Apple Salad with Candied Walnuts and Cranberries

November 26, 2025

Apple salad with candied walnuts and cranberries is a fresh, colorful dish that brings together crisp texture and bright flavors in every bite. It starts with juicy apples, usually a mix of sweet and tart varieties, sliced thin to keep the salad light and refreshing. Their crunch sets the tone for everything else, creating a base that feels clean and vibrant. Dried cranberries add a touch of sweetness and a gentle chewiness that balances the freshness of the apples, while also bringing a pop of ruby color that makes the salad look festive and inviting.

The candied walnuts are the element that elevates this simple mix into something special. Lightly toasted and coated in caramelized sugar, they add a sweet nutty crunch that contrasts beautifully with the softness of the fruit. Their glossy finish and deep roasted flavor bring richness without making the salad heavy. Together, these ingredients form a perfect balance of sweet, tart, crisp, and crunchy, giving the dish a satisfying complexity.

A light dressing ties everything together, usually something creamy or gently tangy. Honey yogurt dressing, lemon vinaigrette, or a touch of apple cider vinegar all work well, depending on the mood you want for the salad. The dressing should enhance the flavors without weighing them down. Even a simple drizzle of olive oil with a squeeze of lemon can be enough to bring the salad together in a bright, clean way.

You can keep the dish simple or make it more substantial. Add mixed greens for freshness, crumbled feta or goat cheese for creaminess, or thinly sliced celery for extra crunch. Each version remains lively, refreshing, and perfect as a side dish for fall meals or holiday gatherings.

This apple salad works well next to grilled chicken, turkey, pork chops, or even a warm bowl of autumn soup. It also holds its own as a light lunch, especially when served with a slice of crusty bread. No matter how you enjoy it, the combination of apples, candied walnuts, and cranberries delivers a lovely mix of flavors that feels seasonal, bright, and completely satisfying.

Isn’t there too much sugar in this? I mean even the walnuts need sugar?? Not sure if I’ll be trying this.

  8. User avatar jackeline.bradtke18 says:

Wasn’t a fan of the feta. Felt like it just didn’t belong here.

I thought the sugar would be too much with the apples, but it balanced out nicely!

    1. User avatar contessa.runolfsson says:

      5 stars
Glad to hear that! The sweetness from the sugar really does complement the tartness of the apples perfectly. Can’t wait to try it!

    2. 3 stars
I dunno, sounds like too much sugar to me. I like my salad without it. But if it worked for you, that’s great I guess!

  10. 2 stars
Honestly, not that great. Just tastes like a regular salad…

    1. 3 stars
Regular salad? Nah, you must’ve missed the point! This salad is fancy! But hey, everyone has their tastes, I guess.

Sounds good, but don’t you think the candied walnuts are a bit too sweet? I prefer my salads more savory.

  13. User avatar rodolfo.schulist78 says:

Too much sugar on the walnuts, they tasted like candy not salad! More greens needed.

    1. 4 stars
I think the sweetness is fine! It balances the tartness of the apples and cranberries. But yeah, maybe a bit more greens would be good.

  14. 4 stars
My kids didn’t like the walnuts. But I loved it! 😃

  15. 3 stars

  29. 5 stars
This is the best salad I’ve ever had, hands down.

    1. User avatar terry.hirthe says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! The combination of sweet and savory in this salad is just amazing. I can’t believe how easy it is to make too!

Best salad? Really? I mean, it sounds good, but best ever? That’s a bit much, don’t ya think? I’ll stick to my Caesar.

I don’t know about this one. Mixing fruit with greens? Seems odd to me. Did not try it.

  31. User avatar bobby.wisoky says:

    2 stars
Too many cranberries! It totally overpowered the apples.

    1. User avatar dina.lynch58 says:

      4 stars
I actually love cranberries! Maybe just use less next time?

  32. 1 star
Shouldn’t you cook the apples too? Raw apples aren’t good for salad, right?

    1. User avatar gianna.swift71 says:

      4 stars
I actually think raw apples add a nice crunch and flavor to the salad. Cooking them might make them mushy. Just my opinion!

    2. User avatar ArabianNights says:

      2 stars
Who eats raw apples in salad? Sounds weird to me. But, hey, if people like it, who cares?

  33. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

    5 stars
This salad is super delicious! The candied walnuts were the best part!

  34. 4 stars
I used walnuts but forgot cranberries, still yum! Also I think i used too much vinegar?

  35. 4 stars
Wow, the candied walnuts are a game changer! I could just eat those alone! I’ll definitely make this again.

  36. User avatar jesse.gaylord41 says:

    4 stars
Made this for a picnic, and everyone loved it! Just right for summer!

  37. User avatar carrol.mclaughlin35 says:

Good salad, but tastes better with ranch! It’s always better with ranch lol.

    1. 3 stars
I dunno, ranch might mask all the nice flavors of the apples and cranberries. But hey, if you like it, go for it! Different strokes for different folks, right?

    2. User avatar vonnie.buckridge31 says:

      5 stars
Lol, ranch on everything! I’m gonna try it with this salad next time, sounds interesting! Thanks for the tip!

  38. User avatar leida.kassulke says:

    5 stars
Delicious! Added some cinnamon to the dressing for extra flavor.

  39. User avatar teodoro.bins says:

    2 stars
It looks fancy, but it’s just a salad?? What’s the hype?

    1. User avatar wellRespected says:

      4 stars
It’s more than just a salad! The candied walnuts and cranberries give it a sweet twist. Plus, the cheese adds some depth. Totally worth the hype!

    2. User avatar Pasta Fasta says:

      2 stars
Why put so much effort into a salad? It’s just leaves and fruits. I can grab a bag of pre-made salad from the store for way less effort.

  40. 3 stars
Are walnuts necessary? Can’t I use peanuts instead? 🤔

  41. 5 stars
This salad is a game changer! The candied walnuts are the best part.

  42. 2 stars
Feta cheese?? No, no, no. Should’ve been bleu cheese instead!

  43. 2 stars
This sounds fancy but too many steps for me. I’ll stick to plain lettuce.

  44. User avatar aurelio.spencer57 says:

    4 stars
Got everything but feta. Guess I’ll just live without it. 😂
