A Popular Dish in Italy

Panzanella is a popular dish in Tuscany, Italy. It originated as a way to use up stale bread and has now become a staple in Italian cuisine. The combination of crusty bread, ripe tomatoes, and tangy dressing is simply irresistible.

Health Benefits

While Panzanella may not be the healthiest salad out there, it still offers some nutritional value. The tomatoes provide a good source of vitamin C and antioxidants, while the bread gives you energy and fiber. Additionally, the olive oil in the dressing is rich in healthy fats.

I dunno, it was alright but kinda bland. Needs more flavor!

I totally get what you mean! This dish really needs a kick. Maybe try adding some garlic or a pinch of chili flakes next time!

    2. 3 stars
Bland? Nah, I think it’s refreshing! Not every dish has to be super flavorful. Sometimes simple is better!

Not gonna lie, I don’t get why everyone loves panzanella. Bread salad just feels wrong to me, but my friend said it was ‘so good’ and… okay, it’s okay.

This is like a salad for old bread? Strange but I will try it. Panzanella, sounds fancy.

I made this with stale bread and it turned out great. Who knew old bread could be so good?

  6. User avatar Yooden Vranx says:

Isn’t this just soggy bread? I don’t get the hype.

  7. User avatar Falmer Spellsword says:

Not enough flavor! I think I should’ve added garlic or something else.

  8. User avatar Mrs. Marvin Hills says:

    4 stars
Yum! The fresh basil made it really flavorful. Will make again!

What is this even? Bread in a salad? Seems weird to me.

Panzanella is actually a classic Italian dish! The bread soaks up all the flavors. Once you try it, you might love it!

So easy to make! I used stale bread that I had lying around. Great way to not waste food!

    1. User avatar Draugr Overlord says:

10/10 with stale bread? Wow, are you sure? I always thought it needed fresh bread… 🤔

    2. User avatar geoWizard says:

That’s awesome! Panzanella is really forgiving, even with stale bread. Glad your kids liked it!

  15. User avatar gaylene.oconnell16 says:

    5 stars
I made this exactly as written and it turned out awesome—fresh, tangy, and the bread soaked up the dressing perfectly after 15 minutes. The basil smell is unreal.

  16. User avatar soila.bahringer16 says:

    4 stars
Solid idea, but my bread stayed a bit chewy at 10 minutes. Next time I’ll let it sit closer to 30 and maybe cube smaller. Still tasty though!

  17. User avatar lilian.grimes28 says:

    4 stars
It’s really simple to make! I threw in some bell peppers too. Tasted amazing.

    1. 5 stars
Sounds delicious! I love when recipes are versatile. I might try adding olives next time!

  18. 4 stars
I made this without the onions ’cause I’m allergic, and it was still yummy. Thanks for the recipe!

  19. 1 star
I made this with stale bread, and it was horrible. Sorry, but no.

    1. User avatar norberto.willms33 says:

      2 stars
U just gotta use good bread! Stale bread ain’t the same ya know. Also, sounds like u rushed it.

    2. User avatar Demon King Piccolo says:

      4 stars
I don’t think stale bread would work well. Fresh bread is key for this! Maybe try again with fresh ingredients next time?

  20. User avatar granville.marks says:

    4 stars
Super easy and fresh. I added a little garlic and it somehow made it better. Basil + vinegar combo is so good.

  21. User avatar glynis.nienow10 says:

    2 stars
Just a salad? I don’t get what the big deal is. It’s just bread and veggies.

  22. 3 stars
The recipe seems easy… But I didn’t have all the ingredients. Can I use any bread?

    1. User avatar Margurite Goldner says:

      4 stars
You can use any bread really, just make sure it’s not too fresh or it won’t soak up the dressing right!

  23. User avatar kurt.murray says:

    3 stars
I tried this but found it a bit soggy. Maybe less dressing next time?

  24. User avatar moses.weber1956 says:

Simple and delicious! I used sourdough bread and it added a nice tang. Will make again!

    1. User avatar Will Power says:

      5 stars
I can’t believe you used sourdough! That’s a great idea! I’m definitely trying that next time.

  25. User avatar russell.hamill18 says:

    2 stars
One star because I forgot the red onion (too lazy) and it still tasted kinda bland. Also my vinegar was expired so maybe that’s on me. 😅

  26. User avatar isaac.pfannerstill1999 says:

    5 stars
This is my go-to summer salad! The freshness of the tomatoes and basil pairs so well! Love it!

    1. User avatar dolores.dicki99 says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! It’s the perfect dish for hot days. I usually add some mozzarella for extra creaminess. Yum!

    2. 3 stars
Sounds good, but I don’t like raw onions. Can I leave them out?

  27. User avatar Feral Falmer says:

    3 stars
Not bad but the cucumber made it watery. Also I accidentally used white vinegar instead of red wine and it was harsher. Still ate it though 😅

  28. User avatar kareem.mertz1985 says:

    5 stars
Panzanella is like a salad, but with bread! Who knew?! So good. 10/10!

    1. User avatar Barliman Butterbur says:

      3 stars
But isn’t it kinda soggy with that old bread? I prefer my salads crispy!

    2. User avatar mathWizard says:

      5 stars
I know, right? Bread in a salad is the best idea ever! 😍

  29. User avatar lakia.erdman38 says:

    2 stars
I don’t think bread belongs in a salad. That’s just weird.

  30. User avatar lillia.berge says:

    1 star
Panzanella is too soggy for my taste! I’m sticking to regular salad. 😩

  31. User avatar Dominic Vernius says:

    5 stars
This was super yummy! I loved the fresh basil flavor. Definitely making it again! 🥗

  32. 3 stars
Mine turned out a little soggy, not gonna lie. I think my bread wasn’t quite day-old and I let it sit longer than 10 minutes.

    1. User avatar felicita.koelpin58 says:

      4 stars
Oof, I feel that. Panzanella is super sensitive—if the bread isn’t truly day-old (or dry enough), it turns into mush fast. I usually use bread that’s a bit stale and I don’t let it go much past 10–15 minutes, max.

    2. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

      3 stars
Maybe you just needed a bit more crunch fix? Like, chill it and serve sooner. Also I don’t know if 10 min is enough for everyone—mine takes like 20 lol. I think your vinegar/oil ratio could be off too?

  33. User avatar Dominic Vernius says:

    5 stars
I absolutely love this recipe! The mix of flavors is just perfect. I added some feta cheese and it was divine!

  34. 1 star
I don’t get how people eat bread in a salad… bread ruins everything!!!

  35. User avatar cletus.daugherty10 says:

    4 stars
Gotta be honest, I used balsamic vinegar instead and it was kinda sweet. Did I mess it up?

  36. User avatar demetrius.reynolds2014 says:

    3 stars
The ratios feel a bit off to me—my bread drank up the dressing fast, so it ended up dry. I’d add more olive oil next time.

  37. User avatar anna.sporer1989 says:

    3 stars
I’m confused about the bread amount—4-5 cups is huge. Mine was way too dry at first, then I added extra oil/vinegar and fixed it.

  38. User avatar henrietta.hilpert1 says:

    4 stars
I gotta admit, I never tried a salad like this. It turned out to be awesome! Definitely making again.

  39. 4 stars
Not gonna lie, I’m skeptical. Panzanella always sounds like “salad but with soggy bread.” I tried it anyway and… it was actually pretty good, just don’t over-soak.

    1. User avatar joesph.predovic97 says:

      3 stars
Hmm… I feel like panzanella is just bread salad with extra steps. I tried and it still got soggy for me, maybe my tomatoes were too juicy? Next time I’ll use less vinegar or more salt to dry it out.

    2. User avatar sherman.kilback1969 says:

      5 stars
Totally get that vibe 😅 I was skeptical too, but the 10 minutes part is key. If you let it sit too long it turns into sad mush.

  40. User avatar Earl Lee Riser says:

    3 stars
Hmmm, where’s the protein? I’d never make a salad without chicken or something

    1. User avatar agueda.mertz says:

      2 stars
Salad without meat? Seriously? That’s just a bowl of stuff! Who even eats that?

    2. User avatar wiley.larkin says:

      4 stars
I get what you’re saying, but this recipe is all about the veggies! You can always add grilled chicken if you want that protein boost!

  41. 2 stars
Meh, I don’t get why people rave about this. Just bread and veggies, not special.

  42. User avatar fredric.hettinger99 says:

    5 stars
Tried this today and it actually tastes super fresh—those soaked bread cubes are the magic. Used a bit more basil and it was perfect.

    1. User avatar Reg Nullify says:

      5 stars
Yes!! The soaked bread cubes are EVERYTHING. I always let mine sit a little longer than 10 min too—so good with extra basil. 🌿

    2. User avatar deshawn.roberts16 says:

      4 stars
I tried panzanella before and it was kinda soggy… but I guess you really need day-old bread. Also your basil swap makes sense. Next time I’ll do more basil and less onion (my family finds onion “too loud”).

  43. User avatar Shelton Moen says:

    5 stars
    Salad. Nice. Bread. Yummy.

  44. User avatar bryan.hackett44 says:

    2 stars
I don’t get why everyone likes this. The bread got too soggy for my taste. 🤷‍♂️

  45. User avatar joe_banana says:

    5 stars
Yum! My family loved it! 10/10 will make again!

  46. User avatar Sand-Dial says:

    3 stars
Okay but why so much bread? I used 4 cups and it was mostly bread with a few tomato bites. Flavor was good, just felt heavy—could’ve used more tomatoes or cucumber.

  47. 4 stars
I used stale bread and it still turned out fine. Never thought day-old could taste so good!

  48. 2 stars
I don’t like tomatoes, can I put in apples instead? 😂

  49. 5 stars
This was an amazing salad! So fresh and tasty, loved it!

  50. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

    5 stars
This was quite tasty! Perfect for a hot day. I added some olives for extra flavor.

  51. User avatar ulrike.shields says:

    4 stars
Solid basic panzanella. I added a little garlic because I can’t help myself, and it came out great. The 10 minutes was enough for me.

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree—this one’s simple but hits. I also usually end up adding garlic (who can resist?). Glad the 10 minutes worked for you!

    2. 3 stars
10 minutes is enough?? I always let mine sit like an hour so the bread gets softer… but maybe I just like it mushy. Either way looks solid.

  52. User avatar meta.haag says:

    4 stars
The dressing is simple but flavorful. Cherry tomatoes make it sweet, and the red wine vinegar gives a nice kick. Would make again.

  53. User avatar cristina.pollich2024 says:

    5 stars
quick and easy, 10/10 would make again!

  54. User avatar Reid Weber III says:

    3 stars
I tried this and felt like it needed something else… maybe some feta? Just my opinion.

  55. User avatar lala.brown48 says:

    4 stars
Super easy to make! Used leftover baguette from last week. Yum!

  56. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

    2 stars
My mom makes panzanella but she uses different veggies. Is this even right?

  57. 3 stars
This looks easy, but I’ve never had panzanella before. Is it supposed to be soggy?

  58. User avatar Chaurus Hunter says:

    5 stars
Panzanella is a classic! Best in summer, especially with fresh veggies.

    1. User avatar jordon.bauch37 says:

      2 stars
I dunno, man. Bread in a salad? Sounds kinda weird to me. I prefer my bread toasted.

    2. 5 stars
Absolutely! Nothing beats fresh ingredients in summer. This salad is so refreshing!

  59. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

    1 star
What is panzanella? Sounds fancy… Should I be a chef now? 🤔😂

  60. User avatar Vladimir Harkonnen says:

    5 stars
My kids loved it! Even my picky eater tried the tomatoes.

  61. User avatar calandra.rau46 says:

    2 stars
The dressing was overpowering! I may have added too much vinegar. Yikes.

  62. User avatar argentina.kuphal10 says:

    4 stars
I swapped cucumbers for bell peppers and it turned out great. Just experiment!

  63. User avatar heath.ferry56 says:

    4 stars
Tried it with regular tomatoes because that’s what I had and it still tasted good. The vinegar dressing is tangy in a great way.

  64. 2 stars
I don’t get why you use old bread? Fresh is better, right? 🤷‍♂️ Still tasted alright tho.

  65. 5 stars
This salad is a game-changer! So fresh and flavorful.

  66. User avatar julio.stanton64 says:

    3 stars
Easy to make, but I think it’s missing something… Maybe some cheese? 🤔

  67. 4 stars
1/2 cup oil seems like a lot? I poured a little less and it was fine. Would make again, especially in summer.

  68. 5 stars
Love this—using day-old bread makes it feel so hearty. The 10 minutes soak time is key. Mine got a little salty, but overall 10/10.

  69. 5 stars
I was skeptical about soaking bread in salad, but wow. The crunch disappears and it turns kind of like savory crouton mush (in a good way).

  70. User avatar Spriggan Matron says:

    3 stars
Quick question—do I soak the bread in water first? I tossed day-old bread directly and it was chewy. Maybe I did it wrong, but still tasty.
