Greek Lemon Chicken Soup

September 23, 2024

Greek Lemon Chicken Soup, also known as Avgolemono, is a classic Mediterranean dish that combines the rich flavors of chicken, lemon, and rice in a light, flavorful broth. This comforting soup is both refreshing and nourishing, with the tangy lemon adding a vibrant touch to the creamy, savory base. Whether you’re seeking a soothing meal during cold weather or looking for a lighter dish with bold flavors, Greek Lemon Chicken Soup is a delicious option that will satisfy both your taste buds and your soul.

The soup starts with tender chicken, which is gently simmered in a flavorful broth made with onions, garlic, and herbs such as bay leaves and thyme. The chicken is then shredded and added back into the soup along with rice or orzo, which soaks up the delicious broth. What makes this soup unique is the addition of the avgolemono sauce, a silky mixture of eggs and lemon juice that is whisked into the soup at the end. The eggs create a creamy texture without the need for cream, while the lemon juice provides a refreshing tang that brightens the entire dish.

The balance of flavors in Greek Lemon Chicken Soup is what makes it so special. The savory broth pairs beautifully with the bright, zesty lemon, and the chicken adds a heartiness that makes the soup filling yet light. The egg-lemon mixture not only thickens the broth but also adds a smooth, velvety richness that takes the soup to another level of comfort.

This soup is incredibly versatile and can be customized to your liking. Some variations add vegetables like carrots or celery for extra color and texture, while others may include spinach for added greens. If you prefer a thicker soup, you can add more rice or orzo, or use a hand blender to blend part of the soup to create a creamier consistency. For a bit of extra flavor, garnish the soup with fresh parsley or dill.

Greek Lemon Chicken Soup is perfect as a light lunch, a cozy dinner, or even as a starter for a Mediterranean-inspired meal. It’s also a great option for meal prep, as it stores well in the fridge and can be easily reheated. Nourishing and comforting, this soup brings the bright, fresh flavors of Greece to your table with every spoonful.

Just made this and it didn’t turn out like the pic. Did I do something wrong? Orzo overcooked.

  6. 2 stars
Eh, not what I expected. The soup turned out kinda bland, maybe I shoulda added more spices.

I don’t see how lemon in soup could be that great. Sounds weird to me.

    2. 5 stars
Absolutely agree! The lemon really makes it pop! 🍋

  8. 2 stars
Uh, isn’t this just chicken soup? Why’s it gotta have a fancy name?

Just okay. Could use more veggies in my opinion.

The lemon is strong in a good way, but next time I’ll reduce it just a touch. Orzo absorbed a lot so it got thicker than I expected.

I struggled to find orzo in the store, ended up using rice. Turned out pretty good!

  17. 4 stars
The instructions were clear, and the soup tasted fresh. Only thing: my lemon juice was a bit too sour, so I’ll measure more carefully next time.

  18. User avatar judith.collins60 says:

I LOVE it! My grandma used to make something similar, this brought back memories.

  19. 3 stars
Followed the steps pretty closely, but my eggs scrambled a little. I think I didn’t temper slowly enough—next time I’ll whisk like my life depends on it.

    1. User avatar Mr. Prosser says:

I tried it but mine was more sour than lemony if that makes sense. I think I whisked the eggs too fast—any tips to keep it creamy and not curdly?

      5 stars
Love hearing that! The lemon-egg combo really does make it taste so “Greek” and cozy. 😄 Do you add extra lemon at the end or keep it to the recipe?

  24. 4 stars
Not gonna lie I was skeptical about tempering eggs in soup, but it worked. Texture was creamy without being heavy.

  31. 4 stars
I like it but my grandmother said ‘Soup shouldn’t have eggs!’ Not sure about that.

    1. 4 stars
Your grandmother might have a point, but I think eggs add a nice richness! Traditional or not, it’s delicious.

  32. User avatar liberal.hero says:

Pretty good, but I think I needed more salt. Also I added the spinach a bit too early—still fine though.

    1. User avatar ursula.schuppe87 says:

      4 stars
Glad it worked! I always end up doing “to taste” salt too—lemon can make it feel like it needs a little extra. What kind of chicken broth did you use (low-sodium or regular)?

    2. User avatar eula.mcclure27 says:

      4 stars
I did the spinach early once and it was kinda… mushy. Still tasty though. Next time I’ll wait till the very end like the steps say. Also I’m with you on the salt—mine was never right without more.

  33. 2 stars
Greek chicken soup? I never heard of that. Is it really Greek or what?

    1. User avatar ariel.smith says:

      2 stars
I dunno, sounds kinda weird to me. Chicken soup is chicken soup, right? I mean, Greek or not, its just soup.

    2. 5 stars
Greek chicken soup is actually a thing! It’s called Avgolemono, it’s a classic! You should try it, super tasty! 😋

  34. User avatar jordan.ankunding38 says:

I followed the recipe but it turned out too sour for my taste. Maybe less lemon next time?

    1. User avatar luther.oreilly51 says:

      4 stars
Yeah, I think less lemon would totally help! I used only 1.5 tablespoons and it turned out perfect. Give it a try!

  35. 3 stars
Too salty for my taste. I used low sodium broth but still too much. Maybe less salt next time?

  36. User avatar jarrod.welch7 says:

I tried making it, but I think I added too much lemon. Tasted kinda sour.

    1. User avatar terina.welch says:

      4 stars
Oof, that sounds frustrating—scrambling can happen if the broth gets too close to a simmering boil when you’re tempering. Next time, try turning the heat down more before step 6 and add the ladle slower. Glad the taste was still good though 😅

This soup is AMAZING! So tangy and comforting. Perfect for cold days!

  96. 3 stars
I followed the recipe but it turned out too sour for me. Too much lemon, maybe?

  97. 5 stars
This is the first time I’m making soup and it was so easy! Thanks for the recipe!

  98. 4 stars
I made it without the spinach and it was still great! A keeper for sure!

    1. 3 stars
No spinach? Idk how that would work. Isn’t that like missing the main flavor? But glad u liked it!

I’m glad it turned out great! Spinach is good but I can see how it would still be tasty without it. Thanks for sharing!

It turned out kinda bland for me. Maybe add more spices?

Quick and easy! Perfect for a sick day. will make again.

So glad you enjoyed it! It’s my go-to recipe when I’m not feeling well too. 🙂

Quick and easy! I used leftover rotisserie chicken and it worked fine!

But isn’t it kinda weird to put eggs in soup? Idk if I would like that. Sounds fancy but maybe too complicated.

That’s a great idea! I love using rotisserie chicken for quick meals. Never thought of adding lemon to soup, gonna try this! 😊

Pretty good, but mine thickened more than I expected and the orzo absorbed some broth fast. Next time I’ll maybe use a bit more chicken broth.

    1. 5 stars
Yeah, orzo can drink up broth fast 😅 I usually start with a little extra liquid or just keep some warmed broth on standby to loosen it up at the end.

  103. User avatar marcella.lehner says:

I think 1 cup orzo is too much? It got thick by the time we ate it. Still good, just more like pasta soup than broth.

  104. User avatar basementDweller says:

    3 stars
Not bad. I subbed the orzo for rice, but it still tasted fine. Next time, I think I’ll just do it with noodles instead. 😅

I love this soup too! So easy and delicious, especially on chilly nights. 😋

Not bad but could use more ingredients. Kinda plain in taste yo.

I actually think the simplicity is what makes it great! You can always add more herbs or spices if you want. I love how fresh it tastes!

    2. User avatar curt.emmerich88 says:

Plain? Nah. I mean, there’s chicken and lemon, it’s supposed to be light. But I guess if you like it loaded with stuff, maybe it’s not your thing.

  107. User avatar basementDweller says:

Yum! Family loved it. I added some extra garlic for flavor @.

Glad to hear your family loved it! Extra garlic sounds delicious! 😍

I don’t know about adding garlic to soup, seems odd. But if they liked it, then who am I to judge?

Could use clearer measurements for the chicken—recipe says shredded chicken but not how much. I guessed and it was okay.

I kinda like when recipes don’t give too much, but you’re right… I had to eyeball it too. Tho mine came out tasty anyway 😅

    2. User avatar august.cronin59 says:

Yeah I agree—“shredded chicken” is super vague. I used like 2 cups and it was fine, but next time I’ll measure it so it’s consistent.

  109. User avatar reuben.white50 says:

Not gonna lie, I think 10 minutes for orzo is too long. Mine got a little mushy. Flavor is still nice though, especially if you salt well.

I was skeptical about egg tempering in soup, but wow. Texture stayed silky and not scrambled. I used a little extra spinach and pepper—perfect.

Too much work for soup. Just keep it simple, please.

    1. User avatar sheron.sipes says:

I dunno, making soup can be easy! But honestly, if this recipe has too many steps, maybe there are simpler ones out there? Just dump stuff in a pot sometimes!

I actually think this soup sounds delicious! A little extra effort is worth it for a unique taste. But I get it, not everyone wants to spend a lot of time cooking.

Love this recipe! Quick and easy to make on a cold night. Just a heads up, make sure to whisk the eggs really well!

  113. 2 stars
The flavors were okay, but I expected more! Maybe add some garlic next time?

  114. 4 stars
Could use more chicken for my taste, but seasoning-wise it was solid. Orzo cooks fast so don’t walk away.

I don’t know, it was okay I guess, but my kids didn’t like it. Maybe too lemony for ’em? 🤔

    1. User avatar Spriggan Earth Mother says:

I totally get what you mean! My kids are super picky and wouldn’t touch it either. Maybe try less lemon next time? Just a thought! 🍋

    2. User avatar nicolette.hintz42 says:

Lemon? Isn’t that supposed to be good for taste? I dunno. The recipe seems fine to me, maybe it’s just the kids 😅.

Super easy weeknight meal. I used lemon juice from a bottle once and it still worked, but fresh lemon is WAY better. Five stars.

Who puts eggs in soup?? This is weird! I followed the recipe and ended up with a mess. Never doing this again.

  119. 5 stars
My family ate it in like 2 minutes. I added extra chicken too because we’re not light eaters lol. Great recipe.
