Few things capture the heart of Mexican comfort food like a freshly made torta de jamón. This humble ham sandwich, typically served on a crusty telera or bolillo roll, is a nostalgic favorite for many who grew up enjoying it in lunchboxes, at markets, or as a quick after-school snack.
While its ingredients are simple, the torta de jamón delivers big on flavor and texture. The bread is slightly crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, providing the perfect base for layers of savory goodness. Traditional versions begin with a generous slather of mayonnaise, followed by thinly sliced ham. From there, the sandwich becomes a canvas for personal taste.
Classic toppings include lettuce, tomato, avocado, sliced onion, and pickled jalapeños for a bit of kick. Some variations add a smear of refried beans, while others include a slice of cheese or even a fried egg for extra richness. A dash of hot sauce or a squeeze of lime often brings everything together with a bright, tangy finish.
The beauty of this sandwich lies in its versatility. It’s quick to prepare and adaptable to whatever you have on hand, which makes it a go-to option for busy weekdays or impromptu meals. Despite its simplicity, a well-made torta de jamón can be deeply satisfying.
In many parts of Mexico, you’ll find tortas sold at street stalls or casual eateries, often wrapped in paper and served warm. They’re perfect for grabbing on the go, yet comforting enough to enjoy at the table with a cold drink or a side of chips.
Whether you’re discovering it for the first time or revisiting a childhood favorite, the torta de jamón is a reminder that the best meals are often the simplest. It’s a sandwich with soul, layered with flavor, and made with love.

5/5! My grandma used to make this back in the day. Brings back memories!
I loved my grandma’s cooking too! This recipe definitely sounds similar. Can’t wait to try it out! 😍
No sé si fue mi horno, pero a 180°C tardó casi 60 minutos. Se veía dorada antes, pero por dentro todavía estaba blanda. Aun así rica y fácil, solo paciencia.
I don’t like ham but I tried it. Swapped it for turkey and it worked too!
This recipe is just like my grandma’s! Brings back memories! ❤️
That’s so sweet! I love recipes that remind us of our loved ones. Can’t wait to try this! ❤️
This Torta de Jamón is AMAZING! I made it for brunch and everyone loved it. Will definitely make again.
So good!
I am not sure why you put milk in eggs, seemed weird. Didn’t turn out right for me.
This torta is absolutely delicious! My family devoured it in minutes!
Looks good but I kinda doubt my kids would eat it. They can be picky.
I’m so glad to hear that! It’s one of my family favorites too.
I’m not a big fan of ham. Can I use bacon instead?
This was easy peasy! I didn’t have onions so I used chives instead.
Yumm!!! 😍😋 Best thing I’ve made all week.
I didn’t have all the ingredients, so I used bacon instead. Still came out amazing! Yum!
Not sure about mixing flour directly with eggs—mine turned lumpy for a moment. I whisked harder and it was fine after. Taste was good, just stressful at the start 😅
I’ve had that exact lumpy moment before too—eggs + flour can totally do that if you don’t whisk aggressively at first. Your fix sounds right. Next time I’d try whisking the dry stuff into the wet a little more gradually, but yeah… stressful only for a minute 😅
Hmmm, I think I’d rather whisk the flour into the milk first, not straight into the eggs. Otherwise it clumps like scrambled eggs with flour lol. But if it tasted good, maybe mine is just overthinking it.
I made it for a brunch and it was a hit! Everyone was asking for the recipe. Thanks! 🌟
So glad it was a hit! This recipe is definitely a crowd pleaser. 😋
Such a simple recipe. My kids loved it! Thanks for sharing!
Isn’t this just a fancy omelette? Not sure why it needs so many ingredients.
I was a bit hesitant to try this because I’ve never had jamón before, but WOW! It turned out great. Will definitely make again!
Pretty solid recipe, though my batter felt a bit thick before baking. I added a splash more milk and that helped a lot. Otherwise flavors were good—ham + garlic is a winner.
Yum! I just love cheese and ham together! My kids gobbled it up.
eh, too eggy for me. I know it’s called torta but like… needs more seasoning. still, i ate it all 😅
I was skeptical at first, but it turned out better than I thought. Will make again!
I used turkey ham instead and it was still good, but I think I missed out on the flavor.
Not bad, but I think it could use some more spices or something. Just a bit bland for me.
Why put eggs in a Torta? Sounds wrong. I stick to the traditional recipe. 🤷♂️
I don’t like onions. Can I leave them out? Or will it ruin the whole thing?
Very easy recipe! My kids loved it. I added some veggies too, like spinach. Gonna try with turkey ham next time.
Sounds good, but I think turkey ham might change the flavor too much. Ham is ham, right? But I guess veggies are cool if you like them. 🤷♂️
That’s great to hear! Adding veggies sounds like a tasty twist. My kids also enjoy it with extra ingredients. Definitely gonna try the turkey ham next time too!
Made this last night and it turned out super comforting. The garlic-onion base smells amazing, and the cheese on top gets perfectly melty. I baked mine closer to 45 minutes for a darker golden crust.
I followed it mostly, but I used smoked ham and it got kinda salty. Next time I’ll go lighter on the salt step. Still tasty and the texture was like a savory custard.
Ugh yeah smoked ham + “salt to taste” is a trap 😅 Glad it was still tasty though—savory custard texture sounds spot on. Next time you could skip some of the salt in step 3 since the ham is already salty.
This was super easy to make! My kids loved it. Will def make it again! 😍
Pretty simple and budget-friendly. I used leftover deli ham and whatever cheese I had. Worked great, and the whole kitchen smelled amazing while it baked.
This is not a torta! A torta is sweet, this is just a ham pie.
Very nice recipe! Only thing: my batter looked too runny before baking, but it set up after 45 minutes anyway. Maybe my onion was extra juicy.
Why do u use so many eggs? I think it’s too much.
Made this tonight—super tasty and the texture was perfect. The cheesy top browned nicely. Will definitely repeat.
So glad it worked out for you! 😄 I love when the cheesy top browns like that. Do you bake it in the same dish every time or try different ones?
Looks good on paper, but I think 1 cup flour is too much? Mine felt kinda dense. Maybe I packed the flour too tight. Anyone else notice that?
So good! I swapped the ham for turkey bacon, and it was bomb!!
Followed the steps exactly, and it came out delicious. Next time I might sauté the onion a touch longer for deeper flavor. Cooling for a few minutes helped it set.
This looks like a fritatta! What’s the difference tho? Either way, I’m excited to make it! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I’m skeptical about mixing flour directly—kinda worried it’d be heavy. Surprisingly, it didn’t—came out fluffy enough.
Just OK. I expected more flavor. Next time maybe I’ll add more spices or something.
