Hot Honey Baked Beans

July 14, 2025

Hot honey baked beans are a fiery-sweet take on a timeless side dish, adding a bold kick to your next barbecue, picnic, or cozy dinner. This version keeps all the rich, smoky comfort of traditional baked beans but dials up the flavor with the sweet heat of hot honey. It’s the kind of dish that surprises you, in the best way, with every spoonful.

The base of hot honey-baked beans is familiar and hearty: tender beans slowly baked with onions, garlic, and spices. But where things get interesting is in the sauce. Instead of sticking strictly to brown sugar and molasses, this recipe brings in hot honey infused with chili or cayenne, for a sticky, spicy glaze that clings to each bean. The honey gives the dish a warm sweetness, while the heat cuts through the richness and adds depth.

This dish walks that perfect line between sweet and savory. A bit of tomato paste or ketchup gives the sauce body and tang. Smoked paprika or chipotle adds a hint of smokiness, and a splash of vinegar balances everything with brightness. If you want to lean into the savory side, you can toss in bits of bacon or smoked sausage. For a vegetarian version, the beans hold their own just fine without meat.

Hot honey baked beans are incredibly versatile. They make a great side dish for grilled meats, burgers, or fried chicken, but they’re also hearty enough to be a main course served over rice or alongside a slice of cornbread. You can prepare them in the oven for that traditional baked flavor or let them simmer on the stovetop if you’re short on time.

This spicy-sweet upgrade to a classic side dish is a crowd-pleaser that delivers unexpected flavor in a familiar form. Whether you’re feeding a crowd or just want something comforting with a kick, hot honey baked beans hit the mark.

Beans taste weird to me. I’ll stick to plain ol’ traditional baked beans. 👎

Hot honey? That sounds weird too! Just stick with what you like, I say. Not everything has to be fancy.

I think these beans sound great! The honey and spices might really take them to the next level. Give it a try before you knock it! 😊

Too much honey for my taste. I prefer classic sweet beans without all this spice. Not for me.

I dunno, the flavors didn’t blend well… too sweet for my taste. Maybe I did it wrong?

  21. 1 star
Baked beans are just beans, right? Why all these fancy ingredients? Keep it simple I say.

  22. User avatar ona.lueilwitz says:

Baked beans should just be plain, not all this fancy stuff. Get off my lawn with yer hot honey!

    1. User avatar modesta.flatley2019 says:

Beans are healthy, but this recipe just sounds wrong. Like honey and beans? Nah.

    1. User avatar anton.fisher36 says:

I’m skeptical about baked beans in an oven for 90 minutes… but wow, the caramelized top is real. Easy and tasty.

  26. User avatar Margot Fenring says:

    5 stars
Beans beans the magical fruit… as if the hot honey wasn’t magical enough! Legit, gonna make this for my BBQ! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  27. User avatar brian.dickinson says:

    2 stars
I dunno about adding honey to beans, seems weird. Didn’t taste right to me.

    1. 2 stars
Nah, honey and beans don’t mix. Sounds gross if you ask me! Beans should be savory not sweet!

    2. User avatar Isaiah Schowalter says:

      4 stars
I thought the honey added a nice sweetness! Maybe it just wasn’t your thing. Give it another try with less honey?

  28. User avatar joe_banana says:

    1 star
Why do people put honey in beans? Seems like a waste of good beans. No thanks!! ⭐

  29. User avatar manie.mayer79 says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about 90 minutes total baking for canned beans… but the caramelized top is real. That extra 30 minutes makes it.

    1. 2 stars
Hmm… I don’t know. Canned beans only need like 30-45 mins max in my experience. Did you rinse the beans first? Mine would’ve dried out if I went 90 minutes. Might try it but I’d start checking at 45.

    2. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

      5 stars
I was skeptical too, but once it hits that uncovered stage the top actually goes glossy and caramel-y. The Dijon + honey combo is doing work—made it last week and it disappeared fast.

  30. User avatar maryrose.tromp19 says:

    5 stars
I added some bacon bits on top before baking and it was to die for! Definitely a winner! 5 stars!

  31. User avatar jamika.gleichner1962 says:

    4 stars
Simple and delicious! I added some bacon bits on top before baking. So good!

    1. 2 stars
Not sure about the honey in beans…sounds kinda weird to me. But if you like it, then cool!

    2. User avatar alfredo.durgan74 says:

      5 stars
Bacon bits? That’s an awesome idea! I bet it adds great flavor. I need to try that next time!

  32. User avatar kenyatta.kirlin61 says:

    3 stars
I only had regular mustard (not Dijon) and it turned out okay. I think Dijon would be better though.

  33. User avatar Marian King says:

    5 stars
These beans are amazing! The hot honey really takes it over the top!

  34. User avatar kenny.kris2008 says:

    2 stars
idk… 350 for 1 1/2 hours seems like a lot. I tried it anyway and it was just okay. Would probably try adding bacon next time.

  35. User avatar Storm Atronach says:

    5 stars
Hot honey baked beans are the best idea ever. My family ate them straight outta the dish and asked for the recipe like, immediately.

  36. 4 stars
I’m not a fan of mustard in my beans though. Wish I could skip that ingredient. Still yummy overall. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

  37. User avatar agustina.considine13 says:

    5 stars
Yesss! I love beans and the sweet and spicy combo is fire! Also, this was super easy to make. Thank you! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  38. User avatar zackary.herzog says:

    2 stars
Wayyyy too sweet for my taste. Should have added less brown sugar. What a letdown.

  39. User avatar vito.kreiger51 says:

    3 stars
This was good but I definitely overcooked it because my oven runs hot. The beans got kinda thick and the edges tasted a little burnt. Still, the flavor was there!

  40. User avatar freddie.strosin says:

    4 stars
Didn’t think honey and beans would work together but I tried it and now I’m convinced! Yum!

  41. User avatar Mr. Prosser says:

    5 stars
Yum! The smoked paprika is da bomb! My friends are still talking about it.

  42. User avatar Ms. Ramiro Tillman says:

    2 stars
1 tbsp Dijon is too much IMO. My beans tasted mustardy and i had to add more beans. Might be great for people who like mustard.

    1. User avatar Pasta Fasta says:

      4 stars
Yeah, I get that. Dijon can really dominate—1 tbsp is definitely enough to make it taste “mustardy” if you’re not into that flavor. Glad you added more beans though; that’s an easy fix!

  43. User avatar Reg Nullify says:

    3 stars
I dunno about hot honey in beans. Seems weird? But I tried it and it was okay. Not my fave though. ⭐⭐⭐

  44. User avatar lela.tillman2023 says:

    2. User avatar verda.lemke says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! The hot honey really makes it pop. Glad you loved it!

  47. User avatar augustine.kassulke35 says:

    5 stars

  48. 3 stars
Hot honey is just extra sugar, right? Not really for me. 🤷‍♂️

  49. User avatar lillie.towne says:

    4 stars
Delicious! I used maple syrup instead of honey and it was still so good. Thank you for this!

  50. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

    5 stars
These were dangerously good. The hot honey + smoked paprika combo tastes like backyard barbecue in a dish. I added a little extra cayenne and it was perfect.

  51. User avatar waylon.morar51 says:

Baked beans? More like baked dulled beans! Where’s the flavor? 😒

  52. User avatar bennie.corwin says:

    3 stars
I’m not sure about the hot honey. Seems kinda weird for beans? But worth a try, I guess.

  53. 5 stars
Easy peasy! Even my kids loved them! 👍

  54. User avatar jay.braun64 says:

    4 stars
I’m not a Dijon person, so I used yellow mustard. Still tasty! Slightly different tang but it worked. 10/10 comfort food.

    1. 5 stars
I’m also not always a Dijon fan—yellow mustard sounds like it would still give you that tangy kick. Glad it turned out tasty! 😊

  55. User avatar courtney.casper8 says:

    4 stars
I didn’t let it cool enough and it was thick like lava—burned my tongue. Taste was amazing once I wasn’t rushing.

  56. User avatar Falmer Nightprowler says:

    2 stars
Way too sweet for my taste! I think the brown sugar was unnecessary. 2 stars.

  57. User avatar shila.schumm2018 says:

Baked beans? Really? Sounds weird but I’ll try it. How many servings does this make?

  58. User avatar brant.murphy2022 says:

These beans are delightful! The hot honey adds such a unique flavor. Will make again! 😋

  59. User avatar augusta.schaefer62 says:

Hot honey?! Sounds weird, but it actually worked out pretty good. Will make again!

    1. User avatar burton.west says:

      4 stars
I never woulda thought hot honey would go with beans, but I’m glad it worked for you! Gonna give it a try myself.

  60. 4 stars
I made this but used regular honey cuz I couldn’t find hot honey. Still tasted fine.

    1. User avatar Wellington Yueh says:

      3 stars
I dunno, honey’s honey, right? Hot honey probably adds more kick, though.

    2. User avatar luigi.klein1970 says:

      5 stars
Good to know it still worked with regular honey! Can’t wait to try it myself.

  61. User avatar nicky.waelchi says:

    4 stars
Idk maybe it’s just my oven, but 350°F took longer than the time in the recipe. Still ended up good—just plan ahead.

  62. User avatar celinda.smith10 says:

    5 stars
These came out sweet, smoky, and actually spicy in a good way. The second half of baking really caramelized the top—will make again for sure.

  63. User avatar ione.pacocha says:

    5 stars
Served this at a potluck, and everyone wanted the recipe! It was a total crowd-pleaser!

    1. 2 stars
Hot honey? Really? Sounds strange. I wouldn’t mix sweet with beans, what if it tastes bad?

    2. 5 stars
That sounds amazing! I need to try this recipe for my next gathering.

  64. User avatar fletcher.blanda2005 says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but it needs more salt in my opinion. Also smoked paprika can be overpowering if it’s strong.

  65. 1 star
Not impressed. Too sweet for my taste… What’s with all the sugar?

  66. User avatar christopher.cole1959 says:

    5 stars
These baked beans are amazing!!! The hot honey gives them just the right kick! Will definitely make again. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  67. 4 stars
Hot honey? Do you mean honey with chili? Sounds intresting!

  68. 5 stars
Followed the recipe exactly and they turned out thick and caramel-y. Would be amazing with cornbread or on a burger.

    1. 5 stars
That caramel-y thickness sounds perfect tbh. I always end up wanting baked beans to be spoon-thick like that. Cornbread pairing is spot on—did you add anything like bacon or onions?

  69. User avatar Super Saiyan 3 Goku says:

    4 stars
I’m not sure about using Dijon in beans, but it actually works. The flavor is balanced and not just sugary. Solid comfort food.

  70. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

    2 stars
Y’all, this was just too much work for beans! Can’t I just open a can? 🙄

  71. User avatar cordell.leuschke1964 says:

    2 stars
Hot honey? That’s a thing? I don’t know about this recipe, sounds too sweet for my liking.

  72. User avatar Corrupted Shade says:

    5 stars
This recipe is a game changer! The hot honey adds a delicious twist to the classic baked beans. Absolutely loved it!

  73. 4 stars
I forgot the mustard but they still turned out awesome! Looking forward to the next batch.

  74. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

    3 stars
Good flavor, but mine were a little too sweet even with less brown sugar. Next time I’ll cut the honey a touch and add more pepper or mustard.

  75. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

    5 stars
Stirring everything in a bowl is genius. No mess, and the flavor got deeper after baking.

  76. User avatar katrina.walsh49 says:

    5 stars
Yum! Just like my grandma used to make but with a twist. Best BBQ side dish!

  77. User avatar courtney.willms47 says:

    5 stars
Made this for game night and it disappeared fast. The hot honey + smoked paprika combo is 🔥. I used a little extra cayenne and it was perfect.

  78. User avatar millard.roberts2010 says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have hot honey, so I just used regular honey and added more cayenne. It was still good, but a bit too spicy for my kids.

  79. 3 stars
Hmm, did I miss something? Why not just stick to original baked beans? This seems weird.

  80. 3 stars
Mine got kind of runny even after the extra 30 minutes. Maybe my beans were juicier? Tasted great though, just not as thick.

  81. 4 stars
The sauce tastes sweet, smoky, and just enough spicy. Next time I’ll add a little garlic too, but overall great.

  82. User avatar vikki.hane43 says:

    3 stars
I got confused with cayenne and paprika. I just put more paprika. Oops!

    1. User avatar jefferson.daugherty31 says:

      5 stars
Don’t worry! Paprika’s great too. It’ll just be a bit milder. Enjoy your beans!

    2. User avatar eldora.beer says:

      3 stars
More paprika? Lol, did you just ignore the spice? That’s gonna be a different dish for sure.

  83. User avatar carrol.pacocha80 says:

    4 stars
Followed it pretty much exactly, and it turned out sweet-spicy with a nice thick sauce. Next time I might add a splash of Worcestershire for more depth.

    1. User avatar humberto.kuhlman46 says:

      3 stars
I dunno about adding Worcestershire, that seems like it might make it too tangy? But if it already had that nice thick sauce, maybe a tiny splash would be good. Did you add it during mixing or after baking?

    2. User avatar Eccentrica Gallumbits says:

      5 stars
That sounds perfect—sweet, spicy, and thick is exactly what I want out of baked beans. Worcestershire definitely adds that savory depth, so I’m stealing that idea for next time.

  84. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

    4 stars
Savory and sweet combo is the best! I’d definitely make this again for my BBQ party. Everyone enjoyed it! 4 stars.

    1. 5 stars
I totally agree! The mix of sweet and savory is soooo good! What did you serve it with?

    2. User avatar elizbeth.moen29 says:

      3 stars
Sounds nice but I’m not sure about the hot honey. Ain’t that too sweet? I might skip it next time.

  85. User avatar miquel.rippin says:

    4 stars
I followed the steps exactly and the sauce thickened nicely after uncovering. However, 1 hour felt short for my oven—had to bake longer to get that deeper caramel color.

  86. 2 stars
Beans good. Sweet yes. But I just like plain ol’ beans better.

  87. User avatar Slaughterfish says:

    4 stars
Really good, but I think I’d skip the mustard next time. It was too strong.

  88. User avatar waldo.fisher7 says:

    5 stars
Baked beans = childhood nostalgia! These were a hit at my BBQ.

  89. User avatar nona.kulas8 says:

    5 stars
These beans were a hit at our BBQ! The honey gave them such a unique flavor. Definitely making again!

    1. User avatar Lester Gaylord says:

      2 stars
I don’t know about honey in beans. Sounds weird to me. Beans are supposed to be savory, not sweet. 🤷‍♂️

    2. User avatar quinn.kihn1982 says:

      5 stars
I’m glad you enjoyed them! The honey really does add a special twist, doesn’t it? I can’t wait to try it out at my next gathering.

  90. User avatar bridgette.treutel44 says:

    5 stars
Can I just say… the smell while baking was unreal. My whole kitchen smelled like a barbecue joint. Will make again.

  91. User avatar bernard.prosacco24 says:

    5 stars
Omg!!! Yummy!!! My family devoured this. 10/10.

  92. 4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about the hot honey + beans thing, but it works. The smokiness from paprika is the hidden MVP.

    1. User avatar deon.thompson says:

      5 stars
Okay wow—I’m with you. I was skeptical too, but hot honey really makes the beans taste “baked” not just canned. The smoked paprika being the MVP is spot on.

  93. User avatar Dwarven Shpere says:

    2 stars
This was not what I expected… the cayenne was way too spicy for my kids!

    1. User avatar Pizpot Gargravarr says:

      4 stars
I get that! Cayenne can be a lot for kids. Maybe try using less or substitute with paprika next time?

  94. User avatar erwin.erdman says:

    1 star
Beans are beans. Addin’ honey don’t make it magic. Just my opinion.

  95. 4 stars
Tastes great! But what is smoked paprika? I just used regular. Still turned out good tho.

  96. User avatar celeste.walter1982 says:

    4 stars
Hot honey?? Who thought of this? Genius! My family loved it!

  97. User avatar kenton.little says:

I didn’t have hot honey, so I used regular honey and added some chili flakes. It was ok, but I think I need the hot honey for real!

I don’t think regular honey works as well, you should really get the hot kind!

I totally get it! Hot honey really takes it to the next level. Maybe try it next time!

I followed it and it turned out bland. Might be the brand of beans? Also, I think 1 tbsp Dijon is too much—overpowered the honey for me.

Wow, went too heavy on the cayenne! 😅 A bit hot for my taste, but the sweetness balances it out. Be careful! ⭐⭐⭐

I dunno about the hot honey thing. Seems weird for beans. I just used regular honey and they turned out okay. 3 stars.

Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about Dijon in baked beans, but it works. My family thought it was “restaurant-style.” Will repeat.

Yum! Perfect for my BBQ last week. Everyone couldn’t get enough! Thumbs up!

350°F seems a little low? I baked it exactly as written and it was good, but I wanted more of a crust. Maybe my oven runs cool.

    1. User avatar halflife4 says:

Yeah 350°F can feel low, but since it’s covered for an hour, it kind of steams the beans first. I’ve found you get more “crust” if you leave it uncovered a bit longer (like 40–45 min) or even broil for 1–3 min at the end—keep an eye on it so it doesn’t burn. Also if your oven runs cool, adding 10–25°F could help.

My friend suggested I try this recipe. I tried it and it was ehh… pretty simple.

Ehh? That’s a bit harsh, I actually loved it! Maybe it was just not your taste. 🤷‍♂️

I totally get you! Sometimes simple recipes just don’t hit the spot. Did you try adding more spices? Maybe a little garlic could help!

Pretty solid. I like that it’s simple—just dump, mix, bake. Mine took closer to 1 hr 40 min for the top to really caramelize though.

Made these for my backyard cookout and they were a hit. The hot honey + smoked paprika combo is dangerously good. I used a little extra cayenne and it still tasted balanced.

Hot honey baked beans feels fancy for something that uses canned beans. Honestly, I love that.

Looks good, but do we really need that much honey? Seems like it might be too sweet.

I tried this recipe and it was a hit at the BBQ! Everyone wanted to know my secret. Thanks for sharing!

These beans are dangerously good. The hot honey + smoked paprika combo is the sweet spot. I did 1/4 tsp cayenne and it was still plenty spicy for me.

Made these for a cookout and they disappeared fast. The hot honey + paprika combo is *chef’s kiss*.

Omg yes—hot honey + smoked paprika is such a good combo. I made these last week and they vanished at my BBQ too 😅

Sounds tasty, but I’m not sure about the 1/2 tsp cayenne—seems like a lot for my liking. Maybe I’d cut it in half and add more if needed.

I overdid the cayenne 😅. Still edible, but next time I’m starting with like 1/4 tsp. Otherwise the sauce got nice and thick.

Honestly sounds kinda fancy for canned beans. Like… it’s beans with sugar and pepper. But I guess if it tastes good, whatever.

I think 1 tsp salt might be too much depending on the beans. I’m using low-sodium and mine came out kinda salty. Otherwise good flavors.

  116. User avatar rina.cummings says:

Way too spicy for my family. I only used 1/4 tsp cayenne and it still kicked. Also, 2 cans is maybe not enough for a big crowd.

Why do they call it hot honey? Honey ain’t hot! This is just beans with some sugar.

    1. User avatar Hunter Weimann says:

I dunno, I tried these once and it tasted like sugar and beans. Just beans with sugar is better!

Honey can be hot! It’s the cayenne that gives it that kick. You gotta try it before judging! 😋

Way too much cayenne for my taste—burned a little (but also kinda addictive). I’d start with 1/8 tsp next time.

  119. User avatar oliver.dare75 says:

Mine came out a bit too sweet even with the 1/4 cup honey. Could be my honey brand. Still tasty, just reduce brown sugar/honey next time.

    1. User avatar tai.beier76 says:

      3 stars
Hmm I dont think its the recipe tho 😅. Maybe you accidentally used more honey? Like was it 1/4 cup exactly? Mine tastes good but I like sweet. Next time try less honey or add a little extra mustard/paprika to balance.

    2. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

That’s super plausible—some honey brands are way sweeter/thicker than others. I usually cut the honey by 1–2 tbsp and add it at the end if needed. Also, if your brown sugar is packed, it’ll push it over the edge.

Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about Dijon in baked beans. But it actually adds a nice tang. Still, I’d reduce the honey next time—too sweet for me.
