Kale and Quinoa Salad

July 25, 2025

Kale and quinoa may sound like the ultimate health-food duo, but this salad goes far beyond the clichés. It’s vibrant, hearty, and full of texture, the kind of dish that doesn’t feel like a compromise. Whether you’re looking for a satisfying lunch, a colorful side, or a plant-based dinner, this salad delivers on all fronts.

At its core, this is a salad that brings together bold greens and protein-packed grains. Kale, with its earthy bitterness and satisfying crunch, stands up beautifully to the nutty, fluffy quinoa. It’s a pairing that works because they balance each other out, one is rugged and strong, the other light and adaptable. When tossed together, they create the foundation for endless flavor possibilities.

What really elevates this salad is the layering of textures. Think toasted seeds for crunch, creamy avocado for richness, maybe some dried cranberries or pomegranate seeds for a pop of sweetness. The salad is endlessly customizable depending on what you have in your kitchen or what’s in season. That’s part of the beauty, it’s flexible, unfussy, and still feels fresh every time.

A zesty dressing, often citrus- or vinegar-based, helps to soften the kale and tie all the components together. The longer it sits, the better it gets. This is one of those rare salads that actually improve after a few hours in the fridge. It’s make-ahead friendly, which makes it great for meal prep or entertaining.

Beyond the flavor and texture, Kale and Quinoa Salad checks all the right boxes nutritionally. It’s loaded with fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and plant-based protein. It’s the kind of food that energizes rather than weighs you down.

In short, this salad is far from boring. It’s colorful, nutrient-dense, and completely satisfying. Whether you’re trying to eat more greens or simply want something delicious that happens to be good for you, Kale and Quinoa Salad is a modern classic worth keeping on rotation.

OMG I love feta, it made this salad so tasty! Yummy!

Why do you have to massage the kale? Seems silly to me.

    1. 5 stars
Massaging the kale helps break down the tough fibers, making it easier to eat and more flavorful! It’s not silly at all!

Ehh, I don’t think it’s worth the hype. They say it’s healthy but tastes… bleh.

Healthy doesn’t always mean tasty tho. I tried this and I didn’t like it either. Just my opinion!

Why cook that quinoa? I just use rice instead. Quinoa tastes weird.

I followed it mostly, but my quinoa took a few extra minutes to get fluffy. Still came out good, and massaging the kale is the key. Next time I’ll use a bit more feta.

  16. User avatar Tahm Kench says:

I follow a low-carb diet, so this may not suit me. But it looks pretty!

But quinoa is high in carbs too! How is this low-carb? 🤔

  17. 5 stars
Massaging kale with salt is legit. I didn’t have feta so I used goat cheese and it still tasted great. Will repeat.

  18. User avatar ArabianNights says:

This is a nice weekday option, but kale salad always takes effort. Massaging helped, but I still prefer spinach. Would make again if I’m meal prepping.

Uhh, what even is quinoa? Is it like rice? 🤔

  26. User avatar dolly.pouros5 says:

    2 stars
This was way too salty for my taste. I think I added too much salt by mistake.

  27. 5 stars
Loved this! Massaging the kale really makes a difference—no bitterness. The lemon-garlic dressing is super bright. I added chickpeas once and it was even better.

  32. User avatar Falmer Nightprowler says:

    2 stars
I tried making this but it just didn’t come out right. The quinoa was mushy and the kale was too tough.

    1. User avatar azzie.hayes81 says:

      4 stars
Sorry to hear that! The quinoa can get mushy if it’s overcooked. Did you let it sit off the heat after cooking? That helps!

    2. User avatar tu.schmidt90 says:

      3 stars
Mushy? I thought quinoa was supposed to be fluffy! Maybe you cooked it too long? Just saying.

  33. 5 stars
This salad is amazing! The flavors are so fresh and vibrant. I loved the addition of feta!

    1. 5 stars
I agree! The feta really takes it to the next level. So good!

    2. User avatar horacio.sporer1970 says:

      2 stars
Eh, it’s just another salad. I think it could use some meat or something.

  34. 5 stars
This salad is delicious! The quinoa pairs so well with the kale. Definitely a keeper!

  35. User avatar britt.corwin15 says:

    2 stars
Quinoa needs like 30 min tho? Mine stayed crunchy after 15, so I had to simmer longer. Other than that the flavor is decent.

    1. User avatar kennith.leannon1991 says:

      5 stars
Yeah, that sounds pretty normal—quinoa timing can vary a lot by brand/rinse and how low your simmer really is. If it was crunchy at 15, you did the right thing simmering longer. 🙌

  36. User avatar Jefferson Gislason III says:

    1 star
I think I messed it up. My quinoa was mushy and the kale was too hard to chew.

  37. User avatar bernice.pacocha says:

    4 stars
1 clove garlic for all that? Seems under-seasoned. I ended up doubling the garlic and adding more lemon—way better that way.

  38. User avatar georgeanna.morar0 says:

    2 stars
Not bad, but I feel like it needs something crunchy—like toasted nuts or cucumber. Otherwise it’s kinda one-note.

    1. User avatar halflife4 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—kale + quinoa can feel a bit “meh” without crunch. I’d add toasted almonds/walnuts or even pepitas. Cucumber would be super fresh too.

  39. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

    4 stars
This is gonna be my go-to salad for summer! So healthy!

    1. User avatar lourie.johnson says:

      5 stars
Sounds amazing! I love anything with quinoa. Can’t wait to try it!

    2. 2 stars
Kale? Really? It’s kinda bitter isn’t it? I’ll stick with romaine.

  40. User avatar cheryl.fisher says:

    3 stars
I tried it and my quinoa came out a little mushy, maybe I overcooked it. Still tasty though—next time I’ll watch the simmer closer. The dressing is the star.

    1. User avatar Effrafax of Wug says:

      5 stars
That sounds exactly like what happens when it simmers a hair too long—15 minutes is a “watch it” time for sure. Glad the dressing still made it work!

    2. User avatar hiram.boehm43 says:

      3 stars
Mushy quinoa is usually from not rinsing or too much water, not just the timing. I would try 12-13 min and fluff it right away. Also kale can get rubbery if you don’t massage enough—did you do that step?

  41. 5 stars
Great recipe! I added some avocado and it really took it to the next level. Will make again!

  42. User avatar stephen.jakubowski says:

    2 stars
Not sure I get the whole kale-massage thing… I did it but the kale tasted kinda bitter anyway. Could be my kale was old? Idk.

  43. User avatar Charley Schulist III says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about massaging kale… but it actually worked. I did have to season while massaging, otherwise it tasted flat. Would make again!

    1. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

      4 stars
Wait… you have to salt it while massaging? I always just toss kale with the dressing, but maybe that’s why mine be tasting kinda bland. Gonna try your way 😅

    2. User avatar maria.hessel46 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—massaging kale is the difference between “tough” and “actually good.” Love that you seasoned it while massaging too.

  44. 4 stars
Had to Google what quinoa is… pretty weird name. But it was alright!

  45. User avatar guillermo.donnelly says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but I feel like it needs something more… maybe some nuts? 🤔

  46. 2 stars
Kale mushy? No thanks. Prefer mine crunchy.

  47. User avatar shanell.corkery30 says:

    5 stars
Yum! I added some nuts and avocado for extra flavor. Will make again!

  48. User avatar fredrick.bergnaum says:

Kale with quinoa? Why do people eat these things? I prefer burgers!

  49. 2 stars
Too many ingredients for me. I just want simple! But I guess it looked good.

  50. User avatar garrett.will says:

    4 stars
Easy to make! I didn’t have feta so used goat cheese instead.

  51. 5 stars
I made this for a potluck, and everyone loved it! I added some nuts for crunch.

    1. 2 stars
Kale? Really? I don’t get why people love it so much. It’s just… leafy. What’s with the hype?

    2. User avatar Eccentrica Gallumbits says:

      5 stars
That sounds amazing! Nuts are a great addition for texture. Definitely trying this next time!

  52. User avatar wanetta.funk says:

    2 stars
The garlic in the dressing was a little too punchy for me—like almost raw-strong. I’d reduce garlic or whisk it with the lemon longer so it mellows.

    1. User avatar august.daugherty says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—1 clove can be intense, especially if the garlic is fresh and really minced fine. I’ve started mincing a lot less (or grating) and it’s way better.

    2. User avatar Damien Pagac Sr. says:

      3 stars
Hm I liked it punchy tbh. Maybe you just needed more lemon/salt to balance? Also I whisk mine like 30 seconds only—does longer really mellow it?

  53. User avatar elza.lowe81 says:

    3 stars
I dunno, I think kale is overrated. Can I just use spinach instead?

  54. User avatar Aurelion Sol says:

    5 stars
This was actually way better than I expected. The lemon-garlic dressing makes the kale taste less bitter, and the quinoa texture is perfect.

  55. User avatar ricarda.cummerata says:

    5 stars
I made this for lunch and it actually held up in the fridge overnight—nice texture. The lemon-garlic dressing is the star.

  56. User avatar troy.cruickshank1988 says:

    3 stars
Just don’t understand how quinoa is good… it taste like nothing to me.

    1. User avatar Majin Vegeta says:

      4 stars
I get what you’re saying! Quinoa can be pretty bland on its own. Maybe try seasoning it more or adding some spices? It really helps bring out the flavor!

    2. User avatar tamisha.kerluke9 says:

      2 stars
Nah, I think it’s just not for everyone. My cousin loves cooking with quinoa, but I can’t stand it! Kale’s alright though, I guess.

Too many ingredients for a salad!!! I just want something simple.

Sooo simple! Perfect for a quick lunch. Will make again for sure.

Sounds delicious! Avocado is a great addition. Can’t wait to try it!

  68. 4 stars
I found the garlic a bit too strong raw. Next time I’ll mince it more finely or let it sit in the lemon juice for a few minutes first.

  69. User avatar tristan.trantow67 says:

    4 stars
I’m not usually a salad person, but I followed this and it turned out great. I massaged the kale longer than the recipe said—maybe 3-4 minutes—and it was super tender.

    1. User avatar clyde.beier20 says:

      3 stars
I tried it but my kale never got soft. maybe i didn’t salt it enough? also i think i put too much lemon—tasted kinda harsh lol. any tips?

    2. 5 stars
That’s awesome! Massaging kale is the real game-changer—3–4 minutes sounds about right for getting it that tender. How was the texture after refrigerating?

5 stars, highly recommend! Best salad for summer picnics!

I added avocado and toasted pine nuts and now it’s basically my new go-to bowl. The feta + lemon combo is perfection. 10/10 would recommend.

  72. User avatar clair.johnson60 says:

    4 stars
The quinoa part was easy, but I think my kale got a bit too soft? Still good though—just more “mushy” than I expected.

  73. 3 stars
Pretty good, but my quinoa ended up a little mushy. Not sure if I overcooked or didn’t rinse enough. Still tasty though, especially with the feta.

    1. User avatar silvia.legros19 says:

      4 stars
Hmm, mushy quinoa usually means it cooked a bit too long or needed a touch less water. I’d try 1 cup quinoa to 1.75 cups water next time, and definitely rinse well (even 30 seconds does help).

    2. User avatar agnes.bayer1986 says:

      4 stars
Maybe you cooked it too long? Mine is always fluffy at 15 min on low, but if the heat is higher than low it gets mushy fast. Also make sure it’s covered the whole time.

  74. 3 stars
I followed it pretty much exactly, but my quinoa came out a little mushy. Not sure if I over-simmered or needed less water. Flavor was still tasty though.

  75. 2 stars
I dunno, quinoa? Isn’t that like bird food? I tried it but didn’t like it much.

  76. User avatar miyoko.murray says:

    2 stars
I tried this and it was quite bland. Needs more flavor!

  77. User avatar fredric.kerluke says:

    5 stars
This is such a satisfying salad—love how the lemon + garlic makes the feta really pop. Massaging the kale actually does make a difference. Five stars!

  78. User avatar russ.veum54 says:

    5 stars
Delicious! My kids even ate it! <3

  79. User avatar Gag Halfrunt says:

    2 stars
Quinoa always clumps on me and I don’t know why. Mine wasn’t very fluffy, and the salad felt like more work than it’s worth. Still edible though.

    1. User avatar sharonda.stiedemann35 says:

      4 stars
I feel you—quinoa can get clumpy if it’s not rinsed well or if you cook it a bit too hot. I usually rinse until the water runs clear and fluff it with a fork right after it finishes. This salad does sound a little more fussy than it looks though.

  80. User avatar Jessie Stiedemann says:

    5 stars
This salad looks amazing! Can’t wait to try it. Kale is the best!
