Amish white bread is a soft, tender, and comforting classic that represents the beauty of simple home baking. Known for its fluffy texture, lightly sweet flavor, and golden crust, this bread has earned its place as a favorite in kitchens around the world. It is the kind of loaf that feels nostalgic, reliable, and always welcoming on the table.
What makes Amish white bread so special is its balance. It is slightly sweet without being sugary, rich without feeling heavy, and soft enough to melt in your mouth. The dough is usually made with basic pantry ingredients such as flour, yeast, milk, butter, sugar, and a touch of salt. Together, they create a loaf that rises beautifully and bakes into a tender, airy crumb.
This bread is incredibly versatile. It is perfect for sandwiches, whether filled with savory deli meats, fresh vegetables, or creamy spreads. It also makes wonderful toast, developing a gentle crisp on the outside while staying soft inside. Spread with butter, honey, or homemade peach jam, it becomes a simple pleasure that never gets old.
Amish white bread is also ideal for French toast, bread pudding, or grilled cheese sandwiches. Its soft structure absorbs flavors well, making it a favorite base for both sweet and savory recipes. Many home bakers love it because it stays fresh longer than store bought bread and can easily be sliced and frozen for later use.
Beyond its practical uses, this bread carries a sense of tradition and care. It reflects the Amish approach to baking, where patience, quality ingredients, and simple methods create something truly satisfying. The process of kneading the dough, watching it rise, and smelling it bake in the oven feels calming and rewarding.
There is something deeply comforting about slicing into a warm loaf of Amish white bread. The steam, the soft crumb, and the gentle aroma instantly make any kitchen feel like home. It is not just bread, it is a reminder that the simplest recipes often bring the greatest joy.
Amish white bread is proof that you do not need complicated techniques or rare ingredients to create something wonderful. With its soft texture, gentle sweetness, and timeless appeal, it remains a beloved classic that never goes out of style.

Ingredients
- 2 cups warm water about 110 degrees F
- 2/3 cup white sugar can reduce to 1/3 cup if preferred
- 1 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast ensure it’s fresh
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 6 cups bread flour can use all-purpose if desired
Instructions
- In a large bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water, and then stir in yeast. Allow to proof until yeast resembles a creamy foam, about 5 to 10 minutes.
- Mix salt and oil into the yeast mixture. Stir in flour one cup at a time.
- Knead dough on a lightly floured surface until smooth. Place in a well-oiled bowl, and turn dough to coat. Cover with a damp cloth. Allow to rise until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour.
- Punch dough down. Knead for a few minutes, and divide dough in half. Shape into loaves, and place into two greased 9×5 inch loaf pans. Allow to rise for 30 minutes, or until dough has risen 1 inch above pans.
- Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 30 minutes.

Dough didn’t rise and I followed instructions. Not sure what went wrong.
Ugh, I hate when that happens! I always double-check my yeast before I start.
Maybe your yeast was old? It needs to be really fresh to work. I had the same problem once!
I used all-purpose flour and it still turned out perfect! So good!
Ugh, what is with all the sugar? Can we not just have bread without all this sweetness?
Whatever, bread needs flavor! If you don’t like it, just use less sugar like the recipe says!
I get your point, but sugar does help with the texture and flavor in breads. You can always reduce it if you want less sweet!
This bread is amazing! So fluffy and sweet. Definitely a keeper!
I totally agree! This recipe is fantastic! I added some honey and it turned out even better!
I’ve never baked bread before. This was easier than I thought! Yum!
I love bread. Bread is life. This one is now my favorite.
Tried it once, but mine turned out super dense. Maybe I messed up the yeast.
I love this recipe! Made it twice and my family can’t get enough. Thanks!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! It’s a family favorite for sure. 😊
Twice? Really? I tried it once and it came out like a brick. Maybe I messed up the yeast or something.
Quick and easy! My kids loved helping knead the dough.
Quick and easy? I dunno, sounds like a lot of steps. How long really does it take to make?
That’s awesome! Baking with kids is such a fun way to bond. The dough is so soft and easy to work with!
I had a hard time getting the yeast to proof. Was it supposed to be foamy? I might have messed up.
Easy recipe but bread was too salty for my taste. Gonna cut back next time.
Hmmm.. it’s bread but not like from the store. More like…personal bread? I’ll keep trying.
Yummy! Will make again for sure. 🍞
This recipe really works! I’m no baker but even I managed it, and it was delicious!
This bread is amazing! So soft and fluffy. My family loved it!
Best bread recipe I’ve tried and I’ve tried a lot!! Def doing this again.
I’m so glad you loved it! It’s my go-to recipe too. Have you tried adding herbs or cheese to it? Totally takes it to another level!
Best recipe ever! My kids loved it, and I feel like a super mom!
Bread is life! 😍 Just made this and it’s a game changer!
Totally agree! This bread is awesome! I can’t stop eating it! 🍞
Sounds good, but I don’t think bread can be life. It’s just flour and water, right? 🤔
I tried this recipe but mine turned out super dense. What did I do wrong?
Followed the recipe but my bread came out hard as a rock. What did I do wrong?
This bread is amazing! So soft and fluffy, just like my grandma used to make.
I totally agree! This bread recipe brings back so many memories. I’m gonna make it this weekend!
I followed the recipe, but my dough didn’t rise. What did I do wrong? 🤨
Yeast is like a living thing! I just added too much flour I think. Didn’t rise well…
Yeah, yeast can be tricky! Maybe next time try less flour or give it more time to rise. It’ll turn out better! 😊
I think the yeast expired. The bread turned out like a rock. 😩
Amazing! Smelled so good while baking. My kids loved it and I think it was even better the next day.
Is it really necessary to let it rise for so long? I’m kinda impatient.
Too much sugar for me. Can I just leave it out completely?
Amish white bread? Sounds kinda fancy for just bread… LOL. But it is tasty!
Eh, it was alright. I prefer the kind from the store. It’s just bread, right?
Easy to follow instructions! I added some herbs and it was delish.
I dunno, it seems like too much bread for me. I might just buy store bread next time.
Glad to hear! Herbs really make a difference. What kind did you add?
Not great, was too sweet for my taste. Can’t we just make bread without sugar?
This bread turned out amazing! Just like my grandma used to make. I’ll definitely be making this again!
I don’t understand how this is Amish bread. Isn’t it just regular white bread?
Too much sugar for my taste. I adjusted it to 1/3 cup but still a bit sweet. Next time, I will try less.
bread
I skipped the salt and it was super bland. Lesson learned.
That’s a bummer! Salt really does make a difference. Maybe next time, try adding a pinch or two!
Who needs salt anyway? Just add some butter after baking, it’ll be fine! 😄
Baking bread is easy as pie, right? No…oh wait, it’s not! Too many steps for me, I scrambled the method.
Great recipe! I used whole wheat flour and omitted oil. Turned out good enough, still edible.
Too much sugar! Reduced to 1/3 cup and it was a bit better. Still sweet tho.
I totally get that! I reduced the sugar too and it didn’t taste bad at all! Next time I’ll try even less.
Amazing bread! Had it fresh with butter. Yum!
