5-Minute Caprese Grilled Cheese

November 1, 2024

The 5-Minute Caprese Grilled Cheese is a delicious twist on the classic grilled cheese sandwich, offering all the rich, gooey comfort of the original, but with a burst of fresh flavors from a Caprese salad. This sandwich is quick to make and perfect for when you’re craving something simple yet special, with just a few ingredients that elevate the flavor.

The key to this sandwich is the combination of fresh mozzarella, juicy tomatoes, and fragrant basil—ingredients that are typically found in a Caprese salad. When layered inside two slices of perfectly toasted bread, they create a savory, slightly tangy filling that melts together beautifully with a touch of butter and golden-brown crispy bread.

To prepare, spread butter on the outside of two slices of your favorite bread -sourdough or whole wheat works beautifully. Layer fresh mozzarella slices, tomato slices, and basil leaves on the inside of the bread, then season with a little salt and pepper to enhance the flavors. Grill the sandwich on medium heat for just a few minutes, flipping until both sides are golden and crispy, and the cheese is perfectly melted.

The result is a perfect marriage of textures – the crunch of the toasted bread, the gooey melted mozzarella, and the freshness of the tomatoes and basil. A drizzle of balsamic glaze over the top adds a touch of sweetness and acidity, balancing out the richness of the cheese and butter.

This 5-Minute Caprese Grilled Cheese is an ideal meal for a quick lunch, a light dinner, or even as a side to a bowl of soup. It’s fast, simple, and full of fresh, bold flavors. Whether you’re in a rush or just craving something comforting, this Caprese grilled cheese is a go-to choice that delivers satisfying results every time.

It took longer than 5 minutes for me…maybe my stove is slower? Still good tho.

  8. 4 stars
Just 5 minutes? I took more time and it still worked. Grilled cheese is easy, right?

    1. 4 stars
I guess everyone’s timing can be a little different! As long as it turned out good, that’s what matters. 😊

  9. User avatar Gag Halfrunt says:

I added some avacado and it was nice. Better than just cheese. Use butter on both sides!

  10. User avatar yesenia.denesik86 says:

    3 stars
I used cheddar instead of mozzarella because that’s what I had. It was okay but not like this recipe.

  11. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    5 stars
This is the BEST grilled cheese I’ve ever made! So easy and so quick. I added some pesto too, yum!

Such a quick meal! I was starving and had this done in no time. Thanks!

  13. User avatar nicole.wilderman78 says:

I didn’t have fresh basil, so I used dried. Still good, just not as bright. Will try with real basil next time.

  14. User avatar arnoldo.ankunding2006 says:

    4 stars
My kid wouldn’t eat it, too ‘green’. Guess kids don’t like basil. But I loved it.

    1. User avatar Leto Atreides says:

      2 stars
Ain’t no way my kids would eat that! What’s the point of green stuff anyway? 🤷‍♂️

    2. 4 stars
Maybe try leaving out the basil next time? Kids can be picky. But glad you enjoyed it!

  15. User avatar percy.roob94 says:

    3 stars
It was ok, but my cheese didn’t melt very well. Maybe I needed to cook it longer?

  16. User avatar lazaro.stroman says:

    1 star
I think I did something wrong… the bread burned before the cheese melted!

    1. 3 stars
Burned bread? Yikes! That’s a big oof. 😂 You gotta watch it closely, especially if you’re new to grilled cheese!

    2. 4 stars
Maybe your heat was too high? I usually start on medium-low to get it just right. Don’t give up!

  17. User avatar ferdinand.welch79 says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, the 5-minute claim feels optimistic 😅 I needed more like 8 minutes, but it still turned out great.

  18. User avatar billy.gaylord17 says:

It seemed too simple, but surprisingly tasty! I was skeptical at first. Will make again.

Why is it called grilled cheese if it doesn’t have cheese? 🤔

  20. User avatar kristopher.kessler48 says:

    4 stars
I dunno how u grill cheese in 5 min, took me like 10. But still tasty.

    1. 4 stars
Maybe your stove is slower? I always take a bit longer too! But it still sounds delicious! 🍽️

    2. 3 stars
Nah man, 5 mins is way too quick for melty cheese. U gotta let it take its time! 😂

  21. 4 stars
I made this but forgot the basil, tasted fine though. Still good.

  22. User avatar katherin.veum9 says:

    5 stars
Balsamic glaze is a game changer! Never thought it would taste this good with grilled cheese.

  24. User avatar Gurney Halleck says:

      I don’t know, wasn’t that too simple? I mean, it’s just a grilled cheese. 🤔

    2. User avatar adolph.bailey85 says:

Glad you loved it! It’s super easy to make, right? 😊

  25. User avatar tommye.klein30 says:

I don’t get why everyone loves Caprese. Tomatoes are gross. But the cheese part? That’s okay I guess.

  26. User avatar flor.bahringer says:

    4 stars
5 min? More like 10 in my kitchen! 😂 But it was worth the fuss.

  27. 2 stars
Are you serious? Caprese grilled cheese? Seems like a weird combo to me. I don’t know, might skip this.

    1. User avatar lou.orn45 says:

      5 stars
I get where you’re coming from, but trust me, it’s actually delicious! The flavors mix so well. Give it a try before skipping! 😊

    1. User avatar sharice.stiedemann says:

      5 stars
I can’t believe how quickly this comes together! Grilled cheese is a classic, but adding basil and balsamic makes it feel fancy. Yum!

  29. User avatar lucie.tromp82 says:

    5 stars
Mmm, this was so good! Just make sure the bread is thick enough, or it’ll get soggy.

  30. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

    3 stars
Quick and easy! My kids loved it, but they said too much basil. 😒

    1. User avatar Arthur Dent says:

      4 stars
I thought the basil was just right! Maybe try using less next time? Kids can be picky!

  31. User avatar teisha.rogahn says:

    1 star
Um, what’s the point of basil? This recipe didn’t need it. Ruined my sandwich. 😩

    1. 4 stars
I think basil adds a fresh taste! But I get it, not everyone likes it. Try without next time!

    2. User avatar Galaxia Woonbeam says:

      5 stars
Nah, you’ll be surprised how basil makes it better! 😋 Give it another shot and you might like it!

  32. User avatar lynell.corwin10 says:

    5 stars
5 stars! I used white bread and it still came out great! Who needs sourdough?

  33. 4 stars
Easy to follow! I omitted the basil since I didn’t have any, but it was still great!

    1. 3 stars
No basil? Sounds kinda boring! I love basil in mine. Did you at least add some other spice?

    2. 5 stars
I’m glad to hear you enjoyed it! Basil is good but not a must for grilled cheese. Happy cooking!

  34. User avatar joey.schinner78 says:

    2 stars
Not impressed. The combo is weird and the bread got soggy. I like my grilled cheese classic.

  35. User avatar nichole.stokes45 says:

    1 star
Why put glaze on it? Yall crazy with that fancy stuff. Just eat!

    1. 2 stars
Glaze? Sounds unnecessary! Just give me the grilled cheese and I’m good. No need for all that extra stuff.

    2. 4 stars
I totally get what you mean! But that glaze adds a nice touch, ya know? Sometimes fancy is just fun!

  36. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

    5 stars
I tried making this for my husband and he said it was delish. Good job!

    1. User avatar virgil.keeling says:

My husband wouldn’t like it, he hates tomatoes. 😒 But good for you!

    2. User avatar danica.powlowski1983 says:

That’s awesome to hear! This recipe is so easy and quick, I love it. ❤️

  37. User avatar dedra.zieme32 says:

    2 stars
Really? Just 5 minutes? It took me forever to make. The cheese just wouldn’t melt right.

  38. 5 stars
This was super easy and so good! I added some avocados too. Yum!

  39. User avatar nicolette.ondricka47 says:

    4 stars
I skipped the balsamic glaze and honestly I liked it that way—still super flavorful from the tomatoes and basil. Next time I’ll try it though.

  40. User avatar ernie.ledner1980 says:

    5 stars
Never thought of putting basil in a grilled cheese! My new favorite.

  41. User avatar Chef Bear says:

    1 star
This recipe is a bit too easy. Can we have something harder next time? 👎

    1. User avatar ArabianNights says:

      4 stars
It’s called a 5-minute recipe for a reason! Sometimes easy is what we need! 😊

  42. User avatar ouida.fritsch says:

    5 stars
This was so yummy! The mozzarella melted perfectly. Will definitely make again!

    1. 5 stars
Glad you enjoyed it! It’s super easy and quick to make.

  43. 4 stars
I love caprese salad, but grilled cheese? Hmm… didn’t think it would work, but it does! 😂

    1. User avatar cole.oconner1959 says:

      4 stars
Sounds interesting! I always thought grilled cheese was just for the classic style. Might try this! 😊

  44. User avatar Humma Kavula says:

    2 stars
This recipe sounds fancy but I ain’t got all dem ingredients. Just bread and butter is good enough. 🤷‍♂️

  45. User avatar geoWizard says:

    2 stars
I thought this would be easier. Bread was burnt and cheese didn’t melt enough. Not happy.

  46. User avatar terica.schuppe49 says:

    5 stars
Yummy!! My kids loved it and even my hubby who usually dislikes tomatoes. 🤩

  47. User avatar Ra'zhinda says:

    1 star
Why would you put basil in a grilled cheese? That’s just wrong.

  48. User avatar Questular Rontok says:

    4 stars
Super simple and looks fancy. I used regular mozzarella (not fresh thick slices) and it worked anyway.

  49. User avatar freeman.herman23 says:

    5 stars
5 stars! I make it every week now, so delicious.

  50. 2 stars
Where’s the garlic??? I thought it would be more flavorful. Disappointing!

    1. User avatar halflife4 says:

      4 stars
Garlic would have been great, but this is a classic Caprese, not all recipes need garlic! Give it another chance, maybe it’ll grow on you.

  51. User avatar boyd.borer5 says:

    3 stars
I mean, it’s just a cheese sandwich right? Not really impressed. Also, where’s the garlic? 😒

  52. 2 stars
I dunno, this seems kinda boring. Just cheese and tomatoes? Where’s the pizzazz?

    1. User avatar leonardo.oberbrunner43 says:

      4 stars
I think it’s a classic for a reason! Sometimes simple is best. You can always add more stuff if you want!

  53. User avatar ramiro.swift0 says:

    4 stars
This is just a fancy sandwich! But it do look yummy.

    1. User avatar milford.jones84 says:

      5 stars
It’s not just a sandwich, it’s a fancy sandwich! I love Caprese flavors. This looks delicious!

    2. User avatar leonie.goyette47 says:

      3 stars
Yeah, but calling it fancy seems a bit much. It’s just cheese and bread, right? Still, I’d eat it!

  54. 2 stars
Honestly I tried it exactly but my cheese didn’t melt. Bread got brown and I had cold cheese in the middle… maybe it was low-moisture mozzarella?

  55. User avatar mia.bruen14 says:

    3 stars
Easy recipe but tastes a bit bland. Needs salt or something.

  56. 4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about tomatoes inside—felt like they’d get soggy. But it was fine! I just patted the tomato slices dry.

  57. User avatar justin.dach52 says:

    5 stars
Made it for lunch and it came out super good. I used regular bread and it still grilled nicely. Next time I’ll try thicker tomato slices because mine slipped a bit.

    1. User avatar harlan.hodkiewicz39 says:

      5 stars
Love that it worked with regular bread! Thicker tomato slices makes sense—less slipping and more melty vibes. I might try that next time.

  58. 4 stars
Really tasty, but my cheese took a bit longer to melt than 3 minutes on each side. Maybe my skillet runs cold. Still worth it.

  59. User avatar jenelle.volkman1957 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good. Mozzarella melted nicely, but I think my skillet was too hot because the bread browned before the cheese fully went gooey. Next time I’ll lower the heat.

  60. 3 stars
Is balsamic glaze really needed? I don’t see the point… but whatever.

    1. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

      4 stars
Balsamic glaze adds a nice sweetness and balance to the savory flavors. You might change your mind when you try it!

  61. User avatar emeline.paucek94 says:

    2 stars
Grilled cheese is not even Italian. Caprese made it bad.

  62. 5 stars
Sourdough wasn’t at my store so I used white bread and it still tasted awesome!!!

  63. User avatar nelle.kulas46 says:

    4 stars
Didn’t have fresh mozzarella, used shredded. Not the same but still tasted alright. Just saying!

  64. User avatar kyra.lang57 says:

    3 stars
I didn’t have balsamic glaze and used ketchup instead. Still turned out decent, but hoping to try it the right way next time. 🤷‍♂️

    1. User avatar Gurney Halleck says:

      2 stars
I don’t think ketchup is a good idea! Balsamic is what makes it a Caprese. Might as well call it a ‘fast food cheese sandwich’ now. 😆

    2. User avatar elliot.mueller says:

      4 stars
Ketchup?! That’s a wild swap! 😂 But hey, if it worked for you, who am I to judge? Just make sure to get that balsamic next time. Trust me, it makes a difference!

  65. User avatar clarita.bartoletti says:

    4 stars
I used pesto instead of basil because that’s what I had. Idk if that counts but it was still amazing. Will make again with fresh basil when I’m out shopping.

  66. User avatar virgil.fritsch says:

    5 stars
    Grilled cheese for life! 🔥🔥🔥

  67. 2 stars
Not as good as my mom’s, but I’ll give it a try again maybe.

    1. User avatar aubrey.turcotte1980 says:

      4 stars
You should definitely give it another shot! Maybe try adding some garlic or seasoning to make it pop, like my grandma used to do.

  68. User avatar roy.beer92 says:

    5 stars
Quick and easy! Perfect for my lunch break. Thanks for sharing! 🌟

    1. User avatar shirlee.schimmel43 says:

    2. User avatar broderick.rolfson59 says:

This sounds delicious! I love a good sandwich that’s quick to make. Can’t wait to try it out! 😋

  69. User avatar azzie.friesen says:

It was ok but I think I prefer regular grilled cheese with cheddar. Just a personal choice.

  70. User avatar lizzzard says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, I burnt mine, but it was still yum. 😂

  71. 4 stars
I followed it exactly but my mozzarella didn’t melt as much as I wanted. Maybe my skillet was too cool? Still tasted great though.

  72. User avatar breann.howe1990 says:

    3 stars
Too much cheese for my taste, but my kids loved it. They devoured it in minutes.

  73. 4 stars
Took me longer than 5 minutes, but I’m slow in the kitchen. Still loved it!

    1. 3 stars
5 minutes? Yeah right! Took me 10 but still worth it. 😅

      4 stars
Cooking takes practice! Glad you enjoyed it in the end. 😊

  74. User avatar cedric.larkin56 says:

Yum! The basil really adds a nice flavor. I used regular bread and it was still good.

    1. User avatar Gaius Helen Mohiam says:

      3 stars
Regular bread? Are you sure that works? I mean isn’t sourdough like, owesome for this? Just curious.

    2. 5 stars
I totally agree! Basil makes everything better. I can’t wait to try this with my homemade bread next time!

  75. User avatar lin.hyatt1958 says:

    3 stars
Meh. Too tomato-y for my taste and the basil got a little bitter after cooking. Would try again with less tomato.

  76. User avatar Ramon Ruecker says:

    4 stars
Sourdough?? How about plain white bread? Only thing I had and still turned out ok.

  77. 3 stars
My mozzarella was kinda watery and my sandwich got messy 😅 Still good, but I had to blot the tomato slices first next time. Great concept though.

  78. User avatar herbert.ferry says:

    2 stars
Balsamic glaze??? Nah, that’s just fancy ketchup. Just stick with the cheese and bread.

  79. User avatar Charles Darwin says:

    3 stars
I don’t usually do balsamic glaze, so I skipped it. Still delicious, but it was more ‘cheese sandwich’ than ‘Caprese’.

  80. User avatar hollis.spinka says:

    5 stars
This is so simple and delicious! I made it for lunch today and it was a hit. Definitely making again.

    1. User avatar Piter De Vries says:

      3 stars
Sounds great but can u really make it in just 5 mins? I always take longer.

    2. User avatar minh.padberg2008 says:

      5 stars
I’m so glad you liked it! It’s one of my go-to recipes for a quick meal.

  81. User avatar maia.white29 says:

    4 stars
I’m skeptical about balsamic glaze. It’s sweet, so I thought it would ruin it—but nope, actually works.

  82. User avatar luci.parisian says:

    5 stars
The balsamic glaze is non-negotiable in my kitchen. It makes it taste like Caprese salad but warm and melty. 10/10 for a quick comfort food.

    1. 5 stars
Yes! That balsamic drizzle is the whole vibe—makes it sweet-tangy and way more like Caprese. I do it every time too 😄

    2. User avatar breanne.stokes1 says:

      3 stars
I’m not sure about the balsamic glaze being “non-negotiable”… I tried it once and it felt kinda too sweet for me. Maybe 1 tsp instead of 1 tbsp? Still a solid grilled cheese though.

  83. User avatar candis.reynolds6 says:

    4 stars
Yum! The balsamic glaze gives it a nice touch. Can’t wait to try this at a picnic!

    1. 2 stars
I dunno, balsamic glaze? Is it really necessary? Just seems like extra work to me.

    2. User avatar dedra.altenwerth says:

      5 stars
This sounds great for summer! What a easy recipe. I’m gonna make it for my next BBQ!

  84. User avatar samara.armstrong says:

    3 stars
I used regular mozzarella and it didn’t stretch as nicely as I expected. Flavor was still okay though, especially with the tomato.

  85. User avatar ALTplusF4 says:

    5 stars
So good omg. Will def make again. A+.

    1. User avatar armand.padberg82 says:

      5 stars
Right?! That melty mozzarella + tomato is unreal. I’m making this again tonight 😄

  86. User avatar domenic.hudson23 says:

    5 stars
Made this for lunch and wow—so crispy outside and melty in the middle. The balsamic drizzle is a must.

    1. User avatar Lovetta Schmidt says:

      5 stars
Omg yes—this is exactly how grilled cheese should be. I did the balsamic last and it totally upped the flavor.

  87. User avatar Dwarven Shpere says:

Didn’t have mozzarella so I used cheddar. It was good but not the same lol. Still tasty tho!

Delish! I added some garlic powder to the butter. Made it even better!

I don’t have balsamix glaze, can I use ketchup instead? Asking for a friend.

Not bad but my kids hardly touched it. They like plain cheese only.

Made this for lunch and it was gone in minutes 😅 The mozzarella melted perfectly and the balsamic drizzle really ties it together.

I followed it exactly but my bread browned too fast and the cheese wasn’t fully melted. I think medium-low would be safer. Maybe adjust times based on your pan.

This is dangerously fast. The mozzarella gets melty in no time and the tomato-basil combo tastes like a fancy cafe—without the effort. I drizzled balsamic and it really elevated it.

Yum! I added a sprinkle of salt and it elevated the flavors! Highly recommend!

Umm, isn’t this just a fancy way to say grilled cheese? 🤔

Five minutes my butt 😅 It took longer for me, but I don’t mind. End result was really good—next time I’ll use thinner tomato slices.

Haha same here 😅 Mine took more like 10 minutes, but the cheese was perfect. Thinner tomato slices next time is such a good call—those thick ones add too much moisture.

Five minutes? Nah. I tried this and my bread burned before the cheese melted. Also I used mozzarella slices and it was kinda watery… maybe my tomatoes were too ripe? Still tasted okay though.

Meh. I thought it would be more flavorful. The mozzarella overpowered the tomato for me, maybe I needed more basil.

Caprese? More like capri-no! Not my favorite combo. Tomato and cheese just don’t mesh well, imo.

I get that it’s not for everyone, but have you tried adding a little pesto? It really enhances the flavors! 🧄🌿

Caprese is delicious! You might just not be a cheese person. Give it another shot! 😋

Easy? I don’t think so. I always burn my grilled cheese. Maybe I need more practice.

Pretty tasty, but my bread got golden before the cheese fully melted. I should’ve lowered the heat and cooked longer, I think.
