Buttery Dinner Rolls

November 18, 2024

Buttery dinner rolls are the epitome of comfort food, with soft, pillowy interiors and golden, slightly crispy exteriors. These rolls are the perfect accompaniment to any meal, from holiday feasts to casual weeknight dinners, offering a warm and indulgent touch to your table.

The dough is made with a combination of flour, yeast, butter, sugar, and milk, creating a rich and tender base. The yeast gives the rolls a light, airy texture, while the butter adds richness and flavor. After mixing, the dough is kneaded until smooth, then left to rise, allowing the yeast to work its magic and make the dough beautifully soft and fluffy.

Once the dough has risen, it’s divided into small portions and shaped into individual rolls. After a second rise, the rolls are baked until golden brown. During the baking process, the buttery aroma fills the kitchen, teasing your senses and making the anticipation all the sweeter. After baking, the rolls are brushed with more melted butter to enhance their glossy, golden finish and add extra richness.

These buttery dinner rolls are melt-in-your-mouth soft, with a slight crispiness on the outside and a tender, moist interior. They are perfect for sopping up gravy, dipping into sauces, or enjoying on their own with a pat of butter or jam.

They pair wonderfully with a variety of main dishes, including roasted meats, soups, and salads. For a holiday spread, they are often served alongside turkey, ham, or beef, adding a comforting touch to every bite.

For drinks, pair them with a glass of white wine like Chardonnay, or opt for a warm beverage like herbal tea or hot apple cider for a cozy feel.

Buttery dinner rolls are a must-try for any bread lover and will quickly become a favorite at your dinner table, offering both comfort and indulgence in every bite.

These rolls were delicious! So buttery and soft, I’ll definitely make them again!

  2. User avatar Shaddam Corrino IV says:

I’m not a baker usually, but these was easy. Kinda fiddly, but worth it.

  3. User avatar guillermo.sanford77 says:

I messed up and forgot to cover with a damp cloth—dough skin happened and the rise was meh. Still edible though, and the butter brushing helped. Learn from me!

    1. User avatar Majora's Mask (Boss) says:

      5 stars
Ugh, dough skin is the worst 😭—but honestly “still edible” is a win. Thanks for the real-life lesson about keeping it covered!

  4. User avatar jesus.daniel72 says:

    2 stars
Is it just me or do these taste kinda weird? Not how I remember rolls tasting.

  5. User avatar Flame Atronach says:

    3 stars
These are okay, but mine didn’t really brown much even at 18 minutes. Also I think my milk was warmer than 110F? Not sure. Flavor was buttery though.

  6. User avatar Cammar Pilru says:

    2 stars
They say you can replace butter with oil, anyone tried that? Just asking, don’t wanna ruin it.

  7. User avatar alix.homenick71 says:

    3 stars
Okay, so I messed up the yeast part and they didn’t rise right. Still tasted good, but not the same. Anyone else had this happen?

    1. User avatar leo.fisher2021 says:

      4 stars
I totally feel you! Yeast can be tricky sometimes. At least they still tasted good! Next time, maybe try checking the water temperature more closely? Good luck!

  8. User avatar federico.wilderman says:

    3 stars
Just okay. They tasted buttery but lacked some flavor, maybe add more sugar next time?

  9. User avatar Emily Saunders says:

    4 stars
My dough didn’t double after 1 hour. I waited another 45 minutes and they finally puffed up. The finished rolls were worth the patience.

    1. User avatar shandra.rowe86 says:

      5 stars
That happened to me too—usually my kitchen runs a bit cold. Waiting longer is totally fine. Glad they turned out worth it! 🥰

    2. 4 stars
Hmm, if they didn’t double after an hour, maybe the yeast wasn’t active or the water/milk temp was off. Still, 45 extra mins and puffing is a good sign.

  10. User avatar rayford.gislason5 says:

    5 stars
OMG these rolls taste amazing! Just like my grandma used to make. ❤️

  11. User avatar lang.deckow1975 says:

    3 stars
Easy recipe, but my rolls were too dry. Should’ve added more butter maybe.

    1. User avatar yolando.bednar45 says:

      5 stars
I always add more butter too! It makes them so much better and softer. Try it next time! 😊

    2. User avatar quinn.zemlak2002 says:

      3 stars
Not sure if butter is the only problem. Maybe your oven temp was off? Just a thought.

  12. User avatar austin.rolfson73 says:

    5 stars
Went perfect! I added a bit of garlic powder to the mix. Wow, flavor explosion! Highly recommend.

  13. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

    3 stars
Too much sugar for my taste. I prefer savory bread. But I guess that’s just me.

  14. 5 stars
These rolls are sooo good! Fluffy and buttery, just like I love them. My family devoured them in minutes!

  15. User avatar truman.casper6 says:

    4 stars
Made this recipe for a potluck and they were the hit of the night! Thank you!

  16. User avatar damien.mills says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical because it’s not super complicated, but the frothy yeast step actually matters. I used salted butter once (oops) and they were still good. Next time I’ll stick to unsalted.

    1. User avatar rafael.hoppe7 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—people skip the frothy yeast step and then act shocked when it doesn’t rise 😅. Glad your salted-butter batch still worked though!

  17. User avatar man.bahringer38 says:

    2 stars
Why do you need warm water? I’ve always used cold and it was fine. This whole recipe seems too complicated.

  18. User avatar merrill.deckow says:

    4 stars
Really good flavor, but my dough was a bit sticky even after kneading. Maybe my flour measurement was off. Still baked up nicely though.

  19. 2 stars
    Rolls…

  20. User avatar keitha.russel says:

    4 stars
5 stars but also… why 110°F? I don’t own a thermometer, I just do “warm to the touch.” Worked for me, but I’m skeptical it would for everyone.

  21. 1 star
First time making rolls and it was a disaster. They didn’t rise, what did I do wrong? 🤔

  22. User avatar Wellington Yueh says:

    1 star
This recipe is horrible. My rolls turned out flat as pancakes. Not following this again.

    1. User avatar Papahl and family says:

      4 stars
I’m sorry to hear that! Maybe the yeast wasn’t frothy enough? I had that problem once too.

  23. User avatar ricardo.rowe says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but mine didn’t get as fluffy as the pictures. I think I might’ve added too much flour while kneading. Still tasty with the butter brush at the end.

  24. User avatar Isadore Bell says:

    5 stars
These rolls were a hit at dinner! So fluffy and buttery. Will definitely make again!

    1. User avatar tod.lakin5 says:

      3 stars
But are they really that good? I find rolls can be hit or miss.

    2. User avatar jefferson.wyman93 says:

      5 stars
So glad you loved them! Fluffy is the key! 😊

  25. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    2 stars
Do i really need to wait an hour for it to rise? Ain’t nobody got time for that!

  26. 5 stars
I love making these! They remind me of my grandma’s kitchen. So comforting.

  27. 2 stars
Eh, just average rolls. I think store-bought taste the same honestly.

    1. User avatar Loonquawl and Phouchg says:

      4 stars
Maybe you just need to try a different recipe? These are pretty popular for a reason!

  28. User avatar pasquale.dickinson53 says:

    5 stars
These turned out super soft and golden! The butter brushing at the end made the tops kind of addictive. Followed the rise times and it worked great.

  29. User avatar ai.walter says:

    3 stars
I think 110°F is too hot for my kitchen—my yeast got kinda weird and the first rise was weak. Once I warmed the milk/water less, it was fine.

  30. User avatar Derick Grimes says:

    4 stars
I was skeptical but these rolls are actually pretty easy to make. Will definitely bake again!

    1. User avatar kenneth.flatley says:

      5 stars
So glad you tried it! These rolls are to die for! I always have them with dinner now.

  31. User avatar ramiro.jacobi27 says:

    4 stars
Good recipe, but I had to add a bit more flour—the dough felt too sticky at first. Once I adjusted, the rolls browned nicely. Not bad at all!

  32. User avatar joaquin.veum21 says:

    3 stars
I didn’t have milk so I used water and it was okay. Not as good as my mom’s tho, haha!

  33. 5 stars
Made these for dinner last night—so fluffy and buttery! The rise time actually matched my kitchen (about an hour + 30). I brushed a little extra butter on top and they disappeared fast.

  34. User avatar christel.barton says:

    5 stars
These are dangerously good. The smell while baking is like straight up bakery vibes. I wish I had doubled the batch because 12 rolls is not enough for my household.

    1. User avatar sharika.heller27 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—these smell like an actual bakery. I didn’t even get to share; we ate them straight from the pan 😅

  35. User avatar bridgette.beier says:

    5 stars
OMG, these are the best thing ever! I could eat the whole tray myself! 😍

    1. User avatar eleanor.corkery62 says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! These rolls are amazing! I make them for every holiday meal! 😋

    2. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

      3 stars
Are they really that good? I dunno, I’ve tried other recipes that weren’t great… Maybe I’ll give it a shot if I have time.

  36. User avatar natalie.hettinger2014 says:

    5 stars
    5/5. Wow.

    1. User avatar Annamae Swift says:

      3 stars
I tried these and they came out decent, but my yeast didn’t get frothy after 5 min (could’ve been the water temp). Still tasted buttery though!

    2. User avatar scottie.turcotte says:

      5 stars
Right?! The butter brushing at the end makes them so soft and shiny. I’m obsessed 😄

  37. 4 stars
Quick and easy dinner rolls, perfect for my family gatherings. Everyone loved them!!!

    1. User avatar leigha.bayer says:

      5 stars
These rolls are the best! Made them last night, and my kids couldn’t get enough. Thanks for sharing the recipe!

  38. User avatar bettina.white says:

    5 stars
1 hour rise + 30 min second rise was spot on for my kitchen. I brushed with butter right before baking and they browned beautifully. Will repeat.

  39. 4 stars
So buttery! But I think you shouldn’t use this much butter all the time, it ain’t healthy.

    1. User avatar steve_maga says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! Butter is delicious but moderation is key! These rolls look amazing though!

    2. 3 stars
But you need butter to make them good! What’s a roll without butter? It’s fine to indulge sometimes!

  40. 5 stars
Just made these and I’m not even kidding, the house smells amazing! Definitely gonna be a new family favorite.

  41. User avatar Quickbeam says:

    4 stars
Kinda messy when dividing the dough… but they look nice now! I’ll keep trying.

  42. User avatar rhinoceros says:

These rolls are amazing! So fluffy and buttery, they’re a hit at dinner.

  43. User avatar dominica.wintheiser85 says:

Yum! Just yum! I didn’t have enough butter, but still turned out great! 👍

  44. User avatar kimiko.stracke85 says:

    5 stars
Made these tonight and they turned out super soft—like, pull-apart cloud vibes. Followed the timing and the buttery top was perfect.

  45. User avatar dusti.nicolas52 says:

    5 stars
These came out super soft and buttery—like dinner-roll perfection. I did have to watch the milk/ water temps because mine runs a bit hot, but once I got it right the rise was great. Definitely making again!

  46. User avatar rob.predovic says:

    5 stars
These came out super soft and golden! The butter brushing makes them taste like bakery rolls. I’ll definitely make these again for dinner.

  47. User avatar wilford.bernhard35 says:

    2 stars
Waaay too buttery… like almost cake-bread? My family liked it but I’m not sure it’s my thing. Maybe cut butter next time.

  48. 5 stars
Made these last night—super soft and buttery. I proofed the yeast a little longer since my kitchen runs cold, but everything turned out great. 12 rolls fit my pan perfectly.

    1. User avatar Lucienne Kshlerin says:

      5 stars
Yesss—mine always come out dense if I don’t give the yeast enough time, so I love that you adjusted for the cold kitchen. Sounds perfect with a 12-roll fit!

  49. User avatar theo.wiegand says:

    5 stars
These rolls turned out amazing!! So buttery and fluffy, just like my grandma used to make. Thank you!

  50. User avatar lemuel.ebert99 says:

    3 stars
Mine stuck to the pan even though I greased it. Maybe I didn’t brush enough butter? The tops were gorgeous but I mangled a couple getting them out 😅

  51. 2 stars
I followed this recipe exactly and mine didn’t rise at all. What did I do wrong???

  52. User avatar Pete Moss says:

    3 stars
Really, you guys put a whole cup of sugar in bread? Who needs that much sweet? Seems off.

  53. User avatar andres.mills1980 says:

    5 stars
    Yay!

  54. User avatar Super Saiyan Blue Goku says:

These rolls are the best! So fluffy and buttery, they disappeared in minutes. Will make again!

  55. User avatar angela.greenholt2002 says:

The ingredients are straightforward, but I think “4 cups flour” might depend on humidity. I had to add a little extra flour to get it elastic. Otherwise great flavor.

    1. User avatar louis.watsica49 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—flour absorbs differently depending on humidity and even how it’s packed. I usually start with 3 3/4 cups and add from there.

  56. 2 stars
I followed the recipe but my rolls didn’t rise at all. Maybe my yeast was old? So disappointed.

  57. User avatar katherina.beer2005 says:

    4 stars
I used milk instead of water for the yeast and they turned out great! Who knew it could make a difference?

    1. User avatar adrian.volkman1987 says:

      5 stars
Using milk instead of water? That’s genius! I’ll have to try that next time. Thanks for sharing!

  58. User avatar damien.prosacco says:

    4 stars
Honestly, I thought dinner rolls would be harder. Kneading made me tired but the instructions were clear. Next time I’ll shape them tighter so they rise more evenly.

  59. User avatar celena.towne92 says:

    4 stars
I followed the recipe pretty closely, but my dough was a little sticky after kneading. I added a touch more flour and they still turned out good and soft. Would make again.

  60. User avatar norris.quigley1952 says:

    2 stars
I tried these but they turned out hard like rocks. What did I do wrong? I followed the recipe.

  61. User avatar shira.hettinger says:

    4 stars
Making these for the first time. Fingers crossed they work out!

  62. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

    2 stars
Just ok… Not the best rolls I’ve ever made. I think I’ll stick with my old recipe.

  63. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    4 stars
These smell amazing while baking. I used salted butter instead of unsalted and they were still tasty, maybe just slightly more savory than expected.

  64. 5 stars
Made these last night—so fluffy! The yeast froth timing is spot on, and brushing with butter after baking takes them over the top. 5/5 for dinner-roll vibes.

    1. User avatar twanna.kautzer says:

      3 stars
I tried it but my yeast never got frothy—maybe my water was too hot? The flavor was still good, but they didn’t rise like yours. Any tips?

    2. User avatar clementina.adams91 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! Mine came out super fluffy too. I also noticed the butter brushing at the end is the magic step. Definitely making these again.

  65. 2 stars
Is it supposed to be 12 rolls with 4 cups flour? I got way more than 12 when I split the dough. End result tasted good anyway.

  66. User avatar Oolon Colluphid says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly and mine didn’t really rise the second time. Maybe my kitchen was too cold? Still tasted good though, just flatter than expected.

  67. User avatar geoWizard says:

    5 stars
These turned out super fluffy—like actual bakery rolls. I used a slightly warmer milk and butter still melted fine. The brushing with butter at the end is absolutely the move.

  68. User avatar olin.dicki1968 says:

    5 stars
These rolls turned out amazing! So soft and buttery. My family devoured them!

    1. User avatar basementDweller says:

      2 stars
I’m not sure about these rolls. I tried making them, but they didn’t turn out so great. Maybe I messed up the yeast?

    2. User avatar Sherwood Feeney says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome to hear! They are so good, right? Good job!

  69. User avatar luther.casper85 says:

    4 stars
Honestly I’m not sure about the yeast instructions. 1 packet = 2 1/4 teaspoons right? Mine was a little confusing but I waited for frothy bubbles like it said and it worked.

  70. 3 stars
I don’t get why people rave about these. Just bread, right? Meh.

    1. 5 stars
They’re not just bread! These rolls are soft and buttery, perfect with any meal. Give them a try!

  71. User avatar lane.weber35 says:

    4 stars
Pretty solid recipe. I liked that it’s straightforward and yields 12 nice-sized rolls. Mine took closer to 20 minutes to fully brown, but the crumb was still tender.

  72. User avatar luz.balistreri14 says:

    1 star
I’m skeptical. 4 cups flour feels like a lot for only 1 egg. Mine never got smooth, it was more like sticky playdough, lol.

  73. User avatar rachal.gleichner38 says:

    1 star
Me no like. Too much butter? Not my thing.

  74. User avatar tova.abshire says:

    3 stars
Not bad but 375°F feels too low? Also 2 1/4 tsp yeast is a lot for such a small batch… they didn’t taste as “buttery” as I wanted.

  75. 3 stars
1 hour rise + 30 min rise = way too optimistic lol. Mine took closer to 2 hours because the kitchen was cold. Eventually they came out fine, just plan ahead.

  76. User avatar arline.okuneva78 says:

    4 stars
I was a bit skeptical at first, but these actually came out really good. I might add more sugar next time tho.

  77. 5 stars
Quick and easy! The kids helped and they loved it! 🙂

    1. User avatar Pizpot Gargravarr says:

      5 stars
That sounds so fun! Baking with kids is the best! 😊

  78. 4 stars
Pretty good, but my dough felt a little sticky after adding all the flour. I had to add a tiny bit more flour while kneading. Still tasty though, would make again.

  79. User avatar Adolph Weber PhD says:

    3 stars
Too much sugar for my taste, next time I’ll cut it down. Still edible tho.

  80. 4 stars
5 minutes frothy yeast is lieeess 😅 mine took like 15 minutes. Turned out okay though—just had to be patient. The butter brushing part is mandatory.
