Fried Mozzarella Sticks

July 7, 2025

Fried mozzarella sticks are a classic indulgence that never goes out of style. Golden, crispy on the outside, and gooey on the inside, they are the perfect combination of textures and flavors. Whether you’re preparing them for a party, game day, or simply as a treat for yourself, these homemade mozzarella sticks are sure to satisfy any craving.

To make the best mozzarella sticks, you start by cutting mozzarella cheese into thick, rectangular pieces. Then, each cheese stick is dipped in a seasoned flour mixture, coated in beaten eggs, and covered in a crunchy breadcrumb coating. For extra flavor, add some Italian seasoning, garlic powder, or grated Parmesan to the breadcrumbs. This ensures that each bite is bursting with flavor, while the cheese inside stays perfectly melted.

Once the sticks are coated, they’re ready for frying. The oil should be hot enough to create that perfect golden crust but not too hot to burn them quickly. Fry the mozzarella sticks until they’re crispy and brown, about 2-3 minutes. The key is to ensure that the cheese inside has melted just enough so it’s gooey but not oozing out completely.

The result? A deliciously crispy shell that gives way to a warm, melty cheese center. Serve your mozzarella sticks with a side of marinara sauce for dipping, or try a spicy ranch or garlic butter sauce for a fun twist. They’re perfect for snacking, appetizers, or even a fun addition to any meal.

Fried mozzarella sticks are a comfort food favorite that’s easy to make at home. With just a few simple ingredients, you can enjoy this cheesy treat fresh out of the fryer, making it the perfect snack for any occasion. Whether you enjoy them on their own or paired with a dipping sauce, these mozzarella sticks will surely be a hit at your next gathering.

375°F is tricky—my first batch was greasy. After I waited longer for the oil to truly get hot, they turned out much better.

I don’t really like breadcrumbs. Would it work to just fry them plain?

    1. User avatar cordelia.vandervort92 says:

      3 stars
Frying them plain sounds kinda weird! I think the coating is what makes them crispy and yummy. Maybe try a different coating instead?

    2. User avatar lorene.kulas23 says:

      4 stars
Why not? You could fry plain cheese, right? Just won’t be the same tho.

I don’t understand how frying them makes them cook? Doesn’t it just heat them up?

Aren’t mozzarella sticks supposed to be deep-fried? Seems too easy.

    1. 4 stars
Yeah, I thought they needed to be deep-fried too! But this seems like a quick way to do it. Might try it!

  12. User avatar Ryan Coke says:

  16. User avatar elyse.little67 says:

Not worth the effort! It was so much work for just some cheese sticks, plus I burned mine.

  17. User avatar geraldine.koch says:

    1 star
This isn’t real cooking. Just buy them frozen, it’s easier.

  18. User avatar Max Quordlepleen says:

    1 star
Why do you need to freeze them? Just fry and eat!

  19. 2 stars
Just a mess. Oil everywhere, and the coating fell off… not happy.

  20. User avatar Arthur Dent says:

375°F is key. The first batch I rushed and they were pale. Second batch at temp was golden in like 3 minutes like the recipe says.

    1. User avatar erma.tremblay56 says:

      3 stars
Hmm I dunno. Mine took like 6 minutes last time at 375 and still weren’t “golden” really… maybe my breadcrumbs were thicker? Also I forgot to freeze bc I was hungry lol, could be that.

    2. User avatar Blade Brothers says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—375°F is the make-or-break. I tried higher once and they browned too fast but the inside was still meh. Frozen 10 min helps a lot too.

  21. User avatar josh.reynolds says:

Not bad! My hubby isn’t a fan of fried stuff but he gobbled them up! Will make again.

Fried stuff is unhealthy tho… but whatever works for ya! Just don’t do it too much!

  22. User avatar candra.purdy94 says:

    2 stars
They weren’t that great, my cheese leaked out when frying… whats up with that?

    1. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

      4 stars
Maybe you didn’t freeze them long enough? That can help keep the cheese from leaking out.

  23. User avatar Isiah Dach DVM says:

Mozzarella sticks? More like ghost sticks! They vanished too quick. 😂

    1. 5 stars
Haha, I feel you! They never last long around here either. Got any tips to make them a bit slower to disappear? 😂

    2. User avatar halflife4 says:

      4 stars
Ghost sticks? More like a snack attack! They sure don’t stick around when my friends are over, that’s for sure. 😂

  24. User avatar valentine.kerluke34 says:

    5 stars
Fried cheese?! Yes plz! So easy and delicious. Will make again for sure.

  25. 4 stars
Really good, but my oil temp dropped a bit so they took closer to 4 minutes. Still delicious though—next time I’ll fry in smaller batches.

  26. User avatar mikki.lueilwitz10 says:

    5 stars
Wow, these are the best! Made them for a party and they disappeared in minutes!

  27. User avatar Spriggan Matron says:

These mozzarella sticks were a total hit at my party! Everyone loved them and they were gone in minutes. Will definitely make again!

  28. User avatar Rito Chieftain says:

    2 stars
Too much oil! Messy kitchen after, but tasty.

  29. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have oregano, so I used basil. Still turned out great!

  30. User avatar Elenor Goyette says:

    4 stars
Followed the steps exactly and the breading stayed put (love that). Freezing for 10 minutes helped a lot. Easy snack.

    1. User avatar Cornell Von DDS says:

      5 stars
Love hearing that! Freezing really is the secret—makes the crust stay put. 🍟🧀

  31. User avatar Shadout Mapes says:

    2 stars
Why not just buy them? Seems like a lot of work for cheese.

  32. User avatar spencer.zemlak1993 says:

    1 star
I can’t belive yall eat this shit, just go buy them. Seriously.

  33. User avatar robert.tillman2003 says:

    5 stars
The garlic powder + oregano combo is legit. I also added a pinch of chili flakes and it leveled up. Crunch factor is real.

    1. User avatar arletta.hahn23 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—oregano + garlic powder makes the breadcrumb coating way better. 😄 Chili flakes is such a good add too.

  34. 5 stars
Really good recipe, but I added some chili flakes for extra kick and it was amazing! Highly recommend trying that.

    1. User avatar marian.wyman1950 says:

      5 stars
Chili flakes, huh? That sounds interesting! I might have to try that next time. Thanks for the tip!

  35. User avatar Diamond Gulgowski says:

    3 stars
Mine didn’t taste “oregano-y” at all. I double-checked the amounts and everything seems right, so not sure what happened. Crunch was okay though.

    1. User avatar Prostetnic Vogon Kwaltz says:

      4 stars
Hmm that’s odd—1 tsp oregano for 2 cups breadcrumbs should come through. Maybe your oregano is super old or not very aromatic? Fresh-smelling dried herbs make a big difference.

    2. User avatar magdalena.ruecker says:

      3 stars
Mine was the same way—barely any oregano taste. I used the exact recipe too, so I’m thinking the breadcrumbs flavor drowned it out? Next time I’ll mix more oregano into the crumbs.

  36. 5 stars
5 stars all the way! My kids can’t get enough, thank you for sharing this!

  37. 3 stars
I followed the steps and they browned fast, but mine were a little greasy. Maybe my oil wasn’t hot enough? Still delicious with marinara.

  38. User avatar karina.feeney64 says:

    5 stars
These came out PERFECTLY crispy on the outside and melty inside. I didn’t even need extra seasoning—marinara was spot on. Will make again!

  39. User avatar gilberte.morar67 says:

    5 stars
I used panko instead of breadcrumbs and it still worked. Honestly better crunch than most places.

  40. User avatar renato.bruen says:

    5 stars
Mozzarella sticks are my favorite snack! 😀 10/10 recommend!

  41. 2 stars
Followed the instructions but it didn’t turn out as good as expected. Any tips for better frying?

  42. User avatar kasie.west68 says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was worried about the 8 sticks portion, but it fried up perfectly. Tastes like restaurant stuff.

  43. User avatar Genghis Khan says:

    5 stars
These were amazing! My kids loved them!

  44. User avatar Mystic Gohan says:

    5 stars
Wow. So easy. I served these at a party and everyone kept asking for the recipe. Will make again.

    1. User avatar brendon.tremblay2005 says:

      3 stars
Hm sounds good but I had a problem last time—my cheese leaked out. Do you think freezing the 10 minutes is enough? Also can I bake instead of frying?

    2. User avatar justina.beatty says:

      5 stars
Love this—super clear steps. I made them for game night and they vanished fast 😂 Crispy outside, melty inside!

  45. 5 stars
Love this recipe! Made a big batch for the game night!

Yesss! Fried cheese is the best! Can’t wait to try this! 🍽️

  47. User avatar travis.spinka says:

    3 stars
Not sure about the freezing part. Just seems extra, you know?

  48. User avatar Heimerdinger says:

    2 stars
Recipe looks simple, but I burnt my sticks. Overcooked, I guess.

  49. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    4 stars
Can I use parmesan instead of mozzarella?

  50. User avatar stacey.kshlerin4 says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but I wish there was more parmesan or something in the crumbs. Breadcrumbs alone felt a little plain.

    1. User avatar ALTplusF4 says:

      5 stars
Yeah I get what you mean—2 cups breadcrumbs can totally drown out the flavor. Next time I’d mix in extra parm (or even grated pecorino) into the crumb mix. Game changer.

  51. User avatar Vroomfondel says:

    3 stars
I don’t get it. How can you fry cheese? Sounds weird but I guess it works? 🤷‍♂️

  52. 2 stars
375°F is way too precise, lol. I eyeballed it and they turned dark before the cheese got melty. Next time I’ll use a thermometer.

  53. User avatar francisco.schmeler says:

    4 stars
Yum! I’m making these for game night! Who needs frozen when you can make them yourself?

  54. User avatar Falmer Nightprowler says:

    5 stars
These turned out amazing! So cheesy and crispy! Kids loved them! 😍

  55. User avatar rich.landlord says:

    4 stars
Love the seasoning. Garlic powder + oregano with marinara is such a vibe. Great quick snack.

  56. User avatar stuart.ankunding94 says:

    2 stars
This is too much oil! Can’t you just bake them? Less messy I mean.

  57. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    3 stars
Just tried making these but they were overcooked 😬. Timing is everything!

  58. User avatar yetta.stiedemann47 says:

    4 stars
3 minutes feels too short to me… but it was actually right. Still crispy after a few bites, not soggy.

  59. User avatar bernadine.conroy says:

    2 stars
My coating kept sliding off (maybe I pressed too lightly?). I’ll try egg/flour thicker next time.

  60. User avatar galen.lebsack65 says:

    3 stars
I thought these would be difficult to make but it was super easy. However, my cheese didn’t melt well, maybe I overcooked them?

  61. User avatar orpha.leuschke says:

    5 stars
One word: yum. The texture was so satisfying. I served with ranch bc I’m weird like that and it worked!

  62. User avatar andres.jakubowski98 says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was worried about the cheese leaking, but it mostly didn’t. I might’ve pressed a bit too hard on the breadcrumbs though—still tasty and super snackable.

    1. User avatar Mr. Edwin Emard says:

      5 stars
Totally get that fear 😂 The freeze step really helps—pressing too hard can definitely pack the crumbs and make them less crispy, but hey if it’s still crunchy and not too messy, that’s a win.

  63. User avatar kip.rohan32 says:

    3 stars
Got all ingredients but the oil. What can I substitute it with?

  64. 3 stars
Followed it exactly, but mine leaked a bit. Next time I’ll freeze longer than 10 minutes—maybe my oil temp was off.

  65. User avatar claude.weimann says:

    4 stars
I found this recipe really easy to follow. My friends loved the cheesiness!

  66. User avatar jonathon.grant1981 says:

    3 stars
Is it supposed to be 375°F? That sounds crazy hot. I guess just watch them closely.

  67. User avatar kip.stark1971 says:

    5 stars
Looove mozzarella sticks! So easy to make right at home, thanks for sharing!

    1. User avatar Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz says:

      5 stars
I know right?! They’re the best snack ever, thanks for posting this recipe!

  68. User avatar merlyn.hamill47 says:

    5 stars
Yum, just yum. Perfect snack while binge-watching! 🍿

  69. User avatar tamala.oconnell says:

    4 stars
I’m not sure why the recipe says cut sticks in half—seemed like extra work. But yeah, cooking evenly helped so I get it.

    1. User avatar jacqualine.hamill2000 says:

      4 stars
Honestly I thought cutting them in half was just to make it look fancier 😅 but you’re right—thinner pieces fry more evenly. 3 minutes still sounds about right too.

    2. User avatar rickie.white6 says:

      4 stars
Nah, I skipped the halving once and they were all melty in weird spots. But hey, if freezing helps, maybe it would’ve been fine. Next time I’ll follow the cut sticks part.

  70. User avatar Spriggan Earth Mother says:

    5 stars
These came out super crispy and the cheese pull was real. I didn’t even have to wait long before they started disappearing 😅

  71. User avatar ardis.baumbach says:

    5 stars
These came out perfectly crispy on the outside and stretchy inside—exactly what I wanted. Freezing for 10 minutes really helped, I think. Used a little extra garlic powder and it was great.

  72. User avatar Lennie Schmidt says:

    2 stars
I tried this once and my breading kept falling off. I think the freeze time should be longer than 10 minutes, honestly. But the idea is good!

    1. 4 stars
My breading fell off too the first time. I think I rushed the freezing + the oil was maybe not hot enough. Like if it’s below 375°F the cheese starts melting before the crust sets. Try keeping the oil consistent!

    2. User avatar modesta.schowalter says:

      5 stars
I totally get that—10 minutes is often too short. I usually freeze mine 20–30 minutes (and I keep everything cold) so the coating stays put. Also patting the crumbs on a bit harder helps.

  73. User avatar lorina.erdman58 says:

    3 stars
Mine oozed out anyway 😩 I think my mozzarella was too soft/old. The flavor was great, just not the shape. Still ate them all.
