Pumpkin Mac and Cheese is a comforting and flavorful twist on the classic mac and cheese. This fall-inspired version combines the richness of creamy cheese sauce with the subtle sweetness of pumpkin, creating a dish that’s both savory and a little sweet. The addition of pumpkin gives the cheese sauce a velvety texture, while its earthy flavor pairs perfectly with the sharpness of cheese. Whether you’re craving something cozy for a chilly night or looking to impress guests with a seasonal dish, this recipe is sure to become a fall favorite.
The base of pumpkin mac and cheese is a creamy cheese sauce made with milk, butter, and a blend of cheeses such as sharp cheddar and Gruyère. The addition of pure pumpkin puree adds a rich, creamy texture and a hint of sweetness, which beautifully complements the savory flavors of the cheese. A touch of garlic, nutmeg, and a sprinkle of cinnamon enhance the pumpkin’s natural flavors, giving the dish a warm, comforting depth.
The pasta, usually elbow macaroni, is cooked al dente and tossed in the creamy pumpkin cheese sauce. The result is a comforting, rich, and creamy dish that feels indulgent without being overly heavy. For added texture, top the mac and cheese with a buttery breadcrumb topping and bake it in the oven until golden and crispy. This extra step adds a satisfying crunch that contrasts with the creamy pasta, making each bite even more enjoyable.
Pumpkin Mac and Cheese is incredibly versatile. You can customize it by adding extras like crispy bacon, sautéed onions, or a handful of spinach for added color and flavor. If you want a bit of spice, a pinch of cayenne pepper or smoked paprika can give the dish a subtle kick. It pairs wonderfully with a light salad or roasted vegetables, making it a great choice for any meal, from casual weeknight dinners to festive holiday spreads.
Whether you’re serving it to family, friends, or enjoying it yourself, Pumpkin Mac and Cheese is a perfect way to embrace the flavors of fall while enjoying a comforting, cheesy favorite.

Deliciously Fall.. To “Fall” in love with Mac all over again!!!!
This is soooo good! I loved the blend of pumpkin and cheese. Perfect for fall! 🍂
Super easy and delicious! I added some extra spices. Recommend!
Mac n cheese?! Pumpkin?! Yuck!
Made this last night and it’s cozy in a different way than regular mac. The sauce turned out super creamy, and the nutmeg is a nice touch.
Simple and delicious! I added some bacon for extra flavor. Yummy!
I followed the recipe exactly but mine turned out kinda grainy? I think I may have overheated the cheese. Still edible though. Will try again and keep the heat lower.
The sauce thickened nicely, but I had to whisk a bit longer in step 3 or it got a tiny bit lumpy. Still delicious—comfort food with a twist.
Is pumpkin suppose to go with cheese? Just feels wrong. I was skeptical but gave it a go. Okay but not my fave.
This was surprisingly good! The pumpkin adds a nice creaminess. Will make again!
I was skeptical about pumpkin in mac and cheese, but wow! This is delicious!
My kids said it’s ‘orange pasta’ lol but they ate it all. I think the garlic powder was the missing magic.
Orange pasta is the best kind 😂 Glad your kids liked it! Also yes—garlic powder really does make a difference.
Hmm pumpkin in mac n cheese sounds… questionable, but if they ate it all then I’ll trust you. I might add a bit more garlic powder next time.
I’m not gonna lie, I was skeptical. But OMG, this is bomb! Who knew? LOL.
Glad you liked it! I was also surprised how good it turned out. Perfect for fall vibes! 🍂
Okay so I used canned pumpkin and it was fine, but I think I under-salted. Flavor felt a little flat until I added more salt at the end.
Kinda bland. I added more garlic and some chili flakes, and it helped a bit, but still not great.
Delish!! My new favorite dish! Get in my belly!
Tasted kinda strange. I don’t think pumpkin belongs in mac and cheese. Just my opinion.
I didn’t have nutmeg so I used cinnamon… don’t do that unless you like pumpkin pie vibes. The base recipe is fine, but the spice swap ruined it for me.
This is a delicious twist on regular mac and cheese! My kids loved it!
I tried this and my kids wouldn’t even touch it! No way I’m making this again.
That’s a bummer! Maybe the kids just aren’t into pumpkin? You could try adding more cheese next time!
