Sugar Cookies

December 15, 2025

Sugar cookies are a classic treat that instantly brings a sense of comfort and celebration. Simple in flavor yet endlessly charming, they have a soft sweetness that appeals to everyone, making them a staple for holidays, birthdays, and everyday baking moments. Whether enjoyed plain or decorated with icing and sprinkles, sugar cookies feel familiar in the best possible way.

What makes sugar cookies so special is their versatility. The dough holds its shape beautifully, which is why they’re perfect for cut out cookies during the holidays. From stars and hearts to festive seasonal shapes, sugar cookies become little canvases for creativity. At the same time, they are just as satisfying when baked into soft, round cookies with lightly crisp edges and tender centers.

Sugar cookies also carry a strong sense of nostalgia. For many, they’re tied to childhood memories of baking with family, flour dusted countertops, and waiting patiently by the oven. The scent of vanilla and butter filling the kitchen is often enough to bring back those moments, even years later. It’s a reminder that some recipes don’t need to change to remain loved.

These cookies pair beautifully with a cup of cinnamon tea, affogato coffee, or a cold glass of milk. They’re easy to share, easy to transport, and always welcome on a dessert table. Whether you’re making them for a festive gathering or a quiet afternoon treat, sugar cookies have a way of making any moment feel a little sweeter.

In a world of complex desserts and bold flavors, sugar cookies stand out for their simplicity. They prove that a few basic ingredients, when handled with care, can create something truly special. Familiar, comforting, and endlessly customizable, sugar cookies continue to earn their place as one of the most beloved baked goods of all time.

Sugar cookies at 350°? Isn’t that high? I usually bake at 300°. What gives?

These cookies were okay, but honestly, I’ve made better from a box mix.

Can I use margarine instead of butter? I only have that at home. Help!

My dough was super sticky! I followed the recipe but something went wrong. What did I do?

I love sugar cookies, and this one is simple and reliable. Creaming the butter and sugar really makes a difference—mine were light and not greasy.

Yes!! Creaming the butter and sugar is the whole secret, and I love that yours turned out light and not greasy. Mine usually get greasy when I rush that step 😅

    2. 3 stars
I made these once and they were kind of bland, like sugar cookies with no personality. Maybe I overbaked at 10 min? Also I didn’t cream long enough—mine were a little gritty. Still ate them though.

OMG! These cookies are so good!!! I ate like 10 right outta the oven!

10 cookies? That’s a bit much, don’t you think? Lol, but I guess they are delicious!

  12. User avatar janetta.beer89 says:

Cookies are ok, but I think the flour measurement is off. Mine were too dry.

  13. 3 stars
I dunno, my cookies turned out kinda flat. Maybe I did something wrong? 😕

  14. User avatar laurinda.friesen says:

Sugar cookies? More like sugar bricks. Didn’t come out like I hoped. Disappointing. 🙁

Quick and easy recipe! Kids loved them. 🥰

  16. User avatar rich.landlord says:

Too much flour? I thought it needed at least a cup of sprinkles! Anyway, pretty good.

  17. 5 stars
These cookies were amazing! So soft and sweet. Definitely making them again!

  18. User avatar jose.adams says:

    5 stars
I added some sprinkles on top and they looked so cute! Great for a party!

Why would you use so much butter? Seems unhealthy. I’m gonna stick to my oatmeal cookies.

    1. User avatar chance.zboncak says:

      5 stars
Butter makes cookies taste amazing! You might be missing out on something delicious. 😋

    2. User avatar rich.landlord says:

      3 stars
But healthy cookies ain’t a thing if they don’t taste good! Just enjoy them in moderation.

  20. 4 stars
Pretty good, but mine came out a little too puffy and not as “cookie-like” as I expected. Maybe I used baking soda by accident (still taste great though).

  21. User avatar cleo.ratke77 says:

    2 stars
I don’t know what went wrong but mine turned out really hard. Did I bake them too long?

  22. User avatar chang.keebler91 says:

    3 stars
I think the recipe could use more flavor. Maybe add some lemon zest next time?

  23. User avatar staci.kohler74 says:

I followed it mostly, but I accidentally used salted butter and upped the salt—oops. Still tasty though, just a bit too salty for me.

    1. User avatar tracy.mann says:

      4 stars
Ahh been there 😅 Salted butter will totally throw off the balance. Glad they were still tasty though—next time maybe cut back the added salt or use unsalted!

  24. 2 stars
My dough was sticky so I added extra flour and maybe I overbaked—edges got a bit too dark. Still, they disappeared fast, so… worth it.

    1. User avatar Florene Hoppe says:

      5 stars
Maybe you should try chilling the dough 30 min. Sticky dough is usually butter too warm. Also 10 min seems short but if your oven runs hot then yeah edges burn. But glad they disappeared tho, so it worked.

    2. User avatar Piter De Vries says:

      4 stars
Oof, the sticky dough + overbaking combo can happen, but honestly “edges a bit too dark” is still in the cookie zone 😅 I’ve added a touch more flour before too—just try not to go wild. Next time, pull them right when the edges look *lightly* golden!

  25. User avatar Killer Bees says:

    4 stars
Just loved how easy this recipe was! My kids helped and they had a blast!

  26. 4 stars
Baking is just not my thing, but my sister made them and they were awesome! Kudos!

    1. User avatar Ray Wyman says:

      4 stars
I guess baking isn’t for everyone! But those cookies do sound delicious! Maybe you can try an easier recipe next time? 😄

  27. User avatar rene.mertz38 says:

    3 stars
No offense, but 2 3/4 cups flour sounds like a lot. I ended up adding a splash of milk because my dough was super dry. After that, they were nice!

  28. 5 stars
These came out buttery and actually tasted like real sugar cookies, not weirdly flat like some recipes. I chilled the dough 20 min too and it helped a lot.

  29. User avatar Vroomfondel says:

    5 stars
These cookies are a family favorite! So soft and buttery. A must-try for sure!

  30. User avatar hollis.okon says:

    3 stars
For me they spread a little more than I like. Maybe my butter was too soft or my flour measurement was off, but flavor is good.
