 stars
Yummy! Can I use frozen pineapple instead? Asking for a friend. 😅

  56. User avatar garret.grant73 says:

    2 stars
Not a fan. It’s too creamy for my taste. I prefer mine more fruity.

    1. 4 stars
I totally get that! Creamy isn’t for everyone. Have you tried adding more fruit to it? Maybe blend some extra pineapple or add mango? That could give it a refreshing twist!

  57. User avatar timothy.terry35 says:

    5 stars
This is dangerously good. I used fresh pineapple and it tastes way more bright than the bottled juice versions. Super creamy too—like a dessert but drinkable.

  58. User avatar ALTplusF4 says:

    5 stars
    So good!!!

  59. 4 stars
I made it with canned pineapple juice once and it wasn’t great, so fresh is key. Also, I wish it told you how cold the glass should be—mine was “cold enough” lol.

  60. User avatar jacelyn.kshlerin51 says:

    3 stars
Is this recipe even real? Like, who drinks those? Just seems too fancy. Probably tastes good tho.

  61. User avatar lilian.mitchell97 says:

    5 stars
This Piña Colada recipe is fantastic! It’s like a vacation in a glass. I added a little more coconut cream for extra flavor, and it was perfect! 🍹

  62. User avatar julio.torphy0 says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, I’m skeptical about using both coconut cream and heavy cream—seems like it could get cloying. Still, if it’s balanced with fresh pineapple juice, maybe it works.

  63. User avatar joe_banana says:

    5 stars
This piña colada is simply the best! I added some extra pineapple and it was amazing!

  64. User avatar burl.littel30 says:

    3 stars
I tried it but didn’t have fresh pineapple juice, used canned instead. Tasted okay, but not great.

  65. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    2 stars
Too much cream for my liking. I like it light and fruity. 😕

  66. User avatar Mr. Prosser says:

    2 stars
I don’t know, guys. Can you really use heavy cream in a Piña Colada? Seems a bit off to me…

  67. User avatar krystyna.koch1973 says:

    3 stars
Heavy cream + coconut cream feels a little extra—like a milkshake pretending to be a cocktail. But honestly? It tastes good. Not mad at it.

  68. User avatar maud.botsford49 says:

    4 stars
Calling it a Piña Colada without adding any sugar feels brave 😅. My coconut cream was already sweet, so it worked. If your coconut cream is unsweetened, you might need a touch of simple syrup.

  69. 1 star
Tasted kinda weird to me. Maybe I don’t like rum? But hey, at least the cherry was good.

  70. User avatar dana.bernhard28 says:

    3 stars
Hmm I didn’t have coconut cream, so I used cottage cheese instead. Not the same but hey it worked.

    1. 2 stars
I guess you gotta use what you got! But wow, cottage cheese in a piña colada? Are you sure it was good?

    2. User avatar Duncan Idaho says:

      4 stars
Cottage cheese? Really? That’s a bold choice! I would never think of that. I’m curious how it turned out!

  71. User avatar clay.feest says:

This piña colada recipe is fantastic! Tastes just like the ones I had in Hawaii. Will definitely make this again.

  74. User avatar norma.waters80 says:

I followed the recipe but mine turned out too watery. Maybe my pineapple juice was too thin? Not sure. 🤔

  75. User avatar pierre.lakin47 says:

I don’t know, I feel like it needs something more. Maybe a little lime juice? 🤔

  76. User avatar Deep Thought says:

Good, but I’m not a fan of cream in my drinks. Can I skip the heavy cream? 🤷‍♂️

    1. User avatar wade.skiles6 says:

      5 stars
You can definitely skip the heavy cream! Just add a bit more coconut cream if you want it creamy. 😄

  77. 5 stars
Had it at a party and it was gone in seconds! Everyone loved it! 😍🥥🍍

  78. User avatar jed.langosh75 says:

  82. User avatar Glossu "Beast" Rabban says:

I don’t drink alcohol but this looks so good! Maybe I’ll make a non-alcoholic version?

  83. User avatar mathew.koelpin58 says:

    3 stars
It was okay, I wish it had more pineapple flavor. Next time I’ll add extra juice.

  84. 4 stars
Tried something similar before, but I usually find the heavy cream makes it too thick. Does 1 oz heavy cream really stay balanced with 6 oz juice?

  85. 5 stars
This Piña Colada recipe is so good! It took me back to my vacation on the beach. Definitely making this again!

  86. 4 stars
Delicious! The texture is like a creamy slush. I served it to friends and everyone asked for the recipe.

  87. User avatar charlie.bogisich says:

    2 stars
Meh… way too sweet for my palate. Also I only had regular ice not crushed so it was thicker and kinda weird texture. Still, my friends liked it.

    1. User avatar mariella.goldner30 says:

      5 stars
Totally get it—pineapple juice + coconut/cream can turn pretty sweet fast. Next time you could try a bit less coconut cream or add a splash more pineapple juice (or even a tiny squeeze of lime) to balance it. And yeah, regular ice can definitely make it thicker—crushed is the move for that smooth texture. Glad your friends still enjoyed it!

  88. User avatar marisa.zemlak0 says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, 1 oz heavy cream + coconut cream sounds like it might be too rich… but it actually balances really well with the pineapple. Good call on chilling the glass too.

    1. User avatar marg.emmerich says:

      5 stars
I was worried about the coconut + heavy cream combo too, but the pineapple juice really cuts through. Chilling the glass makes a difference—nice tip.

    2. User avatar alyce.braun2025 says:

      3 stars
Hmm, 1 oz coconut cream AND 1 oz heavy cream… that’s a lot. Also is it coconut cream or coconut milk? I feel like it could separate if the brands differ.

  89. 4 stars
I’m not a huge rum person, but this one worked. The coconut balances it. I also liked the garnish—made it feel fancy even though it’s easy.

  90. User avatar lady.ziemann1955 says:

    5 stars
This sounds dangerously good. The coconut + pineapple combo is a win, and blending with crushed ice makes it extra smooth. I’m making this for my weekend hangout.

    1. 3 stars
I might be wrong but wouldn’t it be better to use coconut milk instead of coconut cream? Also 6 oz pineapple juice seems a lot—will it turn into more like a smoothie? Still, that garnish idea is cute.

    2. User avatar Restless Draugr says:

      5 stars
Honestly this sounds dangerously good 😅 coconut + pineapple is my favorite combo, and crushed ice always makes it feel extra “bar quality.” Weekend hangout = undefeated.

  91. User avatar humberto.dickinson26 says:

This tastes like a vacation in a glass. The pineapple juice really comes through and the coconut/cream combo is so smooth. I used fresh crushed ice and it was perfect.

Pina colada is just ok. I preferred the one my grandma used to make. This is too creamy!

Tried this for my friend’s birthday—super creamy and the pineapple flavor really pops. I used crushed ice from a bag and it came out smooth. 10/10 for a quick blender drink.

This is the best piña colada recipe I’ve ever tried! So creamy and refreshing. Perfect for hot days!

Pretty good, but mine was a little too thick—maybe my pineapple juice was more concentrated. Still refreshing though. Would make again with a bit more juice or less cream.

Wow. I used canned pineapple juice (didn’t have fresh) and it still came out great. Would absolutely make again for a party.

Meh. It’s fine, but I’ve had better piña coladas. The heavy cream makes it feel a little thick—maybe I should’ve used more ice?

Yeah, that makes sense. Heavy cream can make it feel more like a milkshake than a classic colada—try more ice (or even a slightly smaller pour of cream). I also like chilling everything first.

The ratios seem spot on. I’m not a big fan of super sweet drinks, but the pineapple juice balances the coconut cream well. Would absolutely make again.

Not bad, but I think it needs a touch more rum. Also my blender struggled with the crushed ice a bit, so I had to blend longer.

Uh, why heavy cream? I followed it and it turned out kinda weird and heavy… Like a milkshake but not in a good way. Maybe I’ll try coconut milk next time.

I don’t get why people add heavy cream. It kinda mutes the pineapple flavor for me. Still drinkable though.

That makes sense—heavy cream can definitely dull the brightness of the pineapple. I’ve had better luck using more coconut cream only, or even half-and-half. Still tasty, just a different vibe.

Wait heavy cream? I thought piña coladas were mostly coconut cream/milk + pineapple. If it mutes it, try leaving the heavy cream out and blend with extra crushed ice. Might be closer to what you want.
