Chicken Burger

January 8, 2025

A chicken burger is a lighter, leaner alternative to the classic beef burger, offering a delicious and satisfying meal that’s just as customizable and indulgent. With juicy, well-seasoned chicken patties, it’s a perfect choice for those seeking a healthier option without sacrificing flavor. Whether grilled, pan-fried, or baked, chicken burgers are versatile and can be topped with a variety of ingredients, making them suitable for different tastes and preferences.

The foundation of a great chicken burger is, of course, the chicken patty. Ground chicken breast is commonly used, providing a lean protein base, though ground thigh meat can be added for a bit more juiciness and flavor. The patty is seasoned with a blend of herbs and spices, such as garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and a pinch of paprika or cayenne for a touch of heat. For extra moisture, ingredients like grated zucchini or breadcrumbs can be mixed into the patty, ensuring it stays tender and juicy.

Once cooked, the chicken burger can be layered with all your favorite toppings. Crisp lettuce, juicy tomato slices, and pickles are classic choices, while cheese – whether cheddar, Swiss, or a creamy goat cheese – adds richness. You can also get creative with more adventurous toppings, like avocado, sautĂ©ed mushrooms, or a tangy barbecue sauce, depending on your preferences.

For the bun, a soft, lightly toasted brioche bun is a popular option, but whole wheat or lettuce wraps can be used for a lighter touch. The burger is often served with a side of crispy fries or a fresh salad for a well-rounded meal.

Chicken burgers offer a healthier alternative to traditional beef burgers without compromising on taste. They’re perfect for casual cookouts, weeknight dinners, or meal prepping for the week ahead. With endless topping combinations and simple preparation, chicken burgers are sure to become a favorite go-to for a quick, delicious meal.

I don’t think chicken can be a burger. Isn’t it just a chicken sandwich? Seems misleading.

Yum! I added avocado and it took it to another level! Perfect for summer grilling.

The instructions are clear but I wish it had a tip for checking doneness (like internal temp). I guessed and my first one was slightly dry, not terrible though.

I used beef instead of chicken. It was hella good!

Disappointing. I thought it would taste better. Not my fav.

Not sure about using mayo AND ketchup together
feels a little messy? But the cheddar and tomato balance it out. I might just do one sauce next time.

    1. 4 stars
Totally get you—mayo + ketchup can feel weird at first. I usually do a thin layer of each so it doesn’t get runny, and yeah the cheddar helps a lot.

  8. User avatar Emily Saunders says:

    3 stars
Not sure about using both mayonnaise and ketchup—kinda messy and sweet. Would probably replace one of them with mustard next time.

    1. User avatar alverta.walter says:

      5 stars
Totally get what you mean—mayo + ketchup can go a bit sweet. I’ve done it both ways and honestly using mustard (or just mayo without ketchup) makes it cleaner and less messy.

  9. User avatar rich.landlord says:

    2 stars
Ok, but seriously, it was just a chicken breast in a bun. Not impressed. 😒

  10. 3 stars
This is basically a chicken sandwich, not really a burger lol. But the flavor was solid. Would make again.

    1. 5 stars
Haha fair point—chicken burger/big sandwich vibes! Glad the flavor held up though. Definitely sounds like one I’d repeat too.

  11. 2 stars
I don’t know, seems a bit basic to me. Where’s the spice? Also, who leaves out garlic?

  12. User avatar chong.prosacco says:

    5 stars
Delicious! The cheese really makes a difference! 🍔😍

  13. User avatar norman.rath says:

I accidentally put mustard instead of mayo. Worst day ever. But the chicken was still good.

  14. User avatar Hotblack Desiato says:

    5 stars
Yummy! Chicken, bun, cheese – can’t go wrong. 😋

  15. 4 stars
I tried this and my lettuce was kinda wilty after assembling
I should’ve kept everything separate. Tasty though. Would recommend.

  16. User avatar troy.doyle0 says:

I love burgers but I’m skeptical about adding both ketchup and mayo. It ended up okay, just a little sweet for my taste. Next time I’ll do mayo only or less ketchup.

    1. User avatar jed.ortiz39 says:

      5 stars
Totally get the skepticism—ketchup + mayo can get sweet fast. I’ve done it both ways and mayo only (or half ketchup) is way better for me too. Nice idea for next time!

  17. User avatar trenton.wolff says:

    One bun, one chicken breast
i think the measurements are off. Like, who eats one burger and calls it a meal? 😅 But flavor is okay.

  18. 3 stars
It was pretty good but my chicken was so dry. Maybe I cooked it too long?

  19. User avatar anya.feest42 says:

    4 stars
Tried it and it was bland at first—then I remembered to actually season the chicken properly. After that, it was actually really good.

  20. 2 stars
I don’t know why it’s called a burger when it’s chicken. Should be called chicken sandwich?

  21. User avatar Yuk Hermann says:

    3 stars
Just ok. What’s wrong with the condiment order? I put ketchup on top? Idk.

I don’t know about grilling… can I just pan fry the chicken? What do you think?

  30. 5 stars
Yum! I grilled the chicken just like you said, came out perfect. 10/10 would make again!

    1. User avatar curt.nicolas42 says:

      2 stars
10/10 is a bit much, isn’t it? I think it’s just a chicken burger. How’s it different from any other?

    2. User avatar lesa.lehner59 says:

      4 stars
Glad to hear that! I love grilled chicken, it always makes the burger taste fresh. Did you add any spices?

  31. User avatar Sabre Cat says:

    2. User avatar mammoth says:

      2 stars
I dunno, grilling chicken is tricky. What if it gets dry? Maybe stick to takeout instead. Just sayin’.

  32. User avatar denice.auer79 says:

    3 stars
I’m not convinced about using both ketchup and mayo. Sounds like it could be messy. Also 6-7 minutes per side felt a bit fast for my chicken (thicker breast).

  33. User avatar prairie dog says:

    5 stars
YUM! My family loved it! Will make again for sure!!

  34. User avatar mathWizard says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but the ingredient list feels a bit sparse. I added pickles and a little garlic powder and it leveled up a lot.

    1. User avatar raleigh.hayes41 says:

      5 stars
Yeah I get what you mean—this one is pretty barebones. Pickles + a little garlic powder sounds like exactly the kind of punch it needs. I’ll try that next time!

  35. User avatar berry.connelly52 says:

    5 stars
This was so easy to make! My kids loved it.

  36. User avatar lamar.dubuque5 says:

    1. User avatar caitlyn.robel74 says:

I totally agree! This burger sounds mouth-watering. I’m definitely gonna try it this weekend!

    2. User avatar debi.smitham70 says:

      3 stars
Looks good, but I might add some spicy sauce. Isn’t chicken supposed to be cooked until 165°F?

  38. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

    5 stars
This is exactly the kind of simple, no-fuss chicken burger I like. The mayo+ketchup combo is such a comfort move, and grilling the bun really makes it feel “restaurant.”

  39. 2 stars
The ketchup/mayo spread tastes weird together to me. Like
too tangy? Next time I’ll do mayo only.

    1. User avatar Goku Black says:

      5 stars
Totally get what you mean—ketchup + mayo can turn super tangy fast. Mayo-only (or even a mayo + a tiny splash of ketchup) usually tastes smoother. Great call for next time!

  40. User avatar lorrine.raynor32 says:

    5 stars
Cheddar on top of grilled chicken? Yesss. My only tweak: I added a tiny splash of hot sauce to the ketchup mix. Next level.

  41. User avatar Effrafax of Wug says:

    2 stars
Thought it was boring. Kinda bland if you ask me.

    1. User avatar perla.stiedemann17 says:

      4 stars
I thought it was really good! Maybe you just need to spice it up a bit? Add some hot sauce or pickles!

  42. 2 stars
Too many ingredients for a burger?? Just give me meat and bread ffs.

  43. 1 star
Cooking chicken is hard! I burned mine. 😟

  44. User avatar shera.heathcote75 says:

    1 star
This is just a chicken sandwich, not a recipe! 😏

  45. User avatar halflife4 says:

    2 stars
Why do people like chicken burgers? Beef is way better. But this recipe was okay.

  46. User avatar huey.vonrueden1971 says:

    5 stars
Yum!! I followed the recipe, and the cheddar melted perfectly on the hot chicken. My kids asked for seconds, so that’s basically science.

  47. User avatar grover.farrell69 says:

    3 stars
Too simple for my taste, but I guess it’s good for beginners?

  48. User avatar Walter Bartoletti says:

Chicken not done properly, was pink inside, I’m scared now. đŸ˜±

  49. User avatar mitchel.lemke says:

    3 stars
I tried this and it was kinda bland. Needs more seasoning or maybe some herbs?

  50. 4 stars
Ok but why “1 slice onion” like
thin slice? Thick slice? 😅 I ended up layering it and it was strong. Still tasted good once I balanced with lettuce.

  51. User avatar Kid Trunks says:

    3 stars
I think the idea is great, but chicken can be dry sometimes. Maybe add some spices?

  52. 5 stars
This chicken burger recipe is so simple and delicious! I added some avocado and it was a hit!

  53. User avatar reid.cormier13 says:

    4 stars
Yummmm! Fancier than fast food! đŸ”đŸ”„

  54. User avatar reuben.gleichner says:

    3 stars
Why grill when you can fry? It’s quicker! Also, left out the onion, too strong. đŸ„Ž

  55. User avatar sydney.breitenberg says:

    3 stars
This is kinda bland without extra seasoning. I added smoked paprika and it was way better. Don’t skip the salt!

    1. User avatar debi.hansen1954 says:

      3 stars
Hmm I followed it exactly and it tasted fine to me? Maybe my mayo/ketchup were saltier. I used regular paprika, not smoked, but didn’t feel bland.

    2. User avatar shawanna.monahan2002 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—mine felt super plain until I added smoked paprika too. Also I’ll be honest, I definitely underestimated the salt the first time. 😅

  56. User avatar jazmin.funk1995 says:

    4 stars
Perfect meal for lunch! My kids loved it, especially with the ketchup. 👍

  57. User avatar Renekton says:

    2 stars
Just okay. Nothing special, I think I’ll stick to takeout.

  58. User avatar marva.lynch2 says:

    5 stars
Super straightforward and honestly delicious. The combo of ketchup + mayo on the bun is weirdly perfect for a chicken burger. I grilled mine a touch longer and it came out juicy.

  59. User avatar Falmer Archer says:

    3 stars
Kinda bland for my taste, needed some spices!

  60. User avatar ernest.ohara says:

    5 stars
Made this for lunch—family approved. The cheddar melted nicely once I put it right after grilling. Lettuce stayed crisp too, which is hard sometimes.

    1. User avatar lanora.beer says:

      4 stars
Nice—my only question is, did you slice the chicken or use a whole breast? I tried something similar and my cheddar mostly slid off lol. Still, lunch for the family approved is the real test 😅

    2. User avatar franklyn.flatley15 says:

      5 stars
Love this! The “melt it right after grilling” tip is clutch—cheese just behaves better when it’s hot like that. Also, lettuce staying crisp is such a win 👏

  61. User avatar janice.bode29 says:

    4 stars
I made this but my chicken took longer than 6-7 minutes per side. Still came out juicy though. Also, toasting the bun helps a lot.

    1. User avatar julieta.hayes71 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—6-7 min/side can vary a ton with breast thickness and grill temp. Glad yours stayed juicy! Toasting the bun is underrated.

  62. User avatar steve_maga says:

    3 stars
Why only 1 slice of cheddar? I feel like it disappears lol. Also chicken breast can be dry—maybe pound it thinner. Otherwise tastes fine.

  63. User avatar riley.blick2016 says:

    2 stars
I don’t get why you toast the bun on the grill—wouldn’t it dry out? Mine did slightly, but the flavor was still okay.

  64. 5 stars
This looks solid and simple. Grilling the chicken and toasting the bun is a big win—way better than soggy burgers. I’ll add pickles next time.

    1. User avatar Dwarven Centurion says:

      3 stars
Huh, 6-7 min per side sounds kinda long? My chicken always dries out if I do that. Maybe my heat’s lower. Still, this seems tasty and easy though.

    2. User avatar pamila.gleichner says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—grilling the bun makes such a difference. Never going back to soggy 😄. Pickles sound like the perfect upgrade.

  65. User avatar laurence.dibbert99 says:

    5 stars
So simple but honestly looks super tasty. The mayo + ketchup combo is a little different than what I usually do, but I like it!

  66. 2 stars
    Okay but
cheddar slice is too much? Mine kinda slid off and became a mess. Still ate it all lol. 4 stars? maybe 3.

  67. 5 stars
Burgers. Easy. Tasty. 5/5. (no notes)

  68. User avatar ute.konopelski2002 says:

    4 stars
I made it for dinner last night and we all loved it. Gonna try with BBQ sauce next time!

    1. User avatar reinaldo.berge says:

      5 stars
BBQ sauce sounds like a great idea! It’ll add a nice smoky flavor. Glad you enjoyed it!

  69. User avatar rich.landlord says:

    4 stars
Pretty good! I used a cast-iron skillet instead of a grill and it still worked. I’d maybe add pickles next time though—right now it’s a little too fresh/clean.

  70. User avatar domitila.donnelly46 says:

    1 star
Chicken burger? More like chicken disaster. Never again! 😡

  71. User avatar cesar.barrows41 says:

    4 stars
Super simple! Just what I was looking for. Also, you could maybe add avocado!

  72. 5 stars
This burger is sooo good! I love chicken burgers, and this recipe nailed it! 5 stars!

  73. 5 stars
Chicken burger? Yes please. The ingredient list is basic but it’s classic. I like that it doesn’t rely on weird spices.

  74. User avatar alex.heller81 says:

    4 stars
Tasted good, but 6–7 minutes per side might vary a lot depending on thickness. Mine was thinner so I overdid it by like a minute—still tasty though.

  75. User avatar darin.farrell says:

    5 stars
    Yummm! 😋

  76. User avatar joann.champlin says:

    4 stars
I don’t have a grill so I pan-seared the chicken. Still worked, but the bun toasting took way longer. Overall good though—cheese + tomato is always solid.

  77. User avatar jordan.schowalter6 says:

    4 stars
I followed the times, but my chicken took more like 10 minutes per side. Still good, just make sure it’s fully cooked.

    1. User avatar halflife4 says:

      5 stars
Good call—times vary a lot with thickness and grill temp. If it took ~10 min/side, that usually means the breast was thicker or the heat was a bit lower. I’d still recommend checking the internal temp (165°F/74°C) for peace of mind.

  78. 2 stars
Could you just say how thick the chicken breast should be? Mine was super thin and it dried out a bit. Maybe I cooked too long.

  79. 4 stars
Made this for lunch and it turned out juicy. I toasted the bun longer though—personal preference. Would make again.

  80. User avatar les.renner1988 says:

    5 stars
Simple and looks really tasty. The combo of mayo + ketchup is a classic for a reason—will try it with a little extra pepper.

    1. User avatar al.rogahn says:

      5 stars
That sounds spot on—mayo + ketchup really does hit. I’ll probably add a bit more black pepper too, and maybe extra onion for crunch.

  81. User avatar Dr. Roma Johns says:

    3 stars
Not bad but the seasoning step felt too minimal. I added garlic powder and a little paprika and it tasted more “burger-y.” Salt/pepper alone felt kinda plain.

  82. User avatar marcelino.leffler1977 says:

    5 stars
Simple and actually sounds doable on a weeknight. The mayo-ketchup combo is classic—might add a little garlic powder next time for extra punch.

  83. User avatar shannon.hickle90 says:

    4 stars
The instructions are clear, but I think 6-7 minutes per side is a gamble depending on chicken thickness. I ended up using a meat thermometer. Turned out great though.

  84. User avatar Randall Ryan says:

    3 stars
I’m not sure about ketchup + mayo together
I know it’s used, but it tasted a little weird to me. Still, the grilled chicken was good.

  85. User avatar stephane.daniel25 says:

    4 stars
Easy recipe but I forgot the onion. Still yum! 👌

  86. User avatar jason.altenwerth36 says:

    4 stars
I tried this and it came out juicy. 6-7 minutes per side felt about right for my grill. Loved the fresh crunch from the lettuce and tomato.

  87. User avatar shirlee.jones56 says:

    3 stars
This is okay but seems kinda bland. I added garlic powder and a dash of paprika and it was way better. 1 slice of onion feels too little.

  88. User avatar mason.hirthe says:

    4 stars
I made it tonight and it came out pretty good, but my chicken took longer than 6-7 mins per side. Maybe my grill runs cool. Still delicious with the mayo+ketchup combo.

    1. User avatar joe_banana says:

      5 stars
Glad you liked it! And yeah, grills vary a lot—6-7 min per side is more like a guideline. I always check temp (165°F / 74°C) so it doesn’t undercook.

    2. 4 stars
Mine took like 10 mins per side too. I thought it was me, but maybe my grill is weak. The mayo+ketchup is surprisingly good though 😅
