Fried Ice Cream

December 4, 2024

Fried ice cream is a fun and indulgent dessert that combines the creamy coldness of ice cream with a crispy, warm exterior. It’s a show-stopping treat often served in Mexican restaurants, offering a unique contrast of textures and flavors that’s sure to impress anyone with a sweet tooth.

The magic of fried ice cream comes from the way it’s prepared. A scoop of your favorite ice cream, usually vanilla, chocolate, or cinnamon, is frozen until firm. Once it’s solid, the ice cream is coated with a crunchy layer, often made from crushed cornflakes, breadcrumbs, or even crushed cereal like Frosted Flakes. Some recipes add a sprinkle of cinnamon or a touch of sugar to the coating for extra flavor.

Once the ice cream is fully coated, it’s quickly deep-fried in hot oil for just a few seconds. This rapid frying process gives the outer coating a golden, crispy texture while leaving the inside cool and creamy. The result is a mouthwatering contrast between the hot, crunchy outside and the cold, creamy ice cream inside.

This ice cream typically can be served with a drizzle of honey, chocolate syrup, or caramel sauce, and sometimes topped with whipped cream, sprinkles, or a cherry for a festive touch. The combination of hot and cold, sweet and crunchy, is a perfect indulgence, making this dessert a crowd-pleaser at any occasion.

While it sounds complicated, fried ice cream is surprisingly easy to make at home. You just need to ensure the ice cream is frozen solid before frying it, as this will help prevent it from melting too quickly. You can even experiment with different coatings or ice cream flavors to create your own twist on this classic dessert.

Whether you’re looking to impress guests or just want a fun treat to enjoy on a special occasion, this is a deliciously unique dessert that brings together two of everyone’s favorite things – ice cream and fried food.

This is such a crazy idea! I can’t believe it actually works. My kids loved it! Definitely a 5 star!

Tried this and it was a complete disaster! The ice cream melted way too fast. What a mess!

Wow, I never thought of frying ice cream! This sounds amazing! Can’t wait to try it.

    1. 2 stars
Frying ice cream? I dunno, sounds kinda messy… What if it melts?

    2. User avatar Beregond says:

      5 stars
This is gonna be so good! I might add some chocolate chips to the mix too.

  4. 4 stars
The ingredient list says “1 egg egg” which made me laugh, but I’m assuming it just means 1 beaten egg. Still, great recipe and pretty foolproof if you’re quick.

  5. User avatar allie.cruickshank says:

    3 stars
It was ok, but a bit messy. Next time, I’ll try less oil.

    1. User avatar wan.morissette46 says:

      4 stars
Less oil sounds like a good idea! It can get real drippy otherwise. Hope the next attempt is better!

    2. User avatar brian.breitenberg55 says:

I still don’t get how ice cream can be fried. Seems kinda weird, right? But maybe I’ll try it once!

  6. User avatar dexter.goldner87 says:

    4 stars
I love the idea, but 10-15 seconds might be too long depending on your oil depth and pan. Still, the cinnamon in the crumbs would taste amazing.

  7. User avatar larissa.marvin16 says:

    4 stars
Followed it pretty closely, except I used cinnamon anyway and it was actually great. Crunchy coating + cold center is unreal.

    1. User avatar aide.kohler76 says:

      4 stars
I mean… cinnamon? lol. But if you say it was great I’ll believe it. Did you put cinnamon in only the cornflakes mix or also into the egg? Also 10-15 seconds feels so short—mine always softens fast.

    2. User avatar eddie.mante97 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—adding cinnamon is one of those small tweaks that makes it taste way more “bakery” and less plain. Crunchy outside with cold center is the whole magic.

  8. 5 stars
This is such a fun recipe! It’s perfect for a summer party. My kids loved it!

  9. User avatar edie.jacobi says:

    5 stars
This is such a fun dessert idea—crispy outside and still cold inside. I did it a few days ago and everyone went wild for it. The quick fry step is key!

  10. User avatar cherise.okeefe says:

    4 stars
Super easy to make! I used rice krispies instead of cornflakes and it turned out great! Yum!

  11. 5 stars
Omg honey drizzle at the end?? That’s my love language. Crunchy outside, cold inside—yes yes yes.

    1. User avatar alfredo.spencer3 says:

      5 stars
Yesss! Honey + that crunchy shell is elite. I’m totally making this—10-15 seconds sounds perfect so the inside stays cold 😄

    2. 3 stars
Wait, fried ice cream with cornflakes?? I feel like the coating might get soggy fast… but I guess the super-hot oil + quick fry helps. Still, I’d be scared of it melting in the egg.

  12. User avatar josef.romaguera2019 says:

    5 stars
So good. Actually better than I thought it would be. Everyone asked for the recipe.

  27. User avatar dwayne.jaskolski says:

Quick and easy! But I think I put too much cinnamon. Next time I’ll be more careful.

    1. 4 stars
I love fried ice cream! But yeah, too much cinnamon can really overpower it. I usually use just a pinch. Glad you enjoyed it overall!

  28. 5 stars
I tried this and it was sooo good! Who knew it would work out!

  29. User avatar rachele.schoen says:

    4 stars
Loved the idea, but I wish it said how to keep the ice cream from getting too warm while breading. Also my coating kept falling off a bit—maybe I didn’t freeze long enough.

  30. User avatar iliana.kiehn60 says:

    3 stars
Fried? Ice cream? Sounds like a heart attack but I’ll try it anyways.

OMG this is so good! Just made it for my kids and they loved it. Will be a regular treat now!

    1. 5 stars
That’s awesome! My kids love it too! I added some chocolate syrup and nuts on top. Yum!

    2. 2 stars
Fried ice cream? Isn’t that messy? Wouldn’t the ice cream just melt? Seems risky!

  37. 3 stars
I followd all steps.. but my ice creeam melt before I fry it!!!! Now I got slush! What did I do wrong?

  38. User avatar russ.treutel says:

    4 stars
Tastes great, but it feels like a lot of work for one scoop. Also frying ice cream is kinda wild to me… but my kids devoured it, so I guess I’m wrong.

  39. 5 stars
Delicious and so crunchy! But I didn’t have cornflakes, so I used crispy rice cereal. It still worked!

  40. User avatar augustus.wintheiser33 says:

    4 stars
Made this for my kids, they loved it! It’s messy, but worth it. 👍

  41. 2 stars
10-15 seconds is so short 😅 I’m scared I’ll undercook it or overcook it. I ended up doing like 30 seconds once and it basically became fried ice cream mush.

  42. User avatar Ruthanne Graham says:

    4 stars
Looks legit. Also, you wrote ‘1 egg egg’—is that a typo or double eggs? I’m guessing it’s just one.

  43. User avatar hermila.ruecker33 says:

    3 stars
This sounds good but isn’t ice cream already cold? How does frying it work with science? Like the hot and cold?

  44. User avatar kandi.daugherty95 says:

    2 stars
This is just too weird. Fried ice cream? How does that even work? I’m skeptical.

  45. User avatar rivka.heidenreich2003 says:

    3 stars
okay but how long do you freeze the ice cream? I might forget and it’ll all melt!

  46. User avatar lindy.hermann9 says:

    1 star
Eh, not for me. Tried it at a fair once and thought it was too sweet.

    1. 4 stars
I get that! Fried ice cream can be way too sweet for some people, but I love it! Maybe try a less sweet topping next time?

  47. User avatar Trillian says:

    5 stars
YESS!!! This is the best thing I’ve ever made! Thanks for sharin this recipe, it’s a game changer!

  48. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

This was ridiculously fun to make. I worked fast like the instructions said and it came out golden and crunchy without melting into sadness. Drizzled honey on top—10/10.

  49. 5 stars
    5 stars. sooo good!!!

  50. User avatar Mohammed Kozey Sr. says:

    2 stars
Not gonna lie, I’m skeptical about frying ice cream. The first attempt failed, coating slipped off, maybe because my ice cream wasn’t hard enough.

    1. User avatar Chaurus Hunter says:

      5 stars
Totally get your skepticism—frying ice cream is kinda “blink and you miss it.” If the coating slipped, it’s usually because the ice cream wasn’t rock-hard *or* you didn’t refreeze between steps. I’d freeze the coated ball again (like 10–20 min) after the first egg/cornflake layer, then do the second coating and fry immediately. Also make sure your oil is really at 375°F before frying—if it’s cooler, the ice cream starts melting too fast.

  51. User avatar tressie.moore20 says:

    3 stars
Not what I expected. The ice cream melted too fast. Maybe I didn’t freeze it long enough.

  52. 4 stars
Such a fun idea! I made it for a party and everyone was so impressed. Definitely a keeper!

  53. User avatar Eddie the Computer says:

    2 stars
Is this even a real dessert? Seems too complicated for me. 😕

  54. User avatar felisha.sauer57 says:

    2 stars
Not my favorite… the egg made it kinda soggy. Maybe I did it wrong?

    1. User avatar ArabianNights says:

      3 stars
I dunno, this is how it’s done! But you could’ve maybe messed up the frying, who knows.

    2. User avatar wilford.kirlin1 says:

      4 stars
I think the egg is what gives it that crunch! Maybe try frying it less time? It has to be super quick.

  55. User avatar nita.becker10 says:

    3 stars
Fried ice cream, who knew? I prefer it plain, but this was kinda fun. Not sure I’d do it again tho.

  56. User avatar tyree.streich89 says:

    2 stars
Can someone please explain why the ice cream doesn’t just turn into soup? Mine did!

  57. User avatar allen.hyatt71 says:

    3 stars
Fried ice cream is from Mexico, right? I heard that somewhere, not sure. Sounds funny.

  58. 4 stars
Cornflakes worked way better than I expected. Cinnamon in the crumb mix is a nice touch. I served with honey and it was dangerously good.

  59. User avatar eugene.christiansen61 says:

    1 star
Fried ice cream? Is that even a real thing? Sounds weird.

    1. User avatar maxima.schimmel7 says:

      4 stars
Yeah, it’s a real thing! It’s like a fun dessert, you should definitely try it before judging!

5 stars! I added some sprinkles too! Everyone loved it ❤️

    1. User avatar felipe.hettinger1951 says:

      5 stars
Sounds amazing! I never thought about adding sprinkles, great idea! 🌈

  61. User avatar ira.senger says:

    4 stars
Actually pretty easy if you prep everything first. I used crushed cornflakes + egg like the instructions, and it came out golden in no time. Would totally make again.

    1. User avatar ryan.kirlin40 says:

      2 stars
Sounds good but isn’t it kinda risky frying ice cream? Like it melts instantly—mine usually turns into sad soup lol. Maybe I’m not freezing it long enough?

    2. User avatar nick.renner67 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—mise en place makes this so much easier. I tried it once and it was way less stressful than I expected. Golden in seconds is the best part 😄

  62. User avatar randy.rippin1982 says:

    4 stars
This is like dessert on training wheels. Easy ingredients, fun process. But please be careful with the oil—frying something frozen feels a little sketchy the first time.

  63. 3 stars
375°F sounds right, but I don’t have a thermometer. I just heated until it looked shimmery—results were… mixed. Still tasty though.

  64. 5 stars
OMG, this is amazing! I added some sprinkles on top and it took it to another level! Yum!

  65. User avatar lowell.emard1989 says:

    4 stars
I added chocolate syrup and honey and it was sweet-sweet. Could be too much for some people, but I loved it.

  66. User avatar elvin.schimmel says:

    4 stars
I tried this and it worked… mostly. Mine started melting a bit before frying, so I think freezing hard longer than “until very hard” would help. Still delicious though.

  67. User avatar wilton.witting73 says:

    3 stars
Okay but the ingredient list is confusing? Like ‘1 egg egg’ lol. Also do you really need a full cup of oil? I used less and it still worked, so maybe not.

  68. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    3 stars
Bold to call it fried ice cream like it’s easy lol. Between freezing, coating, and frying fast… that’s a lot of work for dessert.

  69. User avatar troy.padberg53 says:

    4 stars
I’m skeptical about the timing, but 10–15 seconds actually worked for me. I used a thermometer and the oil stayed around 190°C. Texture was perfect: crispy outside, cold inside.

    1. User avatar enoch.ebert88 says:

      5 stars
Totally believe it. I also stopped using guesses and went by thermometer—when the oil is ~190°C it fries insanely fast. If you go longer than that, it turns into a melted mess.

    2. User avatar Normand Dooley says:

      3 stars
I’m not sure about 10–15 seconds. Mine browned super fast but the inside was kinda like… milk soup, lol. Maybe my coating wasn’t thick enough? Also my oil temp ran hot maybe. Still tasty though.

  70. 5 stars
Fried ice cream is a classic! Always reminds me of my childhood fairs. Yummy!

    1. User avatar aide.schuppe says:

      2 stars
Fried ice cream? Sounds weird to me. How can ice cream not melt when you fry it?

    2. 5 stars
I remember having this at the carnival! It’s so fun to make at home too. Can’t wait to try!

  71. User avatar Frost Atronach says:

    1 star
    Fried… ice cream? Blasphemy! 😡

  72. User avatar calista.corwin1962 says:

    3 stars
I tried this but my ice cream melted immediately after coating… maybe my oil wasn’t hot enough? Also, 375°F felt hard to hit at home.

  73. 3 stars
Pretty darn good, but why not just eat ice cream? Seems like too much trouble.

  74. 5 stars
This is such a fun dessert—crispy outside and cold inside really does the trick. The 10–15 seconds is key; I almost overdid mine and it started to melt.

  75. User avatar Effrafax of Wug says:

    2 stars
I tried this but it didn’t work. The ice cream just melted too fast! 🙁

    1. User avatar chong.reilly19 says:

      4 stars
It sounds like the ice cream wasn’t frozen hard enough. You really gotta make sure it’s super solid before frying! Don’t lose hope, just try again!

  76. 5 stars
Cornflakes are genius here. I’m surprised it works without more baking—10-15 seconds is basically nothing, but it hits.

  77. 3 stars
I think the oil temp was off. It browned too fast and the inside was kinda soft. Still edible, just not the dramatic contrast I wanted.

    1. User avatar na.dubuque1979 says:

      4 stars
Yeah that sounds like the oil was running hot or the coating got too much color before the inside had time to firm up. Next time try keeping the oil closer to 375°F and use a thermometer—also freeze the ball longer and don’t fry more than a couple at a time so the temp doesn’t drop/rise a lot.

  78. User avatar Eccentrica Gallumbits says:

    5 stars
This is so fun! I never thought to fry ice cream. Can’t wait to try it!

    1. 5 stars
That sounds amazing! I’ve never heard of frying ice cream either but I’ll definitely try it!

  79. 2 stars
This is the weirdest recipe ever! Fried ice cream? Really??

  80. User avatar christie.jenkins2004 says:

    5 stars
This sounds dangerously delicious. The double cornflake + egg coating is such a smart move—golden in seconds is exactly right for fried ice cream. I’ll definitely try it.

  81. 3 stars
How does it not melt? I wanna see someone make this… the science behind it, you know?

  82. User avatar tammy.labadie says:

    5 stars
My kids loved it! Perfect for a summer treat. We drizzled with chocolate sauce, yum!

  83. User avatar Gurney Halleck says:

This is sooo good! Never thought fried ice cream was a thing. Thanks for the recipe!

    1. User avatar joe_banana says:

Fried ice cream is amazing! I tried this recipe last night and it was a hit with my family. Definitely making it again!

    2. User avatar jamaal.jakubowski24 says:

      2 stars
I dunno, fried ice cream sounds kinda strange. Isn’t the ice cream just gonna melt?

  84. User avatar austin.labadie85 says:

    1 star
Why would anyone fry ice cream? Seems wrong. Just eat it cold like normal.

  85. User avatar erasmo.murphy55 says:

    3 stars
Mine stuck to the pan a bit because the ice cream wasn’t frozen solid enough. Next time I’ll freeze longer. Still tasted good though—like a churro-meets-ice-cream situation.

  86. 3 stars
The recipe says 1 egg, but I used more batter-ish egg and it seemed thicker. I think it’s okay to eyeball? Mine looked less “golden brown” and more “toasty beige,” lol.

  87. User avatar Lisa Neucar says:

    3 stars
Cornflakes are kinda sweet already, so maybe skip extra cinnamon? Otherwise it might be too much. But still, it’s fun.

  88. User avatar olen.quitzon says:

    3 stars
Do you really need the egg? I have allergies and would like to skip it.

    1. 3 stars
I dunno, but I think the egg helps it stick? But if you have allergies, better safe than sorry! Maybe try using a bit of honey or something instead?

    2. User avatar richie.quigley44 says:

      5 stars
You can definitely skip the egg! Just make sure to coat it well with the cornflakes. It might not stick as much, but it’ll still be tasty!

  89. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

    5 stars
Cornflakes turned into this crunchy shell, and the egg helped a lot. I added a little extra cinnamon and it was amazing. Next time I’ll make smaller balls for more even frying.

  90. User avatar Lumberjack says:

    4 stars
The steps are clear. I did something similar once but used crushed cookies instead of cornflakes—this version sounds more crunchy. Rating would be 5 if it included chocolate syrup in the ingredients.

I tried it with cinnamon and it tasted kinda like cereal ice cream, which was good. But 375°F felt high? Mine browned too fast and I panicked and pulled it early.

375°F does sound scary at first, but the trick is SUPER fast frying—like 10–15 seconds. If it browned right away, your oil might’ve been hotter than 375 or your coating was a bit thinner. Next time try chilling the ice cream longer and make sure it’s fully encased.

I think you messed up the egg part? Like if the egg wasn’t mixed right, the cornflakes fall off and then it browns too quick. Also 375 is definitely too hot in my opinion 😅 I’d do 325 and fry longer… unless the ice cream melts, which it will lol.

The oil temp is important, but I’m not buying 375°F on vibes. I don’t have a thermometer. Can I eyeball it? Please say yes.

    1. 2 stars
I’d say yes, just heat it till it looks shimmery and kinda wavy. No thermometer? Totally vibes-based lol. 375°F is about when it starts smoking a little at the edges—don’t burn it.

You *can* eyeball it, but it’s risky. If the oil isn’t hot enough, the coating absorbs oil and gets soggy. Without a thermometer, do a quick test: toss in a tiny bit of cornflake— it should sizzle right away and brown quickly within a second or two.

This is such a fun “wow” dessert. The quick fry timing really matters—mine almost melted when I hesitated, but still tasted amazing.

Mine melted too, but I think I waited too long after the egg step 😅 Next time I’ll do it faster. Also, do you mean 10–15 seconds total or per side? I did it like one side and it felt kinda pale.

    2. User avatar parker.labadie10 says:

Yes!! The timing is everything. I always set a timer because the second you pause it starts to soften—still delicious though. Love the crunchy double coating.

  94. 5 stars
Cornflakes are kinda genius for this. I didn’t even add cinnamon, and it still had a sweet crunch. The double coating step matters—no argument.

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree—cornflakes have that sweet-y crunch and they brown fast. I started doing the double coat after my first try went bare. Makes a big difference!

I tried it once with cornflakes but my coating slid off 😭 maybe I didn’t freeze it hard enough. Also 10-15 seconds feels scary—won’t it melt inside? I wanna believe tho.

Lol my cornflakes got soggy. i guess i waited too long before frying. still tasted nice tho

I tried a different recipe and failed because I didn’t freeze long enough. This one says freeze until very hard—good! I think that’s the key.

I think this is a great idea! Wish I knew about this sooner. Lookin forward to making it.

  98. 5 stars
Okay this sounds dangerously good 😅 The double cornflake + egg coating is exactly what I wanted—crunchy outside, cold center. I’d drizzle chocolate for sure.

Wait, 375°F for only 10-15 seconds?? Mine melted instantly. I followed it exactly but maybe my oil was not hot enough? Either way, sad result 😭

Honestly sounds like a lot of work for 1 scoop of ice cream, but I have to admit it looks amazing. Worth it for special occasions.

I tried something like this—mine melted fast though 😅. The egg coating helps, but I think you *really* have to freeze the ball longer and fry super quick. Also, is it 375°F the whole time? Mine was more like 350 and it wasn’t golden.

I made these and they tasted like cinnamon cereal with ice cream—kinda nostalgic. But the coating fell off a little when I ate them.

Aww that’s such a specific (and honestly perfect) description—cinnamon cereal + ice cream sounds amazing. The coating falling off can happen if the ice cream isn’t super frozen or if the fry time is a hair too long/short. Did you freeze it until rock-hard and work quickly after coating?

I’m skeptical. Fried ice cream sounds like a meme, not real food. Like… how can it stay cold with hot oil? Mine melted the second I looked at it.

375°F for 10-15 seconds is so fast I’m skeptical it’ll actually set. Like, won’t the coating just slide off? Maybe my oil temp was off but mine didn’t look “golden” at all.

  105. User avatar nicki.hansen77 says:

I don’t get why you need to freeze it until very hard—wouldn’t it just fry anyway? Mine spread a bit, so I guess the freezing matters.

    1. User avatar dewey.maggio31 says:

      5 stars
I think the super-hard freeze is so it doesn’t melt the second it hits the oil. If it’s not frozen solid, the coating heats but the ice cream starts turning liquid inside and then it kind of “runs” and spreads.

  106. User avatar jeffery.ryan says:

Wait… do you really heat oil to 375°F and fry for 15 seconds without melting the ice cream? Mine would turn into soup 😅

    1. 5 stars
Yep—fast is the key 😄 Keep the oil at 375°F and make sure the ice cream is *super* frozen. The thick coating insulates it, so it doesn’t have time to melt into soup in just ~10–15 seconds.

The egg step helps so much with sticking. I double-coated like the recipe and it turned out super golden. My kids went feral lol.

    1. User avatar ashley.kuphal says:

Yes! That egg double-coat is the magic for me too—keeps it from melting into sadness. 😄

  108. 4 stars
Mine didn’t stay golden for long, it got a little soggy fast. Next time I’ll make the coating thicker and fry closer to 10 seconds like you said.

Not gonna lie, I burned one batch. I didn’t heat the oil to the right temp and the coating went dark immediately. But the second try at 375°F was way better.

    1. User avatar celestine.wisoky31 says:

      5 stars
Oh nooo, but that’s actually super relatable 😅 Dark that fast usually means the oil was too hot or the coating didn’t have time to set. Nice recovery on the 375°F though!

    2. 3 stars
375°F is like, pretty specific… I always forget and just eyeball it. I think mine might’ve been too low/high because the coating turned soggy instead of crisp. Still tasty, just not as “golden” 😂

Way too much work for a quick dessert in my opinion. Also, 1 cup oil feels like a guess—mine barely covered anything.
