Pesto Potatoes au Gratin

December 17, 2024

Pesto Potatoes au Gratin is a flavorful twist on the classic French gratin, bringing together creamy layers of thinly sliced potatoes with the bold, aromatic taste of fresh pesto. This dish offers a unique fusion of rustic comfort and French elegance, making it a standout option for dinner parties, holidays, or cozy weeknight meals.

Traditionally, potatoes au gratin is a beloved French dish featuring potatoes baked in cream, often with a golden, cheesy crust. In this variation, the rich basil pesto adds depth and a vibrant green hue, transforming the dish into something extraordinary. Each layer of potato is brushed or tossed with pesto, then bathed in a creamy sauce and topped with cheese, resulting in a bubbling, golden casserole that smells as good as it tastes.

The dish is easy to prepare yet impressive in both flavor and presentation. You can use homemade or high-quality store-bought pesto—just make sure it’s packed with fresh basil, garlic, pine nuts, and Parmesan for the most authentic flavor. The cream balances the pesto’s intensity, while the melted cheese on top forms a satisfying, savory crust.

Pesto Potatoes au Gratin pairs wonderfully with grilled meats, roasted vegetables, or a crisp salad, but it’s also hearty enough to shine as a main course. It’s a fantastic way to elevate simple ingredients like potatoes and cream with the bold, herbal punch of pesto.

This dish is a celebration of French technique and Mediterranean flavor—a culinary crossover that feels both familiar and fresh. Whether served at a formal dinner or a casual gathering, Pesto Potatoes au Gratin brings comfort, sophistication, and a little French flair to the table. It’s the kind of recipe that quickly becomes a favorite, loved for its rich texture, vibrant taste, and beautiful presentation.

I dunno, I think potatoes au gratin should just be cheese, not this pesto stuff. Didn’t enjoy it very much.

Super easy recipe! Just make sure to slice the potatoes thin, and it turns out great. My kids loved it!

  3. User avatar Dan Streetmentioner says:

This was delicious! The pesto really gave it a unique flavor. Will definitely make again!

  4. 4 stars
Made it with store-bought pesto and it was still great. I’d recommend slicing the potatoes as thin as possible—otherwise the bake time might need a few extra minutes.

  5. User avatar irwin.corkery1991 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but 375°F felt a bit low for my oven. I ended up baking closer to 1 hour total so the potatoes were fully soft. Flavor is solid though.

  6. User avatar Frostbite Spider says:

    4 stars
Wow, who knew potatoes could taste this good? My family loved it. Thanks for sharing!

    1. 5 stars
I’m so glad to hear that! These potatoes are a family favorite for sure! 😊

  7. 1 star
This recipe is too complicated for me. Can’t I just put everything in one pot?

    1. User avatar Liet-Kynes says:

      4 stars
You can simplify it, but it won’t have the same flavor! Try following the steps, they’re not that hard!

  8. User avatar The Allitnils says:

    5 stars
This is comfort food for real. I served it with chicken and everyone asked for the recipe. Easy enough for a weeknight too.

  9. User avatar wellRespected says:

    2 stars
Too creamy for my taste. I think I’d cut the cream in half next time or use more potatoes to balance it out.

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree—mine was super rich too. Cutting the cream with a bit more potato (or even a splash of milk/broth) sounds like the perfect fix!

    2. 4 stars
Huh I actually like it creamy 😅 but I’ve never tried halving the cream. How much potatoes would you add, like an extra half cup? (I’m lazy lol.)

  10. User avatar Leto Atreides says:

    5 stars
I used homemade pesto and it tasted restaurant-level. Next time I might add a pinch of garlic powder, but overall very solid.

  11. User avatar Max Quordlepleen says:

    3 stars
45 min covered + 15 min uncovered felt a bit short for my super-thin slices, but it worked. I’d start checking around 50 min total next time.

    1. User avatar myron.nader76 says:

      5 stars
Good call on checking earlier—45+15 can definitely be a little optimistic for super-thin slices. I’ve found 50–55 min works better depending on how thin they are. Thanks for sharing!

  12. User avatar lakeisha.kling says:

    5 stars
These turned out SO creamy and the pesto flavor really comes through. I used homemade pesto and definitely won’t make it any other way now. Perfect golden top!

  13. User avatar Frodo Baggins says:

    5 stars
    Yum! 💚

    1. 3 stars
Looks good, but it seems pretty unhealthy with all that cream. 🤔

    2. User avatar lulu.carter4 says:

      5 stars
This looks amazing! Can’t wait to try it 😊

  14. User avatar luther.block34 says:

    4 stars
Used store-bought pesto and regular cream—still tasty, but I felt it needed more salt/pepper than “to taste” implied. Otherwise great comfort food.

  15. User avatar Super Saiyan Gohan says:

    5 stars
This recipe is amazing! The pesto gives a great twist to the traditional gratin. My family loved it! Highly recommend!

    1. 5 stars
I agree, this is a fantastic twist! The pesto really takes it to another level. So glad your family enjoyed it too!

    2. User avatar liberal.hero says:

      3 stars
Sounds good, but isn’t gratin supposed to be just cheese? Pesto seems like a weird add-on. 🤔

  16. User avatar vern.batz says:

    2 stars
I don’t know about mixing pesto with potatoes. Sounds odd to me. 🤔

  17. User avatar ezekiel.lowe1991 says:

    4 stars
Only 375?? i thought it would need like 425. lol but it worked. Kinda fancy for a weeknight.

    1. 4 stars
Huh I used 425 like you thought and it kinda browned too fast. Still tasty though, but I think your temp/timing is the better move. Thanks!

    2. User avatar alden.ondricka86 says:

      5 stars
375°F isn’t bad at all—got me doubting too, but it turned out perfect. The pesto + parm combo makes it taste way more “fancy” than a weeknight.

  18. User avatar Alia Atreides says:

    5 stars
My partner said it tastes like “Italian lasagna vibes” without the noodles 😂. We’ll make it again.

  19. User avatar alfonso.heathcote38 says:

    3 stars
Too much cream for my taste. I prefer a lighter version.

    1. User avatar ines.homenick1978 says:

      4 stars
I get what you mean! Maybe try using less cream and add some broth instead? It’ll still be tasty!

  20. 4 stars
I used store-bought pesto (because I’m lazy lol) and it still tasted very fresh. Would definitely make again.

  21. User avatar erik.stanton53 says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, pesto + cream + potatoes sounds a little weird at first… but it’s honestly delicious. The Parmesan on top gives it that salty crunch vibe.

    1. User avatar mathWizard says:

      5 stars
Totally get what you mean—pesto with cream sounds odd until you taste it. The Parmesan crust is the best part though. 🙌

  22. User avatar liberal.hero says:

    3 stars
I tried it, but it was too salty for me. Maybe less salt next time?

    1. 5 stars
I totally get you! I think the salt can really depend on the pesto too. I’ll try less next time! Thanks for the tip!

  23. 5 stars
Made this tonight—so creamy and herby. The golden top after removing the foil is the best part. I used homemade pesto and it really pops.

  24. 2 stars
I dunno… I feel like adding pesto to potatoes might ruin them. I mean, potatoes are great on their own.

    1. User avatar geoWizard says:

      2 stars
Nah, potatoes are just fine. No need for that fancy stuff, they taste good without it.

    2. User avatar madge.reilly says:

      4 stars
I totally get what you mean, but trust me, the pesto actually adds a nice touch! You might be surprised by how good the combo is.

  25. User avatar basementDweller says:

    5 stars
Made these last night—super comforting. The pesto + cream combo is genius and the top actually got that nice golden crust. I salted a bit more and it tasted restaurant-level.

    1. User avatar karl.bashirian says:

      5 stars
This sounds so good! I’m always skeptical about pesto + cream, but if you got that golden crust then I’m sold 😄

  26. User avatar phung.graham1970 says:

    2 stars
not for my taste, might give it a try without the pesto!

  27. User avatar felix.crona1953 says:

    3 stars
This looks cool, but are potatoes even healthy? I thought they were bad for you.

  28. User avatar Danial Johnson says:

    5 stars
Tried this with homemade pesto and it smelled amazing while baking. The top got perfectly golden and the potatoes were tender. I added a little extra pepper—no regrets.

  29. User avatar rosalina.murray1992 says:

    3 stars
This came out a little watery for me. I think my potatoes were too thick and I didn’t mix the cream/pesto enough. Flavor was still nice.

  30. User avatar bok.sawayn says:

    4 stars
I don’t get why it needs both pesto and Parmesan—seems like it would be overpowering. Still, I made it for a potluck and people ate it fast, so maybe I’m wrong 😅

  31. User avatar vennie.douglas41 says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but 375°F feels low? Mine took longer than the instructions. I think it needs closer to 400°F.

    1. User avatar September D'Amore says:

      4 stars
375°F is fine, but foil matters a lot. If someone’s oven runs cool or the slices were thick, yeah it’ll take longer. Mine was tender by the 45+15 with thin slices.

    2. 4 stars
I get what you mean—375°F can be a little slow for gratin. I usually bake closer to 400°F too, but I’ll keep an eye on doneness since pesto + cream can brown quickly.

  32. User avatar San Shenlong says:

    2 stars
Looks great but sounds like a heart attack on a plate! 😱

  33. User avatar Denethor says:

    3 stars
Mine took longer than 45 minutes + 15. The potatoes were still a little firm, so I ended up baking another 10-15 min uncovered.

  34. User avatar Miles Teg says:

    4 stars
I accidentally poured the Parmesan too early and it clumped a bit—still ended up cheesy, so I’m not mad.

  35. User avatar Brynjolf says:

    5 stars
The smell while baking was unreal. Like, my neighbors probably got jealous.

  36. User avatar jacques.kuhn38 says:

    5 stars
This is so good! My kids loved it. Will definitely make again!

  37. 5 stars
Wow, this looks amazing! I love pesto and potatoes, can’t wait to try it!

  38. User avatar hui.okeefe says:

    2 stars
It was okay… kinda greasy for me. Also the potatoes weren’t super tender after 45+15 even with thin slices, so I had to stick it in longer. Wouldn’t be my first pick again.

    1. User avatar kristofer.kuhlman86 says:

      3 stars
Ugh, sorry it didn’t hit for you. The grease could be from the pesto being oily—next time I’d use less pesto or drain excess fat if it looks separated. Also, thin slices still sometimes need longer depending on potato type.

    2. User avatar deneen.kilback65 says:

      4 stars
Hmm I made this once and my potatoes were never tender at 45+15 either, so I’m not surprised. Try soaking the slices in cold water 20 min, and bake uncovered longer if needed—just cover loosely with foil if the top browns too fast.

  39. User avatar man.thiel1962 says:

    5 stars
I love potatoes and pesto, so I’m in! I’m doing this recipe, like, NOW!

    1. User avatar Questular Rontok says:

      2 stars
I dunno, man. Pesto on potatoes? Sounds a bit weird. I’d stick with cheese. 🤔

    2. 5 stars
Yum! Can’t wait to see how mine turns out! 😋

  40. User avatar nicky.gislason says:

    2 stars
I think its too much cream. Mine came out soggy 😩. Gonna try less next time.

  41. User avatar wayne.rutherford6 says:

    4 stars
Super easy and fancy for almost no effort. I love that it’s layered, makes it look like you tried.

    1. User avatar lise.kerluke38 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! The layering makes it look way fancier than it really is. I’m always trying to impress with minimal effort 😄

    2. 4 stars
Layered potatoes are cool, but 45+15 mins at 375°F for thin slices sounds a little long to me. Mine usually get done faster—maybe because I slice thicker? Either way, pesto + parm sounds dangerously good.

  42. 3 stars
I followed it exactly and it was… fine? The pesto flavor was nice, but it tasted slightly greasy to me. Maybe my pesto was saltier than expected. Would make again with a lighter cream.

  43. User avatar junior.schmitt says:

    2 stars
Simple recipe, but it’s missing a clear note on how thin is “thinly sliced.” I went too thick and it wasn’t tender by the end.

    1. User avatar celinda.huel0 says:

      5 stars
Yeah, “thinly sliced” is vague—I’d aim for about 1–2 mm (like deli-style). Anything thicker and the bake time in step 7–8 won’t fully soften them. Next time you could also slice thinner or swap in mandoline slices.

  44. User avatar junior.mills says:

    4 stars
Made this last night and it was a hit! Even my picky husband liked it!

  45. User avatar andree.johns9 says:

    3 stars
I think the cream measurement is off? Mine came out a bit dry until I added extra splash of cream. Also, “to taste” salt is tricky—seasoning really matters here.

  46. User avatar booker.grimes1994 says:

    5 stars
I used store-bought pesto and it was salty enough that I didn’t add much extra salt. Came out great. My family asked for seconds, so yeah.

  47. User avatar alayna.fritsch38 says:

    2 stars
Could be better. My top browned too fast and the bottom felt underdone. Maybe my oven runs hot? Foil timing needs work if your dish is shallow.

    1. 4 stars
Yeah, your oven might be running hot. I’ve had the top brown way before the middle gets tender with gratins if I don’t keep an eye on it. Next time maybe bake a bit longer at 350°F or check for doneness around the 45-minute mark before pulling the foil.

    2. User avatar Lumberjack says:

      4 stars
I think the foil is the whole issue. If the pan is shallow, the top cooks first and the bottom stays meh. Try a deeper dish or cover sooner/leave foil on a little longer. Also are you slicing the potatoes super thin? Mine were like 1/8 inch and it worked.

  48. User avatar Farrah Harvey I says:

    5 stars
Super delicious! I used homemade pesto and it turned out amazing!

  49. User avatar Clyde Moen says:

    4 stars
Simple and delicious! I added some garlic to the mix, and it was a hit!

  50. User avatar ulrike.greenfelder43 says:

    2 stars
Looks good but I hate making layers lol. Also I dont have foil, so I just left it uncovered and… eh. Won’t repeat.

    1. User avatar russell.gleichner54 says:

      4 stars
Totally fair—layering is the worst part. Honestly you can just dump it all in there and stir a bit; it still bakes up cheesy. No foil probably just means it’ll brown faster, so keep an eye on the top around the last 10–15 minutes.

  51. User avatar rosamond.heller9 says:

    4 stars
I’m not usually a pesto person in casseroles, but this worked. Next time I’ll add a little garlic and maybe some crushed red pepper for extra kick.

  52. User avatar ira.stiedemann75 says:

    2 stars
Not sure about the ratio—1 cup pesto felt like a lot. It was tasty, but almost too herby for my taste. Next time I’ll do less pesto and more parmesan.

    1. User avatar Jan U. Wharry says:

      4 stars
I get you—1 cup pesto can be pretty bold. I usually start with 1/3 to 1/2 cup and add more only if I’m feeling extra. More parmesan definitely helps mellow it.

    2. User avatar ezequiel.cartwright1991 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree on the herby punch. Mine tasted like straight-up basil sauce the first time 😅. Next batch I’m doing less pesto + maybe a splash more cream.

  53. 4 stars
Really easy to make. Potatoes and pesto is a weird combo but works!

  54. User avatar Flame Atronach says:

    4 stars
Five stars for the idea, but I don’t trust baking potatoes that thin in only an hour. My oven runs hot/cold, so maybe that’s on me.

  55. User avatar lyman.kemmer34 says:

    4 stars
Pretty solid comfort food. I added a bit more black pepper and it helped a lot. The top came out nicely golden.

  56. 3 stars
3/5. The potatoes weren’t tender after 45 min + 15 min, and I had really thin slices. Next time I’ll slice thinner or parboil first.

    1. User avatar rory.schroeder says:

      5 stars
Thanks for the heads-up! I’m with you—mine were also a bit firm around that time, especially with thicker slices. Parboiling for a few minutes next round sounds like a great fix.

    2. User avatar lucio.rippin says:

      3 stars
45+15 never gets potatoes tender for me unless they’re really thin. I’d just boil them first, but your parboil idea is solid too. Also 3/5 seems fair… mine turned out kinda dry even with pesto.

  57. User avatar andre.rodriguez2005 says:

    3 stars
I wasn’t sure about the pesto with potatoes, but it actually turned out pretty good. Just a bit oily for my taste.

  58. User avatar agnes.shields47 says:

    2 stars
Doesn’t some of z pesto have nuts? What if someone has allergies?!

  59. User avatar milford.spencer93 says:

    5 stars
Made this tonight—super comforting. The pesto really shines and the top turned perfectly golden. I added a little extra pepper and it was great.

    1. User avatar sydney.hilpert says:

      5 stars
Yum—good to hear the pesto really shines! 😍 Golden top is the best part. I’m glad extra pepper worked for you!

  60. User avatar Draugr Overlord says:

    4 stars
So so good! I added garlic too. Will make again for sure. Super easy!

  61. 2 stars
Uhh I forgot the foil once and the top browned fast. Flavor was good tho, just a bit drier. Still edible.

  62. User avatar Gail Andrews says:

    5 stars
Wow. The parmesan browns so well on top—like a cheesy blanket. Served with chicken and it was restaurant-level.

  63. 3 stars
Way too salty for my taste. I think store-bought pesto + Parmesan both have plenty of salt already, so I’d go lighter on the ‘to taste’ seasoning step.

    1. User avatar patrick.dietrich says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—between the pesto and Parmesan there’s usually already plenty of salt. Next time I’m going to skip the “to taste” salt step or at least go super light and only add pepper.

  64. User avatar Vladimir Harkonnen says:

    3 stars
I tried it with half-and-half instead of cream. Not bad, but it didn’t get that rich, almost custardy texture. Still ate it all though.

    1. 4 stars
Thanks for the tip! Half-and-half definitely makes sense—less fat than cream, so you’d lose that rich, custardy feel. Glad it still tasted good enough to finish it though 😄

  65. User avatar Arwen Evenstar says:

    3 stars
Followed the recipe but my potatoes weren’t tender after 60 minutes… next time I’ll slice thinner. Flavor was still awesome though.

  66. 5 stars
This sounds fancy but easy. My kids ate it without complaining lol. I used store-bought pesto and it was still great. Will make again for sure!

    1. User avatar ola.kilback23 says:

      5 stars
Love hearing that—”kids ate it” is the best review 😄 Store-bought pesto totally counts too. I’m making this next week for sure!

  67. User avatar Draugr Thrall says:

    5 stars
Made it for dinner and everyone asked for the recipe. The golden top is honestly the best part. Will definitely repeat.

  68. 4 stars
I’m not usually a pesto person, but this au gratin situation won me over. Cream + Parmesan is a win combo.

    1. User avatar rory.skiles2011 says:

      4 stars
Pesto in an au gratin is kinda weird but… I gotta admit 1/2 cup pesto and a whole cup Parmesan sounds like it’ll slap. I’d probably add garlic too. Did you mean bake at 350 though? 375 feels hot for potatoes.

    2. User avatar claud.beier2 says:

      5 stars
Totally get you—pesto can be hit or miss, but the cream + Parmesan combo makes it feel way more comforting. I’m stealing this layering idea.

  69. User avatar gidget.purdy54 says:

    1 star
No offense, but this sounds like a weird combination. I wouldn’t put pesto on potatoes.

    1. User avatar karon.kris64 says:

      5 stars
I actually think it sounds delicious! Pesto is great with everything.

    2. User avatar monroe.hill says:

      2 stars
Weird combo for sure. Potatoes and pesto? Hmm… not sold on it.

  70. User avatar natacha.gutkowski2018 says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly but my potatoes weren’t as tender after the 60 minutes total. I ended up baking 10 more minutes. Not bad though—just watch the slice thickness.

    1. User avatar drew.boyer says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—slice thickness makes a huge difference. I usually aim for super thin slices and I check tenderness a few minutes early just in case. Glad it still turned out good!

    2. 4 stars
Wait 60 mins? Mine were hard too, but I blamed my oven like an idiot 😅. Next time I’ll slice thinner or maybe crank it to 400. Still, the flavor with pesto/Parmesan is worth it.

  71. User avatar Hasimir Fenring says:

    2 stars
Idk why but my pesto tasted bitter after baking. Maybe I used the wrong pesto jar. Will try again with a milder pesto.

  72. 5 stars
These turned out super creamy and the pesto flavor is amazing. I used homemade pesto and it felt very “restaurant” on the first bite.

Yes!! I made these last week and the pesto really shines—same “restaurant” vibe on the first bite. I used a little extra Parmesan too and it turned out golden and creamy.

Mine were kinda bland 😕 I followed it but maybe my potatoes were too thick? Also I used store pesto and it tasted more oily than herby. Next time I’ll salt more and maybe bake longer—375 for 45 min didn’t seem enough for me.

Made these tonight—so creamy and the pesto flavor actually comes through. I used homemade pesto and it was a hit with everyone.

That’s awesome—homemade pesto really makes a difference. I bet the extra herbs helped it taste extra bright!

Pretty good idea, but my potatoes weren’t tender after 60 minutes. I sliced them thicker than called for, so that’s on me. Next time I’ll go thinner or bake longer.

Pasta is better with pesto, not sure about potatoes. But whatever, I will try it.

I totally get what you mean! Pesto is great, but I’m curious about how it mixes with potatoes. Let us know how it turns out!

Yuuummm! Definitely gonna try this tonight! 🤤

Not sure if pesto and potatoes go together. Sounds a bit weird. 🤔

Good concept, but I had to bake about 10 minutes longer—the potatoes weren’t fully tender at 45+15. Still tasted great.

Way too salty for me and I used “to taste” salt like it says. Could be my pesto was salty already, so adjust that.

I tried this recipe for a potluck, and everyone loved it! Thanks for sharing!

Not convinced—potatoes + pesto sounds weird. Also, 375°F for 45 minutes feels short, but maybe my oven runs hot? I’m giving it another try with thinner slices.

  81. 5 stars
Sooo good! I added bacon bits on top for some crunch. Total game changer!

  82. 3 stars
Way too salty for my taste even though I only used ‘to taste’ salt. Maybe my Parmesan was saltier than yours, but I’d go lighter next time.

What even is pesto? Can I use some kinda sauce instead? 🤔

    5 stars and yes yes.

So easy! I used store-bought pesto and it was still really tasty. This is going on my “bring to parties” list.

I made this for dinner but found it a bit too rich with all that cream. Maybe less cream next time.

I see what you mean! I think less cream could work. I also added some garlic for flavor, it was great!

These came out so creamy and the pesto flavor really shines. I added a little extra pepper and it was perfect comfort food.

Creamy sounds great, but I’m wondering if 45 minutes covered is enough for super thin slices… I usually bake longer so they don’t taste a little too starchy. Still, pesto + parm is a solid combo.

    2. 5 stars
Yes! That creamy pesto vibe is exactly what I’m after with these. Glad the extra pepper worked out—comfort food win 😄

  88. 4 stars
I’m skeptical about cream + pesto together, but wow—it tasted balanced, not weird. Next time I might add a little garlic to the mix.

  89. 4 stars
Very good but what about the garlic? Garlic and pesto go together like bread and butter! Next time I’ll add some.

Not gonna lie, 375°F seems too low for gratin? Mine took longer than 60 minutes. Still ended up okay though.
