Jalapeno Poppers

April 25, 2024

Jalapeño poppers are the ultimate crowd-pleasing snack – spicy, creamy, and perfectly crisp. They bring the heat, but with just enough richness to balance things out, making them an irresistible appetizer for game days, parties, or anytime you’re craving something bold and flavorful.

At the heart of every jalapeño popper is, of course, the jalapeño. These peppers have a medium level of heat that’s perfect for those who enjoy a bit of spice without going overboard. Slicing them lengthwise and removing the seeds helps control the spice level, while leaving a little rib gives each bite that signature kick.

The classic filling is a creamy mixture of cheese, often a blend of cream cheese and shredded cheddar. This combo melts beautifully and creates a rich, tangy contrast to the pepper’s spice. You can also customize the filling with extras like chopped bacon, scallions, garlic, or herbs to add more flavor and texture.

Once stuffed, jalapeño poppers can be made in several ways. Some people prefer wrapping them in bacon for a smoky, salty finish that crisps up beautifully in the oven. Others go for the breaded and fried route, coating each popper in breadcrumbs before frying to golden perfection. Baked versions are a little lighter and just as satisfying, with a gooey center and slightly crisp top.

Jalapeño poppers are incredibly versatile. Serve them as an appetizer with a side of ranch or sour cream, or make them the centerpiece of a snack platter. They also pair well with wings, nachos, or sliders for a full-on party spread.

Whether you’re hosting a get-together or simply making a fun snack for yourself, jalapeño poppers are always a good idea. They deliver just the right mix of creamy, crunchy, and spicy in every bite, the kind of snack that disappears quickly and keeps people coming back for more.

Ingredients

  • 12 jalapeno peppers fresh
  • 8 ounces cream cheese softened
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup bacon cooked and crumbled
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

Simple steps, but not very spicy. Thought they’d be hotter. 😐

I followed the steps exactly, but my jalapenos seemed to leak and the filling almost fell out. Any tips to keep them sealed? Still tasty, just messy.

Maybe your jalapenos were still a bit wet or too fresh/squishy. I’ve found if you roast them (cut-side up) for like 5 min first, they firm up and the cheese leakage drops. And if you let the filled jalapenos chill in the fridge 20-30 min before breading, it seals better for me.

Oof, sorry they came out messy. A couple things help the filling “stay put”: after you scoop out the seeds/membranes, pat the jalapeno halves really dry, and when you fill them don’t overstuff—leave a little rim so the cheese doesn’t push out. Also make sure you really press the breadcrumbs/flour coating down so it grips the pepper skin.

Not spicy enough for me, I added more jalapenos. Still good tho.

These are amazing! I added some extra cheese and they turned out perfect! 🥳

Honestly, I think adding too much cheese might make them kinda soggy? But I’ll take your word for it.

So glad you loved them! Extra cheese is always a win! 😍

Loved it! So easy to make and they taste awesome! I added a little extra garlic powder though.

I found this recipe too spicy for my kids. Maybe less jalapenos next time? 🤔

I find jalapenos too spicy for my taste. Can I use bell peppers instead?

I’m skeptical about the 2–3 minutes per side + baking. I tried it and the outside was golden, but some poppers leaked cheese like a volcano. Delicious failure though.

Yeah, that leak sounds exactly like the cheese needed more “seal.” I usually cut the peppers a bit thinner and make sure to pat the breadcrumb coating on really firmly before frying. Also try baking a couple minutes longer after they’re already golden.

So good I could eat the whole batch! My kids loved ’em too! Will def make again.

The timing confused me—fried 2-3 min per side then baked 10-12. Mine dried out. Next time I’d bake closer to 6-8 minutes.

Pretty solid recipe—mine were a little greasy though. Next time I’ll drain them on a rack instead of directly on the sheet before the oven step.

  13. 4 stars
So easy but I ran out of breadcrumbs! Had to use crushed crackers instead.

These were dangerously good. The crisp coating + melty cheese is such a perfect combo. I used a little less jalapeño stuffing so they wouldn’t ooze—still amazing.

  15. 2 stars
Why would you deep-fry when you can just bake? So much healthier!

Pretty solid recipe! My only tweak was adding a pinch of cayenne to the filling for extra kick. Still came out crispy after the oven step.

I followed the recipe step by step but they turned out soggy. Not sure what I did wrong.

  19. 4 stars
Followed the steps but mine stayed a bit soft—maybe my oil wasn’t hot enough. Still tasty though, just not as crunchy as I hoped.

That sounds like an oil/crumb adhesion issue. I’d try getting the oil a bit hotter and make sure you’re frying in smaller batches so the temperature doesn’t drop.

Why do people put bacon in everything? It was too greasy for my liking. Disappointed.
