Blackberry Chocolate Crisp

May 27, 2026

When summer blackberries are in season, there’s nothing more satisfying than transforming them into a warm, bubbling dessert. Add a touch of indulgence with rich chocolate, and you get the irresistible blackberry chocolate crisp. This dessert takes the classic fruit crisp and gives it a decadent twist that’s both comforting and impressive.

The beauty of this crisp lies in its simplicity. Juicy, tart blackberries pair beautifully with the deep flavor of dark chocolate. As they bake, the berries soften and release their juices, creating a jammy base that contrasts perfectly with the melted chocolate chunks. On top, you get a buttery, golden crumble made from oats, brown sugar, and just enough spice to keep things interesting.

This dish is easy enough for a weeknight dessert but special enough to serve at a dinner party. The contrast of warm fruit and chocolate with the crunchy topping makes every bite satisfying. It’s a little bit rustic, a little bit luxurious, and completely delicious.

Blackberry chocolate crisp also happens to be very flexible. If you have raspberries or blueberries on hand, feel free to toss them in. You can even swap the dark chocolate for milk or white chocolate, depending on your taste. Add a handful of chopped nuts to the topping if you like extra crunch.

Serve it warm straight from the oven with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a spoonful of whipped cream. The cold creaminess against the warm, gooey filling is pure magic. It’s also surprisingly good chilled, making it a great dessert to enjoy over a couple of days.

What makes this dessert so memorable is the balance of flavors and textures. The tartness of the berries, the sweetness of the crisp topping, and the richness of the chocolate all come together beautifully. It’s cozy, crowd-pleasing, and has that homemade charm that makes people go back for seconds.

Whether you’re baking for guests or just treating yourself, blackberry chocolate crisp is one of those easy desserts that delivers every time. It’s simple, soulful, and exactly what dessert should be.

Can you use frozen blackberries? I have some in my freezer but not sure if they’ll be good.

  2. 2 stars
I followed this step by step but my berries got all mushy. What gives?

Sounds like you might have overmixed the berries! They can get mushy if they’re too squished. Maybe try stirring gently next time.

    2. 3 stars
Mushy berries?? I thought they were supposed to get all juicy and delicious! Did you use fresh or frozen?

Super easy to make! I added some nuts on top for extra crunch. Highly recommend!

I tried it too! But I didn’t like the nuts, made it too crunchy. Kinda defeats the soft fruit part, ya know?

5 stars!!! Love it! My grandma used to make something like this but with blueberries. Anyway, delicious!

It was too sweet for my taste. I think you should reduce the sugar amounts.

Didn’t work for me, the topping was mushy. Should it really be 1/2 cup butter? That seems too much.

I had the same issue! Maybe cut down on the butter next time or use less oats? Just a thought.
