Sweet Potato Casserole with Pecan Streusel

April 3, 2025

Sweet Potato Casserole with Pecan Streusel is a beloved dish that graces many holiday tables, especially during Thanksgiving and Christmas. Creamy, smooth mashed sweet potatoes form the base, lightly sweetened and spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla. On top, a golden-brown streusel made from butter, brown sugar, and chopped pecans adds a delightful crunch and a nutty, caramelized flavor that contrasts beautifully with the soft interior.

This casserole is more than just a side dish – it often feels like dessert disguised as dinner. The natural sweetness of the sweet potatoes is enhanced by a touch of sugar and warm spices, while the pecan topping provides texture and richness. Some versions include a splash of orange juice or zest for brightness, or a bit of bourbon for depth and complexity. Whether baked in a deep dish or spread into a shallow pan for extra topping, this dish brings warmth and comfort in every bite.

Its roots in Southern cooking give it a nostalgic charm, and its versatility allows it to shine alongside roasted turkey, glazed ham, or even as part of a vegetarian spread. While some families prefer marshmallows on top, the pecan streusel offers a more grown-up and flavor-forward alternative that appeals to a wider range of palates.

Sweet Potato Casserole also holds up well when made ahead, making it ideal for busy holiday meal prep. Reheated, it tastes just as good, if not better, the next day. Leftovers can be served with breakfast or as a sweet side for lunch, and they’re even tasty straight from the fridge.

From its smooth, spiced filling to the buttery, crisp topping, Sweet Potato Casserole with Pecan Streusel is a dish that balances decadence with wholesomeness. It’s a time-honored favorite that invites second helpings and brings a sense of home and celebration to the table.

I don’t know about this recipe… Sweet potatoes and sugar? Seems kinda odd to me. I might stick with normal potatoes for my casseroles.

This recipe is amazing! The pecan topping really adds a nice crunch to the dish. I made it for Thanksgiving and everyone loved it!

  3. User avatar Sand-Dial says:

This casserole was everything I hoped for! The sweetness was spot on and the pecans added a nice crunch. Highly recommend!

I’m glad you enjoyed it! I’m thinking of trying this recipe for Thanksgiving. Do you think it would work with walnuts instead of pecans?

    2. User avatar yoshiko.crooks2 says:

      3 stars
Sounds good but why’s everyone raving about pecans? They’re just nuts, right? Can you really taste the difference?

  4. 3 stars
I found it too sweet! I think I might reduce the sugar next time. Also, I used walnuts instead of pecans because that’s what I had.

    1. User avatar Draugr Thrall says:

      4 stars
I guess it really depends on personal taste! I like it a bit sweeter myself, but walnuts are a great swap! Hope it turns out good next time!

  5. User avatar tana.gleichner says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but the texture was kinda gummy? Maybe I mashed too aggressively or didn’t drain long enough after boiling. Flavor was great, just needs tweaking.

  6. User avatar claud.boehm1956 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but mine came out a bit too sweet. Next time I’ll cut the granulated sugar in half or reduce the brown sugar in the streusel. Still worth making though.

  7. 4 stars
Y’all, this is like a sweet potato pie without the crust! Love the nuts on top! 😍

    1. 5 stars
I totally agree! The pecans really do add that nice crunch! This dish is so good, I can’t stop eating it! 😋

    2. User avatar tai.schmitt31 says:

Sweet potato pie without crust? Sounds off to me. Why not just make pie then? Guess people got different taste…

  8. User avatar Frostbite Spider says:

Super yummy! My kids devoured it, even the picky eaters! Thanks for sharing!

    1. User avatar kirby.bogisich58 says:

      2 stars
I tried this and my kids just picked the pecans off! Not a fan of sweet potatoes. Maybe less sugar next time?

    2. 5 stars
So glad to hear your kids loved it! It’s always a win when picky eaters enjoy something healthy! 😊

  9. User avatar Fenchurch says:

Made this for Thanksgiving last year—so cozy and the streusel is legit. I swapped in maple syrup for some of the sugar and it still worked great.

    1. User avatar ruthe.stehr77 says:

      5 stars
That sounds perfect for Thanksgiving—so glad the maple swap worked! 🍁 I love that you still kept the streusel flavor. Did you notice it getting a bit darker/fudgier on top?

  10. User avatar sterling.skiles says:

    3 stars
Was okay, but my topping didn’t get golden brown. What did I do wrong? 🙁

  11. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    2 stars
I’m not sure about using sweet potatoes…they taste funny to me. Should I try it?

  12. User avatar florine.dach says:

    3 stars
Not sure about the 1/3 cup flour in the streusel—mine seemed dry, like sand. Still tasty though, just more crumbly than I expected.

    1. User avatar laurence.hickle91 says:

      5 stars
That makes sense—1/3 cup flour can definitely make streusel feel a bit dry/sandy depending on how soft your butter is and how chopped the pecans are. I’ve had it happen when the butter isn’t quite creamy. Next time you could try adding a spoon or two more butter (or even a tiny splash of milk) to get it to clump better.

  13. User avatar elaine.crist says:

    3 stars
I thought it was too sweet for my taste. Maybe cut down on sugar next time?

  14. User avatar blair.streich1957 says:

    2 stars
Meh, not what I expected. The texture was off. Should I have used less milk?

This recipe is fantastic! My family loved it, especially the pecan topping. Definitely a keeper.

  17. User avatar Thalassa says:

Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about mixing milk + melted butter into mashed sweet potatoes. But it came out creamy, not greasy.

  18. User avatar gino.beatty67 says:

    5 stars
This casserole is a game changer! The pecan topping adds such a nice crunch. My family loved it.

    1. 2 stars
Is it really that great? Sounds a little too sweet for my taste.

    2. User avatar imelda.gleichner26 says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! The pecan topping really takes it to the next level! 😍

  19. User avatar liberal.hero says:

    1 star
Why use brown sugar when regular sugar is the same? Idk, seems pointless lol.

  20. User avatar Gag Halfrunt says:

    4 stars
The instructions are fine, but “golden brown” took me longer than 35 minutes. I think ovens vary—mine needed almost 45. After that it was great.

  21. User avatar Draugr Wight says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but mine was a little too runny even after baking. I think my sweet potatoes were more watery than usual. Next time I’ll mash a bit longer or drain more.

  22. User avatar my.carroll72 says:

    5 stars
My mom used to make this every holiday! It always brings back memories.💕

  23. User avatar lesley.mitchell says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, 1/2 cup butter + 1/3 cup butter feels like a lot. Still delicious, just super rich. Would cut butter next time.

    1. 3 stars
I don’t think it’s “too much” butter—casserole needs fat for the texture. But 1/3 cup + 1/2 cup is confusing; why not just say 5/6 cup total? Also I’m pretty sure you bake it longer than 30-35 min for sweet potatoes to set.

    2. User avatar Spriggan Matron says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—between the melted butter in the filling (1/2 cup) and the streusel (1/3 cup) it’s definitely a butter bomb 😅 Still sounds amazing though. I’d probably keep it but reduce a bit next time like you said.

  24. User avatar Mario Gerhold says:

    4 stars
This was pretty good but I mixed up the eggs and flour ratio. Oops!

  25. 4 stars
2 large eggs seems like a lot? I worried it would turn into like custard, but it actually held together well. Next time I might try one egg just to test.

    1. User avatar rosalva.ward says:

      3 stars
Totally disagree on reducing eggs. Sweet potato casseroles need that binding or the texture gets watery. But testing with 1 egg next time could be fine if you watch it closely.

    2. 4 stars
Yeah I used to think 2 eggs was a lot too, but honestly sweet potato is pretty forgiving. Glad yours held together—custard worry is totally real though.

  26. User avatar jerome.mcclure says:

    3 stars
Mine turned out kind of dense in the middle—still tasty though. I think I mashed the sweet potatoes a bit too roughly and maybe needed a touch more milk.

  27. User avatar rocky.miller72 says:

    4 stars
Nice recipe, but I used coconut oil instead of butter. Still turned out fine.

  28. 3 stars
Honestly, I found it too sweet. Maybe cut down on the sugar next time. 🤔

    1. User avatar jordan.schmitt says:

      4 stars
I agree! It was way too sweet for my taste too. Maybe next time I’ll try half the sugar. 😅

  29. 3 stars
Idk, mine got dry around the edges even though the topping was golden. Maybe my baking dish was too shallow? Still ate it all though.

  30. User avatar kevin.ullrich2 says:

    5 stars
This turned out so comforting! The streusel is sweet and crunchy, and the sweet potatoes stay nice and creamy. I used toasted pecans and it bumped the flavor a lot.

  31. User avatar thaddeus.boehm39 says:

    5 stars
Absolutely delicious! This recipe is a hit at every family gathering. I will make it again for sure!

    1. User avatar luise.cronin says:

      5 stars
I’m glad to hear that! This casserole is such a crowd-pleaser. Have you tried adding marshmallows on top? It’s a game changer!

    2. 2 stars
I dunno about this… sweet potatoes with sugar? Sounds weird to me. My family likes it savory.

  32. User avatar Efren Zemlak says:

    4 stars
I’m not a big sweet casserole person, but this one surprised me. The streusel is the star—crunchy and buttery. Would make again for sure.

  33. User avatar elenor.schmidt2024 says:

    5 stars
I’m skeptical of casseroles with lots of sugar, but wow. This was surprisingly balanced once baked. The golden topping helped a lot.

  34. 3 stars
I didn’t have pecans, so I used walnuts. Wasn’t as good, but still edible. Next time I’ll follow the recipe properly.

  35. 1 star
Sweet potato casserole is just gross. Don’t understand the hype. 🤷‍♂️

  36. User avatar aaron.doyle says:

    3 stars
I thought this recipe was a bit complicated for a newbie cook like me. Had to look up what ‘medium’ meant in eggs. But it turned out alright.

  37. User avatar chia.krajcik86 says:

    3 stars
The streusel is kinda crumbly—like it doesn’t really “stick” unless you press it down. I added an extra splash of melted butter and it helped.

  38. 5 stars
Made this for Thanksgiving and it was a hit—sweet, cozy, and the pecan topping actually adds texture (not just sweetness). Followed the bake time and it came out perfectly golden.

  39. 5 stars
This is delicious! I made it for Thanksgiving and everyone asked for the recipe. The mashed sweet potatoes set really nicely after baking.

    1. User avatar danae.daniel1981 says:

      5 stars
Thank you! Love hearing the mashed sweet potatoes set up nicely after baking—exactly what I was hoping for. Glad everyone wanted the recipe!

  40. 2 stars
Meh. Too rich for me. :/

  41. User avatar jayson.schaefer says:

    4 stars
Pretty solid comfort food. I did need to bake 10 more minutes to get the center fully set, but the flavor was great and not overly sweet.

  42. 5 stars
This recipe is amazing! We made it for Thanksgiving and everyone went crazy for it! Definitely a keeper! 🍠🥳

  43. User avatar Jessika Mann says:

    5 stars
Made this for Thanksgiving and it was a hit! Way better than those canned ones I used to make.

  44. User avatar zulma.cummerata44 says:

    5 stars
5 stars for the vibe alone. It’s warm, sweet, and the pecans crunch a little. I’ll make it again.

  45. User avatar wellRespected says:

    5 stars
So easy! I mashed the sweet potatoes with a hand masher and it turned out fine. Family asked for seconds lol.

  46. User avatar Magrathean sperm whale says:

    4 stars
I don’t bake much, so I was worried about the streusel. Turns out it’s easy—just mix and sprinkle. I used a little less butter in the streusel, but it still browned nicely.

  47. 5 stars
This is delicious! I subbed walnuts for the pecans and it still worked. The vanilla really helps. Family asked for seconds.

  48. User avatar deandre.ortiz says:

    3 stars
Could be better if the streusel was more evenly distributed. I got random thick clumps and a few bare spots. Still tasted nice!

    1. User avatar winter.weimann30 says:

      4 stars
Totally get that—my first try had the same “clumps vs bare spots” thing. Next time I’m going to crumble the streusel a bit more (mix until it looks like small pebbles) and maybe sprinkle in two layers so it doesn’t all land in one area. Glad it still tasted nice though!

  49. User avatar eusebia.tremblay says:

    5 stars
Made this for Thanksgiving and it disappeared fast. The pecan streusel is such a good touch—super cozy and not too heavy.

  50. User avatar nilsa.frami says:

    4 stars
I replaced pecans with almonds, and it still tastes good. Just an idea for those allergic to nuts.

    1. 5 stars
That’s a great idea! I’m allergic to nuts too, so I’ll definitely try almonds next time.

    2. User avatar Vanna Predovic says:

      2 stars
Almonds? Really? They taste way different than pecans. Hope it doesn’t ruin the recipe.

  51. User avatar ira.leuschke says:

    2 stars
I don’t know, it was just too sweet for my taste. Maybe I added too much sugar? Not for me.

  52. User avatar emerson.herzog81 says:

    2 stars
Need simpler recipes for people like me! Can it be made in the microwave???

    1. User avatar Bilbo Baggins says:

      4 stars
I hear ya! Sometimes these recipes are way too complicated. And microwaving sounds quicker. Could work, right?

  53. User avatar jolynn.schaden1972 says:

    5 stars
Two thumbs up! Actually wait—5 stars. lol. I didn’t even have vanilla so I used almond extract and it was still amazing.

  54. 5 stars
SO good. Sweet potatoes are like nature’s candy! Yum!!

  55. User avatar milissa.dibbert47 says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, 4 cups sweet potatoes is a lot. I ended up with extra filling after greasing my dish. Still good, just portion control next time!

  56. User avatar toya.jaskolski2010 says:

    4 stars
The topping is kinda like a crumbly cookie thing (in a good way). I pressed it down slightly so it didn’t fall off when serving.

    1. User avatar jules.dubuque66 says:

      5 stars
That’s exactly how I like it too—pressed down a bit so it stays crunchy when you scoop it. Did you find it got extra golden in spots?

    2. User avatar basementDweller says:

      3 stars
Huh, I thought it was supposed to be more “saucy” under the topping. Mine kinda fell off though—maybe I didn’t press it enough. Still tasted good!

  57. User avatar arden.farrell1983 says:

    4 stars
Honestly pretty solid. I used a little less sugar (like 1/4 cup) and it still tasted great. Next time I’ll toast the pecans first for more flavor.

  58. 4 stars
I followed the steps and it was easy. Only thing: I think boiling time depends on potato size, so 20 minutes wasn’t quite enough for my cubes. I baked another 5 minutes and it was fine.

    1. User avatar micheal.bauch says:

      4 stars
Hmm 20 minutes seems short to me. My cubes took like forever (maybe I cut them too big). Also I noticed it thickened more after baking—next time I’ll check doneness instead of the timer.

    2. User avatar heidy.kutch says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—sweet potato cube size makes a big difference. I usually just keep boiling until a fork slides in easily. Love that you adjusted with the extra 5 min!

  59. User avatar shelby.crist97 says:

    4 stars
The texture was perfect after mashing. Next time I’ll chop the pecans a bit finer so the topping is less chunky, but flavor is on point.

  60. User avatar Rich Mann says:

    5 stars
This turned out *so* comforting. The pecan streusel is the star—crispy on top but still creamy underneath. I added a pinch of cinnamon too and it tasted like holiday season in a dish.

    1. User avatar walter.halvorson94 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! I love when the streusel stays crunchy on top but the casserole is still creamy underneath. That pinch of cinnamon sounds perfect—definitely trying that next time. Thanks for the holiday-vibes tip!
