Chinese Orange Chicken

September 1, 2025

Chinese Orange Chicken is one of those dishes that has earned a special place on takeout menus around the world. With its crispy chicken pieces coated in a glossy, citrusy sauce, this dish is the perfect balance of sweet, tangy, and savory flavors. While it’s often associated with Chinese-American cuisine, Orange Chicken is inspired by traditional Chinese flavors and techniques, making it a wonderful blend of cultural influences.

What makes Orange Chicken so irresistible is its bold, vibrant sauce. Fresh orange juice and zest create a bright citrus flavor, while soy sauce, ginger, and garlic add savory depth. A touch of sweetness balances out the tang, and a slight hint of heat from chili flakes or peppers gives the dish a well-rounded taste. The chicken is typically battered and fried for that signature crunch, making each bite a satisfying mix of textures and flavors.

This dish has become a staple in American-Chinese restaurants, but its roots trace back to Hunan-style cooking, known for bold, spicy-sour flavors. Over time, chefs adapted the recipe to suit Western tastes, making it sweeter and more approachable. Today, it’s one of the most popular dishes at chains like Panda Express, where it has a devoted following.

Beyond takeout, Orange Chicken has gained popularity as a homemade dish. Home cooks enjoy recreating it for family dinners, often experimenting with lighter cooking methods like baking or air frying. It’s also a versatile dish, serve it over steamed rice, alongside vegetables, or even as part of a party spread.

Orange Chicken is a perfect example of how food travels and evolves. It takes inspiration from Chinese culinary traditions while becoming a uniquely beloved part of American food culture. Whether you’re picking it up from your favorite restaurant or trying your hand at making it from scratch, it’s a dish that delivers comfort and bold flavor in every bite.

The next time you’re craving something sweet, tangy, and deeply satisfying, Chinese Orange Chicken is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.

I followed the instructions but it turned out too sweet for my taste. Maybe less sugar next time? Just my opinion.

This is the best orange chicken recipe ever! I made it for my family and they loved it. So juicy and flavorful! Will definitely make again.

Meh. I don’t really think this tastes like orange chicken from the restaurant. Think I’ll stick to takeout. 😒

  4. 5 stars
Yum!!! I didn’t have rice vinegar so I used apple cider and it was still delish! 😍

  5. User avatar Kayce Quigley says:

    4 stars
Ok but I had to add way more soy sauce. I mean, come on, who only uses 1 tbsp for all that chicken?!

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree! I always need more soy sauce too. It’s just too bland otherwise! 😅

    2. User avatar paul.schaden24 says:

      3 stars
Really? I thought 1 tbsp was fine. Maybe you just like it saltier? 🤔

  6. User avatar Dwarven Shpere says:

Yummy! 🍊🍗 Delicious, will make again!

  7. 2 stars
Didn’t turn out like the restaurant’s… kinda disappointed.

    1. User avatar arthur.huel20 says:

      2 stars
Honestly, I think takeout is just better. Could be too much sugar in the sauce?

    2. User avatar shenita.fahey1999 says:

      4 stars
Maybe you overcooked the chicken? That can make a big difference. Try again!

  8. User avatar jamal.moen57 says:

I don’t really like ginger, can I leave it out? 🤔

So easy to make! I added some broccoli for an extra kick.

Great recipe! I didn’t have soy sauce, so I used Worcestershire sauce instead and it still rocked!

  11. 4 stars
Pretty good, but mine was a little too sweet. Next time I’ll cut the sugar in half and maybe add a pinch more vinegar. Still way better than takeout in my opinion.

    1. User avatar galina.monahan1966 says:

      5 stars
Totally makes sense—orange juice plus 1/2 cup sugar can push it sweet fast. Cutting the sugar in half is a great move, and a tiny extra pinch of vinegar should balance it out nicely. Do you think you used a sweeter orange batch or store-bought juice?

    2. User avatar sophie.boyle18 says:

      3 stars
Hmm mine was sweet too but I just added more cornstarch?? maybe to thicken and “hide” the sugar. Also I think 2 tbsp vinegar isn’t enough. Next time I’ll do half sugar like you said, and maybe double vinegar. Takeout is still better though 😅

  12. User avatar cody.dibbert66 says:

Easy peasy, lemon squeezy! 😂 Really good!

Doesn’t taste like the one from the restaurant. I think I might’ve added too much orange juice. Anyone else feel this way?

    2. 2 stars
I dunno, man. Tofu’s kinda bland compared to chicken. Might not be the same!

I don’t know why everyone loves this recipe. The chicken was a bit dry and the sauce was way too sweet for my taste.

    1. User avatar stephenie.goldner says:

      3 stars
Dry chicken? Never had that prob. Maybe cook it a lil less next time? Also, I love the sweetness! People are just too picky.

    2. User avatar Shaddam Corrino IV says:

      4 stars
I totally get what you mean! The sauce can be pretty sweet, but have you tried adding some chili flakes? It balances it out really well!

Too sweet for my taste. Maybe use less sugar next time…

  31. User avatar vada.anderson says:

Easy recipe, but I think it needs more sauce. I ended up with dry chicken. 😬

  32. User avatar gavin.tromp says:

    4 stars
The crispy part was good, but my chicken got a little too dark because I was impatient with the frying. Still tasted great though.

  33. User avatar oleta.harvey2023 says:

A big hit at the family dinner! 👍

  34. 2 stars

  37. User avatar amado.kertzmann26 says:

    4 stars
Where’s the ginger? I forgot to add but it still turned out decent. 🤷‍♂️

  38. 5 stars
Tried this tonight—surprisingly restaurant-y. The orange + vinegar balance is spot on, and the sauce clings way better than I expected.

  39. User avatar wilford.tromp says:

    5 stars
I was worried the cornstarch/flour mix would burn, but it browned nicely. The ginger-garlic combo is on point.

  40. User avatar shona.thompson2016 says:

    1 star
This is not real Chinese food, where’s the authentic stuff?!

  41. 5 stars
The sauce flavor is *bright* and sticky in a good way. I used fresh orange juice and it really made a difference—whole family went back for seconds.

  42. 4 stars
I followed the steps and the sauce thickened well, but it’s kinda sweet for my taste. I’d cut the sugar in half and add a pinch more vinegar.

  43. User avatar warner.walsh68 says:

    4 stars
I added some broccoli for color and it turned out great!

  44. User avatar Draugr Death Overlord says:

    3 stars
I dunno, my chicken ended up kinda soggy. Maybe I need to fry it longer? 🤔

  45. User avatar leon.kutch90 says:

Tastes just like takeout! Will make again for sure!

  46. User avatar young.sipes27 says:

I can’t believe people think this is good. The sauce was too sweet for my taste.

  47. User avatar riley.bogisich1950 says:

    3 stars
Not sure if this is “Chinese” as written—looks more like American orange chicken. Also 1 lb is a lot for just 2 tbsp oil… maybe I missed something?

  48. 2 stars
Why not just order from a restaurant? Easier that way.

    1. 5 stars
Cooking at home is way more fun! Plus, you can customize it to your taste.

  49. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    3 stars
Um, I think the orange juice might be too much. It just overpowers everything.

  50. 4 stars
For a beginner cook, this was super simple. My family loved it! Thanks!

  51. User avatar sybil.yundt53 says:

    4 stars

  52. User avatar lenna.dare28 says:

    1. User avatar joseph.moen2009 says:

  55. User avatar Verdie Hagenes says:

I used frozen chicken, is that okay? It didn’t taste right. 😒

    1. User avatar marty.lemke says:

      4 stars
Using frozen chicken is fine, but fresh chicken makes a big difference in flavor! Maybe try it again with fresh chicken next time. 😊

    2. User avatar Murray Emard says:

      3 stars
I always use frozen chicken, and it comes out fine! Maybe you missed a step in the sauce? 🤔

  56. User avatar drew.bergstrom says:

Amazing! I added some red pepper flakes for an extra kick. Will make again for sure!

    1. User avatar vernell.conn says:

Red pepper flakes? Never thought of that! Sounds delish. I might try it next time for sure. 😋

    2. User avatar graig.crist65 says:

      2 stars
I don’t know, it seems like too much sugar to me. Can it really be that good? 😕

  57. 5 stars
Delicious! My family ate it too fast 😅 The ginger/garlic combo with orange is chef’s kiss. I’ll double the sauce next time.

  58. User avatar ellsworth.smith79 says:

    5 stars
I don’t usually cook with orange juice, but wow. The zest makes it! I’d 100% make this again for guests.

  59. User avatar antione.satterfield says:

Needs more salt. Also, should’ve used thighs instead, breast got a little dry after frying.

    1. User avatar Falmer Warmonger says:

      4 stars
Hmm thighs might be better, but breast shouldn’t be that dry if you don’t over-fry. I’d try frying just until golden and keep the sauce simmer short—like barely toss and serve. Also did you preheat the oil all the way? Mine pops crispy that way.

    2. User avatar Rito Chieftain says:

      4 stars
I agree—mine always tastes a bit flat until I bump up the salt (especially since soy sauce is only 1 Tbsp here). I’d also slightly reduce the sugar next time if you add more salt.

  60. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    4 stars
Pretty tasty, but my chicken came out a little too crispy-dry. Next time I’ll toss it in sauce right before serving so it doesn’t overcook.

  61. User avatar shandi.torp says:

    4 stars
I followed it exactly and it worked, but wow—1/2 cup cornstarch is a lot. The coating stayed crispy for a while then softened after tossing. Not bad though!

  62. 3 stars
I mixed up the steps and cooked the sauce in the same pan after frying… smoke alarm situation lol. Flavor was still good, but cleanliness matters.

  63. 2 stars
why do u use ginger? it messes up the flavor, just use more garlic!

  64. User avatar Mrs. Elton Deckow says:

    3 stars
Honestly, it was kinda bland. Maybe I needed more spices?

  65. User avatar ben.schumm56 says:

    5 stars
This recipe is fantastic! Tastes just like the stuff I get at my favorite takeout place.

  66. User avatar andrew.fahey55 says:

    2 stars
My sauce never really thickened. I simmered longer and it did loosen again. I might have had the heat too low—any tips?

    1. User avatar clement.kautzer34 says:

      4 stars
I’d crank the heat a bit—medium-high usually gets it to coat quicker. Also make sure you simmer uncovered so the liquid actually reduces, not just warms.

  67. User avatar joe_banana says:

    2 stars
Honestly i did not like it. Soggy chicken. I fried too long 😅

  68. User avatar remona.grimes4 says:

    3 stars
Confused ’cause it said orange zest but its jus orange peel right? Anyway, turned out okay. Kind of a hassle tho.

  69. 2 stars
My chicken didn’t crisp—I think my oil wasn’t hot enough. The batter kinda went soggy. Sauce was good, but frying step needs clearer timing/temp.

    1. User avatar halflife4 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree on the frying—“medium heat” is vague. I’ve found I need the oil noticeably hotter (more like a consistent sizzle) or the cornstarch coating never sets and it turns pasty. Also letting it rest on a rack for a minute before saucing helps it stay crisp.

    2. 4 stars
I had this happen once too, but I think it’s more that the chicken was wet. If you pat it dry and don’t overcrowd the pan, it crisps better. Your sauce step sounds fine though—just don’t pour it on right away. Maybe turn the heat down when you add chicken so it doesn’t get steamy and soggy… idk, works for me 😅

  70. 3 stars
Not sure if “Chinese” is right—more like orange chicken vibes, which is fine. I also had to simmer longer for the sauce to thicken. Ended up tasty, just took patience.

  71. User avatar Future Trunks says:

    4 stars
Not bad, but I found it a bit too sweet. I reduced the sugar by like a third and it was much better.

  72. 1 star
This is not real Chinese food! It’s way too sugary and not authentic.

  73. User avatar lawanna.vonrueden59 says:

    3 stars
This is more like orange sweet-and-sour than “real” Chinese orange chicken (maybe?). But it’s still tasty and easy.

  74. 3 stars
I forgot to add the orange zest and it still tasted okay, but it was missing that fresh punch. Lesson learned: zest matters.

    1. User avatar analisa.hartmann says:

      4 stars
I did the same thing once (was rushing lol). It was still good, but my sauce tasted kinda like orange-flavored sweet-and-sour, not that bright restaurant vibe. Now I always zest first.

    2. User avatar cathrine.reichert says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—orange zest is the “fresh” part. Orange juice alone tastes more flat/sweet, but zest gives that real punch. Good lesson!

  75. User avatar Sandy Spring says:

    2 stars
Meh. Sauce is good but the chicken breading was kinda bland? Maybe I under-seasoned the flour/cornstarch mix (even though recipe doesn’t mention).

  76. User avatar Brand-shei says:

    4 stars
I liked the flavor, but 1/2 cup cornstarch + 1/4 cup flour feels like a lot for a pound of chicken. Next time I’ll cut the coating slightly.

    1. User avatar malka.kuvalis34 says:

      4 stars
Totally agree—1/2 cup cornstarch + 1/4 cup flour is a *lot* for a pound of chicken. I’d try cutting it too; you want crisp, not thick wall-to-wall coating.

  77. User avatar gonzalo.kuphal5 says:

    5 stars
This came out super crispy, and the orange sauce actually tastes bright (not just sweet). I used fresh OJ like the recipe said and it made a difference. Will make again!

  78. User avatar Mr. Prosser says:

    3 stars
1 pound chicken breast and 2 tbsp oil for frying… feels low? I used more oil and it turned out better. Still a nice recipe, but I’d adjust frying method.
