Chinese Orange Chicken

September 1, 2025

Chinese Orange Chicken is one of those dishes that has earned a special place on takeout menus around the world. With its crispy chicken pieces coated in a glossy, citrusy sauce, this dish is the perfect balance of sweet, tangy, and savory flavors. While it’s often associated with Chinese-American cuisine, Orange Chicken is inspired by traditional Chinese flavors and techniques, making it a wonderful blend of cultural influences.

What makes Orange Chicken so irresistible is its bold, vibrant sauce. Fresh orange juice and zest create a bright citrus flavor, while soy sauce, ginger, and garlic add savory depth. A touch of sweetness balances out the tang, and a slight hint of heat from chili flakes or peppers gives the dish a well-rounded taste. The chicken is typically battered and fried for that signature crunch, making each bite a satisfying mix of textures and flavors.

This dish has become a staple in American-Chinese restaurants, but its roots trace back to Hunan-style cooking, known for bold, spicy-sour flavors. Over time, chefs adapted the recipe to suit Western tastes, making it sweeter and more approachable. Today, it’s one of the most popular dishes at chains like Panda Express, where it has a devoted following.

Beyond takeout, Orange Chicken has gained popularity as a homemade dish. Home cooks enjoy recreating it for family dinners, often experimenting with lighter cooking methods like baking or air frying. It’s also a versatile dish, serve it over steamed rice, alongside vegetables, or even as part of a party spread.

Orange Chicken is a perfect example of how food travels and evolves. It takes inspiration from Chinese culinary traditions while becoming a uniquely beloved part of American food culture. Whether you’re picking it up from your favorite restaurant or trying your hand at making it from scratch, it’s a dish that delivers comfort and bold flavor in every bite.

The next time you’re craving something sweet, tangy, and deeply satisfying, Chinese Orange Chicken is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.

I followed the instructions but it turned out too sweet for my taste. Maybe less sugar next time? Just my opinion.

This is the best orange chicken recipe ever! I made it for my family and they loved it. So juicy and flavorful! Will definitely make again.

Meh. I don’t really think this tastes like orange chicken from the restaurant. Think I’ll stick to takeout. 😒

  4. 5 stars
Yum!!! I didn’t have rice vinegar so I used apple cider and it was still delish! 😍

  5. User avatar Kayce Quigley says:

    4 stars
Ok but I had to add way more soy sauce. I mean, come on, who only uses 1 tbsp for all that chicken?!

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree! I always need more soy sauce too. It’s just too bland otherwise! 😅

    2. User avatar paul.schaden24 says:

      3 stars
Really? I thought 1 tbsp was fine. Maybe you just like it saltier? 🤔

  6. User avatar Dwarven Shpere says:

Yummy! 🍊🍗 Delicious, will make again!

  7. 2 stars
Didn’t turn out like the restaurant’s… kinda disappointed.

    1. User avatar arthur.huel20 says:

      2 stars
Honestly, I think takeout is just better. Could be too much sugar in the sauce?

    2. User avatar shenita.fahey1999 says:

      4 stars
Maybe you overcooked the chicken? That can make a big difference. Try again!

I don’t really like ginger, can I leave it out? 🤔

So easy to make! I added some broccoli for an extra kick.

  10. User avatar shayla.schamberger says:

Great recipe! I didn’t have soy sauce, so I used Worcestershire sauce instead and it still rocked!

  11. 4 stars
Pretty good, but mine was a little too sweet. Next time I’ll cut the sugar in half and maybe add a pinch more vinegar. Still way better than takeout in my opinion.

    1. User avatar galina.monahan1966 says:

      5 stars
Totally makes sense—orange juice plus 1/2 cup sugar can push it sweet fast. Cutting the sugar in half is a great move, and a tiny extra pinch of vinegar should balance it out nicely. Do you think you used a sweeter orange batch or store-bought juice?

    2. User avatar sophie.boyle18 says:

      3 stars
Hmm mine was sweet too but I just added more cornstarch?? maybe to thicken and “hide” the sugar. Also I think 2 tbsp vinegar isn’t enough. Next time I’ll do half sugar like you said, and maybe double vinegar. Takeout is still better though 😅

  12. User avatar cody.dibbert66 says:

    5 stars
Easy peasy, lemon squeezy! 😂 Really good!

This was delish! My family loved it, especially the sweet and tangy sauce. Will def make again!

  14. 3 stars
Doesn’t taste like the one from the restaurant. I think I might’ve added too much orange juice. Anyone else feel this way?

  15. User avatar Frodo Baggins says:

This was a hit at dinner! The kids loved it. Will make again!

    1. User avatar lyman.luettgen2019 says:

Looks good, but I don’t get how it would taste so good with all that sugar. Isn’t that too much?

    2. 5 stars
Glad to hear your kids loved it! It’s a favorite in our house too!

  16. 5 stars
The flavor is bright and not fake-sweet like takeout sometimes. I’ll definitely make this again for weeknights.

    1. User avatar steve_maga says:

      5 stars
Yes!! That’s exactly what I look for—bright citrus without that sticky takeout sweetness. I made this last week and it still tasted great reheated for lunch.

    2. User avatar dawne.hodkiewicz says:

      4 stars
Glad it worked for you. I tried something like this before and my sauce got kinda thin—did you reduce it longer or was it thick right away? Also, does the orange zest make it bitter at all?

  17. User avatar melanie.cummerata19 says:

  20. 3 stars
Easy to make but my chicken turned out mushy.. maybe I did something wrong.

  21. User avatar frances.hintz says:

    4 stars
Can I substitute the chicken with tofu? Gonna try it!

    1. User avatar Frostbite Spider says:

      5 stars
Absolutely! Tofu will soak up the orange sauce and taste great! Good luck! 😊

    2. 2 stars
I dunno, man. Tofu’s kinda bland compared to chicken. Might not be the same!

  22. User avatar elva.cormier says:

This recipe was surprisingly easy! My kids loved it. Thanks for sharing!

    1. User avatar arlette.langosh12 says:

Really? I didn’t think it would be that easy. I struggle with frying chicken. Did you have any issues?

    2. 5 stars
I’m glad to hear that! It’s awesome when the whole family enjoys a meal. What will you try making next?

  23. User avatar Rosa Sisters says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, I accidentally used bottled orange juice and it was still pretty good. I think the zest helps a lot. Would recommend reducing sugar a touch if you like it less sweet.

    1. 5 stars
That’s good to know! I’ve been using freshly squeezed, but bottled might be totally workable—especially if you’re adding zest like you did. Reducing the sugar a touch is probably spot on if someone prefers it less sweet.

  24. User avatar deon.tremblay1978 says:

Best orange chicken recipe ever!! 🍊❤️ Yum!

  25. User avatar jorge.labadie1971 says:

I don’t know why everyone loves this recipe. The chicken was a bit dry and the sauce was way too sweet for my taste.

    1. User avatar stephenie.goldner says:

      3 stars
Dry chicken? Never had that prob. Maybe cook it a lil less next time? Also, I love the sweetness! People are just too picky.

    2. User avatar Shaddam Corrino IV says:

      4 stars
I totally get what you mean! The sauce can be pretty sweet, but have you tried adding some chili flakes? It balances it out really well!

  26. User avatar kris.wilderman19 says:

    1 star
Made it today and it was a disaster! Chicken was soggy and the sauce just didn’t stick. 😒

  27. 4 stars
I’m skeptical about 1/2 cup cornstarch + 1/4 cup flour—seemed like a lot of dry stuff. But it actually works: crispy outside, tender inside. Nice balance with the vinegar.

  28. User avatar silas.jacobs says:

    2 stars
I’m not a cook, but this seemed simple enough. I burnt the chicken though oops.

The sauce was too sweet for my liking, maybe less sugar next time? 🤔

  31. User avatar gale.dubuque1982 says:

    3 stars
The instructions are clear, but I wish it told you how hot to fry. I cooked mine until golden, and it ended up slightly soft in the middle. Sauce helped cover it, but still.

  32. User avatar otha.baumbach says:

    4 stars
Good idea, but my batter coating felt a little dry. I think I should’ve mixed the flour/cornstarch with a touch more sauce or let the chicken sit longer after tossing. Still tasted great though.

    1. 5 stars
Totally makes sense—if the flour/cornstarch isn’t just slightly tacky, it can come out a bit dry. I’ve found letting the chicken sit 10–15 minutes after tossing helps the coating hydrate before frying. Also, when I make the batter, I add a teaspoon or two more of the sauce mix (or a splash of orange juice) right before tossing if it looks too dry. Glad it still tasted great though!

  33. User avatar rocky.weissnat2024 says:

    5 stars
Yum! I added some chili flakes for a spicy kick! 🔥 Sooo good!

    1. User avatar berry.daugherty42 says:

Easy recipe, but I think it needs more sauce. I ended up with dry chicken. 😬

  37. User avatar gavin.tromp says:

The crispy part was good, but my chicken got a little too dark because I was impatient with the frying. Still tasted great though.

    5 stars
A big hit at the family dinner! 👍

  39. User avatar fernando.williamson says:

    4 stars
Really easy recipe but I got confused at step 2—do you need medium heat the whole time? I kinda turned it up and some pieces browned too fast. Lesson learned: patience!

  40. User avatar agustin.ryan93 says:

    3 stars
Pretty simple, but I’m skeptical about using both soy sauce and a lot of sugar—felt a little imbalanced. Might work better with less sugar for my taste.

  41. 2 stars
Yuck! This was way too sweet for me. Not what I expected from Orange Chicken. 2 stars.

  42. User avatar wilson.bashirian15 says:

Where’s the ginger? I forgot to add but it still turned out decent. 🤷‍♂️

  45. 5 stars
Tried this tonight—surprisingly restaurant-y. The orange + vinegar balance is spot on, and the sauce clings way better than I expected.

  46. User avatar wilford.tromp says:

    5 stars
I was worried the cornstarch/flour mix would burn, but it browned nicely. The ginger-garlic combo is on point.

This is not real Chinese food, where’s the authentic stuff?!

  48. 5 stars
The sauce flavor is *bright* and sticky in a good way. I used fresh orange juice and it really made a difference—whole family went back for seconds.

  49. 4 stars
I followed the steps and the sauce thickened well, but it’s kinda sweet for my taste. I’d cut the sugar in half and add a pinch more vinegar.

  50. User avatar warner.walsh68 says:

    4 stars
I added some broccoli for color and it turned out great!

  51. User avatar idell.klein37 says:

    4 stars
I like the flavor combo, but mine got a little too sweet. Next time I’ll reduce the sugar or simmer the sauce a bit less. Still tasty though.

  52. User avatar drema.muller33 says:

    4 stars
Tasted great but my batter didn’t come out super crispy—maybe I overcrowded the pan. Next time I’ll fry in smaller batches. Still, the flavor combo is awesome.

  53. User avatar Draugr Death Overlord says:

    3 stars
I dunno, my chicken ended up kinda soggy. Maybe I need to fry it longer? 🤔

  54. User avatar lane.konopelski says:

Made this tonight and it was way better than I expected. The orange zest really makes it pop, and the sauce clings nicely. Crispy chicken stayed crisp too—nice balance.

  55. 5 stars
This is *way* better than takeout for me. The sauce is bright and sticky without tasting overly sweet. I used fresh squeezed OJ like the recipe says and wow.

  56. User avatar eboni.upton says:

    5 stars
Wow, the ginger/garlic really comes through. I added green onions like the recipe says and it looked restaurant-style. My whole family went back for seconds.

  57. User avatar leon.kutch90 says:

    5 stars
Tastes just like takeout! Will make again for sure!

  58. User avatar young.sipes27 says:

  59. User avatar riley.bogisich1950 says:

Not sure if this is “Chinese” as written—looks more like American orange chicken. Also 1 lb is a lot for just 2 tbsp oil… maybe I missed something?

  60. 2 stars
Why not just order from a restaurant? Easier that way.

    1. 5 stars
Cooking at home is way more fun! Plus, you can customize it to your taste.

  61. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    3 stars
Um, I think the orange juice might be too much. It just overpowers everything.

  62. User avatar theron.kilback says:

    4 stars
Not sure if it’s ‘Chinese’ exactly, but the taste is great. I used minced ginger from a jar and it still worked.

  63. 4 stars
For a beginner cook, this was super simple. My family loved it! Thanks!

  64. User avatar sierra.frami98 says:

    3 stars
The sauce thickened fast for me, then I added chicken and it got kind of goopy. Maybe my heat was too high. Flavor was still good though—ginger garlic is on point.

  65. User avatar sybil.yundt53 says:

    4 stars
Who knew Orange Chicken could be this simple? I’m impressed!

  66. User avatar lenna.dare28 says:

Not sure about frying chicken, sounds complicated. Can’t I just bake it? 🤔

  67. User avatar tyrone.little says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly and the coating was kinda bready instead of crispy. Maybe I didn’t fry hot enough—oil temp matters a lot.

  68. 4 stars

    1. User avatar marty.lemke says:

Using frozen chicken is fine, but fresh chicken makes a big difference in flavor! Maybe try it again with fresh chicken next time. 😊

    2. User avatar Murray Emard says:

I always use frozen chicken, and it comes out fine! Maybe you missed a step in the sauce? 🤔

I don’t know, it seems like too much sugar to me. Can it really be that good? 😕

  72. 5 stars
Delicious! My family ate it too fast 😅 The ginger/garlic combo with orange is chef’s kiss. I’ll double the sauce next time.

  73. User avatar ellsworth.smith79 says:

I don’t usually cook with orange juice, but wow. The zest makes it! I’d 100% make this again for guests.

  74. User avatar glendora.hane62 says:

Delicious and actually impressive for the ingredients list. I didn’t have rice vinegar so I used apple cider vinegar and it still worked pretty okay.

  75. User avatar antione.satterfield says:

Needs more salt. Also, should’ve used thighs instead, breast got a little dry after frying.

    1. User avatar Falmer Warmonger says:

      4 stars
Hmm thighs might be better, but breast shouldn’t be that dry if you don’t over-fry. I’d try frying just until golden and keep the sauce simmer short—like barely toss and serve. Also did you preheat the oil all the way? Mine pops crispy that way.

    2. User avatar Rito Chieftain says:

      4 stars
I agree—mine always tastes a bit flat until I bump up the salt (especially since soy sauce is only 1 Tbsp here). I’d also slightly reduce the sugar next time if you add more salt.

  76. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    4 stars
Pretty tasty, but my chicken came out a little too crispy-dry. Next time I’ll toss it in sauce right before serving so it doesn’t overcook.

  77. User avatar shandi.torp says:

    4 stars
I followed it exactly and it worked, but wow—1/2 cup cornstarch is a lot. The coating stayed crispy for a while then softened after tossing. Not bad though!

  78. 3 stars
I mixed up the steps and cooked the sauce in the same pan after frying… smoke alarm situation lol. Flavor was still good, but cleanliness matters.

  79. 2 stars
why do u use ginger? it messes up the flavor, just use more garlic!

  80. User avatar pedro.senger says:

    3 stars
I like the flavor combo, but 1/2 cup cornstarch + 1/4 cup flour feels like a lot. Mine came out super thick on the chicken and a bit too bready. Next time I’d cut the coating.

  81. User avatar Mrs. Elton Deckow says:

    3 stars
Honestly, it was kinda bland. Maybe I needed more spices?

  82. User avatar brook.klocko says:

    3 stars
The flavor is nice, but the chicken got soggy on me after about 10 minutes. Maybe I under-fried or the sauce simmered too long. Tasted good regardless.

  83. User avatar Miss Marine Rosenbaum says:

    3 stars
Could be my fault, but the sauce never really thickened for me. I simmered longer and it finally came together.

    1. User avatar filiberto.gleason says:

      2 stars
Mine didn’t thicken either—maybe because I used store-bought orange juice? I simmered forever and it stayed kinda thin. Could it need cornstarch in the sauce, not just on the chicken coating?

    2. User avatar suk.bayer1990 says:

      4 stars
Happens! The sauce often needs a bit more than “slightly thickens” depending on heat and how much moisture is in the juice. Next time, simmer with the pan uncovered and let it reduce a touch before adding the chicken.

  84. User avatar ellena.kunde says:

    2 stars
Mine tasted kinda like orange soda? I don’t know if my zest was too much or the ratio is just sweet-soda vibes. I’d maybe use less sugar and more vinegar.

  85. User avatar ben.schumm56 says:

    5 stars
This recipe is fantastic! Tastes just like the stuff I get at my favorite takeout place.

  86. User avatar nannie.rogahn says:

    4 stars
Not bad! I followed it pretty closely, but my sauce didn’t thicken much—maybe I didn’t simmer long enough. Still tasted great though, like a brighter take on takeout.

  87. User avatar andrew.fahey55 says:

    2 stars
My sauce never really thickened. I simmered longer and it did loosen again. I might have had the heat too low—any tips?

    1. User avatar clement.kautzer34 says:

      4 stars
I’d crank the heat a bit—medium-high usually gets it to coat quicker. Also make sure you simmer uncovered so the liquid actually reduces, not just warms.

  88. User avatar joe_banana says:

    2 stars
Honestly i did not like it. Soggy chicken. I fried too long 😅

  89. User avatar remona.grimes4 says:

    3 stars
Confused ’cause it said orange zest but its jus orange peel right? Anyway, turned out okay. Kind of a hassle tho.

  90. User avatar ligia.baumbach says:

    4 stars
I’m skeptical about frying + then simmering in sauce, but it actually kept some crunch. The sauce thickens nicely. I might reduce sugar a bit next time because it’s pretty sweet.

5 stars? no. It was okay. Sauce was good but frying step took forever and got messy lol.

Totally fair—this one *can* get messy. I’ve found frying faster if the oil is fully hot and the pieces aren’t crowded. Also draining on paper towels helps keep the coating crispy instead of soggy. Glad the sauce still hit though!

I did something similar before, but I usually add a splash of chili sauce too. Still, the sauce here looks legit—ginger and garlic are on point.

    1. 3 stars
I tried it but my sauce got kinda thin—maybe I didnt simmer long enuf? Also I used bottled OJ once and it was not the same. Still tasty though, ngl.

    2. 5 stars
Yes!! The ginger/garlic combo is the whole point. I added a little extra zest the second time and it tasted way more “fresh” instead of just sweet.

Just… wow. I served it over rice and everyone went back for seconds. The smell while simmering the sauce is unreal.

That’s the best kind of compliment 😄 I love when the simmering sauce smells like you walked into a real takeout spot. Did you squeeze the orange yourself or use bottled? I always think fresh makes a big difference.

Sounds good but I’m confused—does it really need both cornstarch AND flour? I tried something like this once and it turned out kinda gummy. Maybe my sauce was too hot when it thickened? Either way I’d try it over rice again I guess.

This is honestly the first orange chicken recipe that tastes like the real deal. I used fresh squeezed juice and zest, and wow. Will repeat!

Pretty tasty, but mine turned out a little too sweet. Next time I’ll cut the sugar down to 1/3 cup.

    1. User avatar Samwise Gamgee says:

      5 stars
Glad you tried it! Yeah, with 1/2 cup sugar in the sauce it can swing sweet depending on how juicy your oranges are. Cutting to 1/3 cup sounds like a perfect tweak—might also help to simmer a little less so it doesn’t reduce too far.

    2. User avatar alissa.mann1992 says:

      4 stars
Mine was sweet too—maybe because I used bottled orange juice (so… kinda sweeter). I’ll try lowering sugar like you said. Also, does it thicken more if you cook longer? I think mine got syrupy and I was like uh oh lol.

I’m skeptical about orange chicken being ‘Chinese’… but food is food I guess. I tried it anyway and it was pretty tasty. Sauce is sweet though—consider reducing sugar if you’re not into sweet heatless stuff.

Mine turned out okay, but the coating didn’t feel super crunchy—more like soft-crumb. I wonder if I should fry hotter or coat in cornstarch only.

    1. User avatar ronnie.metz says:

      4 stars
Yeah, that sounds like the oil temp might’ve been a bit low or the coating didn’t have time to fully crisp. I’d try hotter oil (closer to high/medium-high) and make sure the pieces are fairly dry before coating. Also—using only cornstarch can help some people get a more crisp, “shattery” texture.

  98. 2 stars
My chicken didn’t crisp—I think my oil wasn’t hot enough. The batter kinda went soggy. Sauce was good, but frying step needs clearer timing/temp.

Totally agree on the frying—“medium heat” is vague. I’ve found I need the oil noticeably hotter (more like a consistent sizzle) or the cornstarch coating never sets and it turns pasty. Also letting it rest on a rack for a minute before saucing helps it stay crisp.

    2. 4 stars
I had this happen once too, but I think it’s more that the chicken was wet. If you pat it dry and don’t overcrowd the pan, it crisps better. Your sauce step sounds fine though—just don’t pour it on right away. Maybe turn the heat down when you add chicken so it doesn’t get steamy and soggy… idk, works for me 😅

  99. 3 stars
Not sure if “Chinese” is right—more like orange chicken vibes, which is fine. I also had to simmer longer for the sauce to thicken. Ended up tasty, just took patience.

This is better than takeout (don’t @ me). The ginger/garlic combo with orange juice is super addictive. I’d serve it with steamed broccoli and rice every week if my wallet allowed.

Not bad, but I found it a bit too sweet. I reduced the sugar by like a third and it was much better.

  102. 1 star
This is not real Chinese food! It’s way too sugary and not authentic.

The sauce thickened nicely after a few minutes. I added a pinch of chili flakes too and it was chef’s kiss.

This is more like orange sweet-and-sour than “real” Chinese orange chicken (maybe?). But it’s still tasty and easy.

Orange chicken?? Sounds weird but… wow. I get it now.

  106. User avatar eugene.dickinson says:

My orange juice wasn’t sweet enough, so the sauce tasted a bit flat until I added extra sugar. Otherwise, it was good though!

    1. User avatar Gormlaith says:

      5 stars
Good to know! I always worry the sauce will be too tart with freshly squeezed OJ. Glad extra sugar fixed it—might try a little more right from the start next time.

      3 stars
Mine was sweet enough… but I think your orange juice might’ve been too watery? Like if the oranges weren’t super ripe. Try using more zest or even a splash of concentrate instead of plain sugar.

  107. 3 stars
Not sure about using both cornstarch and flour—will it stay crunchy once it hits the sauce? I feel like it might get soggy fast.

  108. User avatar eula.reichert1989 says:

I tried this once and my chicken came out dry. I think next time I’ll marinate or reduce cooking time.

  109. 3 stars
I forgot to add the orange zest and it still tasted okay, but it was missing that fresh punch. Lesson learned: zest matters.

    1. User avatar analisa.hartmann says:

      4 stars
I did the same thing once (was rushing lol). It was still good, but my sauce tasted kinda like orange-flavored sweet-and-sour, not that bright restaurant vibe. Now I always zest first.

    2. User avatar cathrine.reichert says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—orange zest is the “fresh” part. Orange juice alone tastes more flat/sweet, but zest gives that real punch. Good lesson!

Meh. Sauce is good but the chicken breading was kinda bland? Maybe I under-seasoned the flour/cornstarch mix (even though recipe doesn’t mention).
