Apple-Sausage Hash

January 3, 2025

Apple-sausage hash is a comforting, flavorful dish that combines the savory goodness of sausage with the natural sweetness of apples, creating a perfect balance of flavors. Whether enjoyed for breakfast, brunch, or even dinner, this hash is a satisfying meal that’s easy to make and full of delicious textures. The caramelized apples bring a slight sweetness, while the sausage adds richness and depth, making each bite a delightful combination of savory, sweet, and slightly smoky.

To make apple-sausage hash, you begin by browning your choice of sausage, whether it’s mild or spicy, in a large skillet. The sausage is broken into crumbles as it cooks, releasing its savory flavor into the pan. Once the sausage is cooked through, it’s removed from the pan, and diced onions and garlic are sautéed in the leftover sausage fat, building a savory base for the hash.

Next, cubed potatoes — usually Yukon Gold or russet potatoes — are added to the skillet. These potatoes are pan-fried until golden and crispy on the outside, while remaining tender on the inside. The key to achieving the perfect crispy potato is letting them cook without stirring too much, allowing each piece to get a nice golden crust.

The star ingredient, apples, are sliced and added to the skillet towards the end of cooking. The apples caramelize slightly in the heat, enhancing their sweetness and providing a pleasant contrast to the savory flavors of the sausage and potatoes. A dash of cinnamon or a sprinkle of fresh thyme or rosemary can be added to give the dish a warm, aromatic note.

Once everything is combined and heated through, the apple-sausage hash is ready to serve. It’s delicious on its own but can also be topped with a fried egg for extra richness. You can also serve it with a side of toast or a fresh green salad for a complete meal.

Apple-sausage hash is a versatile dish that can be made in advance and reheated, making it perfect for meal prep or busy mornings. The combination of savory sausage, crispy potatoes, and sweet apples makes it an irresistible, hearty dish that’s sure to become a breakfast favorite.

Wasn’t a fan, the apples got too mushy for my taste. I think I prefer my sausage with just potatoes.

I tried this but I think cooking the apples too long just makes them mushy. Maybe just add them last?

It’s alright I guess. Not my kind of dish but whatever. I made it anyway.
