Chinese Chicken Wings

December 6, 2024

Chinese chicken wings are a flavorful, sticky, and satisfying dish that blends the savory depth of soy sauce with the sweetness of honey or sugar, creating a deliciously balanced glaze. Whether served as an appetizer, snack, or part of a larger meal, these wings are sure to delight your taste buds and are perfect for any occasion, from casual dinners to festive gatherings.

The key to perfect Chinese chicken wings lies in the marinade and sauce. The wings are coated in a mixture of soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, garlic, ginger, and a touch of sugar or honey. This marinade infuses the wings with rich umami flavors and a subtle sweetness that caramelizes beautifully when cooked. The combination of ginger and garlic adds an aromatic depth, making each bite a burst of savory goodness.

Once marinated, the wings are either baked or fried to achieve a crispy, golden exterior, locking in all the juicy, tender meat inside. The crispy skin is key to adding a satisfying crunch that contrasts with the succulent meat, making each wing irresistible. After they’re cooked, the wings are coated in a thick, glossy glaze made from the remaining marinade, which intensifies the flavor and adds a luscious finish.

To garnish, sprinkle the wings with sesame seeds and chopped green onions, which add a pop of color and an extra layer of texture. You can also drizzle a bit of extra hoisin or soy sauce over the wings for an even richer flavor.

These Chinese chicken wings are perfect for game days, parties, or as a tasty side dish to complement other Chinese-inspired meals. Their sweet, savory, and slightly tangy profile, along with the crispy texture, makes them a crowd-pleaser every time. Whether you’re serving them as finger food or paired with rice and vegetables, Chinese chicken wings are a delightful treat that’s both easy to make and incredibly delicious.

400°F for 45 minutes was a little long for my oven—edges got dark before the middle felt fully done. I’d recommend checking at around 35-40 and maybe broiling the last 2 minutes.

Totally agree—my oven runs hot too. I start checking at 35 min and pull them when they’re crispy on the outside, not just “golden.” The foil + rack helps, but time definitely varies.

Took me way longer to cook than I thought. 45 mins is too much! 🤨

I agree, 45 mins feels like way too much. I prefer recipes that are quicker! Maybe a stir-fry next time?

Uhm I’m not sure if my hoisin was expired but it tasted kinda off. Otherwise the idea is solid.

The ginger garlic mix smells amazing. However, my wings didn’t fully crisp on the rack until I broiled them for 2-3 minutes at the end.

Why do you have to bake them? Just fry them, tastes better!

Frying is good too, but baking can make them crispy without all the oil! 😊

I don’t know. The sauce was too sweet for me. I’ll stick to BBQ next time. 😕
