Miso soup is an incredibly popular dish in Japan, appreciated for its comforting and delicate flavors. It has also gained widespread recognition in many other parts of the world, where Japanese cuisine is highly regarded. The combination of umami-rich miso paste and savory dashi broth creates a harmonious and satisfying soup that is loved by many.
Health Benefits of Miso Soup
Miso soup is not only delicious but also highly nutritious. It contains a variety of beneficial ingredients that contribute to its overall healthfulness. Here are some reasons why miso soup is considered a healthy choice:
1. Probiotics
Miso paste is fermented, which means it contains probiotics – live bacteria that provide numerous benefits to our digestive system. These probiotics help promote a balanced gut microbiome, aiding in digestion and boosting our overall immunity.
2. Nutrient-Rich
With its combination of miso paste, dashi broth, and various other ingredients such as tofu, seaweed, and vegetables, this soup is packed with essential nutrients. It is a good source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that support our overall health and well-being.
3. Low in Calories
This is a low-calorie dish, making it suitable for those watching their calorie intake. The use of wholesome ingredients along with a light broth allows for a satisfying and flavor-filled meal without excessive calories.
4. Heart-Healthy Miso Soup
The fermentation process involved in making miso paste produces compounds known as isoflavones, which are believed to be beneficial in reducing the risk of heart disease. Miso is also naturally low in cholesterol and saturated fats, making it a heart-healthy option.
5. Digestive Aid
This soup can aid in digestion due to its rich content of enzymes that help break down food and improve nutrient absorption. Additionally, the warm nature can soothe the digestive system, making it a comforting choice for those experiencing digestive issues.
Overall, this umami soup not only satisfies your taste buds but also provides numerous health benefits, making it a popular and nutritious choice for a satisfying meal.

Where do you even find dashi broth? Is it magic or somethin?
Tasty, but I think 5 minutes simmer might overcook tofu if it’s softer tofu. Mine kind of broke apart. Maybe just warm it instead of simmering hard?
Yeah, I agree. If it’s silken/softer tofu, a full simmer can make it fall apart. I usually turn the heat to really low and just warm it 1–2 minutes (or add tofu off-heat, cover, and let it sit).
I thought miso was just for ramen. This is a game-changer! Miso soup makes everything better.
Pretty simple but I like it. The nori strips were a vibe. I’ll try adding mushrooms next time because miso + mushrooms always wins.
This is the best miso soup recipe! So quick and easy. My family loves it.
I totally agree! This recipe is a lifesaver on busy nights. Thanks for sharing!
Why boil anything with miso? I’ve heard you should not boil miso or it ruins it. So I’ll be more careful with step 1-2 next time.
Okay soup I guess. Didn’t really fill me up much. Maybe serve with rice?
I think it’s fine as is! Miso soup is light but perfect for a snack or starter. Rice might be too heavy!
Maybe you just need a bigger bowl! Miso soup is supposed to be light. lol
Honestly, I was a bit skeptical about using dashi broth. Isn’t it just fishy water? But I gave it a shot and it turned out good!
The instructions are short, which I like, but “bring dashi broth to a boil” then “add miso paste” is where people mess up. Miso shouldn’t be boiled hard—just saying.
Totally agree—miso is one of those things where boiling can mess up the flavor. I usually dissolve it off the heat first, then warm the soup gently.
Wait, I’ve been doing it exactly like that for years and it still tastes fine 😅 maybe it’s not that serious? But I get what you mean about not hard-boiling it.
Tofu is weird, but my wife loves it. She liked this soup a lot. 4/5
Tofu in soup is weird. I left it out and it was just as good! Less mushy, you know?
I actually don’t mind the tofu! It’s all about preference. But glad you liked it!
Mushiness? But tofu absorbs all the flavors! You missed out on some good texture. Just saying.
This soup is amazing! So comforting and easy to make. I added some extra seaweed for flavor 😋
Tried it but didn’t like the taste of miso. It was too salty for my liking.
Simple and cozy. The dashi + miso combo really does the heavy lifting—made it exactly as written and it tasted super comforting.
Simple and comforting. The miso dissolving tip is key—mine sometimes gets clumpy, but stirring steadily helped a lot.
Totally agree—once I started stirring steadily off-heat for a minute, it stopped clumping. This is such a comforting bowl.
I always thought miso just “melts” in. Mine still gets lumpy sometimes though, even with stirring… maybe my miso is old? Either way, looks great.
Yum! I added some mushrooms and it was fantastic! Highly recommend!
Mushrooms? That’s interesting! I’ve always thought of miso soup as just the basics. Maybe I should try it! 🍄
so good omg. my whole fam ate it even my picky cousin. would make again for sure
I only had kombu + water for “dashi,” not actual dashi broth, and it still turned out okay. Maybe not perfect, but still comforting.
I thought it was kinda bland… maybe needs more miso paste? Not bad overall.
This is basically perfect comfort food. I added extra green onions and it tasted restaurant-level. Also love how quick it is—10/10 for busy nights.
I don’t get the hype around this soup. It’s alright but not something I’d crave. Kinda bland, to be honest.
I totally disagree! Miso soup has this amazing umami flavor that just warms my soul. Maybe you didn’t use enough miso?
Yummy!
I don’t know about the dashi, but it was okay. Bit bland for my taste.
Nah, dashi is a key part of it! If you don’t like it, maybe miso soup just ain’t for you. Just saying.
I think if you add some soy sauce or a pinch of salt, it might improve the flavor! Miso soup can be really tasty with a bit of seasoning.
Miso soup? More like miss-a soup! Hated it but I’m not a soup person anyway.
Miso soup is always my go-to when I’m sick. Heats me up and feels good!
Tofu’s not even in the soup, duh! I didn’t see any in my bowl. What is this, sorcery???
I wasn’t expecting much, but this turned out pretty good. Still prefer ramen tho.
I’m glad you liked it! Miso soup has a unique flavor that can surprise you. Ramen is great too, but there’s just something cozy about miso. 😊
Simple and tasty! Loved how quick it was to make.
This recipe looks so easy! I’m definitely going to try it this weekend. Thanks for sharing!
Miso soup? Aren’t you supposed to cook the tofu longer? Idk, I’m not convinced it’s really that simple.
The recipe says dashi, but can you use chicken broth instead? I’m not sure.
This is my go-to quick soup now. 5 minutes simmer is the best part—fast but still feels homemade.
Delicious! Made it with some leftover veggies and it was bomb. This recipe is a keeper for real.
This is the best miso soup I’ve ever made! So easy and tasty! 5 stars!
I followed the recipe, but it turned out too salty. What did I do wrong?
Not my thing, I prefer my soup with noodles. Meh.
First time making miso soup and it turned out super yummy!! Will def make again.
That’s awesome! Miso soup is so comforting. How did you find the flavor?
I tried making it too, but it was kinda salty… did you add anything special?
Miso soup is just broth and seaweed, right? Doesn’t seem like a recipe to me, but okay.
Actually, there’s more to it than that! The dashi and miso give it a unique flavor. You should give it a try!
Made this tonight. Tastes legit—like actual Japanese home cooking. I used medium miso and it was nicely balanced.
Yummm!! I threw in some mushrooms too, and it was fantastic! Super easy dinner.
Not bad at all, but I added a splash of soy sauce because I like it saltier. Also, my nori softened a bit too much—next time I’ll add it closer to serving.
Love that idea! A splash of soy sauce would definitely boost the savory. Glad you’ll time the nori better next round too.
Soy sauce sounds like it might mess up the miso flavor tbh. And if your nori got soft, you could just put it in at the very end—like literally off the heat. Still looks good though.
This miso soup recipe is so easy! I love how quick it is to make. Will definitely be my go-to for a cozy night!
