Hanky Pankies

September 3, 2025

Hanky Pankies are a beloved appetizer that perfectly balances nostalgia and flavor. This retro party favorite has stood the test of time, remaining a staple at family gatherings, holiday spreads, and casual get-togethers. With their savory mix of sausage, melted cheese, and a hint of spice, all perched atop crisp party rye bread, these little bites pack a lot of flavor into a small package. Whether you’re hosting a cozy game night or a festive celebration, Hanky Pankies never fail to disappear quickly from the table.

Part of their enduring charm lies in their simplicity and versatility. This appetizer dates back decades, often found in vintage cookbooks and passed down through family recipe boxes. They evoke a sense of comfort, bringing back memories of cozy kitchens and lively parties. Hanky Pankies are a reminder that sometimes the best dishes are the ones that don’t need much fuss – just hearty ingredients and a warm oven to bring everything together.

Another reason they remain so popular is their adaptability. While traditional recipes stick to a sausage and cheese base, you can easily experiment with different flavors to suit your preferences or dietary needs. Swap out the type of sausage, add extra seasoning, or even play with different cheeses for a fresh twist. Their bite-sized form also makes them ideal for serving large groups, and they’re easy to prep ahead of time, which is always a bonus when entertaining.

Beyond their flavor and convenience, Hanky Pankies bring a sense of fun and nostalgia to the table. Their quirky name adds to their charm, often sparking conversations and laughter among guests. These savory bites feel like a warm hug in appetizer form, reminding us of why certain dishes become timeless classics.

Perfect for potlucks, game day spreads, or holiday parties, Hanky Pankies embody the spirit of sharing good food with good company. They may be simple, but they’re always a hit, proving that traditional favorites never go out of style.

Absolutely! I made these for my last party and they were a hit! Just don’t leave them in too long, or they’ll burn. Trust me, I learned the hard way!

Delicious but my oven didn’t cook it evenly. Had to flip halfway. Found it great tho!

Isn’t it kinda wrong to use processed cheese? Like, can’t we use real cheese? 🤔

    1. 4 stars
I get what you’re saying, but sometimes processed cheese just melts better! 🤷‍♀️ Plus, it’s easier for parties!

    2. User avatar shelba.stroman74 says:

Real cheese is good, but it can be pricey and not as gooey. I think it’s fine to use what’s easy! 😋

  5. User avatar Cruz Goldner says:

    4 stars
So easy to make! I just mixed everything in a bowl and skipped the bread. Still yum.

  6. 5 stars
These are amazing! I made them for a party and they were gone in minutes. Definitely a crowd-pleaser! 😍

    1. 5 stars
I totally agree! They’re so good and super easy to make. I love how you can switch up the ingredients too. 🍽️

I don’t get why people like these… they look kinda gross to me. 😕

  7. 5 stars
My kids love this! Perfect for game day snacks, we can’t get enough of ’em. 🍕

It’s okay, but I feel like there’s too much meat. Maybe cut the beef and add more spices?

    1. 2 stars
Less meat? Nah! It’s a meat dish! Just enjoy it as it is and stop tweaking classics!

    2. 5 stars
I think you’re spot on! A bit more spice could really elevate this. Maybe some cayenne or paprika would help?

I don’t get why people like these. The cheese looks weird and it’s too greasy for my taste.

    1. 3 stars
Weird cheese? It’s just Velveeta! It’s supposed to be gooey, that’s the whole point. Maybe you just need to try them at a party, they’re great with beer!

    2. User avatar florida.okon43 says:

      4 stars
I totally get what you mean! The greasy stuff is not for everyone. But you gotta admit, they can be super tasty at parties!

  11. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    4 stars
I don’t eat beef. Can you substitute it for more sausage?

    1. 3 stars
Idk if that will taste good, but you can try I guess. But sausage is different from beef.

    2. User avatar cherry.blanda says:

      5 stars
Sure! More sausage sounds perfect! Just make sure to balance the spices since sausage can be salty.

  12. 5 stars
So messy in the best way—those rye toasts came out perfectly bubbly. I used spicy sausage and it was a hit with everyone.

Took me a while to figure out the cheese part. Is Velveeta really cheese? Anyway, they were okay.

    1. User avatar Yooden Vranx says:

      3 stars
I dunno, I think Velveeta is cheese. Ain’t it just melted? But hey, if you didn’t love it, maybe try a diff cheese next time! 🧀

    2. User avatar terresa.price19 says:

      4 stars
Velveeta might not be cheese in a traditional sense, but it’s tasty! Glad you tried it anyway! 😊

  15. User avatar hailey.rath85 says:

    3 stars
Tried this, but it was too greasy for my taste. Maybe less meat next time?

    1. 4 stars
I totally get what you mean! I think cutting down on the meat could help a lot. I actually use a mix of veggies now; adds flavor without the grease!

  16. 5 stars
These were a hit at the party! Everyone loved them, thanks for the recipe!

    1. User avatar leonel.legros says:

      2 stars
I dunno, I made them once and then everyone got sick. Maybe too greasy?

    2. 5 stars
So glad to hear that! These are always a crowd-pleaser! 🎉

Soooo good! I could eat it every day. 😋

Honestly, doesn’t look that great. How can this even be a recipe? 😕

  19. 2 stars
Did anyone else try this with turkey sausage? It was a disaster, don’t recommend!

    1. 4 stars
I hear ya! Turkey sausage can be hit or miss. It’s just not the same as regular sausage. Stick with the beef next time!

  20. User avatar quinn.nader77 says:

Not gonna lie… I misread and put the cheese in before the meat was browned. It kind of clumped, but I stirred a lot and it worked out. Kinda messy, but good.

    1. User avatar elin.swift27 says:

      5 stars
Haha that’s still a win! Velveeta can be weird if it clumps, but as long as it melts through it’ll totally bind with the meat. Next time just brown first, but honestly “messy but good” is basically the success criteria.

  21. User avatar herbert.gusikowski2003 says:

    3 stars
Boring… Couldn’t we spice it up more? Like jalapeños or something? 🌶️🤷‍♂️

Sounds good, but isn’t processed cheese like super unhealthy? I think I’d rather make it with real cheese.

  23. User avatar bo.hodkiewicz62 says:

Never heard of Hanky Pankies before, is this a regional thing?

  24. User avatar angelo.bruen3 says:

It’s a big mess to clean up. And the party rye bread? Like, what even is that? Just use regular bread!!!

  25. 5 stars
Not gonna lie, 1 pound processed cheese sounds terrifying lol. But it melted smooth and made the topping rich. Would make again.

    1. 5 stars
Same here—processed cheese always feels a little sketchy at first, but once it melts it’s like instant comfort. Glad it worked out!

    2. User avatar joey.gerhold says:

      4 stars
I tried this with sharp cheddar once and it didn’t melt the same, so maybe the Velveeta matters. Also 10-12 minutes feels short but hey if it’s bubbly it’s done 😅

  26. 4 stars
Can I use turkey sausage instead? Trying to eat less fat. Sounds yummy!

    1. User avatar coretta.walsh89 says:

      5 stars
Turkey sausage should work fine! It might taste a bit different, but it’s a lighter option. Good luck!

  27. User avatar Barliman Butterbur says:

Can u use turkey instead of beef? Trying to make it a bit healthier.

Tried it at a friend’s house. It’s like a party in your mouth! So good! 😋
