Ditalini Pasta

December 5, 2025

There is something incredibly comforting about a bowl of ditalini pasta coated in a rich tomato sauce. This simple, rustic dish carries the charm of classic Italian home cooking, where humble ingredients come together to create something warm and deeply satisfying. Whether served as a quick weeknight dinner or as a cozy lunch on a cold afternoon, ditalini with tomato sauce delivers flavor, familiarity, and ease in every bite.

The base of this dish is a silky tomato sauce made with ripe tomatoes, garlic, olive oil, and a touch of onion for sweetness. As the sauce simmers, it thickens into a glossy, fragrant blend that clings beautifully to the small, tube-shaped ditalini. Their shape is ideal for holding sauce in every nook, creating a perfect balance of pasta and tomato in each spoonful. A sprinkle of basil adds freshness, while a generous handful of parmesan brings the salty, nutty finish we all crave.

What makes this dish special is how adaptable it can be. If you like a richer flavor, you can add a splash of red wine while the sauce reduces. For a bit of heat, crushed red pepper flakes work wonders. Some cooks like to fold in vegetables such as spinach or zucchini for extra texture and nutrition, while others keep it classic and let the tomato shine. No matter the variation, ditalini pasta remains the ideal companion, soft yet sturdy, perfectly shaped for saucy comfort cooking.

This dish also works beautifully as a make ahead option. The sauce can be prepared in advance and stored in the fridge for a few days or frozen for future meals. When you are ready to eat, simply cook the ditalini, warm the sauce, and toss together with a little pasta water to bring everything together. Finish with parmesan and a drizzle of olive oil and you have a delightful meal that tastes like it came straight from an Italian kitchen.

Pair this pasta with a fresh arugula green salad, crusty bread, or a light glass of red wine for a complete and satisfying plate. It is proof that simple dishes can feel like pure comfort when prepared with care and good ingredients.

I don’t get why people rave about this. It’s just pasta and sauce. Tastes fine but nothing special.

This was super easy to make! The kids loved it. Will definitely make it again!

LOL my pasta turned mushy. Guess I can’t cook. I messed up the time. But the sauce was decent!

Not bad, but I’m skeptical about using just “tomato sauce” without anything else (like onion). It needed a bit more depth for my taste.

    1. User avatar joaquin.monahan2018 says:

      4 stars
Yeah I get you—“tomato sauce” can taste kinda flat. I like to sauté a small onion with the garlic first (or add a pinch of sugar) for more depth.

    2. 3 stars
I dont think u need onion. The garlic + oregano + basil is already plenty flavor for me. If it tastes off, just simmer longer or add more salt/pepper. Works every time 😅

Pretty good weeknight meal. I added a pinch of chili flakes and it kicked it up a notch. Would make again!

  8. 5 stars
Simple, comforting, and my whole kitchen smelled amazing with the garlic. I used homemade tomato sauce and it came out great.

  9. User avatar helaine.leuschke1988 says:

Easy weeknight meal. I used store-bought tomato sauce and still tasted great after simmering the full 10 minutes. Would make again.

  10. User avatar morton.trantow says:

Not bad, but I think it needs more flavor. I added some red pepper flakes and it helped, but still just okay.

  11. 5 stars
This is basic but in a good way. Like, the kind of recipe you can use when you don’t wanna cook for 2 hours. Family liked it.

  12. 4 stars
The recipe says 200 ml tomato sauce—mine was kinda thick, so I added a splash of water to loosen it. Otherwise the pasta wouldn’t coat well.

  13. User avatar rich.rosenbaum2025 says:

    3 stars
I followed it pretty much exactly, but my sauce came out a little watery. I think my tomato sauce was runny—will reduce it next time. Otherwise, tasty!

    1. User avatar jude.kozey1969 says:

      3 stars
Watery sauce happens to me too 😅 I swear my garlic burned once and then I added extra water?? not proud lol. Maybe try cooking it till it clings to the spoon—also did you drain the pasta well?

    2. User avatar loyd.dooley says:

      5 stars
Thanks for sharing! Yeah, I’ve noticed if the tomato sauce is runnier, it never fully thickens in just 10 minutes. Next time I’ll simmer longer or reduce it before adding the pasta.

  14. User avatar jerry.schamberger2 says:

    2 stars
It’s pasta and sauce, how can you mess that up? I thought it was bland. 🤷‍♂️

    1. User avatar darren.okeefe21 says:

      4 stars
I think you might’ve skipped the seasoning! A bit more salt and herbs can totally change the flavor. 🤔

  15. User avatar connie.bergstrom2005 says:

Tried this tonight—super comforting. The garlic-oil step really makes the sauce taste “real.” I added a pinch of chili flakes too and it was perfect.

  16. User avatar Miss Nelly Douglas says:

    Yum!

  17. 5 stars
Simple and comforting. The oregano/basil combo with the garlic makes it taste way more “made from scratch” than it is.

  18. User avatar Mrs. Rico Hettinger says:

I followed it exactly but my sauce got too thick. Not sure if I should simmer longer or add a splash of water next time.

  19. User avatar Orange Dartwing says:

    3 stars
Mine turned out a bit too acidic, maybe I didn’t simmer long enough? Still good, but next time I’ll add a tiny pinch of sugar or more olive oil.

  20. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

Ugh, I burned the garlic! But I still enjoyed the pasta, lol. I’ll try again!

  21. 5 stars
This tasted like my nonna’s pasta when she made it “quick.” Garlic sauté step is key. Great recipe!

Why add oregano? Taste weird with the tomato. I wouldn’t recommend.

My garlic burned for like 20 seconds because I wasn’t watching closely—so I had to restart the garlic. But once it was fragrant, everything worked.

  25. User avatar vince.stark1955 says:

Yum! Perfect weeknight dinner. I used fresh tomatoes instead of canned and it was great!

  26. User avatar Cammar Pilru says:

    4 stars
Mine was a bit bland until I salted more at the end. Next time I’ll use more pepper and maybe a tiny splash of pasta water to help the sauce cling.

    1. User avatar steve_maga says:

      5 stars
That makes sense—tomato sauces can definitely need a little extra seasoning at the end. I’ve also found a tiny splash of pasta water helps a lot with clinging and makes it feel less “watery.” Your plan for more pepper next time sounds spot on!

  27. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

Tomato sauce?? I used orange sauce instead (ketchup) it was kinda good but also weird. LOL!

  28. User avatar rupert.herman says:

    4 stars
5 stars but my parmesan burned a little on top (skill issue lol). Still delicious.

  29. User avatar mohammed.morar says:

I’m skeptical about canned tomato sauce + dried herbs only. It came out okay, but it needed more seasoning than the recipe suggests.

  30. User avatar branden.mitchell says:

Garlic for only a minute felt risky—I usually burn it—but luckily it worked. The whole thing is simple and doesn’t need fancy ingredients.

    1. 5 stars
Exactly—garlic can go from perfect to burnt super fast. I do the same and watch it like a hawk. Glad it worked out!

  31. User avatar classie.hamill says:

  32. User avatar halflife4 says:

Honestly, it was kinda bland. I added more spices but still felt missing something..

  33. User avatar yoko.mills99 says:

Super simple and comforting. The oregano + basil combo really makes the tomato sauce taste more “from scratch.” I added a pinch of chili flakes and it was perfect.

  34. User avatar lucien.marvin14 says:

Honestly? Kinda boring. Tomato sauce + pasta is fine, but I expected more flavor from the seasoning amounts.

  35. 2 stars
I don’t like pasta, but my husband enjoyed it. So 2 stars for him.

  36. User avatar brandee.schamberger1967 says:

Nice weeknight meal, but 10 minutes simmer felt short to me. I simmered closer to 20 and the flavors blended more.

  37. User avatar dallas.crona says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I thought it would be bland with just tomato sauce and dried herbs. Turns out black pepper makes a difference. Still, I might add onion next time.

  38. 3 stars
The garlic sauté step—mine burned for half a second because I was talking. Still edible though. If you’re distracted, keep an eye on it.

This is fine, but it’s missing something. Maybe a splash of wine or a pinch of sugar to balance the tomatoes? Right now it’s a bit sharp for me.
