Homemade Peanut Butter is one of those simple kitchen projects that feels surprisingly rewarding. With just a few ingredients and a food processor, you can create a creamy, rich spread that tastes fresher and more intense than anything from the store. Once you try it, you may never want to go back to the jarred version again.
The beauty of homemade peanut butter starts with the peanuts themselves. Roasted peanuts are the foundation, delivering deep, nutty flavor and natural oils that create the perfect texture. You can use unsalted peanuts for full control over seasoning, or lightly salted ones if you prefer a more savory bite. As the peanuts blend, they go through several stages, from crumbs to a thick paste, and finally into a smooth, glossy butter.
One of the biggest advantages of making peanut butter at home is customization. You decide how smooth or chunky it should be, whether you want it lightly sweetened, or completely pure with nothing added. A small pinch of salt enhances the flavor, while a touch of honey or maple syrup adds gentle sweetness without overpowering the peanuts. For extra depth, some people like to add a dash of cinnamon or a hint of vanilla.
Texture is key, and patience is important during blending. At first, the mixture may seem dry or uneven, but with time, the natural oils are released and everything comes together beautifully. Scraping down the sides of the processor helps ensure an even, creamy result. If you prefer a looser consistency, a small spoon of neutral oil can be added, though it is often not necessary.
Homemade Peanut Butter is incredibly versatile. Spread it on warm toast, swirl it into oatmeal, or use it as a base for sauces and dressings. It is also perfect for baking, adding rich flavor to cookies, peanut butter stuffed brownies, and energy bites. Simply spooned straight from the jar, it makes a satisfying and nourishing snack.
Storing homemade peanut butter is easy. Kept in a sealed jar in the refrigerator, it stays fresh for several weeks. Natural separation may occur, but a quick stir brings it right back to life. Simple, wholesome, and endlessly adaptable, Homemade Peanut Butter is a kitchen staple worth making from scratch.

I tried making this, and for some reason, it came out really dry. Maybe I did it wrong? Not sure if I’d try again.
Why refrigerate it? Peanut butter is usually shelf-stable for me, so this is kinda confusing. Taste was fine though.
I get it—peanut butter can be shelf-stable, but this is basically just peanuts + salt + optional oil/honey, so it doesn’t have the stabilizers some store brands do. Oil can also separate faster if it’s warmer. Refrigerating helps keep it from going funky.
Yummy! Just added a bit of cocoa powder for chocolate flavor. So good! 4 stars!
Easy recipe and it tastes amazing! Have to keep it in the fridge tho. Thanks for sharing!
I love homemade peanut butter! Super easy and delish! 😊
Wait, you gotta put it in the fridge? I didn’t know that! I’ve been keeping mine out. Is it safe?
This is the best peanut butter I’ve ever made! Super easy and way tastier than store-bought. Definitely 5 stars!
I love peanut butter but why would you put honey in it?? That’s not peanut butter rant! 1 star.
Made this today—so much better than store-bought. I used a little extra oil and it came out super smooth. Honey was a good touch too.
Yes!! Extra oil usually makes it go silky for me too. Also love that you added honey—makes it taste way more “real.”
Delicious! I added a dash of cinnamon and it’s amazing! 😊
Ok wow. The smell when it’s processing is insane. I’m gonna make this again and try adding cinnamon or something next time.
I thought refrigerating would make it hard like butter, but it firms up a bit and then spreads fine. Good tip.
The “oil optional” part is key. Without oil mine got stiff in the fridge, but with a teaspoon it stayed creamy.
Yes!! I kept forgetting the oil and mine turned grainy/stiff too. A tiny bit really makes it stay spreadable in the fridge.
Interesting—mine was kinda okay without oil but I think I over-processed? Also I used olive oil once and it tasted a little weird lol. Teaspoon of neutral oil seems safest.
Pretty good, but mine turned grainy after a couple minutes. I think I didn’t process long enough—next time I’ll keep going until it looks glossy.
Yeah, grainy is usually just a “not enough blending” thing. Once the oils start releasing it should go glossy and smooth—scrape the bowl a couple times and keep going a bit longer if needed.
Not sure about the oil amount. I used peanut oil and it made the texture a bit looser. Maybe just depends on peanut freshness? But I’d tweak it next time.
Wow, this is so easy! I never thought making peanut butter would be this simple. Turned out great!
Couldn’t get it super smooth—more like chunky spread. I’m blaming my food processor (old one). If you want silky, maybe add more patience or a bit more oil.
Seems alittle too plain for me. Can you add choclate or something? 🤔
Honey is optional but I added it anyway—now it’s kinda like dessert PB. Would recommend if you like sweet spreads.
I love making my own stuff! Homemade peanut butter is way better than store-bought. 10/10 recommend!
Not gonna lie, 1 tablespoon of oil seems like a lot for 2 cups of peanuts. Mine felt greasy after chilling. Flavor was okay, but texture was off.
Interesting—mine never got greasy, but I do go by how the peanut butter looks. If it seems dry after a couple minutes, I drizzle in oil a little at a time instead of all at once.
Honey is optional but I think it’s necessary—otherwise it tastes kinda flat. Also the salt amount depends a lot on how salty your peanuts already are.
Totally agree about the honey—without it the flavor feels a bit one-note. I add just a drizzle and it comes out way more “peanut butter shop” vibes. Also yes on salt being peanut-dependent.
I disagree a little. Mine tastes great without honey if I use really fresh roasted peanuts (and I don’t go heavy on the processor time). But you’re right about salt—if the peanuts are already salted, you gotta hold back.
Mine stayed kinda grainy… I think I didn’t process long enough. Also, I forgot to add the oil until the end lol. Still edible though.
I followed it exactly, but mine took longer to get smooth. After like 5-6 minutes in the processor it finally came together. Still tasty though.
One minute chop + 1-2 min grind? Mine never got smooth, like at all. Maybe my blender is weak. Waste of peanuts tbh.
Yeah, that sounds frustrating. If it never gets smooth, it’s often the peanut/oil breakdown timing and the processor power. Even 4-6 minutes total can be too fast for some blenders—try stopping to scrape more often (every 30-45 sec) and letting it run longer, like 8-10 minutes. Also adding the oil earlier can help a lot.
Just made this and it actually came out super creamy. I used a tiny bit of coconut oil instead of peanut oil and it tastes amazing. Thanks!
Tried this today and it came out way better than store-bought. Took a few minutes longer in my processor, but it turned super creamy. The pinch of salt really makes it pop.
That’s awesome—totally agree about the salt. I always think it “doesn’t seem like enough” but it really does make it taste more peanut-y.
Mine came out pretty decent, but I think I overprocessed? It got kinda oily and I didn’t measure the salt super carefully. Still better than store stuff though—will try again with the exact times.
This is literally just ground peanuts… I guess it’s good but kind of basic? Still, cheaper than buying it, so okay.
Yeah it’s kinda “just peanuts” lol but the grinding process matters. If you get it smooth, it’s still way better.
Honestly this is exactly what peanut butter is—peanuts + time. Basic, but it’s way fresher than store-bought.
Tried this and it’s seriously way better than store-bought. I used a drizzle of honey and a little extra salt—perfect. Took my food processor a bit longer than 1 minute though, but worth it.
Wow, I’m glad it worked for you! Honey + a pinch more salt is exactly the move. My processor usually takes longer too—peanut butter has a mind of its own 😄
Y’all, my dog loved it too. Just peanuts! What a good boy! 🐶
That’s awesome! Dogs really know what’s good. 🐾
Can confirm: if your peanuts aren’t roasted, it won’t taste right. I used raw once and it was… not it.
Too salty for my taste. I used ‘to taste’ but somehow ended up with a saltier batch than intended. Next time I’ll start with half and go from there.
