Sweet Potato Casserole with Pecan Streusel

April 3, 2025

Sweet Potato Casserole with Pecan Streusel is a beloved dish that graces many holiday tables, especially during Thanksgiving and Christmas. Creamy, smooth mashed sweet potatoes form the base, lightly sweetened and spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla. On top, a golden-brown streusel made from butter, brown sugar, and chopped pecans adds a delightful crunch and a nutty, caramelized flavor that contrasts beautifully with the soft interior.

This casserole is more than just a side dish – it often feels like dessert disguised as dinner. The natural sweetness of the sweet potatoes is enhanced by a touch of sugar and warm spices, while the pecan topping provides texture and richness. Some versions include a splash of orange juice or zest for brightness, or a bit of bourbon for depth and complexity. Whether baked in a deep dish or spread into a shallow pan for extra topping, this dish brings warmth and comfort in every bite.

Its roots in Southern cooking give it a nostalgic charm, and its versatility allows it to shine alongside roasted turkey, glazed ham, or even as part of a vegetarian spread. While some families prefer marshmallows on top, the pecan streusel offers a more grown-up and flavor-forward alternative that appeals to a wider range of palates.

Sweet Potato Casserole also holds up well when made ahead, making it ideal for busy holiday meal prep. Reheated, it tastes just as good, if not better, the next day. Leftovers can be served with breakfast or as a sweet side for lunch, and they’re even tasty straight from the fridge.

From its smooth, spiced filling to the buttery, crisp topping, Sweet Potato Casserole with Pecan Streusel is a dish that balances decadence with wholesomeness. It’s a time-honored favorite that invites second helpings and brings a sense of home and celebration to the table.

I don’t know about this recipe… Sweet potatoes and sugar? Seems kinda odd to me. I might stick with normal potatoes for my casseroles.

This recipe is amazing! The pecan topping really adds a nice crunch to the dish. I made it for Thanksgiving and everyone loved it!

  3. User avatar Sand-Dial says:

This casserole was everything I hoped for! The sweetness was spot on and the pecans added a nice crunch. Highly recommend!

    1. User avatar debra.buckridge4 says:

I’m glad you enjoyed it! I’m thinking of trying this recipe for Thanksgiving. Do you think it would work with walnuts instead of pecans?

    2. User avatar yoshiko.crooks2 says:

      3 stars
Sounds good but why’s everyone raving about pecans? They’re just nuts, right? Can you really taste the difference?

  4. 3 stars
I found it too sweet! I think I might reduce the sugar next time. Also, I used walnuts instead of pecans because that’s what I had.

    1. User avatar Draugr Thrall says:

      4 stars
I guess it really depends on personal taste! I like it a bit sweeter myself, but walnuts are a great swap! Hope it turns out good next time!

  5. 4 stars
Pretty good, but my casserole took longer than 35 minutes. I think my sweet potatoes were bigger cubes. Still super comforting and the pecans give it a nice crunch.

  6. User avatar margy.smitham1981 says:

    5 stars
    Yum! 10/10

    1. 5 stars
Right?! This sounds dangerously good—sweet, creamy, and that pecan streusel on top is the best part. 😋

  7. User avatar tana.gleichner says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but the texture was kinda gummy? Maybe I mashed too aggressively or didn’t drain long enough after boiling. Flavor was great, just needs tweaking.

  8. User avatar claud.boehm1956 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but mine came out a bit too sweet. Next time I’ll cut the granulated sugar in half or reduce the brown sugar in the streusel. Still worth making though.

  9. 4 stars
Y’all, this is like a sweet potato pie without the crust! Love the nuts on top! 😍

    1. 5 stars
I totally agree! The pecans really do add that nice crunch! This dish is so good, I can’t stop eating it! 😋

    2. User avatar tai.schmitt31 says:

      2 stars
Sweet potato pie without crust? Sounds off to me. Why not just make pie then? Guess people got different taste…

  10. User avatar Frostbite Spider says:

    5 stars
Super yummy! My kids devoured it, even the picky eaters! Thanks for sharing!

    1. User avatar kirby.bogisich58 says:

      2 stars
I tried this and my kids just picked the pecans off! Not a fan of sweet potatoes. Maybe less sugar next time?

    2. 5 stars
So glad to hear your kids loved it! It’s always a win when picky eaters enjoy something healthy! 😊

  11. 2 stars
I followed the recipe exactly and it came out bland somehow. Maybe my sweet potatoes weren’t sweet enough? Still edible, just missing the wow factor.

  12. 4 stars
Pretty good, but mine was a little too runny even after baking. Maybe I used slightly bigger sweet potatoes? Still tasty though—pecan topping saves it.

  13. User avatar nicky.friesen69 says:

    5 stars
I added a pinch of cinnamon and it made a huge difference. The topping is legit—like pecan crumble. My family asked if I was going to “bring the casserole again” next time 😂

  14. User avatar Fenchurch says:

    5 stars
Made this for Thanksgiving last year—so cozy and the streusel is legit. I swapped in maple syrup for some of the sugar and it still worked great.

    1. User avatar ruthe.stehr77 says:

      5 stars
That sounds perfect for Thanksgiving—so glad the maple swap worked! 🍁 I love that you still kept the streusel flavor. Did you notice it getting a bit darker/fudgier on top?

  15. User avatar sterling.skiles says:

    3 stars
Was okay, but my topping didn’t get golden brown. What did I do wrong? 🙁

  16. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    2 stars
I’m not sure about using sweet potatoes…they taste funny to me. Should I try it?

  17. User avatar florine.dach says:

    3 stars
Not sure about the 1/3 cup flour in the streusel—mine seemed dry, like sand. Still tasty though, just more crumbly than I expected.

    1. User avatar laurence.hickle91 says:

      5 stars
That makes sense—1/3 cup flour can definitely make streusel feel a bit dry/sandy depending on how soft your butter is and how chopped the pecans are. I’ve had it happen when the butter isn’t quite creamy. Next time you could try adding a spoon or two more butter (or even a tiny splash of milk) to get it to clump better.

  18. User avatar elaine.crist says:

    3 stars
I thought it was too sweet for my taste. Maybe cut down on sugar next time?

  19. User avatar blair.streich1957 says:

    2 stars
Meh, not what I expected. The texture was off. Should I have used less milk?

  20. User avatar Wellington Yueh says:

    5 stars
Sweet potatoes + pecans = my fave! Will make this every Thanksgiving!

  21. User avatar geralyn.prohaska59 says:

    5 stars
This recipe is fantastic! My family loved it, especially the pecan topping. Definitely a keeper.

  22. User avatar Thalassa says:

    5 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about mixing milk + melted butter into mashed sweet potatoes. But it came out creamy, not greasy.

  23. User avatar gino.beatty67 says:

    5 stars
This casserole is a game changer! The pecan topping adds such a nice crunch. My family loved it.

    1. 2 stars
Is it really that great? Sounds a little too sweet for my taste.

    2. User avatar imelda.gleichner26 says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! The pecan topping really takes it to the next level! 😍

  24. User avatar german.lubowitz45 says:

    3 stars
Really tasty but I found it very rich. Maybe use less butter or milk next time—my arteries are protesting 😅

  25. User avatar liberal.hero says:

    1 star
Why use brown sugar when regular sugar is the same? Idk, seems pointless lol.

  26. User avatar Lumberjack says:

    4 stars
My streusel was a mess at first because I forgot to soften the butter. I reheated it for like 10 seconds and it fixed it—so yeah, be careful.

  27. User avatar kate.renner74 says:

    2 stars
Not for me. I love sweet potatoes, but the vanilla + lots of sugar made it taste almost like dessert pudding rather than casserole.

  28. User avatar rufus.pagac64 says:

    2 stars
Could use more salt. Sweet desserts always need a tiny pinch to bring flavor forward. Otherwise it’s kinda flat.

  29. User avatar Gag Halfrunt says:

    4 stars
The instructions are fine, but “golden brown” took me longer than 35 minutes. I think ovens vary—mine needed almost 45. After that it was great.

  30. User avatar Draugr Wight says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but mine was a little too runny even after baking. I think my sweet potatoes were more watery than usual. Next time I’ll mash a bit longer or drain more.

  31. User avatar joe_banana says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but mine came out a little wet in the middle. I think I mashed the potatoes too runny—next time I’ll bake 5 more minutes.

  32. User avatar my.carroll72 says:

    5 stars
My mom used to make this every holiday! It always brings back memories.💕

  33. User avatar Ms. Clarence Leffler says:

    5 stars
Wow, this is comfort food. The sweet potato + pecan combo tastes like it should be in a fancy bakery.

  34. User avatar lesley.mitchell says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, 1/2 cup butter + 1/3 cup butter feels like a lot. Still delicious, just super rich. Would cut butter next time.

    1. 3 stars
I don’t think it’s “too much” butter—casserole needs fat for the texture. But 1/3 cup + 1/2 cup is confusing; why not just say 5/6 cup total? Also I’m pretty sure you bake it longer than 30-35 min for sweet potatoes to set.

    2. User avatar Spriggan Matron says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—between the melted butter in the filling (1/2 cup) and the streusel (1/3 cup) it’s definitely a butter bomb 😅 Still sounds amazing though. I’d probably keep it but reduce a bit next time like you said.

  35. User avatar Mario Gerhold says:

    4 stars
This was pretty good but I mixed up the eggs and flour ratio. Oops!

  36. 4 stars
2 large eggs seems like a lot? I worried it would turn into like custard, but it actually held together well. Next time I might try one egg just to test.

    1. User avatar rosalva.ward says:

      3 stars
Totally disagree on reducing eggs. Sweet potato casseroles need that binding or the texture gets watery. But testing with 1 egg next time could be fine if you watch it closely.

    2. 4 stars
Yeah I used to think 2 eggs was a lot too, but honestly sweet potato is pretty forgiving. Glad yours held together—custard worry is totally real though.

  37. User avatar jerome.mcclure says:

    3 stars
Mine turned out kind of dense in the middle—still tasty though. I think I mashed the sweet potatoes a bit too roughly and maybe needed a touch more milk.

  38. 4 stars
Pretty good! I used canned sweet potatoes (don’t judge) and it still turned out nice. Next time I’ll reduce the sugar a tiny bit though.

    1. User avatar Dr. Christin Schiller says:

      5 stars
Love that you used canned sweet potatoes—no judgment at all! 😄 Reducing the sugar a bit sounds spot on, especially since the streusel has both brown sugar and butter. Did you notice it got sweeter than expected or just want it a little less indulgent?

  39. User avatar Draugr Deathlord says:

    3 stars
I’m not sure about the amount of butter in both the filling and the streusel. It turned out a little greasy for my taste, but the flavor was solid. Might try half next time.

  40. 4 stars
My grandma used to make something similar but she didn’t put flour in the streusel. I tried it anyway—honestly it helped it hold together.

  41. User avatar rocky.miller72 says:

    4 stars
Nice recipe, but I used coconut oil instead of butter. Still turned out fine.

  42. 3 stars
Honestly, I found it too sweet. Maybe cut down on the sugar next time. 🤔

    1. User avatar jordan.schmitt says:

      4 stars
I agree! It was way too sweet for my taste too. Maybe next time I’ll try half the sugar. 😅

  43. 3 stars
Idk, mine got dry around the edges even though the topping was golden. Maybe my baking dish was too shallow? Still ate it all though.

  44. User avatar kevin.ullrich2 says:

    5 stars
This turned out so comforting! The streusel is sweet and crunchy, and the sweet potatoes stay nice and creamy. I used toasted pecans and it bumped the flavor a lot.

  45. User avatar thaddeus.boehm39 says:

    5 stars
Absolutely delicious! This recipe is a hit at every family gathering. I will make it again for sure!

    1. User avatar luise.cronin says:

      5 stars
I’m glad to hear that! This casserole is such a crowd-pleaser. Have you tried adding marshmallows on top? It’s a game changer!

    2. 2 stars
I dunno about this… sweet potatoes with sugar? Sounds weird to me. My family likes it savory.

  46. User avatar Efren Zemlak says:

    4 stars
I’m not a big sweet casserole person, but this one surprised me. The streusel is the star—crunchy and buttery. Would make again for sure.

  47. 5 stars
This was cozy and sweet in the best way. The streusel actually stayed crunchy for me (probably because I chopped the pecans a little smaller). Will make again for the holidays!

    1. User avatar booker.boyle says:

      5 stars
Love that! I always worry the streusel turns soft, so good to hear chopping the pecans smaller helped. Cozy holiday win 🎄

  48. User avatar elenor.schmidt2024 says:

    5 stars
I’m skeptical of casseroles with lots of sugar, but wow. This was surprisingly balanced once baked. The golden topping helped a lot.

  49. 3 stars
I didn’t have pecans, so I used walnuts. Wasn’t as good, but still edible. Next time I’ll follow the recipe properly.

  50. 5 stars
Made this for Thanksgiving and it was a hit. The streusel stayed nice and crunchy, and the center was super creamy. Vanilla + pecans is a great combo!

  51. 1 star
Sweet potato casserole is just gross. Don’t understand the hype. 🤷‍♂️

  52. User avatar jacquelin.carter1965 says:

    4 stars
I followed it pretty closely, but mine took closer to 45 minutes. Still turned out great though. Next time I’ll cover it with foil halfway so it doesn’t brown too early.

  53. User avatar aaron.doyle says:

    3 stars
I thought this recipe was a bit complicated for a newbie cook like me. Had to look up what ‘medium’ meant in eggs. But it turned out alright.

  54. 5 stars
The texture is spot on—like dessert but not overly sweet. I added a pinch of cinnamon in the filling and it elevated everything (highly recommend).

  55. User avatar chia.krajcik86 says:

    3 stars
The streusel is kinda crumbly—like it doesn’t really “stick” unless you press it down. I added an extra splash of melted butter and it helped.

  56. 2 stars
Mine didn’t get golden brown at all… I baked the full time and even added 10 minutes. Not sure if my oven runs cold or if I packed the streusel too tightly.

  57. 5 stars
Made this for Thanksgiving and it was a hit—sweet, cozy, and the pecan topping actually adds texture (not just sweetness). Followed the bake time and it came out perfectly golden.

  58. User avatar hiram.zboncak2 says:

    3 stars
It’s good, but 20 minutes boiling felt too long for my cubes. I’d say check tenderness earlier or you’ll mash forever.

    1. 5 stars
Good point—20 minutes can vary a lot depending on cube size. I usually start checking at ~12–15 min; once a fork slides in easily, drain right away so it doesn’t turn to mush.

    2. User avatar Eddie the Computer says:

      4 stars
Huh, I did 20 min and it was perfect for me? My cubes were pretty small though… maybe yours were bigger. Also I mash with a potato masher, not a blender, so I don’t end up mashing forever 😅

  59. User avatar jarvis.lakin53 says:

    2 stars
Way too much sugar for my taste. I’d cut the granulated sugar in half next time. The sweet potatoes were good, but it got cloying fast.

  60. User avatar Genghis Khan says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, 1/2 cup granulated sugar feels like a lot with sweet potatoes. It’s good, but it leans dessert-y. I’d cut it to 1/4 cup next time.

    1. User avatar micheline.connelly1980 says:

      5 stars
I totally get what you mean—sweet potatoes + that much sugar can tip it into dessert territory. I’ve done 1/4 cup granulated once and it was less “sweet,” still plenty good with the pecan topping.

    2. User avatar Barliman Butterbur says:

      3 stars
Hmm I’d keep it as is. Sweet potato casserole is supposed to be sweet, like Thanksgiving sweet. Also the streusel has brown sugar already, so maybe your bake time was short? If it wasn’t set, it might taste extra sugary.

  61. 5 stars
This is delicious! I made it for Thanksgiving and everyone asked for the recipe. The mashed sweet potatoes set really nicely after baking.

    1. User avatar danae.daniel1981 says:

      5 stars
Thank you! Love hearing the mashed sweet potatoes set up nicely after baking—exactly what I was hoping for. Glad everyone wanted the recipe!

  62. 2 stars
Meh. Too rich for me. :/

  63. User avatar jayson.schaefer says:

    4 stars
Pretty solid comfort food. I did need to bake 10 more minutes to get the center fully set, but the flavor was great and not overly sweet.

  64. 5 stars
This recipe is amazing! We made it for Thanksgiving and everyone went crazy for it! Definitely a keeper! 🍠🥳

  65. User avatar Jessika Mann says:

    5 stars
Made this for Thanksgiving and it was a hit! Way better than those canned ones I used to make.

  66. User avatar yuri.hettinger71 says:

    2 stars
Wait… 4 cups sweet potatoes? I accidentally did 2 and it didn’t set right. The topping was good though, I guess. Next time I’ll measure better.

    1. User avatar Pizpot Gargravarr says:

      5 stars
Yeah, 4 cups is pretty specific—sweet potatoes vary a lot by size, so 2 cups would definitely throw off the custardy base and baking time. Glad the topping still worked though!

    2. User avatar nelia.mosciski says:

      3 stars
Hmm I think 2 cups should still work… maybe you needed to bake longer or add more eggs/milk? Also sweet potatoes are kinda different than yams so that might be it. Next time trust the mash thickness, not cups.

  67. User avatar zulma.cummerata44 says:

    5 stars
5 stars for the vibe alone. It’s warm, sweet, and the pecans crunch a little. I’ll make it again.

  68. User avatar wellRespected says:

    5 stars
So easy! I mashed the sweet potatoes with a hand masher and it turned out fine. Family asked for seconds lol.

  69. User avatar malisa.connelly says:

    3 stars
The streusel is good, but I ran out of pecans halfway through mixing (oops). Still tasted great though, so I guess it’s forgiving.

  70. User avatar Magrathean sperm whale says:

    4 stars
I don’t bake much, so I was worried about the streusel. Turns out it’s easy—just mix and sprinkle. I used a little less butter in the streusel, but it still browned nicely.

  71. User avatar Mr. Prosser says:

    4 stars
Not bad at all. I used slightly less sugar because my sweet potatoes were already pretty sweet, and it still tasted great. The streusel was crumbly in a good way—almost like a dessert.

  72. User avatar cristie.okuneva52 says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but I expected it to be less eggy? Like the center felt a bit custardy, which isn’t necessarily bad, just different. Streusel was perfect.

    1. User avatar Miss Fortune says:

      4 stars
Totally get what you mean—these can land more “custard-y” when the eggs set in the center. Next time I might try reducing the eggs slightly or baking a few minutes longer and letting it firm up more. Glad the streusel hit though—pecans + that brown sugar/flour combo really does shine!

  73. User avatar Spider Guardian says:

    4 stars
The instructions are straightforward, but 350°F seems low for a casserole like this. Mine took closer to 45 minutes to look right.

  74. 5 stars
This is delicious! I subbed walnuts for the pecans and it still worked. The vanilla really helps. Family asked for seconds.

  75. 5 stars
This turned out super cozy and the streusel is legit. I used chopped pecans and it had the perfect sweet crunch. Will make again for Thanksgiving.

  76. User avatar deandre.ortiz says:

    3 stars
Could be better if the streusel was more evenly distributed. I got random thick clumps and a few bare spots. Still tasted nice!

    1. User avatar winter.weimann30 says:

      4 stars
Totally get that—my first try had the same “clumps vs bare spots” thing. Next time I’m going to crumble the streusel a bit more (mix until it looks like small pebbles) and maybe sprinkle in two layers so it doesn’t all land in one area. Glad it still tasted nice though!

  77. User avatar ryan.marvin25 says:

    4 stars
I followed the recipe mostly, but I think 1/2 cup pecans is too little. Next time I’ll double them. The flavor is there, just wants more crunch.

  78. User avatar marget.zulauf8 says:

    3 stars
It’s tasty, but I kinda wish there was more salt or cinnamon. Like it’s missing something. My family kept saying “pretty sweet” lol.

  79. User avatar eusebia.tremblay says:

    5 stars
Made this for Thanksgiving and it disappeared fast. The pecan streusel is such a good touch—super cozy and not too heavy.

  80. User avatar nilsa.frami says:

    4 stars
I replaced pecans with almonds, and it still tastes good. Just an idea for those allergic to nuts.

    1. 5 stars
That’s a great idea! I’m allergic to nuts too, so I’ll definitely try almonds next time.

    2. User avatar Vanna Predovic says:

      2 stars
Almonds? Really? They taste way different than pecans. Hope it doesn’t ruin the recipe.

  81. User avatar ira.leuschke says:

    2 stars
I don’t know, it was just too sweet for my taste. Maybe I added too much sugar? Not for me.

  82. User avatar emerson.herzog81 says:

Need simpler recipes for people like me! Can it be made in the microwave???

    1. User avatar Bilbo Baggins says:

      4 stars
I hear ya! Sometimes these recipes are way too complicated. And microwaving sounds quicker. Could work, right?

Two thumbs up! Actually wait—5 stars. lol. I didn’t even have vanilla so I used almond extract and it was still amazing.

  84. 2 stars
Why are we putting flour in the topping? Wouldn’t cornstarch make more sense? I don’t know, it just didn’t feel right to me, even though it tasted okay.

  85. User avatar mckinley.gerhold10 says:

    5 stars
Pecan topping was the best part. I could eat that by the spoon. Sweet potatoes were creamy and the whole thing smelled like the holidays.

    1. User avatar Dexter Wintheiser says:

      5 stars
Yes!! The pecan topping really steals the show—golden, crunchy, sweet, all the holiday vibes. I agree, it’s basically spoon-dessert 😄

    2. User avatar Eccentrica Gallumbits says:

      3 stars
Mmm sounds good, but I’m not sure about the sweetness level. 1/2 cup white sugar plus brown sugar in the streusel seems like a lot—maybe cut it? Also I always cook sweet potatoes longer than 20 mins, they can still be kinda firm sometimes.

  86. 5 stars
SO good. Sweet potatoes are like nature’s candy! Yum!!

  87. 3 stars
I don’t know why, but mine came out a little wet in the center even after 35 minutes. I think my sweet potatoes were bigger cubes.

    1. 3 stars
35 min should be enough but if yours was wet in center maybe the sweet potatoes weren’t mashed smooth or you packed the dish too tight. Next time mash a bit more and make sure they’re fully tender when you poke them. I’d bake til it doesn’t jiggle.

    2. User avatar Frankie and Benjy says:

      4 stars
I’ve had that happen when the cubes are bigger or the sweet potatoes don’t fully steam through after boiling. I’d try smaller cubes next time (about 1/2-inch) and bake a few minutes longer—also cover loosely with foil if the streusel is browning too fast.

  88. User avatar fidela.heller28 says:

    3 stars
Pretty tasty, but I think 1/2 cup butter is a lot—mine turned out a little greasy. Next time I’ll reduce the butter slightly and bake a couple minutes longer to firm it up.

    1. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

      5 stars
Totally get it—1/2 cup melted butter can tip things toward greasy if the sweet potatoes were extra moist. Your plan (a bit less butter + a couple more minutes) sounds spot on. I’ve had better luck letting it bake until the center looks set, not just “hot.”

  89. 3 stars
The flavor is good, but I felt like it was a bit eggy? Maybe I’ll reduce the eggs or add more vanilla. Also 4 cups sweet potato is kinda vague—mine was more like 3.

    1. 4 stars
Hmm I didn’t think mine was eggy at all? Maybe it depends how watery the mashed sweet potatoes are. Did you mash really smooth? Also 4 cups being vague is real—mine was closer to 3 cups too, so I’d say start with 3 and add a splash of milk if it feels dry.

    2. User avatar rocco.littel1984 says:

      5 stars
I totally get the “eggy” note—2 large eggs can be pretty noticeable in sweet potato casseroles. I’ve had better results using just 1 egg (or adding a touch more vanilla) and it bakes up more custardy than egg-forward.

  90. User avatar erick.roob98 says:

    3 stars
Not sure why there are both granulated sugar and brown sugar—felt kinda double-sweet. I’d cut sugar next time and maybe use less flour in the streusel.

  91. User avatar ellsworth.windler18 says:

    5 stars
This turned out so cozy and sweet—my topping was super golden after 35 minutes. I added a pinch of cinnamon and it tasted like holiday dessert. Definitely making again!

  92. User avatar Miss Era Bernier says:

    4 stars
Wow!!! so good. I didnt even have vanilla so I used almond extract and it still taste great.

  93. User avatar logan.steuber65 says:

    3 stars
3 out of 5. I mean it’s tasty but it’s kind of heavy. Also I forgot to grease the dish and it stuck a little—pain!

  94. User avatar milissa.dibbert47 says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, 4 cups sweet potatoes is a lot. I ended up with extra filling after greasing my dish. Still good, just portion control next time!

  95. User avatar toya.jaskolski2010 says:

    4 stars
The topping is kinda like a crumbly cookie thing (in a good way). I pressed it down slightly so it didn’t fall off when serving.

    1. User avatar jules.dubuque66 says:

      5 stars
That’s exactly how I like it too—pressed down a bit so it stays crunchy when you scoop it. Did you find it got extra golden in spots?

    2. User avatar basementDweller says:

      3 stars
Huh, I thought it was supposed to be more “saucy” under the topping. Mine kinda fell off though—maybe I didn’t press it enough. Still tasted good!

  96. User avatar arden.farrell1983 says:

    4 stars
Honestly pretty solid. I used a little less sugar (like 1/4 cup) and it still tasted great. Next time I’ll toast the pecans first for more flavor.

  97. 4 stars
I followed the steps and it was easy. Only thing: I think boiling time depends on potato size, so 20 minutes wasn’t quite enough for my cubes. I baked another 5 minutes and it was fine.

    1. User avatar micheal.bauch says:

      4 stars
Hmm 20 minutes seems short to me. My cubes took like forever (maybe I cut them too big). Also I noticed it thickened more after baking—next time I’ll check doneness instead of the timer.

    2. User avatar heidy.kutch says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—sweet potato cube size makes a big difference. I usually just keep boiling until a fork slides in easily. Love that you adjusted with the extra 5 min!

  98. User avatar shelby.crist97 says:

    4 stars
The texture was perfect after mashing. Next time I’ll chop the pecans a bit finer so the topping is less chunky, but flavor is on point.

  99. User avatar Rich Mann says:

    5 stars
This turned out *so* comforting. The pecan streusel is the star—crispy on top but still creamy underneath. I added a pinch of cinnamon too and it tasted like holiday season in a dish.

    1. User avatar walter.halvorson94 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! I love when the streusel stays crunchy on top but the casserole is still creamy underneath. That pinch of cinnamon sounds perfect—definitely trying that next time. Thanks for the holiday-vibes tip!

  100. User avatar Storm Atronach says:

    4 stars
The instructions are clear, but my topping clumped when I mixed it. Still tasted great, just looked a bit rustic.

    1. User avatar Gail Andrews says:

      5 stars
That’s actually super normal with streusel—if the butter is a little too warm or you overmix, it can clump. Next time try rubbing the softened butter in with a fork and keep it crumbly. Glad it still tasted great though!

  101. User avatar mervin.strosin1968 says:

    2 stars
1/3 cup flour in topping feels like too much flour. Mine tasted a bit bready. Would reduce next time.

  102. User avatar randal.quigley21 says:

    3 stars
I followed the recipe exactly but mine came out a bit dense. Tastes good though—maybe my mashed sweet potatoes were too wet. Still comforting!

    1. 4 stars
Sounds like you did everything right! If your sweet potatoes were wetter than usual, that could definitely make it dense. Next time, try mashing a bit longer to steam off extra moisture (or let the mashed sweet potatoes cool uncovered) before mixing in the eggs/milk.

    2. User avatar val.johnson57 says:

      5 stars
Dense but tastes good still? That’s basically a win 😅 Also I wonder if I got the same issue when my sweet potatoes weren’t fully drained—though I swear I “drained” them. Maybe add a tiny bit less milk next time? Not too much though or it’ll dry out.

  103. User avatar dorcas.boyer90 says:

    3 stars
Ok but… why milk and eggs? Seems like more work than it needs. Still, the result was tasty and everyone ate it, so I can’t complain.

  104. User avatar gus.harvey1984 says:

    4 stars
I’m skeptical about casseroles with so much butter and sugar, but wow… it’s worth it. The eggs help it set nicely.

  105. User avatar gregg.pfannerstill1980 says:

    3 stars
Pretty good, but mine turned out a little too sweet. I think 1/2 cup granulated sugar plus brown sugar in the topping is overkill—maybe cut one of them.

  106. 3 stars
I followed it pretty closely, but mine was a little runny after baking. Maybe I measured the milk wrong? Still tasted yummy though—just didn’t set as firmly as I expected.

  107. User avatar jaclyn.kertzmann says:

    4 stars
Okay but like, why does it call for brown sugar AND granulated sugar? Seems like overkill. 🤔

    1. 5 stars
I think both sugars add different flavors and textures to the dish! Brown sugar gives it that nice caramel taste 😋.

  108. User avatar basementDweller says:

    5 stars
Made this for Thanksgiving and it disappeared fast. The streusel is legit—golden, crunchy, and not too sweet. Really cozy comfort food!

  109. User avatar jacquelyn.abernathy64 says:

    5 stars
This turned out so cozy and sweet—golden pecan topping was the best part. I mashed the sweet potatoes a bit more and it got super smooth. Will definitely make again for the holidays!

  110. User avatar Hilda Climb says:

    2 stars
Pecans are great, but the topping feels kinda dry compared to other streusels I’ve made. Next time I’d add a touch more butter or reduce the flour. Flavor’s okay, texture needs help.

  111. User avatar emery.shields says:

    4 stars
Wait, sweet potatoes are actually good in dessert? I was sure it would be nasty. Turned out alright tho. 😅

  112. User avatar grasshopper says:

    3 stars
This is good but I wish it had more spice. No cinnamon/nutmeg here—kinda plain for me. Still, my family ate it all.

  113. 4 stars
I used salted butter accidentally and honestly it was fine, just different. Still tasted homey. The texture was pudding-ish in the middle, which I actually enjoyed.

    1. User avatar Loonquawl and Phouchg says:

      3 stars
Salted butter and “pudding-ish” center? I’m not sure I’d love the texture—mine has to be more set like a custard. Maybe you baked it a bit less time or had bigger chunks? How long did you leave it in? If it was 35 min+ I’d be worried.

    2. User avatar sammie.padberg63 says:

      5 stars
Honestly that sounds pretty perfect—salted butter is one of those “accidentally better” things sometimes. The pudding-ish middle also matches sweet potatoes being extra creamy when they’re not overbaked. Glad it still tasted homey! 😊

  114. User avatar sheree.jones2020 says:

    4 stars
I used 1% milk by accident and it still worked. The texture was slightly softer, but the streusel saved it. Easy to make too.

    1. 5 stars
Good to know about the 1% milk! I always worry about substitutions changing the texture, but softer sounds totally fine—especially if the streusel is doing the heavy lifting. Glad it was still easy too!

  115. User avatar jodie.cassin says:

    5 stars
My family devoured it in like 10 minutes. Sweet but not overly. I added a pinch of cinnamon to the mash and it made it taste even more like fall.

  116. User avatar Reg Nullify says:

    3 stars
My topping was crumbly at first but then it kind of sank in. Could be my butter was too soft or I baked too short. Flavor still amazing.

  117. 4 stars
So sweet 😅 but my kids loved it. Easy enough and the pecans definitely help. Would make again.

  118. User avatar Lumberjack says:

    5 stars
Yum, this is the best sweet potato dish I’ve ever made! So easy and the flavors are perfect. 👍

  119. User avatar nathanael.morissette0 says:

    4 stars
The instructions are clear and the math of the cups/temps makes sense. I was worried about the streusel turning into a paste, but it browned nicely. Great balance overall.

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree—mine browned the same way and I was nervous the streusel would get all gummy. The balance is perfect.

    2. 4 stars
I thought the temps/cups were a little off, but ok it worked for you. Did you mash the sweet potatoes super smooth or leave chunks? Mine turned out a bit lumpy.

  120. User avatar sammie.kautzer60 says:

    4 stars
I’m not usually a sweet potato person, but this casserole has such a comforting flavor. I used walnuts instead of pecans because that’s what I had, and it still worked!

  121. 2 stars
Not sure about 1/2 cup granulated sugar plus 1/2 cup brown sugar—felt pretty sweet to me. Next time I’ll cut the sugar in half.

  122. User avatar Android 17 says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about mixing eggs with sweet potatoes like that, but it set up nicely. Flavor is spot on.

  123. User avatar Shaunna Durgan says:

    4 stars
I like the idea, but I found it a little too sweet with both granulated and brown sugar. Next time I’ll cut the sugar down and maybe add a pinch of salt to balance.

  124. User avatar liberal.hero says:

    4 stars
I’m skeptical about baking sweet potatoes with both granulated + brown sugar and eggs… but wow, it works. Really comforting.

  125. 3 stars
My casserole was more like pudding than casserole… I boiled the sweet potatoes maybe too long. Still yummy, just not the texture I wanted.

    1. User avatar gena.langworth45 says:

      4 stars
I think 20 min boiling is too long, I always steam mine instead 😅 Also maybe you needed a little more flour in the filling? Mine always sets up like a casserole, not pudding.

    2. User avatar Arthur Dent says:

      5 stars
Ooh I get that—if the sweet potatoes go too soft, they can turn more custardy/pudding-like after baking. Next time, you might boil until just tender (start checking around 15 minutes) and mash just until smooth—don’t overwork it.

  126. User avatar Paul "Muad'Dib" "Usul" Atreides says:

    4 stars
I didn’t peel the sweet potatoes (lazy), and it was still good. Also I used walnuts instead of pecans, worked fine. (Don’t judge 😅)

  127. User avatar gavin.fritsch2012 says:

    5 stars
Made this for Thanksgiving and it disappeared fast. The streusel is legit—golden, crunchy, and sweet without being too much.

  128. 5 stars
Way better than plain sweet potatoes! I like that it’s not just sweet—there’s a buttery nutty crunch. Next time I might add a little salt to pop the flavors.

  129. User avatar ross.blick61 says:

    3 stars
I love sweet potatoes, so I was excited—however my streusel turned into crumbs that wouldn’t really stick. I think my butter wasn’t soft enough. Still ate it all, lol.

  130. User avatar Darcey Lakin says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly and mine came out a bit watery—maybe I under-mashed the sweet potatoes? Still tasted good though, just not as thick as I hoped.

  131. User avatar merrill.wyman says:

    4 stars
I used walnuts instead of pecans (because that’s what I had). It worked, but the flavor isn’t the same. Would definitely go back to pecans though.

    1. User avatar Bowerick Wowbagger says:

      4 stars
I did walnuts once and thought it tasted fine tbh. Maybe your casserole got a little more “earthy” than “sweet”? Next time try adding an extra splash of vanilla or a pinch of cinnamon so it’s closer to pecan flavor.

    2. User avatar buford.runolfsdottir says:

      5 stars
Good to know! I’m always swapping nuts based on what’s in the pantry. Walnuts usually work, but yeah—pecans have that sweeter, buttery vibe. I’ll stick to pecans next time.

  132. 3 stars
My topping clumped—maybe I didn’t use soft enough butter. Still tasted good, just looked rustic. I’d make again and just break up the butter more.

    1. User avatar Kenneth Bruen says:

      3 stars
Hmm I don’t know… I feel like using melted butter in the casserole might make it wetter and then the topping clumps anyway? I usually bake without the flour in the streusel—more like just pecans + brown sugar + butter. Still, rustic is fine lol.

    2. 5 stars
That makes sense—if the butter wasn’t softened enough, the streusel kind of turns into bigger clumps instead of a nice crumb. Next time, try breaking up the butter into smaller pieces before mixing, and it should stay more even. Glad it still tasted good though!

  133. User avatar Dulcie Durgan says:

    5 stars
I followed the instructions exactly and the topping actually got golden and stayed crisp. Love that butter + brown sugar combo.

  134. User avatar doretta.hermann87 says:

    4 stars
This is giving “dessert pretending to be a side.” Not bad! I just wish the streusel had more cinnamon or something, but the texture is nice.

  135. User avatar lino.will says:

    5 stars
Made this for Thanksgiving and it was a hit. The streusel smelled amazing while baking—sweet but not cloying. I used slightly less sugar and it still tasted perfect.

  136. User avatar denver.kshlerin53 says:

    3 stars
Pretty sweet. Like, almost dessert sweet. If you’re not into that, maybe cut the granulated sugar a bit. Otherwise, nice flavor.

  137. User avatar dena.sporer83 says:

    5 stars
I followed the recipe exactly and it was delicious. The topping got that perfect golden color without burning. Will make again for holidays.

  138. User avatar todd.pacocha says:

    5 stars
    Five stars. Easy and delicious!

  139. User avatar barton.gleason1979 says:

    2 stars
Way too sweet for my taste. I’d cut the granulated sugar down to 1/4 cup and maybe add a pinch of salt to balance.

  140. 5 stars
Made this for Thanksgiving and it was gone fast. The streusel is the real MVP—so buttery and crunchy. I’ll definitely make it again.

    1. 5 stars
That’s awesome—thanks for confirming the streusel is the real star! I love when the topping stays buttery and crunchy like that. Definitely adding this to my rotation.

    2. User avatar dena.kessler1957 says:

      3 stars
I made it too, but mine turned out kinda sweet-soupy. Maybe I didn’t mash the potatoes well? Still tasty though—streusel saved it. Next time I’ll bake it a couple more minutes.

  141. 4 stars
Real quick: 20 minutes boiling + 30-35 baking felt right, no issues. I’m glad it’s not overly complicated; even I can do it 😄

  142. User avatar cristopher.dicki47 says:

    4 stars
I followed the steps and the topping browned fast, like in 20 minutes. Might depend on ovens—maybe cover with foil halfway through.

  143. 4 stars
It’s giving dessert, not casserole. I mean that in a good way… but I’d serve it as a sweet side. Very rich.

  144. 3 stars
Mine got too dark on top before it set. I think my oven runs hot. Covering loosely with foil halfway through would probably fix that.

  145. 5 stars
The instructions are clear, and I was surprised how easy it was. I used roasted pecans and it gave it more flavor than I expected. Great comfort food.

  146. 3 stars
Hmmm 350°F for 30-35 minutes—seems short for sweet potato. Also 1/2 cup butter in filling feels like a lot. I’m skeptical but I’ll try it once and report back 😅

    1. User avatar shelia.olson says:

      4 stars
I was side-eyeing the timing too, but since they’re already boiled/mashed first, 30–35 min is really just to set the custardy filling and toast the streusel. The 1/2 cup butter sounds like a lot, but some of it’s in the topping (also softened). If you try it and it’s too rich, you could cut by a couple tbsp and add a splash more milk.

  147. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

    4 stars
Followed the recipe pretty much exactly, but mine came out a bit too soft underneath. Maybe I needed to bake longer than 35 min. Taste is still great though—nice vanilla flavor.

  148. User avatar lorelei.bins80 says:

    5 stars
Super easy and smells amazing while baking. I’m not a great cook and I managed it. Greased dish + even topping = success.
