French Onion Dip

September 10, 2024

French onion dip is a timeless crowd-pleaser, known for its rich, creamy texture and savory onion flavor. Whether served at a party, a family gathering, or as a snack for movie night, this dip is always a hit. Made with simple ingredients, it’s both easy to prepare and incredibly delicious. The combination of caramelized onions, sour cream, and a touch of seasoning creates a dip that is indulgent and satisfying, perfect for pairing with chips, crackers, or fresh veggies.

What sets French onion dip apart is the depth of flavor provided by the onions. While many versions of the dip use powdered onion soup mix, making the dip from scratch with caramelized onions takes it to the next level. Slow-cooked onions develop a rich, sweet flavor that adds complexity to the dip, giving it that signature savory taste. Once the onions are caramelized, they are mixed with sour cream and mayonnaise, creating a creamy base that perfectly complements the sweet and savory onions. A dash of garlic powder, salt, and pepper helps round out the flavors, and a little lemon juice or vinegar adds a subtle tang to balance the richness.

One of the best things about French onion dip is how easy it is to make. It requires minimal effort and time but delivers maximum flavor. The onions need to be caramelized slowly over low heat to bring out their natural sweetness, but once they’re done, the rest of the dip comes together in a matter of minutes. For added texture and flavor, you can sprinkle fresh herbs like chives or parsley on top.

French onion dip is a versatile snack that can be served with a variety of dipping options. Classic potato chips are a favorite, but you can also pair the dip with sliced baguette, crackers, or even vegetable sticks like carrots and celery for a lighter option. It’s also great as a topping for baked potatoes or roasted vegetables, adding extra creaminess and flavor to any dish.

Whether you’re preparing it for a large gathering or enjoying it solo, French onion dip is sure to satisfy your cravings. With its creamy texture, savory onion flavor, and endless dipping possibilities, this classic dip is a staple that everyone will love.

Simple ingredients but the taste is outta this world! Must try!

Too many ingredients! I just want nacho cheese dip, but everyone says this is good. I’ll pass.

  3. 4 stars
My kids won’t eat it. They say it looks weird. But I loved it with chips!

    1. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

      5 stars
I think it looks yummy! Don’t let them fool you, they just need to taste it. The chips make everything better. 😄

    2. User avatar wellRespected says:

      4 stars
Yeah, kids can be picky! Maybe try serving it with different chips? Sometimes they just need a different presentation to give it a try!

  4. User avatar astrid.mclaughlin60 says:

I don’t know about this recipe. Seems like it needs something else? Maybe some cheese? Just not quite there for me.

    1. User avatar wenona.turner says:

      5 stars
I actually find it perfect as it is! The caramelized onions bring so much flavor, cheese could overpower it. Try it before you add anything else!

  5. User avatar latoria.vonrueden68 says:

    3 stars
Just okay. Tasted a little bland to me. Needs something more!

    1. User avatar maximo.mccullough1981 says:

      4 stars
I think you need to let the onions caramelize longer. That brings out more flavor! Maybe add some cheese too?

    2. 3 stars
Bland? Just add more garlic or maybe some hot sauce if you like it spicy! It’s good regardless.

  6. 5 stars
Delicious 🤤! So easy to make and I didn’t even have to go to the store!

  7. User avatar dexter.brakus98 says:

Why do people put sugar in savory stuff? I didn’t add sugar, just confused.

  8. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

This dip is divine! So creamy and flavorful! Five stars from me!

  9. 3 stars
I tried this recipe but it came out too salty. Maybe less salt next time?

  10. User avatar chelsey.hintz9 says:

Dip is good but who has time to caramelize onions? Can’t I just use dried onions?

    1. 4 stars
I totally get you! Who has the time to sit there and caramelize onions? Just using dried ones could work, but it might lose that rich flavor. Maybe you could sauté them quickly instead? 🤷‍♀️

  11. User avatar jonathan.turner76 says:

    5 stars
I made this for a party and it was the highlight! Everyone was raving about it!

    1. User avatar Leland Sipes III says:

      3 stars
Sounds good, but I don’t know about using sour cream. Can you use yogurt instead? I’d like to try it but with a healthier option.

    2. User avatar gema.johnston1974 says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome to hear! I’m glad it was a hit! Did you serve it with anything special?

  12. User avatar tanner.shields1965 says:

    2 stars
Why do you need both garlic and onion powder? Seems redundant to me.

  13. User avatar nevada.zemlak95 says:

    5 stars
This dip is AMAZING! Tastes just like the one at my favorite deli. Will definitely make again!

  14. User avatar eileen.langosh24 says:

    4 stars
I added extra garlic because… why not? Now it’s super punchy. My family loves it but I can see how some people might find it too intense.

    1. User avatar letha.becker1970 says:

      5 stars
Honestly, extra garlic is the move 😄 I bet it tastes amazing with the caramelized onions.

  15. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    3 stars
Four ingredients? I mean there’s lots, but it’s basically dairy + onions. Still good though. 1 hour is okay, but overnight is better.

  16. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

    4 stars
I added a little more garlic powder and it was perfect! Yum!

  17. User avatar jeffrey.grant says:

    4 stars
I didn’t think sour cream and mayonnaise would mix well, but this was surprisingly delicious!

    1. 5 stars
I know right? I was skeptical too at first, but it’s like magic! Now I can’t imagine dip without it.

  18. User avatar verona.schuppe27 says:

    3 stars
Meh. It was okay, but I didn’t really get “french onion” vibes—more like an onion-flavored sour cream dip. Could be my onions weren’t sweet enough.

  19. User avatar josiah.kessler77 says:

    4 stars
Really good! I used Greek yogurt instead of sour cream and it worked well. Flavorful!

  20. User avatar paola.collins says:

    4 stars
This is really tasty but I found it a bit too salty at first. Next time I’ll start with less salt since the sour cream/mayo vary.

  21. 5 stars
So simple but honestly tastes fancy. I forgot to add the sugar at first, then added a tiny pinch and it balanced perfectly.

  22. User avatar valentine.fisher says:

    5 stars
5/5, this is the best recipe ever! Will make again for sure!

    1. User avatar tatiana.erdman0 says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! This dip is a game changer! A crowd pleaser for sure. 🙌

  23. User avatar emmett.schroeder56 says:

    2 stars
I tried it and… yeah, I think I messed up the caramelizing? My onions were more like lightly browned and it tasted kind of oniony-sour instead of rich. Still edible though.

    1. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

      4 stars
Ugh I’m sorry! Oniony-sour usually happens when they don’t get properly caramelized or the pan heat’s a bit off. Next time try medium-low and give them closer to 30–40 minutes (stir less often but keep an eye on it). Also, don’t skip the sugar pinch—it helps them brown without turning sharp.

  24. User avatar felicita.mertz1972 says:

    4 stars
I don’t like chives, so I left them out. But it was still good 8/10.

  25. 4 stars
Can I use yellow onions instead? That’s all I had, but I really wanna try this. 🤔

  26. User avatar jann.hudson1994 says:

    2 stars
The onions took way too long to caramelize. I might just stick to store-bought next time.

  27. User avatar Tomas Rogahn says:

    2 stars
Too much onion, bleh! I prefer something simpler.

  28. 4 stars
Can I use Greek yogurt instead of sour cream? Just wondering, no hate.

  29. User avatar wellRespected says:

    3 stars
Yum! But I added too much salt and it was a little too salty for my taste. Next time I’ll be careful.

    1. User avatar marceline.torphy1954 says:

      4 stars
I find that if you add too much salt, it ruins the dip completely. Just a pinch works wonders! Next time try less salt, okay?

  30. User avatar edgar.rohan1977 says:

    5 stars
This dip is amazin’! I make it for every party and it’s always a hit!

  31. User avatar Blue Dartwing says:

    5 stars
Made this for game night and it disappeared fast. The caramelized onions really make it—sweet, salty, creamy. I used a little extra chives too. 10/10.

  32. User avatar donnie.pfeffer32 says:

    2 stars
Honestly, I thought it was gonna be better. The chives didn’t work for me.

    1. User avatar liberal.hero says:

      4 stars
Sorry to hear that! Maybe try using less chives next time? I think they can be strong sometimes.

  33. User avatar dana.schimmel1985 says:

    4 stars
The flavor is good, but mine turned out a bit thick. Next time I’ll do slightly less sour cream or mix in a splash of milk. Still tasty though.

  34. 3 stars
I messed up the onions and burned them… still tasted good though haha.

  35. 2 stars
I don’t know what the fuss is about. It was too oniony for my taste.

  36. User avatar marvin.upton86 says:

    3 stars
Not sure about the sugar. I know it’s “optional,” but I could still taste it just a little. Still tasty though—maybe I used more than I thought.

    1. 4 stars
Yeah, I feel you—“optional” sugar still shows up a bit. I’ve done it with and without and honestly it helps the onions taste more sweet-caramel, but only a pinch!

    2. User avatar rafaela.howell48 says:

      4 stars
Maybe you didn’t add too much—caramelized onions can make it seem sweeter than expected. I’d try 1/8 tsp next time if you’re trying to keep the sugar super subtle.

  37. User avatar latrina.kirlin1985 says:

    4 stars
Quick and easy, love this recipe! Perfect for game days.

  38. User avatar peter.vandervort says:

    4 stars
Easy and honestly hard to mess up. I used yellow onions and only added a tiny bit of sugar—perfect balance. Chives make a big difference.

  39. User avatar leslee.klocko53 says:

    5 stars
This tastes like the French onion dip from the fancy deli, but way cheaper. I let it chill overnight and the onions went *so* sweet and savory. 10/10 for movie night.

  40. User avatar guadalupe.oreilly55 says:

    5 stars
This dip is amazing! So creamy and flavorful. My family devoured it!

    1. User avatar arielle.braun34 says:

      5 stars
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! It’s my go-to dip for parties! 🍽️

    2. User avatar wilber.von33 says:

      3 stars
OMG, I tried this but it was too heavy for me. Maybe less sour cream? 🤷‍♂️

  41. 3 stars
Bruh, 1 hour is too short—needs overnight lol. But if you wait, it’s really good.

  42. User avatar Magrathean sperm whale says:

    5 stars
I followed the recipe pretty much exactly. I did wait overnight—worth it. Texture was smooth, flavor deep. I’ll definitely make again.

  43. User avatar Dwarven Shpere says:

    4 stars
Honestly this tastes like store-bought french onion dip but better. The garlic powder + onion powder combo is nice and punchy.

  44. User avatar Agrajag says:

    3 stars
I cooked the onions for 15 minutes exactly and they were kinda brown but not caramel-y. I think I need lower heat and more time. Dip still good with veggies.

  45. User avatar coreen.dicki says:

    5 stars
This is super easy and way better than store-bought. I can’t believe I waited this long to try it—my only complaint is I ate too much. lol

    1. User avatar gus.bruen2015 says:

      5 stars
Right?? I was shocked how much flavor the caramelized onions add. Also same on eating too much 😂

  46. User avatar voncile.greenfelder2025 says:

    3 stars
Not sure about the garlic powder—feels like it overpowers the onion vibe. Also I cooked the onions for closer to 30 minutes and that helped, but the flavor still didn’t fully wow me.

  47. User avatar maragret.buckridge1956 says:

    4 stars
I’m usually skeptical of “French onion” dips, but this one hit. I cooked the onions closer to 25 minutes and they were deeply golden. Great with pita chips.

    1. User avatar Christine says:

      5 stars
Glad it worked! I’m also wary of French onion dips, but caramelizing the onions is everything. 25 minutes seems spot on for that deep golden color.

  48. User avatar nathan.bosco2018 says:

    2 stars
I cooked my onions closer to 30 minutes and they got almost burnt, so the dip turned bitter. If you keep them caramel-colored, I bet it’s great.

    1. User avatar rickey.heller22 says:

      3 stars
Wait, I thought 30 minutes is normal? I usually just crank the heat so it browns faster, then add everything—maybe that’s why mine tasted weird. I’ll try lower heat and stop when they’re golden/brown, not dark-dark. Thanks!

    2. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—caramelized onions are super sensitive. If you push them to “almost burnt,” the dip turns bitter fast. I try for deep caramel, but still not smoky. Great tip about keeping them caramel-colored!

  49. 4 stars
I used regular olive oil and dried chives because that’s what I had. Even with substitutions it turned out creamy and oniony. Husband approved. 😅

  50. User avatar isa.lesch9 says:

    4 stars
I followed it exactly but mine was a little bland at first, so I added more salt and pepper after chilling. After that it was great. Next time I’ll adjust from the start.

  51. User avatar kyle.hilpert says:

    5 stars
Made this for game night and it was gone fast. The caramelized onions make it taste way fancier than “just a dip.” Super good with kettle chips.

    1. User avatar Orange Dartwing says:

      5 stars
Yes!! The caramelized onions really take it from “dip” to “wow.” I’ve made it twice now and it disappears fast too—kettle chips are the move.

    2. User avatar melodie.paucek6 says:

      4 stars
I tried it but mine was kinda sharp… I think I didn’t wait long enough for it to chill. Next time I’ll do overnight like you said. Still tasty though!
