Buckeye Fudge

July 22, 2024

Buckeye Fudge is a dessert that beautifully balances the rich, creamy texture of peanut butter with the smooth, indulgent flavor of chocolate. Inspired by the famous Buckeye candy, this treat brings together the best of both worlds in a way that feels both comforting and decadent. It’s the kind of dessert that makes people pause and savor each bite, enjoying the combination of sweet and salty in a single, melt-in-your-mouth experience.

What makes Buckeye Fudge so special is its simplicity and versatility. The creamy peanut butter base is the heart of the treat, offering that familiar, nutty goodness that pairs perfectly with the chocolate topping. The fudge’s beauty lies in its layers, with each bite providing the perfect balance of rich chocolate and the satisfying depth of peanut butter, without either flavor overpowering the other.

While the classic version is always a crowd-pleaser, one of the joys of Buckeye Fudge is how easy it is to customize. Whether you prefer a darker chocolate layer or a hint of salt for an added twist, there’s plenty of room to experiment and make it your own. It’s the perfect treat for any occasion, whether you’re looking for a quick sweet snack or a dessert to share at a gathering.

This fudge is also a great option for gift-giving. It looks beautiful when cut into neat squares and wrapped in cellophane or packaged in a decorative box, making it a thoughtful, homemade gift for holidays, birthdays, or any celebration.

For those who love the combination of peanut butter and chocolate, Buckeye Fudge is an indulgent, easy-to-make treat that hits all the right notes. Its rich, velvety layers and irresistible flavor make it a must-try for anyone with a sweet tooth.

It’s okay, but I thought it would be more chocolatey. Maybe try adding more chips?

  2. User avatar Geralyn Altenwerth DVM says:

    4 stars
Okay but why does it make 48? My mini tins only fit like half that. I ended up with fewer pieces and more filling—still delicious.

  3. User avatar dann.prohaska says:

    5 stars
Made these for a potluck and they disappeared fast. Super creamy and the chocolate set perfectly in about an hour in my fridge. Will absolutely make again!

  4. User avatar britt.hodkiewicz says:

So easy to make! Seemed like a lot of ingredients, but really simple.

    1. User avatar xavier.bauch14 says:

      5 stars
I tried this and it was super simple! My kids loved it!

  5. User avatar zachary.moore47 says:

    3 stars
Mine was a little too thick when I poured it into the liners, like fudge that set too fast. Not sure if I cooked it too long or my peanut butter was thicker.

  6. 1 star
Why do they call it fudge when it’s just melted chocolate? 🤔

    1. User avatar Dan Streetmentioner says:

      5 stars
Fudge is more than just melted chocolate! It’s the texture and creaminess that makes it fudge! 🍫

    2. User avatar laverne.langworth51 says:

      3 stars
But isn’t fudge just a fancy term for melted chocolate and sugar? 🤷‍♂️

  7. 2 stars
Not really a fan of peanut butter in desserts, so I didn’t enjoy it much. Might just be me!

  8. 5 stars
5 stars! I just took them out of the fridge and they are perfect. Yummy!

  9. User avatar wiley.pollich85 says:

    2 stars
It’s decent… but honestly, just buy a chocolate bar. It saves time. 😅

  10. 2 stars
I kinda messed it up, didn’t melt the chocolate enough. Is it supposed to be runny?

    1. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

      2 stars
I don’t understand the fuss with melting chocolate, my mom just uses the microwave!

    2. User avatar Fiddlesticks says:

      4 stars
Yeah, it should be kinda runny when you melt it! Just put it back on the heat for a bit. You’ll get it right next time!

  11. User avatar boyce.lehner47 says:

    5 stars
Absolutely delicious! A hit at the party!

  12. User avatar rich.landlord says:

    1 star
Didn’t turn out at all. The chocolate didn’t melt properly for me.

    1. User avatar elmo.robel says:

      3 stars
I had the same problem once, but it was because I didn’t use enough heat. Just don’t rush it!

    2. User avatar Jewell Carroll PhD says:

      4 stars
Sorry to hear that! Did you use a double boiler or just a pot? That could make a difference.

  13. User avatar marva.goyette30 says:

    4 stars
Easy recipe, but my chocolate burned a lil bit. Next time I’ll be more careful.

  14. 2 stars
Broke my spoon trying to mix it, lol. Not the best recipe for a smooth finish.

  15. 5 stars
Soo good! I added some crushed peanuts on top for crunch. Will def make again!

  16. User avatar Eustolia Goldner II says:

    5 stars
5 stars all day! Who knew peanut butter and chocolate could be this good together?

  17. User avatar tonia.mccullough says:

    3 stars
It was ok, but I thought it would taste more like fudge. Got a bit confused with the instructions.

    1. User avatar Charles Darwin says:

      4 stars
I totally get what you mean! I thought it would be more fudgey too! Maybe try adding more peanut butter next time? That could enhance the flavor a bit.

    2. User avatar erin.legros2018 says:

      3 stars
Confused? The steps are simple, just follow them! I think it came out pretty tasty, honestly. Maybe you just don’t like the flavor? 🤷‍♂️

  18. 3 stars
Too sweet for me. I had to add extra salt to balance it out. Might try with less chocolate next time.

    1. User avatar liberal.hero says:

      4 stars
I find it perfect as is! Maybe try a different brand of chocolate? Some are sweeter than others.

    2. User avatar zina.schaefer says:

      2 stars
Nah, more chocolate is always better. Salt seems weird to me! Just embrace the sweet!

  19. User avatar fawn.klocko1971 says:

1 cup peanut butter + condensed milk is basically a dessert cheat code. I skipped measuring and it still worked (kinda).

    1. User avatar jenifer.johnson says:

      5 stars
Totally—condensed milk does most of the heavy lifting. Mine never fully “works (kinda)” though… I always end up needing more stirring time so the peanut butter blends smooth 😄

  20. User avatar Paula Nancy Millstone Jennings says:

    3 stars
I tried it exactly as written and it was waaaay too sweet. Also, 1 hour wasn’t enough in my fridge—had to chill like 2 hours before they’d hold shape.

    1. User avatar mickey.bednar64 says:

      5 stars
Hmm that sounds frustrating 😕 Buckeye fudge is usually pretty sweet from the condensed milk—next time maybe use unsweetened cocoa or add a pinch of salt to cut it. And yeah, chilling longer can be key for the shape!

    2. User avatar donette.wisozk1969 says:

      4 stars
I think your fridge might be colder? I always do 2 hours minimum. Also mine was sweet too, so I swap in a little less condensed milk (like 3/4 can) and it helps. 1 hour is not enough for me either.

  21. 1 star
Dislike! Chocolate and peanut butter do not mix well! Never again.

  22. User avatar klara.pouros21 says:

    2 stars
I tried this but it didn’t set for some reason… Is there something I did wrong?

  23. User avatar Josette Powlowski DDS says:

    5 stars
This turned out dangerously good—rich, smooth, and the peanut butter flavor is spot on. I made them for a party and they vanished fast. 10/10 would snack again.

  24. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    3 stars
I love peanut butter, but the ratio felt off to me. Next time I’ll reduce the condensed milk just a touch so it’s less creamy.

    1. User avatar Nadene Carroll says:

      3 stars
Wait, you mean less condensed milk makes it *less* creamy? I always thought it needed the full can to set right… but maybe my peanut butter was different. Also I used regular peanut butter chips like the recipe says—idk if that matters.

    2. 5 stars
Totally get what you mean—condensed milk can make it feel almost too smooth. Reducing it a bit sounds like a great tweak. I might try 1/2 to 1 tbsp less next time.

  25. 5 stars
This recipe is out of this world! I’ve made it three times already!

  26. User avatar Ricardo Monahan says:

    5 stars
This is dangerously easy. Double boiler + stir + chill… done. I added a pinch of salt and it made the peanut flavor pop.

    1. 5 stars
Right?? I made this and was like… is that it? 😅 The texture was spot on though—double boiler makes it so smooth. Salt pinch sounds legit.

    2. User avatar basementDweller says:

      3 stars
Dangerously easy indeed. I tried “double boiler” but my pot was basically just simmering the whole time and it got kinda grainy… still ate it 😬 Next time I’ll be more careful. Salt might help, so I’ll try that!

  27. User avatar courtney.powlowski43 says:

    5 stars
This is a decadent treat! My kids love it!

  28. User avatar Pasta Fasta says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have peanut butter chips, used walnuts instead. Still worked great!

  29. User avatar lucien.ward61 says:

    2 stars
I tried it but i think my chocolate chips never really melted all the way. Ended up grainy, kinda gross to be honest. Maybe my double boiler was too hot?

    1. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

      4 stars
Ugh, grainy fudge is the worst. Your instinct might be right—if the double boiler runs too hot, the chocolate can seize instead of melting smoothly. I’d try keeping the water barely simmering (not steaming hard) and stir more gently/consistently until it’s glossy before pulling it off heat.

  30. User avatar willy.casper4 says:

    5 stars
These are dangerously good. Like… one turns into five. I used mini muffin liners and they popped out clean.

    1. User avatar myrl.gottlieb2021 says:

      5 stars
Yessss—dangerously good is exactly right 😅 I love that they come out clean with mini liners. I’ve made buckeye fudge before but it always stuck a bit unless I used extra-cold chilling time. How long did yours chill?

    2. User avatar olen.zulauf1956 says:

      3 stars
Hmm I’m not sure I trust the “turns into five” thing lol. But I guess if the liners pop clean, that means the texture is right. I used creamy PB and only did like 30 mins in the fridge once… was still pretty soft. Might try your liner trick though.

  31. User avatar clyde.botsford38 says:

    5 stars
So easy it felt like cheating. I used regular peanut butter chips and it still worked perfectly. Next time I’ll try a pinch of salt just to make it pop.

  32. User avatar nikki.leuschke says:

    5 stars
Gonna try this with almond butter. Hope it’s as good as it sounds! Fingers crossed.

  33. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    2 stars
I think using the peanut butter chips is overkill. Why not just stick to regular peanut butter?

  34. 5 stars
Wow, just wow. Can’t believe how easy it was to make. Definitely a keeper!

    1. User avatar nereida.langosh1975 says:

      2 stars
Easy? Really? I tried making it and it turned out a gooey mess. What did I do wrong?

    2. User avatar lee.mayer42 says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! I never thought it could be that simple. It’s so yummy too!

  35. User avatar terry.welch says:

    5 stars
This recipe is sooo good! Made it for a family gathering and everyone loved it! Easy peasy.

  36. User avatar quinton.schiller says:

    4 stars
Not bad at all! The texture is smooth and creamy. I chilled mine a bit longer than an hour and they were perfect to bite.

  37. User avatar garth.gutmann24 says:

    3 stars
You say condensed milk but I used evaporated milk instead, it still turned out okay I think.

  38. 4 stars
Can I use milk chocolate instead? I’m not a fan of dark chocolate.

    1. 5 stars
Yeah, you can totally use milk chocolate! It’ll make it sweeter but still delicious.

    2. 3 stars
I think it might not taste the same. Dark chocolate has this rich flavor that milk just can’t match. But who knows, give it a shot, I guess.

  39. 4 stars
Can you use milk chocolate instead of dark? Asking for my kid.

    1. User avatar dante.beahan28 says:

      5 stars
Sure, you can use milk chocolate! It’ll be sweeter but still really good for kids.

    2. User avatar arlen.greenholt1951 says:

      3 stars
Milk chocolate? I dunno… won’t it taste too sweet? Dark chocolate gives a nice balance. But if it’s for a kid, maybe worth a try.

  40. User avatar Wolf Link says:

    3 stars
I tried this but my fudge didn’t set right. What did I do wrong?

    1. User avatar Dr. Homer Schaefer says:

      4 stars
Maybe you didn’t refrigerate it long enough? Mine set pretty good after an hour. Just give it some time!

  41. 5 stars
Okay but this is dangerously good. I made them for coworkers and they disappeared fast. The texture is super fudgy once they chill.

    1. User avatar Dr. Oswaldo Auer says:

      5 stars
Yes!! That fudgy texture after chilling is the best part 😄 I’ve done the same—bring them to work and they’re basically gone before lunch.

  42. User avatar sergio.sauer91 says:

    3 stars
Not convinced about the ratios. Mine was more like thick chocolate spread than fudge—still tasty, just not the consistency I expected. Maybe my peanut butter was too runny.

    1. User avatar wilbert.mosciski1986 says:

      5 stars
Totally get what you mean—this one can turn out more like a spread if the mix doesn’t get thick enough before you portion it. I’ve noticed runnier peanut butter (and sometimes slightly warm ingredients) definitely loosens it up. Next time, try chilling the mixture 5–10 minutes after you stir it in, or use a creamier/less runny peanut butter. Also, mini tins help set faster but the fridge time matters too.

  43. User avatar jackqueline.rice2009 says:

    4 stars
I’m skeptical of condensed milk in fudge… but I tried it and honestly, it’s legit. Smooth and rich.

  44. User avatar King of Red Lions says:

    5 stars
Yum! Made it for the kids’ school bake sale and it was a hit! They ate it all up.

  45. User avatar duncan.lockman63 says:

    5 stars
Pretty easy and tastes like buckeyes without all the fuss. I used regular peanut butter chips and it still worked great.

  46. User avatar blythe.cronin13 says:

    5 stars
This is the best fudge recipe! So easy and delicious! My family loves it.

  47. User avatar jack.corkery1954 says:

    2 stars
Meh. The flavor was okay but not really “buckeye” vibes for me. I think I needed more peanut butter flavor or a pinch of salt, because it tasted flat.

  48. User avatar kraig.schowalter82 says:

    5 stars
Wow—this tastes like real buckeye fudge without all the fuss. Dark chocolate is a win. Five stars from me.

  49. 5 stars
Yum!! Who needs a reason to make fudge? So good.

    1. 5 stars
Exactly! Fudge is always a good idea. Can’t wait to try this version!

  50. User avatar Gema Wehner says:

    5 stars
Yum yum! I could eat the whole batch myself! Excellente recipe!

    1. 5 stars
I love it too! It’s so easy to make and so delicious! 😍

  51. 5 stars
My kids loved making these! Super easy recipe.

  52. User avatar ALTplusF4 says:

    4 stars
I don’t usually trust recipes that don’t mention temperature or exact mixing times. That said, the “3/4 melted” guidance actually helped. Texture was nice after cooling.

  53. User avatar Lumberjack says:

    3 stars
Simple recipe but seems a little too sweet for me.

  54. User avatar geoWizard says:

    5 stars
Lookin good! Gonna try this for a bake sale! #fudgelove

    1. User avatar carlie.bashirian90 says:

      2 stars
Looks good. But isn’t fudge just too sweet? What if people don’t like it?

    2. User avatar lorie.beier1955 says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome! Hope they turn out great for your bake sale! Fudge is always a hit! 🍫

  55. 4 stars
Quick and simple. Just how I like it! Amazing fudge.

  56. User avatar esta.rowe71 says:

    3 stars
I tried substituting crunchy peanut butter and it was… fine. Not the same vibe as creamy, but it still worked. Could be a personal preference thing.

  57. User avatar Papahl and family says:

    5 stars
OMG these were sooo good! My kids loved them too! Thanks for sharing!

  58. User avatar brock.reynolds59 says:

Can you make this with milk chocolate? Asking for a friend.

    1. User avatar herman.turner2000 says:

      5 stars
Yes, you can definitely use milk chocolate instead of dark! It might be a bit sweeter, but still delicious!

    2. 3 stars
I dunno… milk chocolate is good but won’t it make it too sweet? Dark’s got that nice balance though.

  59. 3 stars
It was okay, but too sweet for my taste. Maybe less condensed milk next time?

  60. User avatar Draugr Thrall says:

    4 stars
I followed the steps pretty much exactly, but mine turned out a little too soft. Maybe my condensed milk was different or I didn’t wait long enough to refrigerate. Still tasted great though.

    1. 4 stars
Totally makes sense—if it’s soft, it’s usually not chilling long enough or the condensed milk brand runs a bit looser. I’d try refrigerating closer to 2 hours next time (or even a bit in the freezer) and make sure your peanut butter is creamy, not the drippy kind.

  61. User avatar Samwise Gamgee says:

    2 stars
48 pieces seems like a lot—my scoop must’ve been bigger. Also the instructions say 1 tbsp peanut butter chips but the ingredients list 2 tbsp… I double-checked but still confused. Taste was okay though.

  62. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    5 stars
This is dangerously good. I followed it exactly and the 48 mini portions were perfect for sharing—everyone asked for the recipe.

  63. 1 star
I messed up the whole thing. I thought double boiler was for pasta haha.

  64. 4 stars
“Double boiler over medium heat” sounds vague. I think everyone’s stove is different. Still, the result was sweet and buttery—could be fudge, could be candy. Either way, my kids liked it.

    1. User avatar ed.walter says:

      3 stars
Wait… I don’t have a double boiler. Can I just microwave it? Or is it gonna turn into greasy peanut butter mush? Also “sweet and buttery” sounds like you barely cooked it—fudge should be thicker. Still, my grandkids would probably eat anything chocolate.

    2. User avatar nancy.vonrueden19 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—“medium heat” doesn’t mean the same thing on every stove. I simmered it a bit higher the first time and nearly seized it. But once I watched it and pulled it at the 3/4 melt stage, it turned out sweet and super creamy. Glad your kids loved it!

  65. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

    4 stars
I was skeptical about condensed milk + peanut butter together, but it came out smooth and rich. Next time I’ll add a tiny pinch of salt to make the chocolate pop.

  66. User avatar Restless Draugr says:

    5 stars
This came out super rich and chocolatey. I used regular peanut butter instead of peanut butter chips and it still set nicely. 48 pieces was legit and they disappeared fast.

    1. User avatar chris.metz89 says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome—48 really does sound spot on if you used a 1″ scoop. Love that it set nicely even with regular peanut butter instead of chips; I’ll try that next time!

  67. User avatar joane.bailey says:

    4 stars
I added a pinch of salt and it really leveled up the flavor. Without salt it felt kinda sweet for me.

    1. User avatar Draugr Wight says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—salt really pulls the flavor together in fudge. I’ve had that exact “kinda sweet” problem without it too. Glad your pinch fixed it!

  68. User avatar romelia.brekke says:

    2 stars
Uh, isn’t fudge supposed to be cooked? This doesn’t seem like real fudge.

  69. User avatar andre.vandervort says:

    2 stars
I followed steps exactly and it still didn’t set right after an hour in the fridge. I had to leave them longer. Might be my condensed milk brand, but yeah, be patient.

    1. User avatar ned.damore9 says:

      5 stars
Ugh, that’s frustrating—good call leaving them longer. Condensed milk brands *do* seem to behave differently (some are thicker/saucier), and double-boiler heat can also swing the final texture. Next time I’d try simmering/stirring until it’s fully smooth and a bit glossy before adding the peanut butter, then refrigerate closer to 2 hours (or until firm when you gently press a corner).

  70. 4 stars
Pretty good, but mine got a little thick before the chips fully melted. Next time I’ll lower the heat sooner—double boiler is important.

    1. 5 stars
Good catch! Mine thickened once too—dropping the heat earlier and keeping it more of a gentle double-boiler melt definitely helps. 👍
