Greek tzatziki is one of the most beloved Mediterranean condiments, known for its refreshing taste and creamy texture. This simple yet vibrant dip is made from yogurt, cucumber, garlic, and herbs, creating a cool and tangy complement to grilled meats, roasted vegetables, or warm pita bread. Whether you’re enjoying it as part of a mezze platter or using it as a sandwich spread, tzatziki brings a light, fresh flavor that instantly elevates any dish.
What makes tzatziki stand out is its perfect balance of ingredients. The base is thick, strained yogurt – traditionally Greek – which provides a rich and creamy texture while still feeling light. Into the yogurt goes grated or finely chopped cucumber, which adds crunch and a hydrating freshness. Garlic adds a punch of flavor, while lemon juice and olive oil bring brightness and depth. Fresh dill is the classic herb of choice, though mint is sometimes used for a slightly different twist.
Tzatziki is more than just a sauce – it’s a versatile staple in Greek cuisine. It’s commonly served with grilled meats like souvlaki or gyros, where its coolness cuts through the richness of the meat. It also works beautifully as a dip for fresh vegetables, pita chips, or even French fries. Some use it as a healthier alternative to mayonnaise or creamy dressings, spreading it on wraps and sandwiches or spooning it over salads.
It’s also a dish that encourages freshness. The yogurt should be full-fat for the best texture, the cucumber crisp, and the herbs freshly chopped. Because the flavors meld as it sits, tzatziki often tastes even better after chilling for a few hours in the fridge, making it a great make-ahead option for entertaining.
Greek tzatziki is proof that a few simple ingredients can come together to create something truly special. It’s fresh, flavorful, and endlessly useful – the kind of condiment you’ll want to keep on hand all summer long.

Easy peasy! My kids loved helping with grating the cucumber. Will make it again!
I mixed up olive oil & vinegar, oops! Still tasted good but not the best. Might need to redo it!
This recipe is amazing! Tzatziki turned out perfect, just like I had it in Greece! So refreshing.
I totally agree! Tzatziki is the bomb! I love making it for summer BBQs!
I don’t know about the dill, it overpower the garlic a bit. Maybe cut it down a notch next time.
I actually love the dill! It adds a nice freshness. But I get what you mean, maybe just use a bit less next time. Everyone has different tastes!
Very good, but its just yogurt sauce, wow guys calm down. 1 hour in fridge is too long.
1 hour is a bit much, but I guess it gives time for flavors to come together or whatever. Still good anyway!
I disagree! The chill time is what makes it taste so good. It’s not just yogurt, it’s Tzatziki!
I used dried dill because I was out of fresh and it tasted… fine? Not as aromatic. Still gonna make again when I can get fresh dill.
So easy to make! I love how the yogurt and cucumber blend together. My family loved it!
I don’t know, sounds too easy. Can it really be that good? What if I mess it up?
I tried this too! It was super yummy, but my kids liked it better without the garlic. Just a personal thing, I guess!
Nice recipe! I added extra garlic because I love it. Definitely making this again!
Extra garlic sounds awesome! I love a good strong flavor. Can’t wait to try it your way!
Perfect chill dip for chips! Who needs pita? 😋
Easy to follow instructions! But lost 1 star due to too much garlic for my liking. Next time, less garlic!
Who even eats cucumber?? Gross. Not for me.
I followed the recipe but it turned out too watery. What did I do wrong?
Tzatziki is basically just soured cream with cucumber, right? My grandma did it different.
yummm!
Not bad, but the garlic was a little intense for me. Maybe I should’ve minced smaller or used less. Next time I’ll start with 1 clove.
Idk, I always use more garlic and it tastes more “authentic” 😅 But if your garlic is intense, try grating it super fine or even letting the minced garlic sit in the olive oil for a minute. Might help.
Totally agree—2 cloves can be punchy, especially if they’re minced pretty chunky. Starting with 1 clove is such a good call. Also letting it sit in the fridge really mellows it out!
This is exactly the kind of tzatziki I look for—cool, garlicky, and not watery. The salting step really helps. I used dried dill once and it was still good, but fresh is better.
This tzatziki is amazing! So fresh and creamy. Will definitely make again!
Honestly not a fan. The dill was too strong for my taste and I felt like it needed more garlic. Maybe I did something wrong?
I think the dill can be strong, but it’s a key ingredient in Tzatziki! Maybe try measuring it out next time?
So good!!! I served it with grilled chicken and everyone loved it!
So fresh and tangy! The draining step makes a big difference—my tzatziki usually turns watery, but this stayed nice and thick.
I don’t get why people use olive oil—mine looked kinda oily and separated a bit. Maybe I used too much? Still tasted fine though.
Greek yoogurt is too thick, I used regular yogurt, still good tho.
Regular yogurt works just fine! Glad it still turned out good. 😄
Can I use sour cream instead of yogurt? Not sure if it’ll taste the same, but I don’t like yogurt.
Yeah, you can use sour cream! It’ll give a different flavor but still creamy. 👍
Good, but I think it could use more garlic. Do people not love garlic? Very strange.
Came out really good! I was worried the garlic would be too strong, but after chilling it mellowed nicely. Great with pita and gyros.
So glad it worked out! Chilling really does mellow the garlic—love that you tried it with gyros and pita. 😄
Mine tasted “garlicky” at first too but I think I needed more dill/ lemon to balance. Also I forgot to squeeze the cucumber enough the first time… still good though!
This tzatziki recipe is awesome! It was so refreshing and perfect with gyros. Definitely making it again!
I tried making this but it was too watery. Maybe I didn’t squeeze enough out of the cucumber?
I’ve made tzatziki before and the ratio of cucumber to yogurt seems a bit off—like it’s more garlic-forward. Still edible though, just not my favorite version.
This tastes super fresh. The lemon + dill combo is doing the heavy lifting. Will make again.
Tried this, but my cucumber got too mushy, clearly did something wrong…
