Strawberry Basil Lemonade

May 22, 2025

Strawberry basil lemonade is a refreshing summer beverage that combines the sweetness of ripe strawberries, the tartness of fresh lemons, and the aromatic, herbaceous flavor of basil. This twist on classic lemonade is an ideal way to quench your thirst on hot days, offering a deliciously unique and flavorful drink that’s perfect for any outdoor gathering, picnic, or just a relaxing afternoon.

To make this vibrant drink, begin by preparing a simple syrup. In a saucepan, combine equal parts sugar and water, heating it until the sugar dissolves completely. Add a few sprigs of fresh basil to the syrup and let it simmer for a few minutes to infuse the flavor. Once done, remove from heat and allow the basil to steep, letting the aromatic oils infuse the syrup.

While the syrup cools, blend fresh strawberries until smooth. You can strain the puree if you prefer a smoother texture, but leaving it as is adds a bit more body and rustic charm to the lemonade. Squeeze fresh lemons to extract the juice, making sure to remove any seeds.

Once your basil-infused syrup has cooled, combine it with the strawberry puree and lemon juice in a large pitcher. Stir well to combine all the flavors, and add cold water or sparkling water, depending on your preference for a still or fizzy drink. Taste and adjust the sweetness with more syrup if needed.

Serve the strawberry basil lemonade over ice, garnished with a few fresh basil leaves and strawberry slices for a burst of color. For a fun twist, add a splash of sparkling water for a fizzy finish, or even a splash of gin or rum for an adult version.

This strawberry basil lemonade is the perfect balance of sweet, tangy, and herbaceous, making it a refreshing and unique summer drink that will keep you cool all season long.

I followed it pretty much exactly, but I used a little less sugar and it was still sweet enough. Love the color too!

Why would I put basil in lemonade? Sounds disgusting. Stick to the classic, people.

So yummy! But I think maybe half a cup of sugar is too much. Next time I’ll use less.

    1. User avatar dominique.fay says:

      5 stars
I think half a cup is perfect! It balances the tartness of the lemons. 😊

    2. 3 stars
Less sugar? Nah, I like it sweet! But do what you like, I guess.

Not gonna lie, the basil flavor was overpowering for me. Also I didn’t strain well and I regretted it lol. Might try again with less basil.

Strawberries and basil?! Sounds weird but it actually works! I was skeptical, but now I’m a believer! 4 stars!

  7. User avatar stefani.kunde37 says:

Eh, it was okay. I prefer my drinks not to taste like salad. Not a fan of basil.

  8. User avatar modesto.runte95 says:

    4 stars
Yum!! Next time I will try it with mint instead to see if that’s better. I didn’t have enough basil.

Mint sounds interesting! I bet it’ll add a refreshing twist! Let us know how it turns out!

  9. User avatar sanjuana.jacobi67 says:

I was skeptical about basil in lemonade, but wow—works really well. Straining makes it way smoother. Next time I’ll add extra strawberry for more flavor.

    1. User avatar Claude Lynch says:

      2 stars
I dunno, I think lemonade should just be lemony, not all this basil stuff. Sounds weird to me.

I totally agree! This drink is so refreshing, especially on a hot day! 🌞

  16. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

My blender didn’t fully smooth the strawberries, but I strained anyway and it came out fine. Still, I’d blend longer next time.

  17. 4 stars
I love strawberry lemonade but never thought to add basil. It’s a bit weird but surprisingly good!

  18. User avatar toby.abshire says:

    3 stars
Mine came out a bit too tart—probably my lemons were extra sharp. Next time I’ll start with 1/3 cup sugar first and adjust.

  19. User avatar stevie.vandervort says:

    3 stars
Followed exactly but my blender mixture separated? Like the strawberry and basil went uneven. Still tasted fine, just not as smooth as expected.

  20. 3 stars
I think it needed more sugar. It was a bit tart for my taste.

  21. User avatar mariana.kirlin30 says:

    5 stars
This drink is AMAZING! So refreshing for summer! 🌞

  22. User avatar Charles Darwin says:

    4 stars
Tried it today and it was honestly great. I strained it longer than the recipe says because I like it super smooth—worth it. Would make again for sure.

    1. User avatar marcelo.hagenes says:

      3 stars
I strained once and it was… fine? But maybe I should go longer like you said. Also, 2–3 lemons sounds random—mine needed more juice.

    2. User avatar moises.ohara35 says:

      5 stars
Love this! I’m the same way—extra straining makes it feel so polished. Glad it was still worth it 👏

  23. User avatar ramon.homenick74 says:

    2 stars
Basil lemonade? weird. But I guess I’ll give it a shot.

    1. 5 stars
Honestly it surprised me too—basil adds this fresh, herbal vibe, not like “weird” at all. If you’re unsure, use a little less basil the first time and adjust sugar/lemon to taste.

  24. 2 stars
The ingredient list is simple but the basil can be overpowering. I’d probably chop the basil a bit or use less than 1/4 cup unless you really love that herby taste. Otherwise it tastes like smoothie pretending to be lemonade.

    1. User avatar Ashleigh Beer says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—1/4 cup basil can be *a lot*. I usually chop it finely and start with like 2 tbsp, then add more if I want. Also agree it can end up tasting weirdly “green” if you overdo it.

    2. User avatar laverne.corwin54 says:

      4 stars
Lol smoothie pretending lemonade is exactly it 😂 I followed it once and my whole cup tasted like toothpaste basil. Next time I’m gonna use less basil and maybe squeeze the lemons more carefully. Thanks for the heads up!

  25. User avatar tracy.little72 says:

    2 stars
I think 1/4 cup basil is too much—mine tasted kinda like salad. Next time I’ll go lighter on the basil.

    1. 5 stars
Good call! Basil can get overpowering fast—next time I’d try 1–2 tbsp and taste as you go.

  26. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    4 stars
The instructions are straightforward, but 1/2 cup lemon juice from 2-3 lemons feels all over the place depending on lemon size. Mine was stronger than expected, so I added extra water.

    1. User avatar julian.crooks says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—lemons vary a lot. I usually juice them first and then measure, otherwise it can be way too tart. Adding water like you did is the perfect fix.

  27. User avatar Comedians says:

    5 stars
This turned out amazing! The strawberry and basil combo is so refreshing for summer. Definitely a 5-star recipe!

  28. User avatar blair.wilkinson says:

    2 stars
I used way more basil than 1/4 cup because I love it. Big mistake—overpowered the whole drink. Learn from me 😅

  29. 3 stars
This lemonade is just okay. I think I might prefer regular lemonade instead.

  30. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    5 stars
This lemonade is amazing! The basil adds a unique twist to the classic recipe. I can’t believe how refreshing it is!

  31. User avatar Kirk Kuhlman says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have basil, so I used mint instead and it was still delicious! Gonna make this again.

  32. 2 stars
Didn’t have fresh basil. Used dry, made it weird. Lesson learned, I guess.

    1. User avatar Miss Meghan Orn says:

      4 stars
Yeah, dry basil is just not the same! Fresh really makes a difference. Don’t worry, we all learn the hard way sometimes.

  33. User avatar estell.zemlak38 says:

    4 stars
I was skeptical about the basil, but it really does work! Who knew? I loved it!

  34. User avatar Frostbite Spider says:

    3 stars
Strawberry-mint lemonade is way better. But this one is okay I guess.

  35. 4 stars
The “2-3 lemons” part is a little vague. I had small lemons and ended up adding another one. Maybe specify by tablespoons?

  36. User avatar jesusita.anderson says:

    2 stars
Basil in lemonade? idk. I tried it once and it was weird. Maybe I just got unlucky with the lemons.

  37. 5 stars
Super easy recipe! Just mix stuff. I added sugar like 2 times more tho haha. Very sweet now 🙂

  38. User avatar kathlyn.dicki2017 says:

    3 stars
I don’t get why people rave about this. It was okay, but I’ve had better lemonade.

    1. 5 stars
I totally disagree! This lemonade is da bomb! The strawberry and basil combo is so refreshing, you just gotta give it another try.

    2. User avatar pete.graham95 says:

      3 stars
Honestly, I thought it was just ok too. Maybe my taste buds are broken, but it didn’t wow me like others claimed.

  39. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

    1 star
What’s the point of basil in lemonade? Doesn’t sound right! I’ll stick with mint.

  40. 1 star
Made this recipe but forgot the sugar! It was horrible 😂

    4 stars
This recipe is so easy! Used frozen strawberries and it still turned out great!

    5 stars
Yummy! Made it for my BBQ, everyone loved it! Will definitely make again!

    1. 2 stars
I dunno, seems a bit weird mixing strawberries with basil. Not sure I’d like it.

    2. User avatar ArabianNights says:

      5 stars
Sounds delicious! Perfect for summer BBQs. What a refreshing drink!

  43. User avatar efrain.bogisich2005 says:

    2 stars
Does the basil really make a difference? I wasn’t sure and maybe used too much.

  44. User avatar daniela.fisher2017 says:

    3 stars
It’s okay, but I think it needed more sugar. I prefer my drinks sweeter. Maybe I just had a bad batch.

    1. User avatar Margy Botsford Jr. says:

      4 stars
I totally get it! I love sweet drinks too! Maybe try adding more sugar next time? It sounds yummy regardless!

  45. 5 stars
Tried it today—so good. I used a little less sugar and it still tasted great. Straining made it feel fancy, not gritty.

  46. User avatar stanley.nitzsche10 says:

    4 stars
Tastes fresh and yummy! Just remember to strain it well or it gets all gritty.

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree! Straining is key, otherwise it gets kinda messy. But this drink is so refreshing!

  47. 5 stars
This is such a refreshing flavor combo—strawberry + basil is weirdly perfect. I used a little less sugar and it still tasted bright. Will make again for summer parties!

    1. User avatar andrew.schmeler41 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! Strawberry + basil sounds odd but it totally works—so fresh and summery. I’m glad you said it still tasted bright with less sugar; I’ll try that next time for sure.

  48. User avatar jackson.beier1 says:

    3 stars
Not sure about the basil. I love basil on food but in a drink it felt kinda weird at first, then I got used to it. Flavor is subtle though.

    1. User avatar osvaldo.nolan says:

      5 stars
Totally get that—basil in a drink can be a little surprising at first. I think it works best when you don’t overpower it with too many leaves, so “loosely packed” is key. Once it chills, the flavor usually blends way smoother.

  49. User avatar shawanna.bins1999 says:

    1 star
Why use basil? Just stick with the plain strawberry lemonade… way better!

  50. User avatar bill.schimmel2001 says:

    1 star
Ugh, lemon juice is bad for my stomach. Can I just use lemonade powder instead?!

  51. User avatar myrtis.langosh38 says:

    2 stars
like, too much work for me. Just grab a soda. who needs basil anyway? lol. 2 stars.

    1. User avatar stephaine.schimmel says:

      4 stars
I get that! Some recipes are just too fussy. But trust me, this lemonade is worth it! 😋

    2. User avatar Storm Atronach says:

      3 stars
Basil adds a unique flavor! But if soda’s your thing, you do you. 🌟

  52. User avatar kyle.kunze1977 says:

    1 star
Huh, sounds weird. But I’ll try it I guess.

  53. 4 stars
Y’all, don’t skip the straining step. It makes a huge difference. I tried blending without it once and it was a whole mess!

    1. User avatar felisha.considine43 says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! Skipping the straining part was a disaster for me too! 😂

  54. 4 stars
The straining step is annoying, not gonna lie. But the end result is smoother and honestly worth it.

  55. 5 stars
Absolutely delicious! The strawberry and basil combo is a game changer.

    1. User avatar jolyn.harber1998 says:

      2 stars
Honestly, doesn’t sound that great. Strawberries and basil? Just stick to normal lemonade.

    2. 5 stars
I can’t even imagine that taste! Strawberry and basil? Sounds wild but maybe amazing! I’m gonna try it!

  56. User avatar norris.howe13 says:

    3 stars
This seem like a weird combo, but I think I like it? Not bad, not great. Just okay.

    1. 4 stars
I thought the same thing at first! But it’s actually super refreshing once you try it. Give it another shot!

  57. User avatar Emily Saunders says:

    2 stars
Not a fan of basil in my drinks. I don’t get it. Why mix herbs with lemonade?🤷‍♂️

  58. 4 stars
I didn’t strain it (because I was lazy) and it was still delicious, just thicker. Might be more of a smoothie situation lol.

    1. User avatar abel.nienow1965 says:

      5 stars
Honestly I like that—sounds more like a strawberry basil drink smoothie/lemonade hybrid. I’m impressed it still tasted great even without straining!

  59. User avatar Orange Dartwing says:

    5 stars
    Lemonade 🍋, yummy!

    1. User avatar tim.bernhard says:

      5 stars
That sounds refreshing! I love the strawberry and basil combo! 🍓🌿

    2. User avatar flavia.toy51 says:

      2 stars
Lemonade is cool and all, but where’s the strawberry? 🤔

  60. User avatar gwendolyn.bashirian31 says:

    5 stars
This is such a refreshing combo—strawberry + basil is way better than I expected. The lemon juice really makes it pop.
