Banana Crumb Muffins

October 3, 2023

Banana crumb muffins are one of those comforting baked goods that feel like a warm hug. They’re soft, fluffy, and packed with banana flavor, but it’s the crumb topping that takes them to the next level. That sweet, buttery layer with just the right amount of crunch adds texture and makes these muffins feel like they came straight from a fancy café.

What makes banana muffins so special is how they turn overripe bananas into something delicious. Instead of tossing out those spotted bananas on your counter, they become the star of the show. The riper the banana, the sweeter and more flavorful your muffins will be. It’s also a great way to reduce food waste while making something your whole family will love.

The batter comes together quickly with pantry staples like flour, sugar, eggs, baking powder, and a splash of vanilla. Adding sour cream or yogurt helps keep the muffins moist and tender. You don’t even need a mixer—just a couple of bowls and a spoon will do. The real magic happens when you sprinkle the crumb topping over each muffin before baking. Made from flour, butter, and brown sugar, the topping bakes into a golden, slightly crispy layer that perfectly contrasts the soft muffin underneath.

Banana crumb muffins are perfect for breakfast, brunch, or as a grab-and-go snack. They also freeze well, so you can make a batch and save some for later. Serve them warm with a pat of butter or a drizzle of honey for an extra treat. You can even toss in some chopped walnuts or chocolate chips if you’re feeling indulgent.

There’s something incredibly satisfying about baking your own muffins, especially when they’re as easy and delicious as these. Whether you’re baking for your family or just want something cozy with your morning coffee, banana crumb muffins hit the spot every time.

While Banana Crumb Muffins may not be the healthiest option out there, they do offer some nutritional value. Bananas are a great source of potassium, which can help regulate blood pressure and support heart health. Additionally, these muffins contain fiber and provide a good amount of energy to keep you going throughout the day.

Made these today—so easy and the banana flavor is super comforting. The crumb topping actually gives a nice little crunch. Will definitely bake again.

These muffins are amazing! I added some walnuts and they turned out perfect!

  3. User avatar joey.halvorson says:

There are way too many steps for muffins. I like my quick and easy. Guess I won’t be making these.

  4. 3 stars
Okay, but why do we need both white and brown sugar? Seems unnecessary. I just used brown sugar.

    1. User avatar danita.miller51 says:

      2 stars
I dunno, I think one sugar is enough. Why complicate it? Just seems like a waste to me.

    2. User avatar ardella.wisoky says:

      5 stars
Brown sugar adds moisture and a deeper flavor! That’s why both are used. Trust me, you’ll love the result!

  5. User avatar maris.abshire says:

Baking soda + baking powder combo—does this really rise? Mine barely puffed. Flavor is fine, but it’s more like banana bread muffins.

  6. User avatar brianna.hettinger6 says:

    3 stars
They were okay… I’ve had better banana muffins elsewhere. Could use more flavor.

    1. User avatar zane.crooks66 says:

      4 stars
I think adding more spices like nutmeg or vanilla could really boost the flavor! Just a thought.

    2. User avatar marcus.wiegand64 says:

      3 stars
But these muffins are good! Maybe you just had some super special ones before?

  7. 5 stars
Loved it! My kids ate them all! 😍

  8. User avatar Dr. Erasmo Mayer says:

    4 stars
Pretty good overall. I used slightly bigger bananas and ended up with a bit thicker batter, but they still baked up nicely. Could’ve used a touch more cinnamon in the topping for my taste.

  9. User avatar ronny.yundt7 says:

    5 stars
These came out super moist and the crumb topping is legit. I used a bit more cinnamon and they smelled like a bakery. Will make again!

can I use oat flour instead of regular flour???

    1. User avatar rickey.dicki42 says:

      2 stars
No way! Regular flour is a must for this recipe. Oat flour might ruin it.

    2. User avatar rolf.maggio1987 says:

      4 stars
Yeah, you can! Oat flour should work fine. It may change the texture a bit though.

  11. User avatar fletcher.lindgren says:

    5 stars
Love these muffins! They made my kitchen smell wonderful. My kids gobbled them up in no time. Definitely making again!

  12. 5 stars
These muffins are AMAZING! So moist and flavorful. Will definitely make again!

  13. User avatar raylene.kuhic62 says:

    3 stars
This was an ok recipe, but I think it could use more banana flavor. I used only 2!

  14. 4 stars
Used 4 bananas instead of 3. A bit too sweet but still good! Also baked for 25 min.

    1. User avatar Paula Nancy Millstone Jennings says:

      3 stars
I think 4 bananas might be too much for the recipe, but I’m glad you liked it! Maybe try it with 3 next time? 🤔

  15. User avatar Feyd-Rautha Rabban says:

    5 stars
Man, my kids love these! They disappear in seconds! Thanks for the recipe. 5 stars!

  16. 2 stars
I don’t know, my muffins turned out kinda weird. Maybe I mixed it wrong? The texture was off.

  17. 4 stars
Pretty good comfort muffins. Mine were a little too sweet with both white and brown sugar, so next time I’ll cut the white sugar down a bit.

  18. User avatar moshe.stracke45 says:

    5 stars
These muffins are a hit at my house! Super easy to make and they taste amazing. Definitely a 5!

  19. User avatar sharonda.wilkinson says:

    3 stars
I thought the recipe was too sweet. Maybe less sugar next time?

    1. User avatar zack.zieme1975 says:

      4 stars
I thought it was perfect! The sweetness is what makes them so delicious. Maybe you just need to adjust your taste buds a bit? 😋

  20. User avatar jimmy.koepp56 says:

    3 stars
I followed the measurements but the batter felt thick like cookie dough. Maybe my bananas were smaller? They tasted great though.

    1. User avatar charlotte.reynolds2009 says:

      5 stars
Totally possible—if the bananas were smaller (or more dry), you’ll end up with less “wet” and the batter can get thick like cookie dough. Next time, I’d mash the bananas really well and consider adding 1–2 tbsp milk (or a splash of water) if it looks too stiff.

    2. User avatar luis.konopelski90 says:

      4 stars
Huh, I made these and it was never cookie-dough thick for me. I’m thinking maybe you overmixed at step 5? Also are you sure you used melted butter and not creamed? Either way—great that the flavor still came out good!

  21. User avatar beverley.bashirian59 says:

    3 stars
I dunno, mine came out super dense. Maybe I did somethin wrong? Not gonna blame the recipe tho. 3 stars for effort.

    1. User avatar Lesley Bode says:

      4 stars
Hey, don’t feel too bad! Sometimes it just depends on how ripe the bananas are or if we mix too much. Yours might still be tasty! 🍌

  22. User avatar Leto Atreides says:

    4 stars
My muffins overflowed! I must’ve put too much batter in. Whoops.

  23. User avatar rey.marvin1951 says:

    2 stars
Not sure if I trust a banana muffin recipe with no vanilla… just sayin.

  24. User avatar donovan.gerhold60 says:

    2 stars
They’re okay… not gonna lie. I think 3 bananas might be a lot? Mine tasted slightly sweet and a little “bread-y.”

    1. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

      3 stars
Huh, mine are always amazing. I use extra mashed bananas and it comes out super moist. Maybe you overmixed or cooked too long? 18-20 mins seems short but it matters.

    2. User avatar hermine.dibbert says:

      4 stars
Totally get you—3 bananas can be a lot depending on how big/sweet they are. If your batter turned out a bit “bread-y,” you might try mashing and using slightly less banana next time or reducing the white sugar a touch.

  25. User avatar patricia.emard34 says:

    3 stars
They were okay, but kinda dense. Maybe I did something wrong?

  26. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    5 stars
These muffins are amazing! So fluffy and full of flavor. I added some walnuts too and they were a hit! 🍌

  27. User avatar marcos.treutel says:

    1 star
I burnt mine, lol. I guess I gotta watch the oven more closely next time. Also the bananas were too ripe for my taste. 1 star.

  28. User avatar hilario.fadel says:

    4 stars
Mmm, these sound nice. I like bananas but not too many. Might try making them with less sugar.

    1. User avatar Dr. Jerrell Emard says:

      3 stars
Bananas are already sweet, why add more sugar? But hey, to each their own! Good luck with the muffins!

    2. 4 stars
Less sugar sounds like a great idea! I always find banana recipes too sweet. Let us know how it turns out!

  29. 2 stars
I messed up and used salted butter—oops. They were still good, just a little too salty for my taste. Cinnamon helped balance it out.

    1. User avatar emmanuel.botsford says:

      5 stars
Oh no 😅 but honestly that cinnamon move is smart. Next time maybe slightly reduce the salt in the batter, since salted butter brings its own salt.

    2. User avatar milissa.robel says:

      4 stars
I always use salted butter by accident too lol. I think 1/2 tsp salt might be too much if butter is salted—maybe try unsalted or cut the salt. Still sounds yummy though!

  30. 2 stars
I don’t get why people love bananas so much. Muffins were okay but not great…

    1. User avatar cornelius.parisian1978 says:

      3 stars
Bananas are overrated, I agree. But muffins? They can be better with other fruit! Try blueberry next time.

    2. User avatar nicholas.quigley46 says:

      5 stars
I don’t know how you can’t love bananas! They give muffins such a nice flavor. Maybe try them with chocolate chips next time!

  31. User avatar rudolf.mitchell26 says:

    5 stars
These muffins were absolutely delicious! The crumb topping made them so special. Will make again for sure!

  32. User avatar werner.raynor says:

    1 star
Too complicated, I just wanted a quick breakfast.

  33. 5 stars
Yummy muffins! Added some walnuts for crunch. Will definitely make again! 🥳

  34. User avatar lauretta.nader says:

    3 stars
I don’t know, the recipe seems a bit off to me. Why so much sugar? It’s kinda sweet for my taste. 🤔

  35. User avatar Eddie the Computer says:

    4 stars
The cinnamon crumble is everything. Mine smelled like autumn the whole time. I only had salted butter so I reduced the added salt (maybe that helped).

  36. User avatar tierra.rohan says:

    2 stars
Followed the recipe exactly but the muffins came out flat. What did I do wrong?!

  37. User avatar brianna.block says:

    5 stars
Yum! Banana crumbs were delish! First time baking and this was easy peasy. Thanks for sharing!

  38. User avatar nick.stoltenberg6 says:

    2 stars
I followed the recipe but my muffins turned out flat. What did I do wrong? Maybe I mixed too much? 😟

  39. 1 star
I thought muffins were supposed to be fluffy? Mine came out flat and sad. 😢

  40. 3 stars
Muffins are okay, but where’s the chocolate? They would be better with chocolate chips in them.

    1. User avatar aubrey.gutmann75 says:

      2 stars
But chocolate doesn’t really go with bananas, does it? It’s a classic combo but maybe not here.

    2. User avatar julianne.lakin1962 says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! Chocolate chips would take these muffins to a whole new level! 🍫

  41. User avatar Effrafax of Wug says:

    2 stars
I thought muffins were supposed to be like cake? These felt…different. Not my fav.

  42. 5 stars
Yum! I used coconut sugar instead of white sugar. It was still sweet and so good!

  43. User avatar Aurelion Sol says:

    2 stars
I don’t know what I did wrong, but mine came out too dense. Maybe I mixed too much? Not sure.

    1. User avatar Rocco Mosciski says:

      4 stars
Don’t worry! I think overmixing can definitely make them dense. Try mixing just until combined next time.

  44. 5 stars
    yum!!!

  45. 4 stars
375F felt a little hot for my oven—mine browned fast on top, but centers were still fine. I’d start checking closer to 16 minutes next batch.

  46. User avatar iliana.mayer98 says:

    2 stars
I followed it exactly and they stuck to the liners anyway (I swear the liners were fine). Taste is good though—sweet, banana-y, and the topping smells amazing.

  47. User avatar kip.kris1955 says:

    4 stars
Love how easy these are. The topping is the star. Next time I might add chopped walnuts for texture.

  48. User avatar Chanda Lear says:

    4 stars
Bananas and muffins, a match made in heaven. Made them twice already! I used olive oil instead of butter, worked great! 😊

    1. User avatar joana.armstrong28 says:

      2 stars
I don’t know…olive oil? Isn’t butter the best? Sounds weird to me. 🤔

    2. User avatar Death Hound says:

      5 stars
I love the idea of using olive oil! It’s healthier too. Gonna try it next time! 🌟

  49. User avatar geraldine.donnelly1953 says:

    5 stars
Yum! The crunch topping is divine! I’ll be making these every week! 5 stars!

  50. 5 stars
Yummy! But had to use 4 bananas coz mine were small! Still turned out good. 👌

    1. 5 stars
Glad to hear it worked out! I think using more bananas can actually make it taste better. 🍌👍

  51. User avatar leigha.pollich2014 says:

    5 stars
These muffins are amazing! I made them for my family and they devoured them in minutes. Thank you!

  52. 3 stars
I dunno, mine came out a bit dry. Did I do something wrong? My bananas were really ripe.

    1. User avatar Saruman the White says:

      3 stars
Idk, I think too many bananas might make it soggy? I always peel mine when they get too ripe. Just saying!

    2. User avatar scarlett.schmidt says:

      4 stars
Maybe try adding a bit more butter next time? That can help with moisture. Your bananas should’ve been fine, but checking the baking time is good too.

  53. User avatar rodrick.franecki says:

    2 stars
Are these gluten free? Can I just substitute and it work?

  54. User avatar beckie.wuckert says:

    4 stars
Really tasty! I added some walnuts for extra crunch. Will make again!

  55. 2 stars
I don’t understand why people love banana muffins so much. This recipe just seems so basic…2/5

  56. User avatar muriel.bahringer says:

    3 stars
I don’t know…they were okay. My kids liked them, but I found them too sweet. Maybe less sugar next time?

  57. User avatar princess.friesen39 says:

    5 stars
Delicious! Made them for my friends and they loved it too! #BananaLove

  58. 1 star
Muffins? Huh, dunno if I’d eat those. Don’t understand the point of banana in baked goods lol.

  59. User avatar Eldora Lockman says:

    4 stars
This recipe is good but why do they say preheat to 375 and then bake 18–20—mine took closer to 24. Could be my oven, I guess. Still worth it.

  60. User avatar su.fisher says:

    5 stars
These muffins are so delicious! The perfect balance of sweetness. My kids love them.

    1. User avatar chung.morissette says:

      5 stars
I’m glad your kids love them! I’ve made these before and they disappeared fast! Such a great recipe!

    2. User avatar Hollis Barrows DVM says:

      3 stars
I tried making these but they came out too sweet for my taste. Maybe less sugar next time?

  61. User avatar halflife4 says:

    2 stars
I followed the recipe and they didn’t rise much. Could my bananas be too ripe/wet? Tasted good, just flatter muffins than expected.

  62. User avatar Shaddam Corrino IV says:

    5 stars
Not gonna lie, I almost skipped the topping step, but I’m glad I didn’t. The texture contrast is awesome. Perfect with coffee.

    1. User avatar van.murazik50 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! That crumb topping makes them so much better. I also usually hesitate on extra steps, but the crunch vs soft muffin is chef’s kiss. 🙌

    2. User avatar elvira.harris says:

      4 stars
I did the topping but I think I mashed the bananas too much… still tasty tho. Coffee pairing is spot on. Would’ve loved a little more cinnamon maybe.

  63. User avatar neville.boyle97 says:

    5 stars
These muffins are honestly the best! Super moist and delicious, my kids devoured them!

  64. 3 stars
Not bad, but I’m confused about the topping—when it says cut in 1 tbsp butter, I didn’t get that “coarse cornmeal” texture. Still tasted fine though.

  65. User avatar Alia Atreides says:

    3 stars
Can someone tell me why do you need both brown and white sugar? Seems like overkill to me.

  66. User avatar yi.schowalter1995 says:

    4 stars
Okay, I added chocolate chips because I don’t like just bananas and they were bomb! 4 stars! 🍌🍫

  67. User avatar Manuel Labor says:

I used chocolate chips instead of the crumb topping. Gotta say, it was bomb! 4 stars!
