Copycat McDonald’s Apple Pies

March 23, 2026

Copycat McDonald’s apple pies bring the nostalgic flavor of a fast food favorite right into your kitchen, combining a crispy golden crust with a warm, spiced apple filling. These handheld treats are loved for their satisfying crunch and sweet, comforting center, making them perfect for dessert, snacks, or a fun baking project.

The filling is made with tender apples cooked down with sugar, cinnamon, and a touch of lemon juice. As the apples soften, they release their natural sweetness while the spices create that signature cozy flavor. The mixture thickens slightly, forming a rich and smooth filling that holds perfectly inside the pastry.

What makes these pies stand out is their crispy exterior. Unlike traditional baked pies, this version is often fried or baked at a high temperature to achieve a similar crunch to the original. The pastry becomes golden and flaky, creating a satisfying contrast to the soft apple filling inside. For an extra authentic touch, the pies can be brushed with a light sugar glaze or dusted with cinnamon sugar once they are done.

These apple pies are shaped into small rectangles, making them easy to hold and enjoy on the go. Their size and texture make them especially appealing, delivering a perfect balance of crunch and sweetness in every bite. Whether served warm or slightly cooled, they maintain their delicious texture and flavor.

Copycat McDonald’s apple pies are surprisingly simple to make at home with just a few ingredients and basic techniques. They offer a fun way to recreate a familiar favorite while allowing you to control the ingredients and customize the flavor to your liking.

Perfect for sharing or enjoying as a personal treat, these apple pies capture the essence of a beloved classic. With their crispy shell and warmly spiced filling, they deliver comfort, nostalgia, and homemade goodness in every bite.

Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about the puff pastry being enough, but it turned out flaky and good. I’d maybe add a pinch more cinnamon next time.

    1. User avatar Lumberjack says:

      5 stars
Totally get the skepticism—puff pastry can be a little deceiving 😄 Glad yours turned out flaky! A pinch more cinnamon sounds perfect, just don’t overdo it or it can get overpowering.

  2. User avatar beata.herzog1995 says:

    2 stars
Nah, didn’t turn out like I thought. The puff pastry was too hard to work with. Stick to the original if you ask me.

  3. User avatar Bobbie Carroll says:

    5 stars
Omg, my kids are obsessed with these! Making again this weekend!

  4. User avatar Cedrick Hegmann DDS says:

    3 stars
Followed it exactly and mine still came out pale. Maybe my oven runs hot/cold? The pies tasted fine though, just not as golden as the picture.

    1. User avatar dannette.zulauf1996 says:

      4 stars
That sounds like an oven temp/placement issue—puff pastry really needs to brown. I’d try 410–425°F and bake on the middle rack, and make sure the egg wash is a bit thicker coverage. Also, if your apples are wetter, the filling can steam the pastry instead of browning.

  5. User avatar bobby.leannon2001 says:

    5 stars
These apple pies taste just like the real thing! I added a little extra cinnamon, and they were perfect. Definitely making them again!

    1. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

      5 stars
I can’t wait to try this! Your extra cinnamon tip sounds amazing! Do you think it would work with other fruits too?

  6. User avatar delmar.fritsch10 says:

    3 stars
My mom used to make this, but I think she skipped the nutmeg… whatever that is.

    1. User avatar cedric.koss43 says:

      4 stars
Nutmeg adds a nice flavor! You should try it, it makes a big difference.

  7. User avatar steve_maga says:

    4 stars
Yummy! Made them for my kids and they loved it. Simple recipe, easy to follow. Thank you!

  8. User avatar alfonzo.farrell says:

    3 stars
A bit tricky to fold, but the flavor was good. Next time I’ll try with less sugar. Not as sweet as McDonald’s, but healthier, I guess.

    1. User avatar lorenza.bergnaum says:

      5 stars
Glad you liked the flavor! Adjusting sugar sounds smart. Not everyone wants it super sweet. 😊

  9. User avatar yun.kilback1976 says:

    3 stars
400°F seems right but mine took closer to 30 minutes to get golden. Also, I used frozen puff pastry and didn’t thaw long enough—oops. Would recommend thawing fully.

    1. 5 stars
Thanks for the tip! I always forget puff pastry needs time to thaw. I’m gonna do it fully next time so the bake is even.

  10. User avatar dennis.botsford55 says:

    2 stars
These are fine but not really McDonald’s. The sweetness is a bit different and my filling tasted flatter. Maybe I used the wrong apple variety.

    1. User avatar Sand-Dial says:

      4 stars
I get what you mean—McDonald’s has that very specific apple flavor/texture. If your filling tasted flatter, try a tart apple like Granny Smith next time and cook the filling 5-8 minutes to concentrate the juices before filling.

    2. User avatar donya.heaney72 says:

      3 stars
Not gonna lie, I think it’s the cinnamon/sugar ratio. Also puff pastry makes a different “snap” than theirs. Mine came out pretty close tho—did you vent enough and let them cool for like 10 mins? Not sure on apple type either.

  11. 4 stars
Used store-bought filling instead of fresh apples. Still yummy!

  12. 5 stars
Very delicious! Just like home! Makes me feel nostalgic!

    1. User avatar rivka.rodriguez42 says:

      5 stars
So glad to hear that! These pies really take me back too!

    2. 2 stars
Really? I tried it and they didn’t taste like McDonald’s to me…

  13. User avatar Mr. Enid Bayer says:

    3 stars
I tried this, but my dough didn’t come out right. What did I do wrong?

  14. User avatar shirl.kerluke says:

    1 star
I ain’t got no puff pastry round here. This is stupid.

  15. User avatar Pat Pending says:

    2 stars
I think I prefer the originals. Too much work for me.

  16. 5 stars
These are spot on! Tastes just like the ones from McDonald’s!

  17. 5 stars
Perfect snack size! 20 minutes was just right for me at 400°F. The egg wash gives that nice glossy top like you’d get from a fast food place.

  18. User avatar Demon King Piccolo says:

    4 stars
1 tsp cinnamon?? that seems low… i’m more of a cinnamon 3x type person. Still good though, just next time I’ll freestyle it.

    1. User avatar ramiro.wyman2003 says:

      5 stars
Totally fair—1 tsp does sound a little timid if you’re a cinnamon-lover 😄 I’ve tried bumping it up too, just keep an eye on it so the filling doesn’t taste too “spiced.” Your freestyle approach makes sense!

  19. User avatar jimmie.zboncak24 says:

    3 stars
My apple mix was very runny at first. Next time I’ll dice smaller and let the apples sit with sugar/lemon for a few minutes before assembling. Otherwise it got messy.

  20. User avatar liberal.hero says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about the puff pastry rectangles being the right size, because mine looked weirdly flat. Tasted great, just not very pie-like. Maybe I cut them too small.

  21. User avatar junie.greenholt5 says:

    2 stars
I didn’t have nutmeg so I skipped it. Kinda bland? Maybe. I think it’s important for that “pie shop” flavor.

  22. User avatar erasmo.spencer says:

    5 stars
Tried these tonight—super nostalgic. The cinnamon/nutmeg combo with fresh lemon really hits. Mine browned a tiny bit too fast at 22 minutes, but still tasted like the real deal.

  23. User avatar hilario.grady32 says:

    3 stars
I don’t know… they looked like apple pies but didn’t taste like McDonald’s to me. Maybe the cinnamon ratio? Still ate them all lol.

    1. User avatar bennie.yundt11 says:

      3 stars
Maybe it’s not cinnamon but the apples lol. If they were more watery/less sweet, it won’t taste like the fast-food ones. I tried something similar and mine came out bland unless I used Granny Smith + more sugar. Just my two cents.

    2. User avatar belva.tillman46 says:

      5 stars
Ooo I love that you ate them all 😂 I’m guessing you’re right about the cinnamon—1 tsp can taste totally different depending on how fresh it is. Also McDonald’s might use a different apple variety. Still, sounds delicious!

  24. User avatar Ronnie Lueilwitz says:

    2 stars
I tried following exactly, but the apple mix seemed dry before baking. Maybe my apples were less juicy? The flavor was ok, not McD-level.

  25. User avatar Kog'Maw says:

    2 stars
Too much work for pies that are basically handheld—also I feel like the filling should cook down first to avoid sogginess. Still, the flavor is there.

  26. User avatar camille.heidenreich says:

    5 stars
These came out way better than I expected—crispy and sweet-tart. I added a tiny pinch more nutmeg and it was perfect. Definitely making again.

  27. User avatar liberal.hero says:

    4 stars
Pretty straightforward, but my filling was a little watery. Next time I’ll cook the apples down a few minutes first. Still tasty though—family went back for more.

  28. User avatar abram.rodriguez89 says:

    2 stars
I used pre-made thawed pastry (didn’t measure how it was thawed) and ended up with a leaky mess. Probably my fault, but the instructions don’t really say how juicy the apples should be.

  29. User avatar austin.walker28 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good for a homemade version. Mine leaked a bit though—next time I’ll crimp harder and make sure the filling isn’t too juicy. Still tasty!

  30. User avatar Sand-Dial says:

    2 stars
Question: do you have to thaw the puff pastry completely? Mine was still a little cold and it tore when I rolled it.

  31. User avatar micheal.keeling1 says:

    1 star
Terrible. 20–25 minutes is not enough in my oven. Plus the egg wash burned. I’m not saying the recipe is bad, just my kitchen hates me.

  32. User avatar Wispmother says:

    5 stars
Pretty easy and the puff pastry actually puffed! I did 22 minutes and they were perfectly golden. Definitely making again for movie night.

    1. User avatar brock.bruen68 says:

      5 stars
Love that! Puff pastry actually puffing is always the best sign 😄 Movie night apple pies sounds perfect.

  33. User avatar henry.bernier60 says:

    2 stars
I tried it but the dough didn’t puff up… like at all. Followed instructions exactly, temp was 400°F, oven paper, egg wash… idk. Maybe my puff pastry was old.

  34. User avatar tortoise says:

    5 stars
These were shockingly close to the real deal! Crispy, buttery, and the cinnamon/apple filling tasted super legit. I added a tiny pinch more nutmeg and it totally worked.

  35. User avatar penelope.rosenbaum59 says:

    4 stars
I was skeptical about how much filling fit, but it worked. Next time I’ll drain the apple juices a little so the bottoms don’t get soggy, but the flavor is really good.

    1. User avatar annice.raynor says:

      5 stars
Honestly I had the same fear about the filling amount, but mine held up too. Draining the apple juices is such a smart tweak—soggy bottoms are the worst. Thanks for the tip!

    2. User avatar ciera.mertz95 says:

      3 stars
Mine came out kinda runny, i think i undercrimped lol. Would it help to cook the apples first or is draining enough? Also 400F for 25 min seemed long for my oven.

  36. 5 stars
These are actually good—like, better than expected. I made a few smaller ones and baked a bit less time. Great snack.

  37. User avatar Falmer Shadowmaster says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, the nutmeg is kinda random. I left it out and it still tasted great—apple-cinnamon vibes only.

  38. 4 stars
Mine leaked a little, but I think I didn’t crimp hard enough. Still delicious though—would recommend egg wash on the edges more generously.

  39. User avatar cary.von84 says:

    5 stars
So good! I served these with vanilla ice cream and everyone was shocked they weren’t store-bought.

  40. User avatar oscar.rohan says:

    3 stars
If you like sweet pies, you’ll love this. But 1/2 cup sugar for 3 cups apples is kinda much? I ended up using less sugar and it was better to me. Also, nutmeg is optional but I like it.

  41. 3 stars
My fork-crimping skills are… not great. Also my slits were too tiny and they puffed weird, but they still tasted like apple pie. Would make again.

    1. User avatar reginald.braun14 says:

      3 stars
Mine always puff up like crazy too, I think my oven runs hot or my vent slits are off. But apple pie flavor is hard to mess up. I’d try making the slits bigger next time—less weird puff, more even bake.

    2. User avatar Frost Atronach says:

      5 stars
Honestly that still sounds like a win 😄 The fork-crimping and slits can be a pain, but if they tasted like apple pie I’d call it a success. Did you keep the slits small so they didn’t leak too much?

  42. User avatar herlinda.orn34 says:

    4 stars
Lol I crimped with a fork and the fork marks looked like a crime scene. Still ate them all. Very tasty, even if they were ugly.

  43. User avatar Walt Smedley says:

    4 stars
Not bad, but 20–25 minutes felt a little short for my oven. I had to bake closer to 30 until the bottoms browned. Flavor is on point.

  44. User avatar chaya.towne says:

    5 stars
These turned out way better than I expected—flaky crust and the apple filling tasted super close to the real deal. I added a tiny pinch more cinnamon and it was perfect.

    1. User avatar phylicia.runte28 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! I love when the puff pastry actually gets flaky like that. That little extra cinnamon really is the magic touch 😋

  45. 3 stars
Not gonna lie, I used pre-chopped apples and it tasted a bit watery. Also forgot nutmeg (brain moment). If you prep properly, though, it should be great.

  46. User avatar Peregrin Took says:

    3 stars
1 tbsp lemon juice? That’s random. Mine tasted kinda sour at first, but after cooling it mellowed. Would do a little less next time.

  47. User avatar kimberlie.macejkovic says:

    3 stars
I like the concept, but 20–25 minutes felt slightly under for my oven. Next time I’ll bake closer to 27-30 until the tops are a deeper brown.

    1. User avatar louis.heaney27 says:

      5 stars
Yeah I feel you—my oven runs hot so 20-25 works, but when I don’t trust it I go more like 28. Deeper brown = way better flavor.

  48. 3 stars
Ok but McDonald’s would never let you add nutmeg—thats probably why it tastes ‘off’ 😅. I still ate three though. The crust is legit.

  49. User avatar renaldo.tillman16 says:

    4 stars
I followed the steps exactly and the filling was tasty, but my pies leaked a bit and didn’t crimp as well as the pictures in my head. Still yummy though!

  50. User avatar woodchuck says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly and they looked great, but mine leaked a bit and got messy on the tray. Crimping was probably not tight enough—still tasted good though.

    1. User avatar The Allitnils says:

      5 stars
That’s so frustrating—leaky pies are the worst, but honestly it happens a lot with puff pastry if the seal isn’t perfect. Next time try pressing the edges a little more firmly (and maybe chill the filled pastries 10 minutes before baking). Still glad they tasted good!

  51. User avatar kristie.bergstrom says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, 3 cups of apples felt like a lot, but it ended up being just right. Filling was a little juicy so I cooked it 5 minutes on the stove first next time.

  52. User avatar rich.landlord says:

    3 stars
I don’t know… 400°F for 20-25 minutes felt short. The pastry was golden but the bottom wasn’t as crisp as I wanted. Maybe my oven runs cool.

  53. User avatar Chaurus Hunter says:

    4 stars
The nutmeg is optional but I used it and honestly I think it made it taste more “apple pie” and less “apple candy.” Nice.

  54. 4 stars
Pretty solid copycat! The filling tasted super close, and the puff pastry puffed nicely. I’d just suggest slicing the slits a bit bigger so they vent more.

    1. 4 stars
Hmm maybe. I’ve always made little slits but mine never burst—could be my oven. Also 6 rectangles feels like a lot, do you mean like small pies? Either way, love the copycat vibes!

    2. 5 stars
Totally agree—those slits matter. I did them a little timid the first time and the tops puffed but the filling got a bit steamy. Next batch I’m going bigger like you said.

  55. User avatar emelina.bode2014 says:

    5 stars
These turned out way better than I expected—crispy edges and the apple filling actually tastes like a real pie. I added the nutmeg and it made a big difference. Yum!

    1. User avatar Cordell Bechtelar DVM says:

      3 stars
I tried this once and mine were more like warm turnovers than actual pie, lol. Do you dice the apples pretty small? Also did you cool them at all before eating?

    2. User avatar burt.reichel9 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! “Real pie” flavor is exactly what I’m chasing with these. Nutmeg is the move—glad it worked for you!

  56. 5 stars
These came out way better than I expected. The cinnamon + nutmeg combo tastes super close to the real deal. My only tweak was adding a tiny pinch of salt to the filling and it made it pop.

  57. User avatar brant.lueilwitz34 says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about “copycat” claims. But the flavor is close and the crust is great. Mine leaked a tiny bit when I forgot to vent enough.

  58. User avatar isaiah.shields12 says:

    2 stars
Lol I put too much lemon juice and it tasted kinda sharp. Also my crimping looks like a kindergarden project 😂 Still ate them all.

    1. 5 stars
Haha I’ve done the exact same thing with lemon 😅 Sharp is better than bland though, and your honesty about still eating them all is relatable. Fork-crimp pies are always a little… artsy-looking 😂

  59. User avatar lyndon.lind2012 says:

    3 stars
400°F seems too hot? Mine browned fast on top around 15 minutes. I think next time I’ll drop to 375°F and bake a bit longer.

  60. User avatar Saruman the White says:

    4 stars
Apple pies for 25 minutes is a dream. I wish the instructions said whether the apples should be raw or cooked, because I like them softer. Mine were slightly crisp.
