Plum Dumplings

September 5, 2025

Plum dumplings are a beloved comfort food in many Central and Eastern European kitchens, a dish that beautifully combines simplicity with a touch of sweetness. At first glance, they may seem like a humble treat, but one bite reveals the magic inside: tender dough wrapped around juicy, ripe plums, often dusted with cinnamon sugar or rolled in buttery breadcrumbs. The contrast of soft dough and sweet fruit makes this dessert both nostalgic and satisfying.

Traditionally, the dough is made from potatoes, flour, and eggs, giving it a pillowy texture that balances the tartness of the plums. Once shaped and boiled, the dumplings are finished in a coating of golden breadcrumbs toasted in butter, which adds a nutty crunch. A sprinkle of sugar or a drizzle of honey takes them to another level, creating a dessert that is rustic yet elegant.

Plum dumplings are often enjoyed during late summer and early autumn when plums are in season and at their juiciest. Families gather to prepare them in batches, making the dish as much about the process as it is about the taste. For many, it carries the flavor of childhood, bringing back memories of warm kitchens, family meals, and the joy of sharing something homemade.

While they are most often served as a dessert, plum dumplings can also double as a main course in some traditions, especially when accompanied by a simple soup or light salad. Their versatility makes them a comforting option for both everyday meals and festive occasions.

What makes plum dumplings so special is their ability to blend savory and sweet elements into one harmonious dish. The dough is hearty, the fruit is bright, and the finish is indulgent without being overly rich. They are a reminder that the best comfort foods are often the simplest, born from seasonal ingredients and family traditions.

Whether served warm straight from the pot or reheated the next day, plum dumplings bring a touch of sweetness and nostalgia to the table. They celebrate the beauty of seasonal fruit, the creativity of traditional cooking, and the joy of gathering over food that connects generations.

Plum Dumplings are a delightful dessert made by wrapping sweet plums in a soft dough and then boiling them. They are often coated with buttered breadcrumbs and sugared, resulting in a sweet, comforting dish that is perfect for any occasion.
Servings 1 people
Prep Time 30 minutes
Cook Time 15 minutes
Total Time 45 minutes

Ingredients

  • 10 pieces plums small and ripe
  • 250 grams all-purpose flour for the dough
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 50 grams butter melted, for coating
  • 100 grams breadcrumbs for coating
  • 3 tablespoons sugar or to taste

Instructions

  • Pit the plums by removing the stones carefully, trying not to break the fruit.
  • In a bowl, mix the all-purpose flour, a pinch of salt, and a little water to form a soft, pliable dough.
  • Divide the dough into as many parts as there are plums, flatten each part and wrap it around a plum.
  • Bring a pot of salted water to a boil and gently place the dumplings into the boiling water. Cook until they float to the surface, about 10-15 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, in a pan, melt the butter and add the breadcrumbs. Toast them until golden brown.
  • Remove the dumplings from the pot and roll them in the toasted breadcrumbs, then sprinkle with sugar before serving.

Simple and tasty! I’d suggest adding cinnamon to the breadcrumbs next time for a fun twist 🙂

Great idea! Cinnamon would add a nice warmth to it. I’ll definitely try that next time!

I tried making these but the dough was too sticky. Maybe I added too much water? Not sure about this recipe.

  3. User avatar rolande.ratke says:

These dumplings are absolutely delicious! The plums were perfectly sweet and tangy. Definitely making this again!

  4. 4 stars
Yum! The kids loved them. They’re a great treat for summer. I used a mix of plums and peaches because I had them!

  5. 3 stars
Way too much sugar for my taste! Should have watched the sugar a bit. Might try again with less.

Dough was hard to work with, and they fell apart while boiling. Maybe a beginner’s recipe?

    1. User avatar refugio.ryan58 says:

      3 stars
Honestly, I found it pretty easy. Maybe just try using less flour? It’s not that complicated! 😏

I had the same issue! The dough was tough. I think I might have added too much flour. 🤷‍♀️

  7. User avatar cleo.rogahn1999 says:

Pretty good, though my dough was way too sticky at first. I added extra flour and it finally worked. Next time I’ll be more careful with the water amount.

    1. 5 stars
Glad it still worked! Dough can definitely go sticky depending on how ripe/watery the plums are and how much water you end up adding in step 2. Next time, start with less water and add gradually—great call on being more careful.

    2. 4 stars
I had the same issue—mine was like glue at first. I think the instruction says “a little water” but that’s super vague. Also do you weigh the flour or scoop it? I scooped and it was probably less than 250g 😅

  8. 5 stars
These turned out amazing! The kids loved them! 💕

  9. 3 stars
I forgot the sugar! Oops. They were fine but maybe not as tasty.

    1. 4 stars
Don’t sweat it! Sugar’s just for taste, but those dumplings still sound good. 😊

    2. 2 stars
How can you forget the sugar? That’s like making pancakes without the syrup! 😩

Yuck! The dough was too thick. I can’t recommend this. Total fail.

    1. 2 stars
I had the same problem! The dough was way too thick for me too. Maybe we overmixed it or something? Not a fan.

    2. User avatar ty.bauch7 says:

      4 stars
Try rolling it thinner next time! I didn’t have any issues, they turned out great for me. Don’t give up yet!

Plums are too sweet, what’s the point?? I used peaches instead, still good.

  12. User avatar hiroko.strosin51 says:

Never heard of this recipe before. Sounds weird. Plums? Really?

  13. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    3 stars
The butter breadcrumb topping is good, but 10 plums felt like a lot of fruit for 250g flour? I ended up with extra dough and had to make smaller dumplings. Also my sugar melted into a weird glaze—kinda messy but yummy.

  14. User avatar gail.windler says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, 10 plums for 250g flour seems like a lot of dough per plum? Mine were doughy in the center. Still tasty, just not the texture I wanted.

    1. User avatar leeanna.rogahn85 says:

      4 stars
That makes sense—10 plums can be a lot depending on how big they are. Your note about the doughy center sounds like the dumplings might have needed a bit longer, or the dough portions were slightly thick. I’ve found that if the dough layer isn’t thin enough, it stays dense even after they float.

  15. 3 stars
I forgot the sugar! 😱 They were still edible, but don’t skip it like I did!!

  16. User avatar eddie.muller says:

I’m really skeptical about the butter and breadcrumbs. Isn’t that too much?

5 stars. My family asked me to make them again the same day. The “float to the surface” timing is super helpful.

I tried this once and the dumplings sank the whole time… I think my water wasn’t boiling hard enough. Do you keep a rolling boil the whole 10-15 mins?

    2. 5 stars
That’s awesome! The float trick really is the make-or-break step—glad it worked for you and your family. 😊

  20. User avatar Bipin and Blossom's son says:

um… I tried this and they kinda tasted like plain dumplings? I followed it, but maybe my plums were too sour? idk. Would make again with sweeter fruit though.

Too ripe plums can be a pain! Maybe try using firmer ones next time? But glad they still tasted good! 😊

  23. User avatar garth.pfannerstill says:

I tried using salted butter by mistake and the sugar felt weirdly off, so I’ll say: watch your salt level. Otherwise great comfort food.

  24. User avatar Frodo Baggins says:

Plum dumplings? Like, who even thought of that? Sounds weird but I guess it was alright.

I was skeptical at first too, but these dumplings are surprisingly delicious! Definitely worth a try!

Yummy! My kids loved it. I didn’t even mind the mess in the kitchen.

  26. User avatar alberto.dare says:

Hmm, I think rice flour would have been better for the dough? Anyone tried?

    1. User avatar ambrose.tillman50 says:

      4 stars
I haven’t tried it with rice flour, but I think it might change the texture a lot. Might worth a shot!

  29. 5 stars
Plums are the BEST fruit! This recipe is awesome, I gobbled them all up! 🍑

  30. 5 stars
I made these with slightly bigger plums and just added a bit more flour. The breadcrumb coating is honestly the best part—crispy, buttery, and not too sweet. Definitely saving this recipe.

  31. User avatar melvina.stanton99 says:

    3 stars
I found the recipe kinda confusing. What do you mean by ‘a little water’? Can you give a measurement?

    1. 3 stars
I think it’s subjective. Just add water until the dough feels right! It’s more about the texture than a measurement.

    2. User avatar curt.barrows30 says:

      4 stars
I agree, ‘a little water’ is too vague! Maybe start with a couple of tablespoons? Just enough to make it not sticky!

  32. User avatar kirk.kohler92 says:

    2 stars
Eh… the instructions are missing amounts of water, so I just guessed and it turned into a mess. The breadcrumbs were nice, but overall not worth repeating.

    1. User avatar hipolito.brakus78 says:

      4 stars
I had the same problem the first time 😅 I ended up using just enough water for a soft dough—like “play-dough” consistency. They turned out way better once I stopped guessing too wildly.

    2. User avatar antione.fadel85 says:

      3 stars
Wow, I think you’re being a little harsh. The dough step literally says “a little water,” so it’s supposed to be flexible. If your dumplings were a mess maybe the dough was too wet or you overcooked them.

  33. 2 stars
I don’t know what I did wrong, but mine came out bland. Maybe too little sugar?

    1. 4 stars
It sounds like you might have missed adding enough sugar or the plums weren’t sweet enough. Maybe try measuring more carefully next time? Don’t give up!

  34. User avatar lucius.bednar5 says:

    4 stars
I’m skeptical about dumplings boiling 10-15 min—feels short for dough. But they cooked perfectly for me once they floated. Maybe I just needed a better pot size.

  35. User avatar rupert.hegmann says:

    3 stars
I followed it closely but mine kind of burst when I wrapped the dough. I think I pinched too thin. Flavor was good though, especially with the toasted breadcrumbs.

  36. 2 stars
I tried this once and the dumplings broke apart when I put them in the water. Could be my fault for not sealing the dough well, but still—be careful!

  37. User avatar ozzie.brown70 says:

    5 stars
Dumplings? Who knew plums could go in dumplings? But I tried it, and WOW!

  38. User avatar Hillman Hunter says:

    3 stars
I tried this recipe but found it kind of bland. Maybe I should’ve added more sugar??

    1. User avatar water buffalo says:

      5 stars
I agree! I added more sugar and it turned out delicious! Don’t be afraid to experiment!

  39. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    3 stars
Easy recipe, but the cooking time was off. They started to fall apart.
