Burrito

August 23, 2024

The burrito is one of the most iconic and beloved dishes in Mexican cuisine, known for its versatility, portability, and satisfying flavors. Whether you prefer it packed with seasoned meats, vegetarian fillings, or a combination of both, a burrito offers endless possibilities to suit your tastes. It’s a hearty, handheld meal that can be as simple or as elaborate as you like, making it perfect for everything from a quick lunch to a filling dinner.

At the core of a burrito is the large flour tortilla, which serves as a delicious wrap for a variety of ingredients. The fillings typically include seasoned meats like beef, chicken, or pork, but there are plenty of vegetarian options as well, such as beans, rice, and sautéed vegetables. The flavors of the fillings are enhanced by spices and seasonings like cumin, garlic, cilantro, and chili powder, creating a rich and savory taste that’s full of depth.

Rice, beans, and salsa are popular accompaniments, providing texture and balance to the burrito. The rice is often seasoned, making it a flavorful addition to the dish. The beans, whether black beans, pinto beans, or refried beans, add creaminess and substance. Salsa, whether mild or spicy, offers a fresh, tangy contrast to the richness of the other ingredients, and guacamole or sour cream adds extra creaminess for those who want a bit more indulgence.

The best part about burritos is how customizable they are. You can load them up with your favorite toppings and fillings or keep them simple for a lighter meal. Cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes are popular choices, but you can also add hot sauce, pickled jalapeños, or even grilled vegetables for extra flavor. For a heartier version, try adding a fried egg, avocado, or even crispy bacon.

Burritos can be enjoyed in various ways, whether you’re eating a traditional Mexican burrito, a breakfast burrito with eggs and bacon, or a giant “California-style” burrito packed with French fries or other unique fillings. Whether served as a quick meal on the go or as part of a bigger feast, burritos can be made to match your exact craving.

These turned out so crispy on the outside—my whole family went back for seconds. The sour cream + salsa combo is chef’s kiss.

  2. 3 stars
I dunno… this seems way too complicated for a burrito. You could just wrap it all up like a sandwich, right?

  3. 3 stars
I just throw all the ingredients in and eat it like a salad! 😂

    1. 4 stars
That’s one way to do it! 😂 I actually prefer it in a burrito form, but hey, whatever works for you!

    2. User avatar michal.grant1964 says:

      2 stars
But that’s not how you make a burrito! It’s supposed to be rolled up! 😬

  4. User avatar palmer.kling56 says:

    5 stars
These turned out so good—crispy on the outside and everything inside was perfectly balanced. I used a little extra salsa and it was amazing.

  5. 3 stars
Meh, it was okay. I think I could’ve made it better myself.

    1. 4 stars
I get what you mean! Burritos can be pretty basic but with the right spices, it can shine! 🌶️

  6. 4 stars
I’m skeptical about the sour cream. Can I just skip it?

  7. User avatar latoria.osinski98 says:

    5 stars
Yum! Next time I’ll try it with turkey instead of chicken. Thanks for the recipe!

    1. User avatar rene.kling61 says:

      3 stars
Turkey? Doesn’t that get dry? Chicken is juicer, but okay I guess.

    2. User avatar verena.block12 says:

      5 stars
Great idea! Turkey is more healthy too. Can’t wait to hear how it turns out!

  8. 4 stars
Simple and delicious! Perfect for busy weeknights.

  9. User avatar tonita.kris says:

    5 stars
These burritos are amazing! So easy to make and they taste delicious. My whole family loved them!

  10. 4 stars
Too spicy for me, but my husband loved them! He’s a fan of anything spicy!

  11. User avatar barton.towne2001 says:

    3 stars
I followed it and the tortillas stayed kind of soft? Maybe I didn’t cook long enough—3 minutes per side felt fast. Flavor was fine though.

  12. User avatar sharilyn.parisian1996 says:

    4 stars
The ingredient list is huge but in a good way. Mine got a little messy when rolling, but the crunch in the pan fixed my life.

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree—having a “big” ingredient list is what makes it feel like a real burrito. Also seam side down + skillet time is the move; I’ve had some get soggy before, but crisping them fixes everything.

  13. User avatar keiko.hegmann79 says:

    5 stars
These burritos are my new favorite! So easy to make and they taste amazing!

    1. User avatar chase.lebsack26 says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! These burritos are just the best! I always add more beans though, yum!

    2. 3 stars
They were okay, but they didn’t taste as good as I expected. Maybe I did something wrong?

  14. User avatar Hasimir Fenring says:

    4 stars
I used beef instead of chicken because that’s what I had. They turned out great too! Who needs chicken anyway?

  15. User avatar Frost Atronach says:

    5 stars
These burritos were a hit with my whole family! So easy to make! 🌯

  16. User avatar idalia.bode65 says:

    1 star
    Burritos are overrated. Pfft.

  17. 2 stars
I tried it once and the tortilla tore when rolling—probably because mine wasn’t warmed enough. Warming matters!

  18. 5 stars
    Burritos!!! Love them!!! ❤️

  19. User avatar reginald.nienow1967 says:

    4 stars
Good recipe, but I think it needs more spice. I added jalapenos and it was much better!

  20. 5 stars
These burritos are the best! So easy to make and so delicious!

  21. User avatar Faye Tallity says:

    1 star
Too many ingredients for me. I just like beans and cheese.

    1. User avatar Pasta Fasta says:

      5 stars
I get it! Sometimes simple is better. But you can always leave out anything you don’t like. Beans and cheese are great on their own!

    2. 3 stars
That’s boring! This recipe is so good with all the flavors. Adding more stuff makes it tasty, trust me!

  22. User avatar maren.mohr69 says:

    2 stars
I didn’t have salsa, so I used ketchup. Didn’t turn out great, but I guess that’s my fault.

  23. User avatar angel.gottlieb76 says:

    4 stars
Too much cheese? lol but hey, I did it anyway. 3-5 min per side is right—watch closely or they burn.

  24. User avatar rob.gleichner says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but 1 cup of cheese plus 1 cup chicken is a lot—mine got messy when rolling. Still delicious though.

  25. User avatar leon.homenick says:

    4 stars
Yum! Made these for dinner last night and my kids loved them! Will definitely make again.

  26. 3 stars
Who even eats beans? Yuck! I made it without and it was still okay.

  27. User avatar pierre.swaniawski says:

    1 star
Do you even need to cook the rice? Seems pointless 😕

    1. User avatar Rulindil says:

      4 stars
Yeah, you do have to cook the rice! If not, it won’t be tasty at all. 🤷‍♂️

  28. User avatar curtis.bailey says:

    2 stars
Easy to make but the chicken just drags it down. I prefer beef.

  29. User avatar bennett.rippin45 says:

    3 stars
Why not use corn instead of beans? Beans are gross. But not bad recipe.

  30. User avatar brent.ritchie33 says:

    5 stars
5/5 if you love cheese. I used extra because life is short. Also I wish it said how hot the skillet should be, but still worked.

  31. User avatar lorita.nienow83 says:

    5 stars
These burritos are amazing! My family loved them. 5 stars!

    1. User avatar trinidad.stoltenberg says:

      3 stars
They were ok, but my burritos always fall apart. Is there a secret to keeping them wrapped well?

    2. User avatar katharyn.upton50 says:

      5 stars
So glad to hear that! We love making these for family movie night.

  32. 5 stars
This burrito is so good! I added some hot sauce for a kick.

  33. User avatar florentino.nader says:

    2 stars
I followed this recipe exactly but my burritos fell apart. Not sure what went wrong. Maybe I added too much stuff?

  34. 4 stars
Didn’t have guacamole, but they still turned out good! Next time I’ll add more cheese.

  35. 3 stars
Why do you put guacamole in them? It’s better on the side, trust me. Just saying.

    1. User avatar Hotblack Desiato's bodyguard says:

      5 stars
I totally disagree! Guac in the burrito adds such a creamy texture. On the side just doesn’t cut it for me!

    2. User avatar heidy.hartmann says:

      2 stars
Honestly, I think putting guac inside is wasteful. It makes a mess! Better to dip for sure.

  36. User avatar wendell.leannon87 says:

    2 stars
I don’t trust any recipe that says “serve warm and enjoy” with no other tips 😂 How do you keep it from bursting? Also my cheese burned slightly.

  37. 2 stars
Meh, I tried it and it was just OK. I thought it would be more flavorful. Kids didn’t even want to eat it.

  38. User avatar Frankie and Benjy says:

    2 stars
Burrito is just the same as taco, what’s the difference? 🤔

  39. User avatar joey.johnson says:

    1 star
Didn’t work for me. The burritos kinda fell apart when I flipped them… maybe my skillet was too hot. Won’t try the crispy step again.

  40. 1 star
It’s a burrito. How hard can it be? Can we call this a recipe?

  41. 3 stars
I don’t know, I think the recipe is missing something. Maybe more spices? I added some taco seasoning and it was better.

    1. User avatar mariah.volkman says:

      4 stars
I totally agree! A little more seasoning would have made it pop even more. Also tried with some cumin and it was delish!

    2. User avatar sixta.breitenberg says:

      2 stars
But isn’t it a little too much with all that stuff? I mean, the original recipe seems good as it is. Taco seasoning? I dunno…

  42. User avatar hank.runolfsdottir82 says:

    3 stars
Is salsa really necessary? I’m not a fan. Just used cheese and beans.

  43. 2 stars
No way! Too many ingredients! It’s just a burrito!!

    1. 2 stars
But isn’t a burrito just rice and beans? Why all the fancy stuff? Lol

    2. User avatar tamesha.herman15 says:

      5 stars
I actually like a lot of ingredients in my burrito! It makes it more filling and tasty! 😋

  44. User avatar freeman.willms says:

    5 stars
These burritos hit the spot. I tossed the chicken with a little cumin and chili powder and it made a huge difference. Crisp outside + melty inside = perfect.

    1. User avatar janel.quigley26 says:

      3 stars
Hmm I like burritos, but I feel like “a little cumin and chili powder” is missing the whole point 😅 Also, are you using sour cream and guac inside or just for topping? Mine gets kinda soggy if I add everything at once.

    2. User avatar roseanne.boyer3 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! That crisp outside + melty inside combo is exactly what I look for. I’ve been trying to dial in the seasoning too—cumin + chili powder sounds spot on. I’m making these again this week.

  45. User avatar cassandra.blanda66 says:

    5 stars
I followed it exactly except I used monterey jack. The golden/crispy skillet step is the whole vibe. Will make again.

  46. User avatar porsche.stiedemann2016 says:

    4 stars
I don’t like lettuce in my burritos, so I just skipped it. Still good with just the chicken and cheese.

    1. User avatar Falmer Gloomlurker says:

      5 stars
Lettuce is a weird part of burritos anyway! Chicken and cheese sound yummy, that’s what I would do too!

  47. 5 stars
I made these for a party and they were gone in minutes! Will definitely make again!

  48. 4 stars
Pretty solid and straightforward. My only issue was the tortillas split a tiny bit, probably because I overfilled or didn’t warm them long enough. Still delicious though.

    1. User avatar ALTplusF4 says:

      5 stars
Yeah that makes sense—overfilling or not warming the tortillas enough can make them split right at the folds. Next time try warming them a bit longer (or 5–10 sec in the microwave) and go a touch lighter on the filling so they stay flexible. Glad they were still delicious though!

  49. User avatar Tennille Green says:

    5 stars
Burrito madness!! I added extra guac and it was AMAZING!

  50. User avatar jed.larkin says:

    5 stars
Honestly these are restaurant-level. Crisped seam side down like the instructions said and they held together way better than my usual burritos.

  51. User avatar Lumberjack says:

    3 stars
Honestly, I thought these would be better. The rice felt a bit dry.

  52. User avatar siu.cormier88 says:

    2 stars
Meh, I just slapped some stuff in a tortilla, but it was ok.

  53. User avatar cherelle.ankunding1992 says:

    4 stars
Super simple recipe! I love how quick it is. Perfect for weeknight dinners. Thanks!

    1. User avatar Thufir Hawat says:

      5 stars
Totally agree! It’s such an easy recipe. I made it last night and my family loved it! 😍

  54. 4 stars
I’m skeptical about the “quarter of each ingredient” part—seems like a lot of wet stuff. But it actually worked.

  55. User avatar Humma Kavula says:

    2 stars
Too many ingredients! I just want a simple burrito.

  56. User avatar irvin.deckow0 says:

    4 stars
Solid base recipe. I added a little cumin and garlic powder to the chicken because plain chicken felt kinda… meh, but the build method is great.

  57. User avatar Ma'randru-jo says:

    2 stars
I love burritos! But where’s the beef? This recipe is missing meat options.

    1. User avatar angela.wilkinson42 says:

      3 stars
I dunno, but chicken is good too. I mean, who needs beef when you’ve got all that cheese?

    2. User avatar romelia.lubowitz1974 says:

      5 stars
You can totally add beef if you want! Just cook it up and throw it in there. More meat = more yum!

  58. User avatar orlando.purdy59 says:

    4 stars
Simple and actually pretty solid. I followed it pretty much exactly—couldn’t believe how fast they cooked when they’re seam side down.

  59. User avatar geoWizard says:

    5 stars
    Burrito time! 🌯

  60. User avatar arielle.carter says:

    4 stars
Simple and tasty! Will definitely make again!

    1. User avatar preston.halvorson says:

      5 stars
I agree! These burritos are super easy to make and taste great!

  61. User avatar hassie.heller41 says:

    4 stars
Can you make this in advance or does it get soggy? Asking for a friend.

  62. User avatar w00d_ch0p says:

    2 stars
This is basically just a wrap. Why call it burrito?

    1. User avatar doug.romaguera1976 says:

      3 stars
That’s a wrap y’all! But real burritos have beans and stuff, I’d call it a lazy burrito.

    2. 4 stars
It’s a burrito because it’s wrapped! Just because it’s simple doesn’t mean it can’t be called one. 😄

  63. User avatar rolf.white says:

    2 stars
I tried this and the burritos fell apart 😭 maybe my tortillas were too small or I didn’t fold tight enough. Flavor was good but presentation wasn’t.

  64. User avatar Frost Atronach says:

    3 stars
I dunno, they were a bit bland for my taste. Needs more spice!

    1. User avatar darin.padberg says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! A little cayenne or some jalapeños can really kick it up a notch. You should try adding some hot sauce next time!

    2. 3 stars
But, like, isn’t burrito suppose to be sort of mild? I think why not just add some flavor after, like hotter salsa?

  65. User avatar Hotblack Desiato's bodyguard says:

    5 stars
Yum! Can’t get enough of these. My go-to recipe!

  66. User avatar columbus.kihn88 says:

    3 stars
I messed up the folding part and it fell apart 😭. Gonna try again!

  67. 5 stars
My kids loved it! They even helped mix the fillings. Great recipe!

    1. User avatar edyth.carroll1959 says:

      5 stars
Sounds yummy! My kids are picky, but this might win them over. Thanks for sharing!

  68. User avatar donte.mayert says:

    2 stars
I followed it, but mine got soggy—probably because I used too much salsa. Also, 3-5 minutes per side felt short for my stove.

  69. User avatar dominque.schaden90 says:

    4 stars
The guacamole + sour cream combo is kinda rich 😅 I liked it, but I’d cut sour cream in half for my taste.

    1. User avatar kerstin.boyer says:

      5 stars
Totally get you 😄 sour cream can make it super heavy. Cutting it down (or swapping in plain Greek yogurt) is a great move!

    2. 3 stars
I think the sour cream is the whole point tho. If you cut it in half it won’t taste right… or maybe I’m wrong? 😅

  70. User avatar ricky.wilkinson95 says:

    3 stars
I don’t know why it says to cook them in a skillet. I just use the microwave and it’s fine.

  71. User avatar pearlie.bernhard says:

    4 stars
Honestly, pretty easy to follow. But I like spicy, so added jalapeños.

  72. User avatar simon.feil52 says:

    5 stars
Super easy weeknight meal. I used leftover rice and rotisserie chicken and it tasted way better than I expected.

    1. User avatar leighann.greenfelder says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—using leftover rice + rotisserie chicken makes it way faster and tastier. I do the same thing, and mine always comes out crispy on the outside. 🔥

  73. User avatar kayla.vonrueden says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about the “3–5 minutes per side” part—mine took longer to get golden. Also I think 1 cup guacamole is way too much, it made it a bit messy. But flavor was good.

    1. User avatar marty.hill says:

      4 stars
Totally get you—3–5 min can be way too short depending on your pan heat. Mine took closer to 7 because the tortilla was thicker.

  74. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly and it was good, but my tortillas got a little soggy inside after a few minutes. Maybe I should toast them longer before serving?

  75. User avatar nestor.kertzmann40 says:

    2 stars
1 cup salsa per burrito seems like… a lot? I did it anyway and now my hands are always gonna be salsa-y lol.

  76. 1 star
Why would you put sour cream and guac inside before crisping? Mine basically melted into a mess… Won’t make like this again.

  77. User avatar bernardo.bartell1982 says:

    4 stars
Honestly, 3–5 minutes per side is perfect. I like them golden and a little blistered. Would make again.

    1. User avatar debroah.jast1991 says:

      5 stars
Yes! Golden and a bit blistered is exactly how I like them too—3–5 min per side really hits that crispy spot.

  78. 4 stars
I added some corn and it was great! Never thought to put corn in burritos.

  79. User avatar Genna Schumm says:

    5 stars
These burritos are amazing! My kids loved them.

  80. 2 stars
I make burritos all the time, but this seems way too easy. Are you sure it works? Like, are the instructions legit? 🤔

  81. User avatar Nadene Morar says:

    5 stars
These came out super crispy on the skillet and the filling ratio was spot on. I added a squeeze of lime and it was perfect.

    1. 5 stars
Yes! The skillet crisp is everything. I’ve been doing a little squeeze of lime too and it totally wakes up the salsa/beans. Spot on call with the filling ratio 😄

  82. User avatar reuben.gulgowski60 says:

    3 stars
I followed the instructions exactly, but my tortillas just wouldn’t crisp up. Maybe my skillet wasn’t hot enough.

    1. User avatar tammera.weber2013 says:

      3 stars
Mine never crisped either. I think it’s the tortillas—if they’re too soft or old they won’t brown right. I tried medium too long and still meh. Maybe try higher heat, but watch so they don’t burn.

    2. User avatar tameika.pollich says:

      4 stars
That sounds frustrating—if it’s not getting golden, your skillet may be too cool. I usually go a bit hotter than medium and press them lightly after flipping. Also make sure the seam side goes down first so it seals and browns.

  83. 5 stars
Delicious! Made these for my family, and they all loved them. Will definitely make again.

    1. User avatar tana.spencer85 says:

      5 stars
Glad to hear your family enjoyed them! They’re my go-to for quick dinners. 🥳

    2. 2 stars
I don’t know, burritos seem too messy. I prefer my food neat. 😕

  84. 4 stars
Pretty solid and easy. I thought 1 cup lettuce per burrito was gonna be too much, but it actually balances the cheese/sour cream nicely.

  85. 4 stars
Simple ingredients, great results. I like that it’s customizable—next time I’m swapping black beans for pinto and adding corn.

  86. User avatar allena.leffler1969 says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have lettuce so I used cabbage and it still slapped. Crispy outside, soft inside.

  87. 3 stars
My burritos leaked salsa like crazy… I think I overfilled and didn’t fold tight enough. Flavor was on point, handling needs work.

    1. User avatar natalia.purdy90 says:

      5 stars
Yeah, that happens—overfilling is sneaky. Next time try a little less salsa (or even drain it), and make sure you tuck the sides in tight before rolling. Also seam-side down like the instructions say helps keep everything together.

  88. User avatar lajuana.fisher2020 says:

    2 stars
1 cup lettuce?! Bruh. I used like half a cup and it was plenty. Other than that, good flavor combo.

Haha fair point—1 cup lettuce is definitely “a lot” depending on how you shred it. I think the idea was just to keep it crunchy, but half a cup would probably be totally perfect.

Nah, 1 cup lettuce is way too much for my liking. I’d rather add more salsa or maybe some corn. But hey if you like it, go for it.

These came out perfectly crispy on the outside and still melty inside. I added a pinch of cumin to the filling and it made a huge difference.

Yes!! Crispy outside + melty inside is exactly how I like them. I love that you tried cumin—adds so much warmth to the filling.

Mine were pretty good, but I think I overfilled them, so they didn’t really get crispy. Also I used taco seasoning instead of cumin… maybe that’s why. Still tasted great though.

Honestly this felt a little bland until I added hot sauce and a squeeze of lime. Otherwise it’s an easy burrito assembly. Also my lettuce made everything soggy lol.

Totally get that—burritos can be kinda bland without some acid/heat. Hot sauce + lime sounds like the fix. And yeah, lettuce sogging is real… I usually add it right before rolling or keep it separate until eating.

Okay, the ingredients list is basically my comfort food in burrito form. I’d eat this every week.

Simple and tasty! I used leftover chicken and it saved me so much time. Next time I might add corn or peppers.

Leftover chicken is the best—totally agree it saves a ton of time. Adding corn or peppers sounds amazing for some extra crunch and flavor. I’m stealing that idea 😄

I liked the filling ratios, but mine got a bit soggy. Next time I’ll warm the tortillas less and maybe drain the salsa more.

Totally feel you—soggy burritos usually come from too much moisture in the salsa/lettuce. I’ve started warming tortillas just until pliable, then I let the salsa sit in a strainer for a few minutes. Helps a lot.

I’m skeptical about “quarter of each ingredient” — that’s a lot of filling distribution to get right. Mine were a bit lopsided but still tasty.

Totally get you—“quarter of each ingredient” sounds like a math test mid-burrito 😅. I eyeball it too and mine are always a little lopsided but still delicious.

Not bad, but my tortillas kept cracking when I rolled them. Next time I’ll warm them longer so they’re more flexible.

These came out perfect—crispy on the outside and still really packed inside. I used a little extra salsa because why not. Definitely saving this.

    1. 5 stars
Yes!! Crispy outside burritos are the best. I also do the seam-side down—keeps everything together. Saving this too 🌯🔥

I tried it and mine didn’t get super crispy 😕 I think my skillet was too high? Also I used “extra salsa” like you and it was kinda messy, but still tasty. Maybe I’ll pat the beans/rice dry next time.

Pretty straightforward and honestly hard to mess up. I didn’t have guacamole so I used avocado mash and it still slapped.

Right? Burritos are basically a choose-your-own-adventure. Avocado mash is close enough—if it tastes good, it counts. Crispy tortilla + melty cheese = win.
