Creamy Blue Cheese Dressing is a rich, bold, and flavorful addition that instantly elevates salads, sandwiches, and appetizers. With its smooth texture and signature tangy bite, this dressing brings together the sharp, salty notes of blue cheese with a perfectly balanced creamy base. It is a classic favorite for anyone who enjoys strong, savory flavors with a touch of indulgence.
The base of this dressing is typically made with mayonnaise, sour cream, or Greek yogurt, creating a velvety texture that coats every leaf and ingredient beautifully. Crumbled blue cheese is gently folded in, adding pockets of intense flavor and a slightly chunky consistency. A splash of lemon juice or vinegar brightens the richness, while garlic and a pinch of black pepper enhance the overall depth.
Creamy Blue Cheese Dressing is incredibly versatile. It pairs wonderfully with crisp green salads, especially those with apples, pears, walnuts, or bacon. It is also a perfect dipping sauce for fresh vegetables, chicken wings, or potato wedges. Spread onto burgers or sandwiches, it adds a bold, creamy layer that transforms simple dishes into something special.
The flavor develops even more as the dressing rests, allowing the blue cheese to blend fully with the creamy base. This makes it an excellent make ahead option for entertaining or weekly meal prep. Stored in the refrigerator, it keeps well for several days while maintaining its rich texture and vibrant taste.
What makes this dressing truly memorable is its balance. The creaminess softens the sharpness of the blue cheese, while the tangy elements keep it fresh and lively. It feels indulgent without being overwhelming, making it appealing even to those who are new to blue cheese.

I used Greek yogurt instead of sour cream, came out thicker than I expected. Not bad!
I followed the steps exactly and it came out smooth, but the flavor was kinda flat until I added extra lemon juice. After that it woke up.
I dunno about the buttermilk part, is that necessary? Seems like too much for just a dressing.
This dressing is to die for! Perfect for salads and wings. I added some extra garlic powder for a kick. Yum!
Solid recipe but WHERE THE HECK is the recipe for the salad to go with this?!!!
Easy to make and tastes great! I swapped mayo for vegan mayo, still turned out delish!
I never used vegan mayo before, but glad it worked for you! Sounds good!
I don’t get the appeal of blue cheese, it’s too strong. This recipe may be good for those who like it, though.
Too creamy for my taste. I prefer a lighter vinaigrette.
I’m not convinced about the garlic powder amount. Tastes fine at first but the garlic lingers weirdly. Next time I’ll use fresh garlic (or less powder).
Totally get you—garlic powder can linger fast. Fresh garlic (and/or a lot less powder) usually makes it taste cleaner. I’ve found 1/8 tsp is often plenty for this amount of dressing.
5 stars. So good!!!
Right?! That tangy blue cheese flavor with the lemon is perfect. I just let it chill a bit longer and it gets even better.
This is tasty but mine was a bit thick after chilling. Next time I’ll start with a little extra buttermilk. Also, I may have under-salted because I’m always nervous with salt.
I followed it exactly and the flavor melded nicely after chilling, but the texture felt grainy from the cheese crumbles. Might be my blue cheese brand. Any tips to make it smoother?
Uhm, I think using regular milk instead of buttermilk will work too, right? I don’t have any buttermilk… Hmmm 🤔
I like that it’s pretty simple. I did add a splash more buttermilk like the recipe says and it turned out perfect. Only thing: I used regular yogurt instead of Greek and it was still good.
Made it for a get-together and it was a hit! People wouldn’t stop asking for the recipe. Will definitely be making it again for the Super Bowl!
Couldn’t get it “smooth and creamy” like the instructions. It ended up with little blue cheese chunks—maybe I was stirring wrong?
It was okay. A bit too creamy and rich for my taste. I prefer lighter dressings.
This is dangerously good. I used Greek yogurt instead of sour cream and it still tasted super creamy. The lemon + blue cheese combo is chef’s kiss.
Omg same—Greek yogurt made it even tangier in a good way. I was worried it’d break, but nope. Lemon + blue cheese is a perfect punch.
I tried this but I think my blue cheese was too salty, so I had to add extra buttermilk and maybe half the salt. Still super tasty though. Dangerously good is right 😅
Made this for my salad last night—so tangy and creamy. I used Greek yogurt like the recipe suggests and it still tasted great. The chill time really makes a difference.
This dressing is a total game changer! So rich and creamy, I could eat it with a spoon. Definitely will be making this again!
I agree! This dressing is amazing! I put it on everything now.
Seems a bit much for just a dressing, don’t you think?
I make my own ranch for salads. Why would I use this??
I followed the recipe, but it turned out too thick. I’d suggest adding more buttermilk right from the start.
Made it for my salad and everyone asked for the recipe. Blue cheese flavor is strong but not overpowering (nice balance with the lemon).
Love hearing that! The lemon really does help keep the blue cheese from taking over. Thanks for sharing your results 😊
I tried this but mine was super salty? maybe I used too much blue cheese. Still good tho, the texture was creamy. Would you say the lemon juice amount is fixed or can I add more?
This is a super easy recipe! I used Greek yogurt instead of sour cream like you said. Works just fine!
I dunno, isn’t the sour cream the best part? Greek yogurt just does not taste the same!
Glad it worked out for you! Greek yogurt is such a good substitute. Makes it healthier, right?
Blegh! This dressing was too rich and salty for my taste. Not a fan of blue cheese though. My boyfriend loved it, so maybe it’s just me.
I’m not a huge blue cheese fan, so I was nervous. But the garlic powder + lemon actually balance it out. Would make again, just maybe with slightly less cheese.
I’m the same way about blue cheese—this sounds like a good rescue recipe. The lemon + garlic powder combo is such a smart move. I’ll try it next time but start with a little less cheese like you said.
Blue cheese still scares me lol 😅 but garlic powder + lemon making it “balanced” actually makes sense. I might add a touch more buttermilk though, bc my dressings always end up too thick. Thanks!
Used Greek yogurt instead of sour cream and it worked fine. The dressing still had that creamy texture. Would make again for sure.
YUMMY! A total crowd pleaser! I don’t usually like dressings but this one is bomb!
Super easy to make! I used Greek yogurt instead of sour cream and it turned out great! Thanks for sharing! 😍
Yummy!!! 🙌 Cool dressing for my chicken wings. Been looking for something like this!
I forgot to chill it (oops) and it was still good, but the flavors didn’t meld. Next time I’ll follow the 30 minutes—probably will be even better.
The instructions say “fold in” the blue cheese but mine immediately got all clumpy. I whisked it harder and then it was fine—just took more effort than expected.
I’ve had that happen too—blue cheese can totally seize up if it’s added too aggressively. I now break it up in the bowl with the sour cream first, then fold gently. Glad whisking helped!
I don’t know, blue cheese is just too strong for me. I tried this but it was overwhelming. Might stick to ranch.
I tried it with Greek yogurt instead of sour cream. Still delicious but maybe a bit too tangy.
Pretty good, but mine turned out a bit thick even after chilling. Next time I’ll measure the buttermilk more carefully or add more lemon.
Totally get that—blue cheese dressing can thicken fast, especially after chilling. I’ve found adding 1–2 tbsp extra buttermilk (or even a splash of water) and stirring really helps. Also, make sure the buttermilk you measured is level, not heaping.
I don’t like blue cheese…so this was not for me. But my husband loved it!
So easy to make and so tasty! I put it on everything now! Can I use ranch mix instead of garlic?
Ranch mix would totally change the flavor! I don’t think it’s gonna taste the same, but it might still be good. 🤔
Of course you can! Just use less because ranch is stronger. I put ranch on everything too! 😂
Yum! But where’s the garlic? I think the garlic powder is too little. Needs more flavor!!
More garlic? But isn’t blue cheese already strong? I think the recipe is fine as is.
I agree, garlic is a must! I always put more than the recipe calls for. It makes a huge difference!
Made this for my salad last night and it actually tastes like the restaurant kind—creamy, tangy, and the blue cheese comes through without being overpowering. Chilling it was key. Will repeat!
Yo this slaps. I put it on wings and regretted not making double. Garlic powder is underrated in dressings, ngl.
This dressing was a hit at our BBQ! Tangy and creamy, just perfect!
The chill time matters! I was impatient and served it right away—tasted sharper. Letting it sit for 30+ mins made a big difference.
Blue cheese is just gross! I don’t get how people eat this stuff.
Wow—this tastes way better than the bottled stuff. The lemon really brightens the blue cheese without making it sharp.
Totally agree—lemon juice makes blue cheese taste way more balanced. I also add a pinch more black pepper if I’m feeling bold.
This tastes super tangy and creamy—way better than the bottled stuff. I did add a little extra buttermilk because I like it thinner, and it was perfect.
I love blue cheese, but I think 4 oz might be too much for everyday salads—mine was almost like a dip. Still tasty though!
Really good! I might add a pinch more lemon juice next time. A lil tangy does the trick!
I made this for a party, and half the people loved it, half hated it! Guess you either love blue cheese or you don’t.
Blue cheese can be polarizing! I guess I’m in the ‘love it’ camp. Perfect for a party dip!
Honestly, I just used up old mayo and some leftover cheese. Not fancy but it worked.
This dressing is amazing! So creamy and full of flavor. A game changer for my salads!
I don’t know… blue cheese + mayo is a weird combo to me. My partner liked it, I was meh. Maybe I’m just not a blue cheese person.
Pretty good, though I had to add a splash more buttermilk to get the consistency I like. Also, the garlic powder feels a little strong—next time I’ll go lighter.
Blue cheese + lemon is a weird combo to me. I followed it exactly and it tasted kind of tangy and salty at the same time. Could be my blue cheese though.
Pretty good, but mine was a little too salty. Next time I’m going to start with less than 1/4 tsp salt since blue cheese can be salty too.
Made this for my salad last night and it’s seriously spot on. The blue cheese flavor comes through but isn’t overpowering. I used Greek yogurt since I didn’t have sour cream and it still worked great.
I followed the recipe but my dressing separated a bit after sitting. Anyone else? Maybe my mayo was old or my blue cheese was too dry.
Yes—mine did that once too. I think it’s the fat separating after chilling. Next time I’ll whisk it again right before serving (and make sure the blue cheese isn’t super dry/clumpy).
Pretty good overall, but I had to add extra lemon because it felt a bit too “mayo heavy” at first. After chilling though, it came together nicely.
I used Greek yogurt and it still came out super creamy. I added a little extra buttermilk too and it was perfect for drizzling.
Love hearing that! Greek yogurt + a touch more buttermilk is exactly the kind of tweak that makes it drizzleable. 😋
Super easy and way better than store-bought. 30 minutes chilling is legit—tastes sharper after a day though, so don’t judge too early.
Blue cheese dressing is supposed to be strong and this one is kinda mild. I had to add more pepper and more blue cheese to get it right.
Too salty. Didn’t chill long enough. Blergh.
Followed it exactly and it came out a bit thick for my liking—probably because I didn’t add extra buttermilk. After thinning with a splash, it was perfect on my salad.
Not bad, but it needs a little more garlic powder for my taste. Also I used pre-crumbled blue cheese and it was kinda salty.
Blue cheese + lemon juice is a weird combo? But I tried it anyway and… wow. It tastes like restaurant dressing. 10/10 for dunking wings.
Honestly, I just guessed the measurements and it came out fine. I did no chill time tho lol. Still good—lemon helps a lot.
Blue cheese is my nemesis lol. But my partner loved it. I think chilling longer (like an hour) helped the flavor mellow out.
Not gonna lie, I was worried because my dressing separated a bit after chilling. I whisked it again and it came back together, so… still edible and tasty.
This is decent, but I’m not a fan of garlic powder in dressing. I’d rather use fresh garlic or just skip it.
Fair point—garlic powder can taste a bit one-note in dressings. Fresh garlic (or even just skipping it) would probably make it brighter and more natural. I’ll try that next time.
Not sure I’m convinced. Blue cheese is already strong, and 4 oz seems like a lot for a dressing… mine tasted kinda sharp. Maybe I’ll cut the blue cheese in half next time.
Totally get it—blue cheese can be *intense*. Cutting it in half is a great move, and chilling longer usually helps round out that sharpness.
This is basically just mayo and dairy—no shade, but I don’t get why it’s so special. It’s okay, but I’ve had better from store-bought.
The texture is spot on, but I think 4 oz blue cheese might be a lot for some people. I cut it down to 3 oz and it was still flavorful.
Not gonna lie, I didn’t chill it for 30 minutes and it tasted kinda flat. After chilling, it tasted more “blue cheesy” and balanced.
I think 30 minutes is kinda long. I just mix and eat right away and it’s usually fine? Maybe your blue cheese was less strong? Either way, I’m glad chilling worked for you.
Ahh that makes total sense—I’ve had that happen too. I always rush and then it tastes like “dairy + regret” 😅 Chilling really lets the blue cheese punch through.
Mine turned out kinda thick even after adding a splash of buttermilk. Maybe my blue cheese was drier? Still tasty, just not as smooth as I hoped.
