Dakos

September 3, 2023

If you’re dreaming of the sun-drenched Greek islands, let your taste buds lead the way with Dakos, a simple, rustic dish from the island of Crete. Also known as koukouvagia (meaning “owl”), dakos is a traditional Cretan meze that effortlessly brings together the bold flavors of the Mediterranean using just a few humble ingredients.

At its core, dakos is a barley rusk, known as paximadi, topped with juicy grated or chopped tomatoes, creamy crumbles of feta or mizithra cheese, a drizzle of olive oil, and a sprinkling of dried oregano. The rusk softens slightly from the tomato juices and olive oil, but still holds its crunch, creating a beautiful contrast of textures in every bite.

What makes dakos so special is the purity of its ingredients. There’s no need for fancy sauces or complex techniques. The beauty lies in the quality: sun-ripened tomatoes, fragrant extra virgin olive oil, and authentic Greek cheese. With a few olives on the side and perhaps a few capers or fresh herbs like thyme or basil, dakos becomes the centerpiece of a light lunch, appetizer spread, or even a refreshing dinner on a hot summer evening.

It’s also a fantastic choice for those looking for healthy Mediterranean options. Dakos is vegetarian, high in fiber thanks to the barley rusk, and rich in healthy fats from the olive oil. It’s satisfying without being heavy and makes you feel like you’re eating right from a seaside taverna.

If you can’t find traditional Cretan rusks, you can substitute with whole grain bread that’s been lightly toasted or dried, but the real deal offers a satisfying crunch that’s hard to beat. Serve it with a glass of chilled white wine or ouzo for the ultimate Greek experience.

So if you’re craving something fresh, flavorful, and unbelievably easy, dakos is the answer. It’s proof that sometimes the simplest dishes leave the strongest impression.

Confused about the rusks, are they just any kind of hard bread??

    1. 5 stars
Yes, they’re like hard bread! They’re really popular in Greece. You can find them in Mediterranean stores if you don’t have them. Just make sure they are the Cretan kind for the full flavor!

  30. User avatar xiao.windler says:

    4 stars
Simple and delicious! But my kids wouldn’t eat it. 😢

    1. User avatar divina.jast1975 says:

Too much hassle for me. Just raw veggies on bread is quicker. Not worth the time.

    1. User avatar Claudio Mosciski says:

      4 stars
I get that! Sometimes simple is best. But Dakos is all about those flavors, you might just like it if you try it! 🥗

  42. 1 star
This is too much olive oil for me, made it super soggy. Disappointed.

  43. User avatar davida.littel88 says:

    3 stars
Can we put other types of cheese? That might taste better. Idk. Just thinking!

  44. 2 stars
What even is a Cretan rusk? Can I use normal bread instead?

  45. User avatar galen.dubuque27 says:

    3 stars
Isn’t dakos just a fancy name for bruschetta? I don’t think I need to follow this step-by-step.

  46. User avatar pearly.ebert says:

    5 stars
This is such a simple and delicious recipe! I added some extra olives and it was perfect.
