Halloumi with Honey and Thyme

August 1, 2025

Halloumi with honey and thyme is one of those deceptively simple dishes that delivers big on flavor with minimal effort. With just a few ingredients, it turns into a beautifully balanced plate that’s salty, sweet, savory, and aromatic all at once. It’s ideal as a starter, small plate, or even part of a mezze spread for sharing.

Halloumi is a firm, brined cheese originally from Cyprus, known for its high melting point. That unique quality means it can be grilled or pan-fried until golden and crisp on the outside while remaining tender and chewy inside. When cooked right, it develops a gorgeous crust that’s irresistible.

To prepare this dish, thick slices of halloumi are seared in a hot pan until they take on a deep golden color. As they sizzle, the cheese softens slightly but holds its shape perfectly. Once cooked, it’s time for the finishing touches, a generous drizzle of warm honey and a sprinkle of fresh thyme leaves.

The honey adds sweetness that complements the salty richness of the cheese, while thyme brings an earthy, herbal depth. The combination feels luxurious and indulgent, yet it’s surprisingly light and fresh on the palate.

For an extra pop, you can finish the dish with a squeeze of lemon juice or a pinch of chili flakes if you like a little heat. Serve the halloumi immediately, while it’s still hot and crisp, ideally with crusty bread or warm pita on the side to soak up the flavorful juices.

This dish shines as an appetizer at dinner parties or as part of a casual grazing board. It’s visually impressive with minimal work, which makes it a favorite for both hosts and guests. And best of all, it’s ready in under 15 minutes.

Whether you’re a long-time fan of halloumi or trying it for the first time, this honey and thyme version is a delicious way to enjoy the cheese in its finest form – warm, golden, and dripping with flavor.

Not sure about that combo… honey on cheese? Sounds odd. I prefer my halloumi savory, not sweet.

It sounds weird, but trust me, it’s amazing! The sweetness of the honey really complements the saltiness of the halloumi. 😍

Can you substitute the honey for sugar? I ain’t got any honey and I’m hungry!

I don’t really think this works. Halloumi is too chewy with honey. I prefer it grilled without all that sweetness.

I see your point! Halloumi can be a bit much with honey. Grilled without the sweetness is also a classic way to enjoy it. 🍽️

I followed it pretty much exactly, but my pan got way hotter than medium and the outside browned faster than the inside warmed through. Still tasty though—next time I’ll lower the heat.

Really? Halloumi with honey? That seems strange. Tried it and I was shocked, it’s actually good!

Just made this, and it was okay. The thyme was a bit strong, I think.

OMG, it’s delish! The sweetness of honey really complements the salty halloumi. You won’t regret it!

Quick and simple! My family loved it. I added some chili flakes for a kick.

    1. 3 stars
Chili flakes? I thought honey was supposed to be sweet, not spicy. 🤔 But whatever works for you.

Simple and delicious. I did burnt it a little but still good. Next time, less time on the fry. lol

    1. User avatar Paula Nancy Millstone Jennings says:

      4 stars
Glad you liked it! Halloumi is tricky, and it can burn fast. Next time, maybe try a lower heat?

    2. 2 stars
This sounds good, but honestly, honey on cheese? Not sure about that. I’d rather just eat the halloumi plain.

  27. User avatar seth.lowe1955 says:

    3 stars
2-3 minutes each side feels a little short for my stove. Mine stuck a bit even though it was non-stick. Maybe I should use less honey so it doesn’t get sticky?

    1. 4 stars
Yeah 2–3 min/side is kind of fast depending on your heat. I usually go till it’s deep golden and a bit crisp—if it’s sticking at all, the pan temp might be too high or the halloumi surface might be a little wet.

    2. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

      5 stars
Less honey definitely helps with the “sticky” part. I drizzle lightly, not a full coat, and I do it right after frying so it doesn’t sit and caramelize too much.

  28. User avatar Chi Shenlong says:

    2 stars
Meh. Honey makes it too sweet for my taste, and I didn’t get much thyme flavor.

    1. User avatar loren.padberg70 says:

      4 stars
I feel you—honey can totally overpower it. If you want more thyme, use a bit more thyme (or make sure it’s fresh/finely chopped) and maybe warm the honey slightly so it spreads thinner. Also try less honey drizzle next time.

  29. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    4 stars
Tried this for dinner and it disappeared fast. Next time I might add a little chili flakes because I like my sweet-savory more punchy.

  30. 4 stars
What a unique way to use halloumi! I added some nutmeg and it made it even better! I’m a chef now, haha!

  31. User avatar refugio.mayer53 says:

    3 stars
Does anyone know if I can use this with a different cheese? My kiddies don’t like halloumi, but I want to try this!

  32. User avatar naida.rutherford85 says:

    3 stars
I tried this and it kinda burned on one side before the other browned. Maybe my pan was too hot. The taste was good though.

    1. 4 stars
Yeah, that sounds like the pan was running a bit hot or the halloumi was frying too long. I usually go more like medium-low and flip once it releases easily. Glad the taste still came through though!

  33. 3 stars
Mine stuck a bit even though I used a non-stick pan. I think my oil wasn’t hot enough, because it took longer than 2-3 minutes per side.

  34. User avatar Leto Atreides says:

    3 stars
Not sure about the ‘thyme leaves only’ thing—couldn’t find fresh, so I used a pinch of Italian seasoning. Still tasted okay, but not the same vibe.

    1. User avatar cory.moore2001 says:

      4 stars
Totally get it—fresh thyme is great, but Italian seasoning shouldn’t ruin it. I’ve done something similar and it still comes out nice and sweet-salty.

  35. 5 stars
So good! The halloumi gets that perfect crispy edge and the honey + thyme combo is super addictive. I used dried thyme and it still tasted great.

    1. User avatar magan.olson38 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! Exactly this. The crispy edges with the honey is addicting 😄 I also use dried thyme when I’m out of fresh and it still works.

  36. User avatar herschel.legros says:

    2 stars
I don’t get why everyone loves halloumi! It’s just squeaky cheese. Tried this recipe, and it was okay, not gonna lie.

  37. User avatar Emely Brown says:

    4 stars
Love the flavors, but honey drips everywhere when you drizzle it. Next time I’ll warm the honey a little or spoon it more slowly.

    1. User avatar armando.kuphal97 says:

      5 stars
Yeah, that honey can be a mess 😅 Warming it slightly (like 10-15 seconds) really helps it drizzle without making a puddle.

  38. 2 stars
Honestly I don’t get the hype—honey on cheese feels weird to me, but I’ll admit it smells amazing while cooking. Flavor was okay though.

  39. 5 stars
yum! i made it for my friends and they gobbled it up. halloumi forever! 😊

    1. 5 stars
So glad your friends loved it! Halloumi is the best! 💖

  40. User avatar CTRLplusW says:

    5 stars
This combo is dangerously good—crispy edges, salty halloumi, then that sweet honey hit. I used dried thyme since I was out of fresh, still tasted great.

    1. User avatar erasmo.abernathy2009 says:

      5 stars
Dangerously good is right 😄 The honey + thyme combo makes the halloumi taste fancy. I did the same with dried thyme and it still worked—maybe just a pinch extra.

    2. User avatar kirk.mclaughlin42 says:

      2 stars
I’m not convinced about the honey part. Halloumi is salty enough—sweetness feels kinda weird to me. But okay, crispy edges are hard to argue with.

  41. 5 stars
This is such a quick upgrade to halloumi. Golden edges + honey is dangerously good. I used dried thyme once and it still worked.

  42. User avatar Humma Kavula says:

    4 stars
Pretty solid. I think 2-3 minutes per side might be a bit long for my pan (it browned too fast), but once I adjusted the heat it worked well.

  43. User avatar kerri.nitzsche says:

    5 stars
This recipe is incredible! The combination of honey and halloumi is out of this world. Thank you!

  44. User avatar Cedric Murray says:

    5 stars
I made this for dinner and everyone went quiet while eating. That never happens. Thyme makes it smell fancy too. 10/10 would do again.

  45. User avatar Ranee Lueilwitz says:

    3 stars
I think the honey is too sweet, I don’t know. Maybe I’m not a fan of sweet and savory?

  46. User avatar buddy.leuschke78 says:

    3 stars
Pretty basic tbh. Could use garlic or chili. Still not bad though.

  47. User avatar Oda Kohler says:

    2 stars
1cm thick is key, I think. Mine were thinner and they went rubbery-ish. Still edible, but the crispness wasn’t there.

  48. User avatar Skip Dover says:

    4 stars
Honey over fried cheese sounds weird to me, not gonna lie. But I tried it and… yeah, it’s actually nice. Sweet-salty combo is real.

  49. User avatar mathWizard says:

    5 stars
Halloumi is always a win in my book. Thyme with honey feels fancy for basically no effort. Would definitely serve this to guests.

    1. User avatar morgan.nicolas20 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—halloumi gets so crisp and the honey thyme combo sounds fancy without being hard. Definitely a guest-pleaser.

    2. User avatar carlyn.waters says:

      4 stars
I tried something like this once, but my honey burned a lil when I drizzled too early 😅 Maybe I’ll drizzle after frying like your steps say. Also is 1 cm halloumi pieces for real? I usually cut way thinner.
