Chicken Tender

September 1, 2023

Chicken tender is a beloved comfort food enjoyed by kids and adults alike. These strips of chicken breast, known for their tenderness and crisp golden coating, are easy to make and even easier to love. Whether baked, fried, or air-fried, chicken tenders deliver satisfying flavor and crunch in every bite.

What makes chicken tender so popular is their simplicity. Typically made from the tenderloin portion of the chicken breast, these pieces are naturally more tender than other cuts. When coated in seasoned breadcrumbs, flour, or panko, and then cooked until golden brown, they offer a perfect combination of juicy meat and crispy exterior.

Chicken tender is also incredibly versatile. They can be served with a variety of dipping sauces—such as honey mustard, ranch, barbecue, or buffalo—for endless flavor options. They make a great main dish, snack, or even a protein-packed topping for salads and wraps. Plus, they’re easy to customize: add spices to the breading for a bold kick, or go gluten-free with an almond flour coating.

For a healthier twist, baking or air frying chicken tenders is a great alternative to deep frying. With just a light spray of oil, you can still achieve a crispy finish without the extra grease.

Homemade chicken tenders are also a great meal-prep option. Make a batch ahead of time and freeze extras for quick meals throughout the week. They reheat well in the oven or air fryer, maintaining that satisfying crunch.

Whether you’re feeding a family, hosting a casual game day, or just craving something comforting, chicken tenders are a timeless favorite. Crispy, flavorful, and endlessly dippable, they prove that simple ingredients often make the most delicious meals.

I’m not a fancy cook, so I just winged it. Also I forgot parchment and it stuck slightly (my fault). Still tasty though—kids ate it!

Is parma cheese really necessary? I don’t have any. Can I just use cheddar?

    1. User avatar monica.lynch1957 says:

      2 stars
No way! Parm is the best part! Cheddar’s not gonna taste the same. You should just get some parmesan!

    2. User avatar alonso.hodkiewicz44 says:

      4 stars
Yeah, cheddar should be fine! It’ll give a different flavor but still be tasty. I never bother with fancy cheese anyway.

  3. User avatar jamika.mills48 says:

    3 stars
Okay, but I overcooked them a bit. How do I know if they’re actually done? I need a meat thermometer!

  4. User avatar awilda.raynor says:

    5 stars
So good! I didn’t have paprika, used chili powder instead. Still turned out crisp and delicious!

  5. 5 stars
Made these tonight—super crispy and actually stayed crunchy even after a few minutes. I used a mix of Parmesan and Pecorino and it tasted like a grown-up version of fast food. Would definitely make again!

  6. User avatar sonny.gerlach says:

    5 stars
These chicken tenders turned out amazing! Super crispy and flavorful. Will definitely make again.

    1. User avatar april.nader2018 says:

      2 stars
They turned out amazing? Seriously? I tried a similar recipe and they came out soggy. What did you do differently?

    2. User avatar shaquita.schamberger17 says:

      5 stars
I’m so glad to hear that! These chicken tenders are one of my go-to recipes. Crispy is key!

  7. 2 stars
Hmm… 1 cup breadcrumbs seems like a lot? I had more than enough coating and then it got kinda dry. Next time I’ll adjust and add a touch more egg.

    1. User avatar Shadout Mapes says:

      4 stars
I get what you mean—1 cup can be too much depending on how big your tenders are and how thick you press the crumbs. I usually measure by coverage, not by volume. Also, adding more egg can help it stick without drying out.

  8. 4 stars
Tried this last night and it was a hit! Even my picky eater enjoyed it! 👍

  9. 4 stars
Yum! Just made these last night and they were crispy and juicy! Better than any fast food.

    1. 5 stars
I totally agree, these chicken tenders are so much better than fast food! Plus, you know what’s in them!

    2. 2 stars
I don’t know… they look good but I bet fast food is still faster. Also, who has time to cook?

  10. User avatar sammy.mccullough41 says:

    4 stars
I followed it pretty much exactly but mine weren’t as golden as the photo types. Maybe my oven runs cool? Still delicious though, and the flavors were great with ranch.

  11. 4 stars
I used chicken strips instead of tenders and they turned out fine. However 425°F feels high—mine started browning before fully cooking, so I covered loosely with foil halfway.

    1. User avatar sidney.wisozk says:

      5 stars
Good to know! 425°F can be a little aggressive depending on thickness—covering with foil halfway makes sense to stop the browning while the inside finishes.

  12. 5 stars
These are the best chicken tenders I’ve ever made! So crispy and delicious. My kids loved ’em!

  13. 3 stars
The recipe is good, but my coating slid off a bit. I think I didn’t press firmly enough and my eggs were kind of watery. Next time I’ll be more patient.

  14. 4 stars
Directions were super easy to follow. I think I overcooked mine a bit tho, they were tough.

    1. 4 stars
Overcooked chicken can happen! Next time, try checking them a few minutes early. They should be juicy!

  15. User avatar Ma'randru-jo says:

    2 stars
Too many steps for just chicken. Why not just fry it? Also, where’s the flavor?

    1. User avatar sammie.sanford44 says:

      5 stars
Frying is easy, but this way you don’t end up with greasy chicken! Plus, it’s crispy and tastes sooo good if you do it right!

    2. User avatar barabara.lueilwitz says:

      4 stars
I get what you’re saying, but I think the oven baking makes it healthier! You could add some spices to the mix for extra flavor!

  16. User avatar clyde.johns59 says:

    3 stars
I followed everything, but my coating fell off a bit. Maybe I didn’t press hard enough. The flavor was still nice, but not as crunchy as I wanted.

  17. 5 stars
Quick and easy. I tossed in some Italian seasoning too and it turned out like pub food. 10/10 for weeknights.

  18. User avatar Meriadoc Brandybuck says:

    4 stars
I’m not usually an oven-broiler person, but this came out better than fried. Next time I’ll add a pinch of cayenne for a little kick.

  19. User avatar thad.armstrong7 says:

    4 stars
I’m skeptical about baking making them crispy—fried chicken is the real deal. But these were actually decent! Would make again.

  20. User avatar Sharita Huels says:

    4 stars
2nd batch needs more spices, but overall a nice recipe! Gonna tweak it a bit!

    1. 4 stars
I thought the spices were just right! Maybe you just need to experiment more. Glad you liked it overall!

    2. User avatar albert.hickle51 says:

      2 stars
More spices? Nah, I think it’s already too salty! I ain’t got the taste for all that. Keep it simple!

  21. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    5 stars
This recipe is super easy and delish! My fam loved it! 🥳

  22. User avatar Xavier Schmitt MD says:

    5 stars
This is like a grown-up version of fast food tenders. I used a bit extra garlic powder and it slapped. Would absolutely make again.

    1. 5 stars
Yes!! “grown-up” is exactly right 😄 I made these with extra garlic too and they were super crispy.

  23. User avatar faustino.nitzsche49 says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about “crispy and golden brown” in the oven without flipping or using oil. I baked them, and yeah… it was crunchy-ish but not like fried. Still tasty and easy.

  24. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    4 stars
Not bad for an oven version. I was skeptical about baking instead of frying, but it’s still decent. Would pair great with ranch or honey mustard.

    1. User avatar luvenia.weimann says:

      5 stars
Honestly same—was sure the oven would make them soggy. But mine came out crispy too. Ranch or honey mustard is the move!

  25. User avatar austin.ruecker says:

    5 stars
These chicken tenders were an absolute hit! My kids devoured them in minutes. Will definitely make again!

  26. User avatar Mountain Minish says:

    4 stars
Pretty good basic recipe. I think 425°F is key. Mine took closer to 22 minutes though, because my tenders were thicker. Still worth it.

    1. User avatar Grunthos the Flatulent says:

      5 stars
Agreed—425°F seems like the sweet spot for getting the coating actually crisp. I’m glad you mentioned the time variance too; thicker tenders always take longer.

  27. User avatar teodoro.parker5 says:

    3 stars
15-20 minutes seems short to me for chicken tenders. Mine needed like 25-28 to be fully cooked—just saying, check internal temp!

  28. User avatar gerardo.daugherty59 says:

    5 stars
First time cooking chicken tenders and they turned out SO good! I am a chef now 👩‍🍳.

  29. User avatar leo.koelpin92 says:

    3 stars
Not bad! But I think I need more spices next time. 🤔

  30. User avatar Eccentrica Gallumbits says:

    5 stars
These came out super crispy and flavorful—loved the parmesan + paprika combo. I didn’t even need much sauce. Great weeknight meal!

    1. 3 stars
Hmm 15–20 min at 425°F feels a little short for my oven. I tried once and they were kinda dry. Maybe my tenders were thicker? Still, the seasoning sounds good though.

    2. User avatar talitha.reynolds42 says:

      5 stars
Yes! I’m always skeptical about oven “crispy” but this combo actually delivers. The parmesan + paprika is such a good flavor punch—making these again for sure.

  31. User avatar Falmer Gloomlurker says:

    3 stars
Took forever to prepare. I’m too lazy for this. 😩

  32. User avatar fermin.casper says:

    5 stars
Made these tonight—so crispy! I used a little extra parmesan and they browned perfectly around 18 minutes. Definitely adding to the rotation.

    1. User avatar marina.russel says:

      3 stars
I tried this but mine came out kinda dry 😕 I followed 20 minutes though. Maybe I should bake hotter or do less time. Still tasty, just not super crispy.

    2. 5 stars
Ahh love hearing this! I swear the Parmesan helps it get that crackly, golden edge. 18 minutes sounds spot on—going to try your “extra parm” move next time.

  33. 2 stars
I followed the recipe but mine turned out soggy. What did I do wrong? Any tips?

  34. User avatar Frost Atronach says:

    4 stars
Is there a way to make this without egg? I’m allergic. 😞

    1. 5 stars
You can definitely use a substitute for eggs! Try using a mixture of flaxseed meal and water or applesauce. It works great in breading!

    2. User avatar lucius.schimmel92 says:

      3 stars
Just don’t use eggs? 🤷‍♂️ You can just skip it, won’t be as crispy but still chicken.

  35. User avatar lance.greenfelder says:

    3 stars
I followed the recipe but my tenders came out soggy. I think I need a better bake time.

    1. User avatar nova.fritsch says:

      4 stars
Maybe try baking them a bit longer? Mine were perfect at 20 mins.

  36. User avatar clarence.conn says:

    2 stars
Hmmm, why isn’t there any sauce in the recipe? Seems off. 😕

  37. User avatar erinn.rosenbaum26 says:

    5 stars
Chicken tenders are da bomb! I added some hot sauce to the egg wash and it was lit! 🔥

  38. User avatar buddy.sporer74 says:

    4 stars
Not bad, but 500g is a lot for one meal. I halved everything and it was way easier. Would rate higher if I didn’t mess up the spacing on the tray.

  39. User avatar R. M. Pitt says:

    4 stars
This was easy! My kids loved them. I used ranch dressing as a dip and it was a hit!

    1. User avatar petrina.oconner says:

      5 stars
Ranch dressing? That’s a great idea! I usually go for BBQ sauce, but I’ll have to try that next time. Glad your kids enjoyed it!

  40. User avatar heriberto.streich1969 says:

    5 stars
These were incredible! My kids devoured them in minutes. Will definitely make again!

  41. User avatar jesus.anderson2005 says:

    4 stars
Easy and quick! Used Italian bread crumbs instead of regular and it made a big difference. So flavorful!

    1. User avatar cedric.white1981 says:

      2 stars
But isn’t that a bit weird? Italian breadcrumbs with chicken? I dunno if that sounds good…

    2. 4 stars
I’m glad it worked out for you! I’ve always used regular breadcrumbs. Maybe I’ll try Italian next time!

  42. User avatar Emily Saunders says:

    2 stars
Quick question: do we cover them? Mine dried out after 20 mins 😭 Next time I’ll watch the time closer.

    1. User avatar Gail Andrews says:

      4 stars
Yes—covering them loosely with foil for part of the bake can help stop them from drying out. I usually tent mine for the first ~8–10 minutes, then uncover for the last bit to crisp.

  43. User avatar Shadout Mapes says:

    5 stars
Tried these tonight—so crispy on the outside and juicy inside. The parmesan + paprika combo is money. Followed the bake time pretty closely.

  44. User avatar yong.macgyver14 says:

    5 stars
Chicken + breadcrumbs = good! Nuff said.

  45. User avatar sydney.dooley32 says:

    3 stars
I followed the recipe but mine turned out kinda soggy. Maybe I didn’t bake them long enough? Not sure what went wrong.

  46. User avatar theresa.nicolas0 says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, 425°F for 15 minutes felt too short. I checked and they were a little underdone in the thickest pieces. After another 5 minutes they were perfect, so just cook to temp.

    1. User avatar darius.tillman says:

      5 stars
Yeah I agree—15 min is always a gamble depending on tender thickness. “Cook to temp” is the real rule here. 👍

  47. User avatar jame.schiller says:

    5 stars
I only had panko breadcrumbs and it came out even better! The garlic powder + paprika combo is 👌. Next time I’ll add a little chili powder too.

  48. User avatar Ne'ez Yohma says:

    1 star
I don’t see how this could work… I’ve never had luck with oven-baked anything.

    1. 3 stars
Oven-baked stuff can be tricky, but if you watch the time, it might work! Good luck!

    2. 5 stars
I used to think the same but these tenders surprised me! Just follow the steps and you’ll see!

  49. User avatar shanda.torp says:

    3 stars
I tried these but forgot the garlic powder… They came out kinda bland 😕.

  50. User avatar daria.welch says:

    4 stars
Yummm, good recipe. I just mixed in some ranch seasoning to the coating, nice twist! 😋

  51. User avatar filiberto.macejkovic says:

    3 stars
Chicken tenders? Aren’t those just for kids? I prefer a nice steak, lol.

  52. User avatar steve_maga says:

    4 stars
You guys! I forgot the eggs and still it worked. Life hack or what?

  53. 2 stars
Why use parmesan? Just use regular cheese, it’s cheaper. 😂

  54. User avatar Slartibartfast says:

    3 stars
425°F seems high? Mine got golden before the inside was fully done. I ended up adding like 5 more minutes and tented with foil—still tasty though.

  55. 2 stars
Hmm, I’ve made something like this before and it turned out soggy… maybe I didn’t dry the chicken enough. Still, the seasonings are simple and that’s nice.

  56. User avatar lucila.balistreri74 says:

    4 stars
My husband loved these! I didn’t have parmesan so used cheddar instead.

    1. 5 stars
Cheddar sounds like a yummy swap! Glad your husband liked it!

  57. User avatar edmond.hirthe says:

    4 stars
Delicious! But I think there’s way too much cheese… Next time I’ll cut back on it.

  58. User avatar rosanne.reynolds says:

    5 stars
Made these tonight and they came out super crispy—like actually crispy, not soggy. I used a little extra parmesan too. Will definitely repeat!

  59. User avatar Thufir Hawat says:

    5 stars
Yummy! I added a little more paprika and they were super flavorful. Thanks for sharing!

  60. 2 stars
I can’t spell chicken, but I can cook it 😅. Mine came out kinda brown on the bottom only, should I flip them?

  61. 3 stars
I accidently put too much paprika and now they taste like a campfire! LOL.

  62. 5 stars
These came out super crispy and stayed golden even after cooling a bit. Used panko instead of regular breadcrumbs—highly recommend!

    1. User avatar harold.gleichner17 says:

      5 stars
Yesss crispy for real! I’ve never tried panko in this exact setup, but after reading your comment I’m doing it next time. Thanks!

  63. User avatar vernon.ward2 says:

    1 star
Chicken tenders? Meh, what about veggie options? I mean not everyone can eat meat, right? Just sayin…

  64. 2 stars
I didn’t have parmesan, so I used cheddar. Made it taste weird…

  65. User avatar marvin.adams26 says:

    2 stars
I burnt mine at 425°F. Should I have used a lower temp? Not sure if I did it right.

    1. 2 stars
I dunno, I always cook at 450°F and it turns out fine. Maybe you just need to watch ’em better.

    2. 4 stars
Yeah, 425°F is pretty high. Maybe try 375°F next time? That should help with burning!

  66. User avatar Toya Nicolas says:

    2 stars
I followed the recipe but they turned out kinda soggy. Maybe my breadcrumb was too old?

  67. User avatar roberta.moore43 says:

    4 stars
Pretty solid recipe. I had to bake closer to 22 minutes because my tenders were thick, but seasoning was on point.

  68. 5 stars

  75. User avatar tonda.jacobson42 says:

    4 stars
Simple and tasty. I’m not usually into baked breaded stuff, but the paprika/garlic combo is legit. Would recommend flipping once for extra even crisping.

    1. User avatar gino.schmeler2022 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—paprika + garlic makes it way better than basic breading. I flipped mine halfway and it came out super even and crunchy!

  76. User avatar jeneva.morissette12 says:

    2 stars
I tried this but they came out dry. Followed everything! 🤷‍♀️

    1. User avatar tiara.mitchell2008 says:

      4 stars
Maybe try less time in the oven? Sometimes they overcook if left too long.

  77. 3 stars
Not bad, but 1 cup breadcrumbs felt a little dry. Next time I’ll add a drizzle of olive oil or more egg for better sticking.

  78. User avatar carmelo.brekke says:

    3 stars
My tenders stuck to the parchment a little. Next time I’ll oil the sheet first. Flavor is great, but the texture could be more consistent.

  79. 2 stars
eh… not bad. could use more parmesan, or more salt maybe. also eggs everywhere lol

  80. User avatar vince.hauck67 says:

    4 stars
I followed it pretty closely, but my breadcrumbs weren’t as golden as yours probably—maybe my oven runs cool? Still tasted good though, and the seasoning is on point.

  81. User avatar hong.hettinger63 says:

    3 stars
Idk if it was the brand of breadcrumbs, but the coating felt a bit dry. Maybe add a tiny splash of oil to the crumb mix? Flavor was still solid.

    1. User avatar freida.kreiger28 says:

      5 stars
Totally get that—breadcrumbs can be a little dry depending on the type (especially if they’re fine crumbs). A tiny splash of oil (or even melted butter) in the crumb mix can help them crisp and brown more evenly. Glad the flavor still came through!

    2. User avatar hayden.cronin63 says:

      4 stars
Maybe you just needed to bake longer? 15-20 mins at 425°F is kinda fast for chicken tenders sometimes. I’ve also found egg doesn’t always stick if the coating mix is too dry, so pressing a bit longer helps. But oil in the crumbs sounds good too—idk.

  82. 3 stars
I followed it exactly and… mine weren’t as crispy as I hoped. Maybe my oven runs cool? Still tasty though.

  83. User avatar mathWizard says:

    5 stars
These chicken tenders were a hit at my family dinner! Super easy and delicious. Will make again!

    1. 3 stars
Nah, I prefer deep frying mine. Baked just ain’t the same! But hey, glad it worked for you.

    2. 5 stars
So glad to hear that! I love when a recipe comes together like that. Did you serve any sauces with it?

I used chicken breast instead, still works but be careful about the time.

I added hot sauce to the mix, and it was 🔥. Try it!

Honestly, hot sauce with chicken? Sounds weird, not sure about that.

Yum! My kids loved them! I added a bit of cayenne for some spice, and they were perfect.

Perfect for my game night! We dipped them in ranch and BBQ sauce, heavenly!

I think this recipe’s too simple. Where’s the spice? I usually add chili flakes or something to give it a real kick! Don’t get me wrong, though, they look good!

Easy recipe, but honestly, can’t compare to the frozen ones. 🤷‍♂️

Kind of bland for me. I think I needed more salt/pepper or maybe I used low-quality Parmesan? The crust was fine but the chicken flavor didn’t pop. Sauce helped.

Way too much pepper for my taste, I think. Otherwise the parmesan flavor is great. My kid still ate them all lol.
