Matzo Ball Soup is a cherished dish in Jewish cuisine, offering a hearty and soothing bowl of flavors that warm both body and soul. Known for its fluffy matzo balls and savory chicken broth, this comforting soup is often served during Jewish holidays like Passover, but it’s perfect for any time you crave a cozy, satisfying meal.
The foundation of matzo ball soup is the matzo balls themselves, which are made from matzo meal, eggs, fat (usually chicken fat or oil), and seasonings. The matzo meal gives the balls a delicate, slightly firm texture that’s light yet substantial. The key to perfect matzo balls is ensuring they’re fluffy, so a little extra care when mixing the ingredients and allowing them to rest before cooking helps achieve the ideal texture.
The matzo balls are simmered in a rich, aromatic chicken broth, often made from scratch with chicken, vegetables, and herbs like thyme and parsley. The broth absorbs the flavors from the matzo balls, creating a savory, flavorful base that’s comforting in every spoonful. Whether you make your broth from scratch or use store-bought, it should be hearty and well-seasoned to balance the matzo balls’ mild flavor.
Matzo Ball Soup is incredibly versatile. You can add additional vegetables like carrots, celery, and onions to the broth for added texture and sweetness. Some recipes call for a touch of garlic or dill to enhance the soup’s flavor, making it fragrant and delicious. For those who like their soup with a bit more punch, a squeeze of fresh lemon juice or a sprinkle of black pepper can add brightness and a hint of spice.
This soup is the perfect comfort food, ideal for cold weather or any time you need a little extra warmth. Matzo Ball Soup is a nostalgic, satisfying dish that brings people together, whether shared with family on a holiday or enjoyed alone as a cozy meal at home. It’s a classic dish that never goes out of style.

Ingredients
- 1 cup matzo meal
- 4 eggs lightly beaten, large
- 4 tbsp chicken fat or oil melted
- 1/4 cup chicken broth or water
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 8 cups chicken broth for the soup
- 2 carrots sliced, medium
- 2 stalks celery sliced

Simple and delicious! Finally perfected my matzo balls! Yay!
Yay! But why do you put eggs in matzo balls? Isn’t that a bit much? I thought they were just matzo meal and water? 🤔
Congrats on perfecting your matzo balls! That’s no easy feat. They look so fluffy in your soup!
Love matzo ball soup but I think I prefer it from a can. It just feels easier. 😅
Canned is easier, but nothing beats homemade! Matzo balls from scratch are the best!
OMG this is the best matzo ball soup I’ve ever made! So comforting, I can’t believe how fluffy the balls turned out!
Honestly, I was skeptical about matzo ball soup but this recipe was easy to follow. It didn’t taste bad.

Isn’t matzo meal just a fancy word for bread crumbs, lol? This was easy tho.
I ain’t never tried matzo ball soup before but this was pretty good! I added some chicken for protein!

Simple ingredients but really hits the spot. A true classic. Gonna make it again for Passover!
I didn’t have chicken fat, so I used butter. Still turned out okay, I guess. But it’s not Kosher.
Matzo balls taste like bricks!! Can’t believe people actually like this soup. No thanks!
Mmmm, comfort food! I used turkey broth instead and it still turned out great!
I tried making this but the matzo balls were like rocks! What did I do wrong? Too much matzo meal maybe?
Eh, it was okay. The matzo balls didn’t rise much and were kinda dense. Might try adding more eggs next time.
Can someone tell me why my balls fell apart in the broth? I followed the recipe and everything. Sad day.
I had some issues with the matzo balls falling apart. Maybe it’s just me, but any tips?
Yum! My grandma used to make this every Pesach! Brings back memories. Thanks for sharing!
Too much chicken fat for my taste. Can’t believe people actually put that much in!
I tried this but my matzo balls came out too dense. Maybe I did something wrong? 🤔
Just made this for my family, they loved it! Perfect for cold winter nights. 10/10 would recommend.
Isn’t it just a bit bland? I feel like adding some garlic or onion would make it better. Just saying.

Delicious! I was surprised how much I liked it. Never had matzo balls before.
I dont get how people like matzo balls, they’re just doughy blobs. Soup is good tho.
Disappointed. The flavor was kinda bland. I added garlic and dill but still not great.
I’m really sorry you found it bland! It can depend on the broth you use. Maybe try homemade? It makes a huge difference!
Not what I expected. Seemed bland. Where is the flavor? Shouldn’t there be spices or something? I added hot sauce haha.
I think matzo ball soup is supposed to be comforting and simple. Adding spices might change it too much! But maybe sprinkle some dill next time? That could help!
Very delicious. My bubbe would be proud! I used regular chicken broth instead of making my own.
This recipe is a family tradition! My grandma used to make it every Friday night. So comforting!
That sounds so lovely! I love family recipes. It’s all about those comforting memories! I’ll definitely try this.
Just OK. The matzo balls didn’t hold together well. Next time I’ll try a different recipe.
I had the same issue! I wonder if letting them rest longer helps. Gonna try a new technique next time!
I forgot the eggs. Oops! Still tasted fine, I guess…
Doesn’t get better than this during Jewish holidays! Thanks for the clear instructions!

SO GOOD! Better than the ones from the deli. I could eat this every day!
Soo good! I added some spicy chicken and wow! Great recipe!
Not enough flavor for me, I added some garlic and herbs, helped a bit. Needs more seasoning!
