Christmas Fruitcake

December 19, 2024

Christmas fruitcake is one of the most iconic holiday desserts, loved for its rich, dense texture and deeply spiced flavors. While it often gets a bad rap, a well-made fruitcake is a true holiday treat, packed with a variety of dried fruits, nuts, and warm spices that make each bite a festive experience. Traditionally served during the holiday season, this cake is as much about tradition as it is about flavor, bringing a sense of nostalgia and celebration to the table.

The heart of a good fruitcake lies in its mix of dried fruits such as raisins, currants, sultanas, and candied peel. These fruits are soaked in a generous amount of rum or brandy before being mixed into the batter, which not only infuses them with flavor but also helps keep the cake moist. The richness of the fruitcake comes from the combination of butter, brown sugar, and eggs, which form the cake’s dense, buttery base.

Spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice are key to creating the warm, comforting flavor profile that is characteristic of Christmas fruitcake. The batter also includes a handful of chopped nuts, such as walnuts, almonds, or pecans, that add a nice crunch and texture to each slice.

Once the cake is baked, it’s often “fed” with additional rum or brandy every few days to help preserve it and enhance its flavor. This makes fruitcake one of those rare desserts that only gets better with age. The cake’s rich, boozy flavors continue to develop, creating a deep, complex taste that’s hard to beat.

Christmas fruitcake is often served in thin slices, perfect for snacking throughout the holidays. It pairs wonderfully with a hot cup of tea or a glass of mulled wine. Whether you’re making it for your family or gifting it to loved ones, a homemade fruitcake brings a special touch to any holiday celebration. It’s a dessert that embodies the essence of Christmas: indulgent, full of flavor, and deeply rooted in tradition.

Nutmeg + cinnamon combo is great, but I think 1/2 cup butter might be a little much? Mine felt a bit greasy on day 1.

  2. 1 star
Why do people eat fruitcake? It’s just a bunch of old fruit and nuts! Not for me.

  3. 4 stars
Seems okay, but fruitcake usually needs soaking/aging and mine was good but not ‘old-school’ enough for me. Still, for a quick loaf, great.

    1. 5 stars
Totally get what you mean—traditional fruitcake is all about that soak/aging so the flavors really mellow. I like this version for when you want the vibe without waiting weeks, though.

  4. 3 stars
I dunno about the whole dried fruit thing, but my grandma used to make it. Mabe I try it! ⭐⭐⭐

  5. 3 stars
The spices are nice but 1/4 cup orange juice feels like not enough for that much fruit. I may try adding a splash more next bake.

    1. User avatar maranda.hammes17 says:

      4 stars
I get what you mean—1/4 cup orange juice sounds a bit stingy for all that fruit. I usually eyeball the batter texture and add a little extra liquid if it feels dry. Worth trying!

    2. User avatar troy.jacobi1962 says:

      3 stars
Interesting. I’ve baked fruitcakes where the juice is minimal and the moisture mostly comes from the eggs and the fruit. But if your cake turned out dense/dry, a splash more makes sense.

  6. 4 stars
Easy to follow, but I had to substitute some ingredients because I ran out of eggs. Still turned out pretty good!

  7. User avatar darius.runte75 says:

    5 stars
This fruitcake recipe is absolutely delicious! My family loved it, especially with the orange juice giving it a nice zing! Definitely making it again.

  8. 5 stars
This tastes like Christmas. Like, actual Christmas. My whole house smelled amazing and everyone asked for the recipe. I cooled it fully and sliced it thin—perfect.

  9. User avatar fermin.barrows78 says:

    2 stars
I don’t get what everyone loves about fruitcake. Mine came out dry and kinda weird tasting. Not doing this again.

  10. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

    5 stars
Wow, I added more nuts than it said and it was super crunchy! Love it!

  11. 4 stars
Really good! I didn’t have currants so I used more raisins and it was still tasty. The cinnamon + nutmeg balance is perfect and it slices nicely once cooled completely.

  12. User avatar savannah.schneider98 says:

    3 stars
Easy to follow! My kids love it, but I took some out after 1 hour because I got scared it was burning.

  13. 5 stars
This fruitcake turned out amazing! So moist and flavorful. I can’t believe I waited so long to make it. My family loved it!

  14. 4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about fruitcake being “easy,” but this batter was straightforward. Just make sure your butter is really softened.

    1. User avatar sheryll.johnson says:

      5 stars
Totally felt the same way—fruitcake usually sounds like a project. The “softened butter” tip is the key though; I tried it once with butter that was barely warm and it was way worse.

  15. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    5 stars
OMG this recipe is so good! I made two loaves for the family gathering and they disappeared in seconds! 🍰❤️

  16. User avatar stanton.doyle0 says:

    4 stars
I really liked how easy this was! I added some cherries for color 🍒. It turned out nice and festive!

    1. User avatar Deep Thought says:

      3 stars
Cherries? That’s a bit odd for fruitcake, isn’t it? 🤔 But if you liked it, cool!

    2. 5 stars
I love that you added cherries! It must look beautiful. 🍒 I can’t wait to try this recipe!

  17. User avatar Mr. Prosser says:

    5 stars
Yum!! Best frutcake I made! Only took an hour and half, but who counts? Love it, love it!

  18. 5 stars
The ingredient list is simple, but the method is classic and it really works. Creaming butter and sugar until fluffy matters.

  19. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    1 star
Fruitcake? Isn’t that just a way to use up dried fruit nobody wants? I’ll pass on this one.

  20. 5 stars
This is the best recpie for chirstmas! I made it every year! Makes the house smell amazing too!

  21. User avatar seth.sanford says:

I dunno, fruitcake just ain’t for me. But I guess it turned out ok for people who like it. 3 stars.

    1. User avatar bart.stoltenberg98 says:

      4 stars
Totally get what you’re saying! Fruitcake can be hit or miss. I think it really depends on how it’s made. 🤷‍♂️

  22. 2 stars
I don’t know… 2 cups dried fruit + 1 cup nuts + 1 cup brown sugar seems like a lot. Mine was super dense, like a brick (still edible). Maybe my eggs were smaller.

    1. User avatar bonny.hickle says:

      4 stars
Yeah it’s a *lot* of fruit and sugar, but that’s kind of the point of fruitcake—rich and heavy. If it was like a brick, I’d suspect under-mixing or not enough bake time (or pan size being off).

    2. User avatar pauline.kerluke1986 says:

      4 stars
Two cups dried fruit + a cup of nuts is normal, but brown sugar packed is where it can get dense. Next time maybe level the sugar (don’t pack it as hard) and make sure your eggs are truly large.

  23. User avatar margie.jacobson says:

    5 stars
Yum! So yum! 😂 I couldn’t find currants, so I used extra raisins. Still turned out great! Thank you!

  24. User avatar perry.nader94 says:

    3 stars
I accidentally packed the brown sugar too hard—way too sweet for my taste. Anyone else think 1 cup might be a lot? Maybe reduce by 1/4 cup?

  25. 5 stars
This is the best fruitcake I’ve ever made! So moist and full of flavor. My whole family loved it!

    1. User avatar thu.lockman42 says:

      5 stars
That’s amazing! I’m so glad your family loved it! Fruitcake can be hit or miss, but sounds like you nailed it! 🎉

  26. User avatar dannielle.rice1989 says:

Spent all day making this and then it burned! 😡 Followed the instructions to the letter! Not happy.

  27. User avatar john.pollich62 says:

    3 stars
Who even likes fruitcake? This one was alright tho. A lil too sweet for me.

  28. User avatar elijah.conn says:

    3 stars
This seems a bit too simple for “Christmas” fruitcake. I expected more booze/soaking or maybe a darker molasses vibe. But it worked, I guess.

    1. User avatar wilburn.kuvalis says:

      4 stars
Nah, simple is fine. I made it and it tastes like fruitcake, not like a liquor bottle. If you want darker molasses, just swap in some molasses or add a bit more spice. Toasted nuts also help.

    2. 4 stars
I get what you mean—classic Christmas fruitcake usually has more soaking. But honestly, this one’s already packed with fruit/nuts and the spices carry a lot of flavor. The orange juice is a nice lighter “holiday” vibe instead of super boozy.

  29. User avatar irene.hegmann62 says:

    4 stars
Super easy to throw together. The creaming step is key—mine got light and fluffy like the instructions said. I used a darker loaf pan and it browned faster, so watch your oven!

  30. User avatar shayne.kassulke says:

    3 stars
I forgot the eggs and still it turned out decent. Not sure how that happened, but I’ll take it!

  31. User avatar arletta.zulauf32 says:

    3 stars
Fruity and nutty, like it says! But my oven is broken so did it on the stove, don’t recommend. LOL!

  32. User avatar marlo.barton38 says:

    1 star
Fruitcake? Yuck! No offense but this is not for me.

    1. User avatar cecil.volkman35 says:

I get that fruitcake isn’t for everyone, but it’s a holiday classic! Maybe give it another chance? 🎄

    2. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

      2 stars
Fruitcake is gross, who even likes that? Just stick to cookies, much better!

  33. User avatar Piper Jakubowski IV says:

    2 stars
I added too much sugar and it burnt in the oven. 😭 Should’ve followed the recipe! 2 stars for my mistake.

  34. User avatar Draugr Thrall says:

    4 stars
I thought fruitcake was bad but this one is actually decent. Gonna change my mind about fruitcake!

  35. 5 stars
This fruitcake was a huge hit at our holiday party! Very moist and flavorful!

  36. User avatar tyrone.bailey says:

    5 stars
This fruitcake is a holiday classic! Just made it and it’s perfect! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  37. User avatar carmelita.gulgowski says:

    3 stars
325°F for 1 hour 30 minutes felt long—my oven runs hot. I should’ve trusted my instincts and pulled it sooner. Still tasty, just darker than expected.

  38. User avatar jae.okuneva says:

    1 star
meh. Too many steps for a loaf that tastes like “meh” after a day. I guess fruitcake is just… not my thing.

    1. User avatar Rudolph Pouros says:

      4 stars
Yeah, fruitcake is kinda divisive. If you’re expecting something light and sweet, it can feel like a letdown. I’ve found letting it sit longer (even a couple days) helps a lot—flavors mellow and get richer.

  39. User avatar therese.larson says:

    3 stars
Are we even sure if fruitcake is good? I mean, who eats it outside the holidays? But I guess this looks fine.

  40. User avatar Michael83 says:

    3 stars
Easy to make, but the nuts were overpowering. Could use more of those dried fruits, less nuts! So I’ll give it a 3.

  41. User avatar Rosa Sisters says:

    5 stars
This tastes like holiday memories. The cinnamon + nutmeg combo is spot on. I’m keeping this recipe!

    1. User avatar ouida.beer41 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! That cinnamon + nutmeg vibe is exactly what I look for in fruitcake. Glad you loved it—I’m making this again next week 😄

    2. User avatar Charles Darwin says:

      4 stars
Holiday memories? Nice. I made something similar once and I think I might’ve used too much orange juice—mine stayed a bit wet. Curious though: do you taste the orange strongly or is it more subtle here?

  42. User avatar Eccentrica Gallumbits says:

    3 stars
Pretty good recipe but I think I’d skip the nutmeg next time. It’s just too strong for my taste buds. Anyone else feel that way?

  43. User avatar Anisa Hoeger says:

    2 stars
I’m not sure I buy the “toothpick clean” method for fruitcake—mine was clean but it felt like it needed more time. Also, cream the butter and sugar: do people really get it super fluffy with only 1/2 cup butter? Maybe I’m doing it wrong.

  44. User avatar minerva.koepp84 says:

    5 stars
Wow! Delicious! Also I added some chocolate chips ’cause why not? Best decision ever!

  45. User avatar garnet.king says:

    4 stars
Very easy to make! I didn’t have orange juice so I used apple juice and it worked fine. Not too sweet, just right!

    1. User avatar donnell.adams27 says:

      2 stars
I dunno about apple juice. Seems like it would taste weird. Isn’t that too much fruit?

    2. 5 stars
I love that you used apple juice! That’s a great idea. Can’t wait to try it that way!

  46. User avatar Shadowfax says:

    3 stars
This is a nice basic fruitcake, but mine was kinda bland even with the cinnamon/nutmeg. Maybe I should’ve used darker sugar or more spice. Still edible though!

  47. User avatar janeen.mckenzie34 says:

    5 stars
Great recipe! I added some cranberries and it turned out even better. Will make again! 🌟

    1. 4 stars
Cranberries? That’s a cool twist! I never thought of that. What other fruits do you think work well?

  48. User avatar akilah.kutch says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about only 1 1/2 cups flour for that much fruit/nuts. But it actually holds together. Good recipe.

    1. User avatar oswaldo.konopelski says:

      5 stars
Yeah I felt the same way—fruitcake recipes always look like they need more flour. Nice to hear it really holds together though. I’m definitely trying this.

  49. User avatar jerrold.gutkowski says:

    4 stars
Yum yum fruitcake is best! Mine got little bit burnt but still taste better than store bought!

  50. User avatar rupert.howe says:

    5 stars
This fruitcake tastes just like my Grandma used to make! So happy I found this recipe! 🙂

  51. 4 stars
I was skeptical about fruitcake but this one is pretty good! The orange juice adds a nice twist.

  52. 2 stars
I followed this recipe but ended up with a dense brick. Could be my oven or the measurements, not sure but it did not turn out well. Disappointed.

  53. User avatar sondra.koelpin61 says:

    2 stars
Fruitcake? More like fruit ‘fake’ lol! No offense but it’s not for everyone. 🎄

  54. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

    4 stars
Made this with my kids and they had a blast! So fun to bake together, even if the cake was a bit crumbly.

  55. User avatar Falmer Shadowmaster says:

    5 stars
This is the best fruitcake I’ve ever made! So moist and flavorful. My family loved it! Definitely a 5-star recipe!

  56. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

    5 stars
Made this for Christmas last year and it actually turned out really moist for a fruitcake. The orange juice flavor is subtle but nice.

  57. User avatar salvatore.towne says:

    2 stars
I don’t get the appeal of fruitcake. It just seems like a mix of random things. Plus, my cake burnt after an hour, what a waste!

  58. User avatar ALTplusF4 says:

    2 stars
Not gonna lie, 9×5 loaf pan is too small? It overflowed for me even with careful mixing. I probably measured something wrong, but still—could use clearer guidance for pan size.

  59. 1 star
Fruitcake? Nah, I’d rather have something else. Don’t get why people like it so much! 😒

  60. User avatar mittie.oconner says:

    5 stars
Yum! I added some whiskey to the batter and it turned out delicious! Cheers to Christmas!

  61. 4 stars
I followed the measurements exactly, but my loaf took closer to 1h45 before the toothpick was clean. Still tasty though—warming cinnamon smell in the kitchen.

  62. 4 stars
I used raisins + chopped almonds instead of currants/dates. Don’t hate me—still came out great. Everyone asked for the recipe.

  63. 1 star
Fruitcake? Really? Who even eats this stuff anymore? Not for me, thanks!

  64. User avatar Death Hound says:

    5 stars
Made this for my family last weekend and it smelled amazing. I baked it the full time and the toothpick came out clean—perfectly moist fruitcake for once!

    1. User avatar delois.parker1957 says:

      5 stars
Omg that sounds like the holy grail of fruitcake 😄 “perfectly moist” is exactly what mine never is. What kind of dried fruit combo did you use?

  65. User avatar olympia.treutel says:

    5 stars
This is a classic vibe. I used currants and dates like the recipe says and it tastes very “holiday.” The cinnamon + nutmeg combo is perfect. 10/10 for nostalgia.

    1. User avatar belia.lemke37 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—those spices with the dried fruit just scream holiday. I’ve been making something similar for years, and the cinnamon + nutmeg really is the magic.

  66. User avatar amelia.lynch1957 says:

    2 stars
1 hour 30 min seems too short for a loaf pan—mine was raw in the middle at 90 minutes. I had to bake like 20-30 more. Fix the timing and it’s a 4/5.

  67. 4 stars
Yum! This recipe is nice, but I wish it had a bit more spice. Next time I’ll add more cinnamon! 😋

    1. User avatar mohammed.larkin30 says:

      4 stars
I agree! A little more spice would really kick it up a notch. I love the texture of fruitcake! 🍰

  68. User avatar sherri.stark says:

    1 star
Meh… fruitcake is overrated. I tried it, but I don’t see why people go crazy over it at Christmas.

  69. 3 stars
I don’t pack brown sugar like that and mine came out slightly dry. Lesson learned: pack it. Flavor was decent either way.

  70. 4 stars
The method is straightforward and I liked that it’s baked in a loaf pan instead of trying to do something complicated. I’d call it an easy fruitcake for beginners.

  71. User avatar Paul "Muad'Dib" "Usul" Atreides says:

    5 stars
5 stars! But also… fruitcake is supposed to be aged right? 😅 I ate it the next day and it was good, but I think it’d be even better after a few days.

    1. User avatar marylynn.schoen says:

      4 stars
I don’t wait lol 😅 Mine’s gone by day one. It’s still good, but I bet it would be richer if it had time to soak up that orange juice + sugar.

    2. User avatar nathaniel.oconnell1964 says:

      5 stars
Yesss—fruitcake is totally one of those “better with time” things. I usually wrap mine and let it rest a few days (sometimes even a week). The flavors really mellow and mingle.

  72. User avatar tresa.herman says:

    1 star
LOL fruitcake for Christmas?? How original! 1 star for being cliché.

  73. User avatar Dale E. Bread says:

    5 stars
Made this for a small holiday gathering and it turned out beautifully—rich, fragrant, and not too sweet. The orange juice really lifts the whole thing. I followed the bake time pretty closely.

  74. User avatar isabella.beier says:

    2 stars
I followed the recipe exactly, but mine came out too dry. Is that normal? 🤔⭐⭐

    1. User avatar Restless Draugr says:

      4 stars
It shouldn’t be dry if you followed the recipe! Maybe try reducing the baking time or adding a bit more butter next time?

  75. 2 stars
idk why but mine was kinda dry 😕 i left it too long prob. flavor was good tho.

  76. User avatar Draugr Wight says:

    5 stars
Made this last Christmas and it turned out beautifully—sweet, fragrant, and not too dense. The orange juice really brightens it. I’d definitely bake a minute or two longer if your oven runs cool.

  77. 4 stars
I substituted orange juice with clementine juice and it worked. Only thing: I forgot to grease and flour perfectly and it stuck a little on the sides. Not catastrophic, but be careful.

  78. User avatar beth.gutkowski7 says:

    5 stars
This is dangerously good. I had to stop myself from eating slices for breakfast 😅 The aroma while baking is unreal. Only thing: I’d reduce orange juice next time just a touch if you prefer less citrus.

  79. User avatar eugenio.carroll says:

    5 stars
Made this for our office potluck and it turned out super flavorful—love the mix of cinnamon and nutmeg with the orange juice. Mine took a few extra minutes to set, but the toothpick method worked great.

    1. User avatar lakeshia.franecki2016 says:

      5 stars
That sounds amazing! The cinnamon + nutmeg + orange juice combo is the whole vibe. I like that you mention the toothpick test too—fruitcake can be sneaky.

  80. User avatar jenell.weber86 says:

    3 stars
It’s alright but way too sweet for my taste. I think it could use less sugar.

    1. User avatar marlys.dicki87 says:

      4 stars
I totally understand, it is pretty sweet! You could try using less sugar next time. Maybe even swap some for honey or maple syrup?

  81. 4 stars
Oof… my batter was super thick and I worried I ruined it. Turns out it just needs proper mixing—still baked up fine. Would make again.

  82. User avatar Miss Sammy Corwin says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about “freshly squeezed” orange juice—like does it really matter? I used bottled and it was still okay, but I don’t know… not mind-blowing.

  83. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

    4 stars
I followed it exactly and it still didn’t taste very “fruitcake-y”… like more of a spiced loaf. Not bad though. Also, I forgot to grease + flour at first (oops) and it stuck a little—learned my lesson.

    1. User avatar rodolfo.white says:

      3 stars
Honestly I think it’s your expectations 😅 If you want true fruitcake, you usually need more dried fruit (and often soak it). Yours sounds delicious either way—though I’m glad it wasn’t a disaster after the pan issue.

    2. 4 stars
Hmm, I get what you mean. This one sounds more like a quick spiced fruit loaf than the super boozy, dense classic fruitcake. Did you chop the dates small enough and pack the sugar well? That can really shift the “fruitcake” vibe.

Honestly, I was nervous because fruitcake can be heavy, but this one’s tender and smells amazing. I toasted the nuts first and it added a nice depth. Would bake again.

I don’t even know what nutmeg is…but I tried it! This cake is kinda dense tho.

This fruitcake is a Christmas miracle! It turned out perfect and moist. Everyone loved it at dinner! 🎄🍰

Fruitcake is overrated. Why is there so much effort for something that taste like it belongs in a museum? 😅

I was skeptical about fruitcake, but this recipe changed my mind. The spices were just right! 👍

Pretty good, but I think 1/2 cup butter is a little low? Mine came out slightly dry even though the toothpick was clean. Next time I’ll check earlier and maybe add a bit more orange juice or bake time less.

    1. 5 stars
Yeah, I agree—mine’s been a bit on the dry side when I keep the butter at 1/2 cup. I started doing closer to 3/4 cup and it stays more tender. Also I usually pull it 5–10 min earlier than “toothpick clean” because ovens vary.

Thanks for the tip! I’m curious though—was your dried fruit super dry or not packed? Fruitcake can drink up moisture. I might try adding a touch more orange juice like you said and watch the doneness sooner.

Not impressed. It was dry and way too sweet for my taste. Might try again with less sugar.

I totally get it! I find fruitcake can be hit or miss, especially with the sweetness. Maybe adding a pinch of salt could balance it out a bit?

Made this for Christmas last year and it was a hit. The nutmeg + cinnamon combo smells like the holidays in the best way. Mine took the full 1h 30m and I let it cool completely—huge difference.

Love this—nutmeg + cinnamon really does smell like Christmas. Glad you let it cool fully too; I always feel fruitcake gets better once it’s had time to set.

The spice balance is good—cinnamon and nutmeg aren’t overpowering. I’m picky about fruitcake and this one didn’t disappoint me.

  93. 3 stars
Mine came out a bit dry after 1.5 hours, even though the toothpick was “mostly clean.” Next time I’ll check earlier and maybe loosely cover with foil. Flavor is still good though.

Made this last Christmas and it came out sweet, dense, and really flavorful. The orange juice makes a noticeable difference—like brightens the whole cake.

  96. 5 stars
This sounds perfect! Quick question: does 325°F mean fan/convection? I usually hate converting temps. If not, I’ll just bake normally and hope for the best.

The texture was nice and dense (in a good way) and the sweetness felt perfect. I used chopped pecans instead of mixed nuts and it still tasted like “real” fruitcake. Will bake again.

That’s awesome to hear! Dense, not dry, and the sweetness “just right” is exactly what I’m aiming for. Pecans are a great swap—did you toast them first or use them raw?

  98. User avatar chuck.damore says:

Not bad! Super dense like fruitcake should be. My toothpick test was clean, but I left it out to cool too fast—cracked a little. Haha.

125 minutes is a long time. I baked it and it was a little too dark on top, but the inside was okay. Next time I’ll tent with foil.

Was good, but my oven is broken, so I used a toaster oven? Might be why it didn’t rise…

I followed it exactly but mine came out a bit dry after cooling. Not totally bad, just not as moist as I expected from fruitcake. Maybe I overbaked—next time I’ll start checking at 1:15.

Came out kinda too sweet for me. Also I packed the brown sugar like the recipe says, but maybe it was too much. Flavor’s fine, just would like a less sugary version.

I followed it exactly and it still sank a bit in the middle. Could my loaf pan be too deep? Also I used raisins only because I couldn’t find currants.

    1. 4 stars
It *might* be the pan. If it’s deeper than a 9×5 loaf pan, the batter takes longer to set in the center, so it can sink a bit even if the outside looks done. Next time, check at ~1 hr 15 and if the center isn’t there, tent with foil.

    2. User avatar Barry Manilow says:

Sinking in the middle usually means it wasn’t fully baked or it rose and then collapsed. Make sure your toothpick is truly clean in the center—sometimes it comes out clean but still gooey. Also, I think substituting raisins for currants can add more moisture and sweetness, which could affect texture.

Pretty solid recipe, though I’d add a little extra orange zest next time. Mine came out tasty but slightly dry at the very center after 1h30.

Thanks! Extra orange zest sounds great—I’d try it too. Also for the dry center, did you check with an oven thermometer? Fruitcake loaves can vary a lot.

Not sure why people call it “Christmas” fruitcake—feels more like a quick loaf cake. Also I forgot to grease and flour the pan and it stuck BAD. My fault but yeah.

  106. User avatar Arthur Dent says:

Tasty, but mine came out a bit dry after 1 hr 30 min. I think my loaf pan runs hot? Next time I’ll start checking around 70-80 minutes. Still, the fruit and nuts are a great combo.

  107. 5 stars
This tastes like holiday vibes. I’m not even kidding. The cinnamon and nutmeg hit just right with the dried fruit.

  108. 2 stars
325°F for 1.5 hours? That seems short for fruitcake. Mine came out underbaked in the middle even after checking once. Next time I’ll tent with foil and bake longer.

  109. User avatar ruth.macejkovic says:

    4 stars
My toothpick never came out ‘clean’ at 1 hr 30, so I left it longer and it turned out fine. Next time I’d start checking at 75 min.

I was a little skeptical about 1.5 cups flour for that much fruit/nuts, but wow—worked. Only tweak: I added a splash more orange juice because my batter looked dry.

I used store-bought orange juice instead of freshly squeezed. It was still tasty, but the flavor felt a bit flatter. Fresh is worth it.

I followed it pretty much exactly but my loaf took closer to 1 hr 45 min. Still delicious though—spices smell amazing while baking.

I tried “creaming” but my mixture looked grainy—maybe my brown sugar wasn’t packed right. Still came out edible though, so I’m not mad 😅

Made this for Christmas last year and it turned out dense but in a good way—very traditional. The spices smell amazing while it bakes. I used freshly squeezed orange juice and it really helped the flavor.
