Moules Marinières, or “sailor-style mussels,” is one of the most beloved seafood dishes in French cuisine. Originating from the coastal regions of Normandy and Brittany, this recipe features fresh mussels gently steamed in a fragrant broth of white wine, garlic, shallots, and herbs. The result is a light yet deeply flavorful dish that showcases the natural brininess of the sea.
What makes Moules Marinières truly remarkable is its simplicity. With just a few high-quality ingredients and minimal prep time, you can create a dish that feels both rustic and refined. The mussels are cleaned and debearded, then added to a large pot where shallots and garlic have been gently sautéed in butter or olive oil. A splash of dry white wine—such as Muscadet or Sauvignon Blanc—is poured in, infusing the pot with acidity and aroma as it steams the mussels open.
As the mussels cook, they release their juices into the wine, creating a delicate broth that’s rich in umami and subtly sweet. A touch of cream or butter is often stirred in at the end to round out the flavors, while fresh parsley adds a bright, herbal finish.
Moules Marinières is traditionally served with crusty French bread/baguette for dipping into the broth, though it also pairs beautifully with frites (fries) for a Belgian-style twist. A glass of the same dry white wine used in cooking completes the experience, enhancing the dish’s freshness.
Whether served as a light main course or the centerpiece of a summer seafood dinner, Moules Marinières delivers elegance without effort. It’s a perfect example of how simple ingredients, when treated with care, can result in something extraordinary. Fresh, aromatic, and full of ocean flavor, this dish captures the essence of coastal French cooking in every bite.

Ingredients
- 2 kg fresh mussels cleaned and debearded
- 1 cup dry white wine
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 2 shallots finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 2 tbsp fresh parsley chopped

Yum! I followed this to the letter, and it was spot on! Fresh parsley adds so much flavor! Will be making again.
Not a big fan of the flavor. Couldn’t taste the garlic at all.
I think the garlic is important! Maybe try chopping it smaller next time? It should really come through!
Garlic is supozed to be strong, if u can’t taste it maybe your garlic was old? Or maybe the wine overpowered it?
I was skeptical at first since I’ve never cooked mussels before. But it turned out great! Just make sure you don’t overcook them.
I tried this last night and ended up with a desperate kitchen! Wine spilled everywhere! 😅 Still tasted good tho, kinda.
Mussels!? Aren’t those like… shellfish? I don’t eat shellfish, but I do like your style! 😋
Thanks! Yeah, mussels are shellfish, but they’re delicious if you try them! Maybe you can find a substitute? 🤔
This was an amazing recipe! My family loved the mussels! I added a sprinkle of red pepper flakes for a kick.
I’m glad you liked it! The red pepper flakes idea sounds delicious. I might try that next time!
Sounds fancy, but I don’t like mussels. Can’t believe people eat them. 🤢
Mussels are gross!!! How can anybody eat these slimy things? Not for me.
Do I really need that much wine? Seems excessive, not sure about the butter too. Less is more!
Absolutely delicious! My family loved it, and it was so easy to make. I will definitely be making this again!
I’m so glad to hear that! It’s one of my favorites too! What kind of bread did you serve with it?
I dunno, mussels kinda creep me out. How can you eat something that looks like that? 🤔
These mussles look bad but they taste good. Didn’t think I would like ’em!
Wait, aren’t mussels those things that clams come from?.
I’m not convinced by “discard any mussels that do not open” because mine stayed closed even though they smelled fine. Could it be okay? Mine ended up… chewy. I’ll be more strict next time.
OMG! So yummy! I could eat this every day!
Mussels are gross. Eating muddy creatures? No thanks. This recipe sounds dumb.
Very easy to make but I don’t like mussels. My husband loved it though! I’ll give it 4 stars for him.
I don’t know about this… I tried it, but my mussels didn’t open. I might’ve done something wrong, but it was disappointing. 🤷♂️
Don’t worry, it happens to the best of us! Make sure the mussels are really fresh and you should be good on your next try. 🤞
You probably just didn’t cook them long enough! They need a good steam to open up properly. Don’t give up! ⏳
I’m kinda skeptical about using so much wine. Is it really necessary? 🤔
Yummy! 🥰
I’m sorry but I don’t get the point of discarding unopened mussels—sometimes they open later right? Mine never did though so I threw them out.
Great flavors! Paired with some white bread, it’s a perfect meal for summer evenings.
Wow, this is fancy! But I’m not sure about the wine part. Can’t we just do it without it? 😂
Wow, I never thought making mussels could be this simple!! Thanks for sharing!
Really? I tried this and found it way too salty. Maybe I added too much salt? 🤔
I think the salt can vary a lot depending on the butter and broth. Maybe try reducing the salt next time?
Too salty? I thought it was perfect! But everyone’s taste is different, I guess.
These mussels were amazing! The flavor was just perfect. Didn’t even need extra salt! Five stars all the way!
5-7 minutes felt short? I cooked mine like 10 because I was scared they weren’t done. Turned out fine though, just less juicy.
Simple and quick! I added some chili flakes for a kick, turned out great.
Never cooked mussels before, but this recipe made it so simple! Turned out great, thanks!
Could you add a bit of cream for a richer sauce? That sounds better to me.
Why do you need wine? Can’t you just boil them in water? IDK, seems like a waste.
Tasted fantastic! Used shrimp instead of mussels, still awesome!
Yum! I added some chili flakes for a kick. Will do this again for sure!
I tried it, but my mussels didn’t open. Total disaster! What did I do wrong?
Sounds like your mussels were probably dead before cooking! Always check them before you cook. 😟
Mussels? Yuck! Why would anyone eat that? Fishy tastes are gross!
I followed the recipe but found the garlic overpowered the dish. Next time, less garlic for me!
Super easy! I used leftover beer instead of white wine, tasted fine! Mussels are bomb!
This is hands down the best mussels recipe I’ve ever tried! So flavorful and easy to follow. Will definitely make it again! 🍷
This was decent, but where’s the cream? I thought moules marinières had cream in it! Disappointed.
Actually, traditional moules marinières don’t use cream! It’s all about the broth from the mussels and the wine. Give it a try as is next time!
The wine part is confusing. Can you use white grape juice instead? 😅
Sooo good! The white wine made it fabulous. Definitely my new favorite dish to impress guests!
Absolutely delicious! The wine and butter combo is a winner. I’ll definitely be making this again.
I tried this and it was a disaster! The mussels didn’t open and I was left with a pot of sadness. Not making this again.
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about only butter + wine. But it worked! The broth tasted amazing once I dunked bread in it. Next time I’ll add a pinch of chili flakes for fun.
Tried this vibe and yeah—bread dunking is the move 😄 I added chili flakes too and it was perfect. Thanks!
Looks so fancy but so easy! I love it. I used frozen mussles instead tho, hope that don’t matter.
Delish! I served this to my family and they loved it. The garlic and parsley really make a difference. Also, bread is a must! 😋
Pretty solid recipe. I didn’t have enough parsley so I used a little dried—still tasted good, just less fresh.
Nice save with the dried parsley! I’ve done that too when I’m out of fresh—still comes out good, just a bit less bright.
Wait… dried parsley? I feel like it changes the whole dish. Next time try just using the last of the fresh stuff or add a tiny pinch of dried near the end. But hey glad it worked.
I don’t know, but I feel like boiling mussels in wine is not the best way to do it. Doesn’t sound safe, you know? 🤔
Mussels are just gross! My friend loves this dish but I can’t get myself to eat it. Tastes like the ocean. No thanks! 🌊
Cool dish but… my mussels didn’t open. Got scared and threw them away.
I cooked them longer ‘just in case’ and they got kinda rubbery. Recipe looks fine though—my bad. Lol.
I was nervous about cooking times, but 5–7 minutes worked for me. The sauce smelled amazing. Wish I had more parsley though—will definitely add a little extra next round.
Okay but 1 cup wine seems low? I always end up with barely any broth. Maybe my pot is too wide. Flavor was good, just not as soupy as I wanted.
Yeah, I get that. If your pot is wider, the liquid evaporates/cooks off faster, so you end up with less “soup.” I usually use a deeper pot and only stir gently—also, don’t let it boil aggressively after adding the mussels.
Mussels yum, but where my garlic bread at? Need more carbs!
I just made this for dinner and my family loved it! The garlic and parsley gave it such a nice flavor. Will make it again!
Absolutely loved this recipe! The sauce was so good, I dipped all my bread in it. Thanks!
I don’t like mussels, the smell was so strong. Yuck!
I messed up and forgot to discard the ones that didn’t open… don’t do that 😬. But the opened ones were great. Lesson learned.
This recipe is absolutely delicious! The mussels were so fresh and flavorful. I will definitely make it again!
Yum, but I used chicken broth instead of wine because I can’t drink. Still turned out nice!
Instructions were clear, but I messed up. My shellfish is always a bit iffy! Tryin again next time! 🙂
Don’t worry, it happens to the best of us! Shellfish can be tricky sometimes. Just keep practicing! 🙂
You might’ve cooked them too long or not long enough. Be careful with time next time! Good luck!
Made this tonight—so good. The garlic/shallot base is perfect and the wine really shines. I served with extra crusty bread to soak up the broth. Five stars.
So easy and quick! I was surprise how fast it came together. Definitely a keeper! 🙂
Wow, this mussels recipe is simply delish! I never tried cooking them before but they turned out great!
So glad to hear you enjoyed it! Mussels are super easy and taste amazing. Did you serve them with bread? It’s the best way to soak up that sauce!
Made this tonight—so good! The garlic/shallot base smells amazing and the wine sauce is perfect for dipping bread. I did 6 minutes and nearly all opened right on time.
I followed it exactly and mine still needed a couple extra minutes to open. I almost panicked, but they eventually popped. Delicious though.
Mine did the exact same thing—almost panicked too. Next time I’ll wait a little longer before giving up. Also, don’t use old mussels, I guess…
Ugh I totally get that moment 😅 I’ve had some mussels that were stubborn—5 min wasn’t enough, but like you said they popped eventually. Glad they were delicious!
Cooking mussels always feels risky 😅 But I tried anyway and they opened perfectly. The whole pot smelled like a fancy bistro. My family asked for bread again immediately.
I always thought you needed to scrub them for like an hour… yours opened in 5-7 though? also, I usually add a splash of lemon at the end—worth it? Congrats anyway!
That’s the best feeling 😄 Mussels can be so intimidating, but when they open right it’s basically a restaurant in your kitchen. Bread being gone instantly is the correct response!
This is the best mussel recipe I’ve tried! Simple and delicious. 😊
Super easy weeknight recipe. I had shallots only once and used red onion instead—still worked, though it tasted slightly sharper.
I didn’t have wine, used water instead. Worse decision ever. Don’t skip the wine!
Totally agree! The wine really makes a difference. I learned that the hard way too.
LOL, but water’s not that bad, is it? Just gotta spice it up more! 😂
Wow! The mussels turned out amazing! I never knew such a simple recipe could taste so good. A definite 5 stars from me!
I tried this recipe too and it was so easy! My family loved it, thanks for sharing!
This recipe is amazing! My mussels turned out so delicious. I will definitely make it again!
Really? I found this recipe a bit tricky. My mussels didn’t open up properly. Any tips?
I’m so glad you loved it! Mussels are the best, right? Your tip on crusty bread is spot on! 🍞
This don’t sound right. Isn’t it just steamed mussels? My grandma always made it without all this fuss.
Not gonna lie, mine tasted a bit too salty even after careful seasoning. Also some mussels didn’t open, so I had to throw those out—bummer.
Ugh, that’s frustrating 😕 For the saltiness—mussels can be pretty salty already, so I usually go *light* on the salt and only pepper as needed. Also make sure the mussels are fully clean; any grit can mess with the flavor.
And yeah, not all mussels open. If they don’t open after the full cook time, tossing them is exactly right (better safe than sorry). Next time maybe try checking at 5 min and pulling them once most open so they don’t overcook.
This is the best moules marinières I’ve ever made! Thanks for sharing the recipe! 😊
Wow. Just wow. Perfect with that fresh bread on the side!!
Absolutely delicious! I never knew mussels could taste this good. This recipe is a keeper! 🍷
Best moules marinières I’ve made at home! The butter + shallot combo is perfection. Crusty bread absolutely required.
Just perfect! Pair it with crusty bread = a win! 🍞
Totally agree! Bread makes everything better. What type do you usually use?
I dunno, mussels kinda gross me out, those things are bottom feeders… 🍽️
Mmmm, gotta love the garlic and parsley combo. Made it for dinner, my family loved it! Will definitely make again.
My mom used to make this, but she never put white wine. Just water. Much better!
Water instead of wine? That’s interesting! I never thought of that. Maybe I’ll try it next time, but I love the flavor the wine adds!
I used frozen mussels because that’s what I had. They worked, but the broth didn’t feel as flavorful. Fresh is key, I guess.
I was skeptical about cooking mussels, but this recipe made it easy! Turned out better than I expected!
This is peak comfort food. Crusty bread + sauce = instant happiness. Family asked when I’m making it again.
Yes!! That crusty bread moment after spooning up the sauce is unreal. I make this anytime we need a cozy night in.
Love moules marinières but I’m curious—do you strain the mussel liquid at the end? Mine gets a bit sandy sometimes. Still tastes great though.
Not bad, but I think it needs something like black pepper + extra butter at the end. Sauce was a little plain.
Totally agree—black pepper at the end really wakes it up. I also drizzle in a little extra butter right before serving and it turns the sauce glossy, not plain.
Mussels are weird. I don’t get how people eat them. But my friend loved it.
Mussels are gross. Why would anyone eat these things? Don’t understand the hype.
My mussels didn’t open after cooking! What did I do wrong? This was frustrating.
Oh man, that must suck! But maybe they were already dead before you cooked them? Just a thought…
Did you make sure to clean them properly? Sometimes bad mussels don’t open. It’s important to check them before cooking!
Tried this with my partner and it was a disaster. The mussels were closed! What did I do wrong?
I don’t even like seafood much, but this recipe is pretty good. Might cook it again for my fam.
I don’t know, mussels sound kinda gross to me. I guess if you say it’s good, maybe I’ll give it a try? 🤔
I’m glad to hear you liked it! Mussels are super easy and delicious. Great choice for family dinners!
Came out good but had to cook them longer than 7 min. Some didn’t open, which was weird. 🤔
Wasn’t sure about the whole mussels thing, but these were surprisingly good. Simple instructions too!
