Creamy Orzo Pasta

September 16, 2025

Creamy orzo pasta is the kind of dish that proves comfort food doesn’t need to be complicated. Small, rice-shaped pasta is transformed into a rich and velvety creation that feels indulgent yet remains light enough to enjoy any time of the year. With its smooth texture and ability to absorb flavors beautifully, orzo is the perfect base for building a creamy, flavorful dish that can stand alone or accompany a variety of mains.

What sets creamy orzo apart is its versatility. Cooked in a flavorful broth or with a splash of white wine, the pasta develops depth before being enriched with cream, cheese, or even a plant-based alternative. The result is a silky, luscious consistency reminiscent of risotto but achieved with far less effort. Parmesan, mascarpone, or cream cheese often lend richness, while a finishing touch of herbs like parsley, basil, or thyme brightens the dish and adds a layer of freshness.

The texture is key to its appeal. Orzo has just the right bite, soft yet slightly firm, so when enveloped in a creamy sauce, each spoonful feels smooth and satisfying without being heavy. Vegetables such as spinach, peas, mushrooms, or sun-dried tomatoes can be folded in for extra flavor and color, while proteins like grilled chicken, shrimp, or salmon make it a complete and hearty meal.

Creamy orzo is also a dish that adapts beautifully to the season. In the cooler months, it can be made rich and cozy with earthy mushrooms and a generous helping of cheese. In warmer weather, a lighter version with lemon zest, fresh herbs, and green vegetables keeps it refreshing while still indulgent. Its adaptability makes it a reliable favorite, whether you’re serving a family dinner, entertaining guests, or simply looking for a quick yet elegant weeknight option.

Ultimately, creamy orzo pasta is about balance. It combines the comfort of a creamy dish with the elegance of delicate pasta, offering endless opportunities for customization. Each bite delivers warmth, richness, and a touch of sophistication, making it a dish that feels both familiar and special one you’ll find yourself turning to again and again.

Really quick recipe, but I didn’t have lemon zest so I skipped it. 🤷‍♀️

Too creamy for my taste, I like my pasta a bit lighter. 😕

I get that! It can be quite rich. Maybe try less cream next time? 😊

I think it’s perfect! Creaminess makes it delicious. You’re just used to lighter things! 😂

Orzo? Is that a type of rice? I’m confused lol.

    1. User avatar bettyann.kozey70 says:

      4 stars
Yeah, I thought it was rice too at first. But I think it’s more like tiny macaronis or something. Anyway, looks yummy!

    2. User avatar wava.klocko2021 says:

      5 stars
Orzo is actually a type of pasta, not rice! It’s shaped like rice but is made from wheat. That’s a common mix-up! 😄

Chicken in pasta? Seems weird. I don’t think that would taste good.

    2. 5 stars
Sounds delicious! Chicken is a great addition. I’ll definitely try that next time!

  9. User avatar mertie.doyle says:

SO easy to make! I’ll be making this again for sure.

  10. User avatar stefania.emmerich47 says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but I was expecting it to taste more “buttery” and less like a light pasta soup. Maybe I didn’t toast the orzo long enough. Will try again.

  11. User avatar marisol.weissnat1983 says:

    5 stars
This recipe is amazing! So creamy and delicious! My family loved it!

  12. 3 stars
I tried this and it was too rich for my taste. Maybe less cream next time?

  13. User avatar edwardo.oconner1962 says:

    4 stars
The flavor is solid. I’m giving it a 4 because the steps were clear, and it came together fast even on a weeknight.

    1. User avatar genevie.lang says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—this came together way faster than I expected on a weeknight. My orzo stayed creamy and the lemon zest really brightened everything. Clear steps = 10/10 from me.

    2. User avatar joe_banana says:

      4 stars
I tried it and the flavor was good, but I think 10-12 minutes didn’t get my orzo fully tender. Also I might’ve used “2 cups broth” a little too generously, so it took longer to thicken. Still, it’s a solid base—would make again and just simmer a bit more.

  14. User avatar tyler.doyle says:

    4 stars
I’m not a pasta person but this was easy. Also the parsley garnish is a nice touch—makes it look fancy.

  15. User avatar Piter De Vries says:

    5 stars
This is one of those recipes that looks fancy but is actually easy. The lemon zest is subtle but makes a difference. Family asked for seconds.

    1. 5 stars
Yesss! I love when something tastes restaurant-y but doesn’t take forever. The lemon zest tip is so true—my dish tasted brighter the second I added it. Making this again for sure.

    2. User avatar keitha.moore16 says:

      3 stars
I tried it and it was decent, but I think I messed up the broth part? Mine got kind of thick way too fast, like I needed more liquid. Also, 1 tsp lemon zest felt like a lot—maybe I’ll use less next time. Still, pretty tasty with the parm.

  16. User avatar retha.oreilly90 says:

    5 stars
    Easy. Tasty. Repeatable.

  17. 5 stars
So creamy and comforting—toast step for the orzo really makes a difference. I added a tiny extra lemon zest and it brightened everything.

    1. User avatar Gurney Halleck says:

      3 stars
I tried it but I don’t think I toasted long enough—mine came out a bit bland even with extra lemon zest. Still pretty creamy though. Maybe I’ll use more Parmesan next time.

    2. User avatar Majin Buu says:

      5 stars
Yes!! That toasting step is everything—mine usually turns out super glossy and comforting after it. The lemon zest sounds like the perfect little brightness.

  18. 4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about toasting the orzo first, but the flavor is actually deeper. Easy directions too.

  19. User avatar chu.predovic1972 says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about simmering the orzo in broth only 10-12 minutes. But it worked. Delicious and easy.

  20. User avatar lynne.dooley says:

    5 stars
Creamy goodness! I’m not a cook but I made it easy peasy!

    1. User avatar suzann.runolfsson28 says:

      5 stars
Wow, that sounds delicious! I’ve always been intimidated by recipes, but this seems simple enough. Can’t wait to try it!

    2. User avatar carmelia.abernathy says:

      2 stars
Creamy? I don’t know about that… Isn’t orzo just pasta? How can it be creamy without like, cheese or something? 🤔

  21. User avatar garry.sawayn37 says:

    5 stars
So cozy and creamy! The lemon zest really brightened it up and the orzo tasted perfectly tender. I used freshly grated Parmesan and it made a difference.

    1. User avatar tona.ortiz says:

      5 stars
Yes! Fresh Parm is a game changer—totally makes it taste more rich and less “powdery.” I also love the lemon zest with the cream; it keeps it from getting too heavy. 🍋

  22. User avatar claudio.greenfelder1978 says:

    4 stars
This is good, but I think I needed a splash more broth—mine got a bit thick before the orzo was fully tender. Still delicious though.

    1. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

      3 stars
Mines also got thick. I guess I over-toasted the orzo? I added broth again but idk, it was kinda pasty. Could be the orzo brand or my pan was too hot. Still tasted good tho.

    2. User avatar nicky.denesik73 says:

      5 stars
That makes sense—once orzo drinks up liquid it can go thick fast. Next time I’d add a couple extra splashes of broth (like 2–4 tbsp at a time) while it simmers, until it’s tender and saucy.

  23. User avatar lynell.stracke says:

    5 stars
Simple ingredients, but it tastes like it took effort. I added some black pepper and it really popped. My only complaint: I ate it too fast.

  24. User avatar krystle.nikolaus81 says:

    3 stars
Idk… it tastes a bit bland to me. I added extra salt and pepper and it improved a lot, so maybe I under-seasoned.

  25. User avatar Miss Britt Witting says:

    2 stars
My garlic burned a little—oops. I fixed it by starting over with garlic sooner off the flame. Flavor was worth it once I got it right.

  26. 4 stars
I’m skeptical about the lemon zest in a creamy chicken-broth situation… but wow, it works. It cuts the richness. I used dried parsley because I’m lazy and it was still fine.

    1. User avatar candie.yundt says:

      5 stars
I was also side-eyeing the lemon zest, but you’re right—it brightens it up so it doesn’t feel heavy. Glad it worked for you even with dried parsley.

  27. User avatar lovetta.hahn27 says:

    5 stars
Made this tonight and it turned out super creamy—love the lemon zest with the Parmesan. I added a tiny splash more broth when it thickened too fast. 10/10 comfort food.

  28. User avatar herman.grant48 says:

    3 stars
Mine was a little too thick after the resting time—next time I’ll add a bit more cream or broth. Also I think 1 clove garlic felt small for me.

  29. User avatar herschel.oconner16 says:

    3 stars
Looks good, but I don’t like cooking with chicken broth. Can I use water instead?

    1. User avatar debi.wisoky says:

      2 stars
Water? Nah, that sounds bland. Chicken broth is where the flavor’s at! Don’t skip it!

    2. User avatar jeanine.batz19 says:

      4 stars
You can totally use water instead, but it might not have the same rich flavor. Maybe add some herbs to boost it up?

  30. User avatar wilbur.fisher says:

    4 stars
Garnish? What’s that? I just throw it on the plate. Still tasted OK tho.

    1. User avatar Spring Kuhlman Sr. says:

      4 stars
Garnish makes it look fancy! But hey, if it tasted good, that’s what matters! Keep it simple!

  31. 5 stars
The garlic step was perfect—smells amazing. The only tweak I made was adding a pinch of chili flakes. Felt restaurant-level.

  32. User avatar Falmer Archer says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly and the sauce never really thickened for me. I think my heat was too low? Still tasty though.

  33. 3 stars
Ok so I accidentally used half-and-half instead of heavy cream (oops) and it was still decent, just not as thick. Would recommend heavy cream if you want that restaurant feel.

    1. User avatar george.willms76 says:

      5 stars
Haha love that you still made it work! Half-and-half definitely makes it thinner—heavy cream has that extra fat for the thicker sauce. Next time you’ll get the full restaurant vibe.

    2. User avatar josephine.schaden says:

      2 stars
Oh no, half-and-half instead of heavy cream… I feel like that would ruin the texture, not gonna lie. Did it taste the same though? Also, is the lemon zest necessary or could I skip it?

  34. User avatar rena.pagac95 says:

    1 star
    Boring…

  35. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

    5 stars
Five stars! I added some shredded chicken at the end and it turned into a full meal. Creamy without being too heavy.

  36. User avatar crystle.kessler85 says:

    2 stars
I followed it mostly, but mine turned out kinda greasy. Maybe my garlic was too much? Or I didn’t toast long enough.

  37. 4 stars
Could have been a full 5 stars if it weren’t for the timing. Mine needed closer to 15 minutes simmering. Otherwise delicious—save yourself and check tenderness.

  38. User avatar Wilmer Heller says:

    4 stars
Okay but why does it say to cover the pan—mine was kind of splashy. Still delicious though. Next time I’ll lower the heat more.

  39. User avatar Falmer Archer says:

    4 stars
I followed it exactly and it got thick, but my orzo took closer to 15 minutes to be tender. Maybe my stove runs hot.

    1. User avatar kendall.stiedemann2025 says:

      5 stars
That sounds super plausible—if your stove runs hot, the timing can definitely drift. Also orzo brands vary a lot in thickness, so 15 minutes for tenderness doesn’t shock me. I usually rely more on “tender” than the clock and add a splash more broth if it’s getting too thick before it’s cooked.

  40. 3 stars
My sauce split a little after adding the cream. I whisked it and it came back together, so maybe the heat was too high.

    1. 3 stars
Hmm I think it might be the Parmesan—if it wasn’t fully dissolved it can make it weird, then the cream looks “split.” Also, I usually boil the broth way harder than the recipe says, so maybe don’t do that lol. But glad it came back!

    2. User avatar Falmer Gloomlurker says:

      5 stars
That sounds pretty normal with cream—once it hits too much heat it can split. Your save-whisk method is exactly what I’d do. Next time try lowering the heat before adding the cream and stir slowly.

  41. User avatar geoWizard says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I thought 2 cups broth for 1 cup orzo would be too much, but it absorbed nicely. Great comfort food.

  42. User avatar christeen.macejkovic39 says:

    5 stars
Made this last night and it turned out super creamy. The lemon zest really brightens everything—will definitely make again.

  43. 4 stars
So simple to make! I added some mushrooms, turned out great! Will make again.

  44. 5 stars
So comforting! I added a little extra Parmesan and it turned super creamy. The lemon zest really wakes it up—will make again.

    1. User avatar Caitlyn says:

      5 stars
Yes! The lemon zest is such a game changer—makes it taste way brighter for something so creamy. Extra Parmesan always helps too 😄

    2. User avatar naomi.hackett1955 says:

      3 stars
Hmm I tried something similar once but my orzo got kinda clumpy. Did you cover it while simmering and stir a lot? Also is 2 cups broth enough for 1 cup orzo? 🤔

  45. User avatar hong.hill says:

    4 stars
My orzo absorbed the liquid way quicker than 10–12 minutes—so I had to keep stirring and adding a little extra broth. Recipe still works, just watch it.

  46. User avatar priscilla.reichel2016 says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, mine looked watery at first. I thought I messed up, but after simmering a bit longer it thickened. Good save!

  47. User avatar Gregorio Volkman says:

    3 stars
This is good, but mine got a little too thick after it sat. I should’ve reserved some broth/cream to loosen at the end.

  48. User avatar Ms. Rey Wiza says:

    4 stars
Good flavor, but mine got a bit thick before the orzo was fully tender. I think my stove runs hot—add more broth if that happens. Still tasty though.

    1. User avatar pok.bechtelar7 says:

      3 stars
Mine didn’t thicken at all… I think I messed up the cream step? Orzo always feels kinda fragile. Anyway I’ll try adding broth sooner next time. Good flavor though.

    2. 5 stars
That happened to me once too—my burner runs hot. I ended up adding a splash more broth right when it started to tighten up, and the orzo came out perfect. The “thicken after resting” part is real!

  49. User avatar Lizette Parisian says:

    2 stars
I like orzo, but is this really pasta? Feels more like rice to me.

  50. User avatar terry.schmidt52 says:

    2 stars
Orzo confused me lol. I followed it but my noodles stayed kind of chewy even after 12 minutes. Maybe my stove runs cold?

  51. User avatar nina.mckenzie1 says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, I expected more “wow,” but it’s honestly pretty bland unless you go heavy on salt/pepper. Next time I’ll add a pinch of chili flakes.

  52. User avatar porfirio.emard1991 says:

    2 stars
Okay but where’s the protein? Like add chicken? I just ate it and felt kinda empty 😅

    1. 5 stars
Totally get that 😅 This is more of a creamy “side/dinner-y” orzo—if you want more protein, adding shredded rotisserie chicken or sautéed chicken breast would be perfect. Even chickpeas could work too!

  53. User avatar joe_banana says:

    2 stars
Needs more salt. Like, a lot more. Otherwise it tasted kinda bland to me. Garlic was nice though.

  54. User avatar Tommy Klocko says:

    5 stars
I followed the steps pretty closely. The orzo texture was perfect and the sauce clung to everything. Next time I’ll mince the garlic even finer so it melts in better.

    1. User avatar jeffie.blick1985 says:

      5 stars
Nice! I’ve found the garlic timing makes a big difference—finer mince definitely helps it blend in. Glad your sauce clung well too. 🙌

  55. 4 stars
Turned out pretty good! I used low-sodium broth and still had enough flavor. Next time I’ll stir a bit more so it doesn’t stick.

  56. User avatar Mrs. Edgar Bahringer says:

    4 stars
Pretty easy and quick for a weeknight. My orzo took closer to 15 minutes to get tender, but it still came out great.

    1. User avatar fallon.hyatt78 says:

      3 stars
Quick-ish, sure, but 15 min is still 15 min 😅 I think I might toast the orzo longer next time so it doesn’t get mushy. Also do you really use lemon zest? Sounds kinda odd but I’m willing to try.

    2. 5 stars
Glad you mentioned the orzo timing—mine always runs a bit long too. I’ll keep an eye out for “tender + mostly absorbed” rather than the clock. This sounds so cozy!

  57. User avatar Arwen Evenstar says:

    4 stars
Solid weeknight recipe. I subbed veggie broth and it still worked, but I needed a splash of extra broth near the end since my orzo drank more liquid.

    1. User avatar harold.baumbach1986 says:

      5 stars
Good call on the broth! Orzo is so thirsty—mine always drinks more than expected. I’ve started keeping extra broth on standby too.

    2. 3 stars
Huh, I followed it exactly and it was still kinda thick and gluey? Maybe my orzo was smaller? Also I don’t have lemon zest, can I just use juice?

  58. User avatar Humma Kavula says:

    2 stars
1 cup orzo feels like a lot of work for only 1 serving?? Also, I didn’t have lemon zest so I used lemon juice and it tasted kinda sour. Could be my fault.

  59. User avatar pete.smith26 says:

    5 stars
Lemon zest?? I was skeptical but it actually works. Next time I’ll add chicken too because I like it heartier.

  60. 5 stars
This turned out super creamy and the lemon zest really wakes it up. I used low-sodium broth and it was still flavorful. Will make again!
