Homemade Bread Recipe

January 15, 2025

There’s something incredibly satisfying about the process of baking your own bread. The aroma of freshly baked bread filling the house, the warmth of the loaf straight from the oven, and the soft, tender crumb make homemade bread a treat for both the senses and the soul. While baking bread from scratch may sound intimidating, it’s actually simpler than you might think. With just a few basic ingredients, you can make a loaf that rivals any store-bought version.

At the heart of homemade bread is the combination of flour, yeast, water, and salt. The yeast acts as the leavening agent, helping the dough rise and creating the airy, light texture that makes bread so irresistible. As the dough rises, it develops flavor and structure, and the act of kneading helps to build the gluten, which gives the bread its chewy texture.

Once you mix the ingredients together, the dough needs to rise in a warm place. This is when the magic happens. After about an hour, the dough will double in size. After punching it down, it’s ready to be shaped into a loaf. Placing the dough in a loaf pan helps it hold its shape, and as it bakes, the heat transforms it into a golden, fragrant loaf with a crisp, slightly chewy crust.

The beauty of homemade bread is in its simplicity. You don’t need any fancy equipment or ingredients to get started—just a mixing bowl, a spoon, and your hands. The process may take a few hours, but it’s mostly hands-off time where the dough does its work. The result is a warm, comforting loaf that you can enjoy with anything from butter to jam, or as the base for a delicious sandwich.

There’s nothing like the feeling of slicing into a loaf of homemade bread. The warm, soft texture and the taste of the freshly baked crust are unbeatable. Whether you’re baking it for a family dinner or simply because you crave that comforting aroma, homemade bread is always a winner.

I tried this, but my bread came out flat. I think I didn’t let it rise enough? Not sure what went wrong.

I used bread flour instead of all-purpose and it turned out kinda chewy. Not mad at it. Next time I’ll stick to the recipe for sure.

I followed the instructions exactly, but my bread didn’t rise well. I’m not sure if I did something wrong or what.

375°F for 30 minutes is too short for my oven—top browned but inside was a little gummy. I should’ve baked longer. Flavor was decent.

I tried it and it FLOPPED. The yeast didn’t rise, should I have used more?

Can we talk about “sounds hollow”? 😂 I tapped it and it sounded hollow-ish, but I’m not sure if I’m doing that right. Came out good anyway.

I don’t know if I did it right, but my dough didn’t rise. Maybe my yeast was old? Either way, it was a flop for me. 2 stars.

  23. 2 stars
I followed it exactly and it didn’t get “doubled.” Might’ve been my warm place, but I’m also not sure about the yeast packet conversion—mine was different.

  24. User avatar ok.koss95 says:

Easy recipe but my bread didn’t rise much… I maybe forgot the sugar? IDK.

    1. User avatar eleanor.yost23 says:

      4 stars
It sounds like you might’ve missed the sugar, that could definitely affect the rise! Don’t worry, it happens to the best of us. Just try again and pay extra attention to the ingredients this time!

  25. User avatar johnathan.lakin says:

    4 stars
I had leftover yeast and tried this. Didn’t know it would be so simple! Mine was a bit dense but still edible.

  26. 2 stars
Idk why but mine was more like a cake bread… maybe I used self-rising flour by accident. Still tastes okay, but yeah not bread bread.

This was my first time making bread and it lifted my spirits! Gonna add some herbs next time. 5 stars for sure!

Tried this today and it came out way better than I expected. Golden brown, real “bake shop” smell. I only needed a touch more flour during kneading.

  30. User avatar angele.kuphal23 says:

This bread is amazing!!! I couldn’t believe how easy it was to make. It tastes just like store-bought, if not better!

  31. User avatar Zofia Daugherty DDS says:

Why put sugar in bread? Thought bread was just flour and water. I don’t get it.

    1. User avatar deanna.blanda says:

      4 stars
Actually, sugar helps with the fermentation process and can add a little flavor. It’s not just for sweetness! 🙂

    2. User avatar Piter De Vries says:

      2 stars
I mean, why bother with sugar at all? Just flour and water would be fine, right? This seems unnecessary.

  32. User avatar Dwarven Shpere says:

    3 stars
I added herbs to mine. It was alright, but I think it needed more flavor. Maybe next time I’ll add cheese.

  33. 2 stars
I tried this recipe but my dough didn’t rise. I must’ve messed up somewhere. Very frustrating!

This bread turned out amazing! So fluffy and light! Will definitely make again.

    5 stars
Simple and yummy! Just like my mom used to make. Love it! 😍

  44. User avatar Katarina says:

    3 stars
My rise time was longer because my kitchen was cold. After like 2 hours it finally doubled. Not the recipe’s fault—just letting you know it varies.

  45. User avatar Torchbugs says:

    5 stars
This came out way better than I expected. The dough was super sticky at first, but after kneading it turned smooth and the loaf actually sounds hollow—nice!

  46. 3 stars
Baking bread at home is too much work, I’m sticking with store-bought. Nice recipe tho.

  47. User avatar Miss Wallace Wyman says:

This is the best bread I’ve ever made! Super easy to follow. Thank you! 🍞

  48. User avatar jeni.corkery96 says:

    2 stars
Meh… mine collapsed a little after baking. Could be over-proofing or I knocked the air out when transferring to the pan. Still tasted okay with butter.

  49. 1 star
Can’t believe I wasted my time on this. It didn’t work and now the house smells like burnt flour. Never again.

  50. User avatar shon.schultz says:

    4 stars
Solid recipe. I let it rise a bit longer than 1 hour because my kitchen was cold, and it still doubled eventually. Great flavor, not too sweet.

  51. User avatar sharilyn.oberbrunner says:

    5 stars
This bread recipe is amazing! It came out so fluffy and delicious. Definitely a 5-star! 🥖

  53. 5 stars
Turned out super fluffy for me! I was worried about the 110°F water but it worked great. Crust is perfect—will bake again.

    1. User avatar Orange Dartwing says:

      5 stars
Nice! I’m always skeptical about that exact 110°F number but glad it worked for you. Did you end up kneading for longer than “a few minutes” or stick to the quick knead?

  54. User avatar keven.raynor31 says:

    4 stars
Homemade bread is the best! I added some herbs like rosemary in mine and it turned out great. Thank you for the recipe!

    1. 5 stars
I totally agree! Homemade bread is so much better than store bought. Herbs are a genius idea! I’m gonna try that next time.

  55. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

    4 stars
Followed the steps exactly and the rise worked, but my bread was a little dense. I think I didn’t knead long enough. Still tasty though.

  56. User avatar Loonquawl and Phouchg says:

    2. User avatar gaston.jakubowski5 says:

      2 stars
I dunno about that. Seems like it could mess up the bread flavor, right?

    One word: Delicious.

    1. User avatar setsuko.zemlak34 says:

      4 stars
Delicious for sure! I did 425°F though and it still came out kinda good… maybe next time I’ll follow 375 😅

    2. 5 stars
Agreed—this is the real deal. The rise and the hollow-sound check are spot on.

  59. User avatar bruna.terry41 says:

    2 stars
NO EGG?? How can you make bread without egg?! It can’t be that good, right?

    1. User avatar marci.lemke says:

      5 stars
You’d be surprised! You don’t need eggs to make good bread. This recipe is simple and it turns out great!

  60. 5 stars
Bread success! 10/10. Also the smell while baking is insane—like bakery, for real.

  61. User avatar Tom Bombadil says:

    4 stars
Okay, not gonna lie, I forgot to add the sugar, but the bread still turned out pretty good! I knew I was missing something but it worked. 4 stars.

  62. User avatar raymonde.hill says:

    2 stars
I’m sorry but 1 hour + 30 minutes didn’t work for me. The dough didn’t really double, and the loaf came out dense. Maybe my yeast was old—probably was.

    1. User avatar Doreen Christiansen II says:

      4 stars
Ugh, I’m sorry! If it didn’t really double and came out dense, old yeast is definitely a top suspect. Did it look foamy when you mixed it with the warm water, or was it kind of “dead” right away?

  63. 3 stars
375°F feels low for 30 minutes—mine looked golden but the center was slightly underdone. Would bake 5–10 minutes more.

    1. User avatar ira.breitenberg1992 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—375°F can be a little gentle for 30 min, especially if your loaf pan is deeper or the dough was cold. I usually go closer to 35–40 and rely on internal temp (about 190–200°F).

    2. User avatar johnnie.langworth says:

      4 stars
Huh, mine was golden in 30 min at 375 but the center was kinda doughy too… I just let it sit longer when it came out. Maybe I didn’t let the second rise fully happen. 5–10 min more makes sense.

  64. User avatar kaley.kunde25 says:

    1 star
Why’s the water warm? Isn’t that bad for the yeast? My bread was like a rock. Not trying again.

  65. User avatar zackary.effertz47 says:

    1 star
Homemade bread? Really? It’s easier to just buy bread at the store. Who has time for this? 1 star.

    1. 5 stars
I get that making bread seems like a lot, but it’s so rewarding! The smell alone is worth it! 🥖 5 stars!

    2. User avatar margarett.torphy says:

      4 stars
But store bread is full of preservatives and stuff. Homemade is way healthier, if you can spare some time! 4 stars.

  66. 2 stars
My yeast didn’t really bubble when I added it—still made bread, but it was more like a flat-ish loaf. Probably my water was too hot?

  67. User avatar shaneka.bauch86 says:

    3 stars
My loaf collapsed after the second rise 😭 I think my yeast was old. Still, the instructions were clear and the process was easy.

I tried this recipe and my dough didn’t rise at all! I think I might’ve used cold water by mistake.

  70. User avatar jerrell.bernhard34 says:

    4 stars
My dough was super sticky at first, but after kneading it smoothed out. Letting it rise longer (about 90 min) helped a lot. Would make again.

  79. User avatar rodrick.davis19 says:

Not gonna lie, I didn’t measure the water temp with a thermometer… I just went warm. Results were okay but not amazing. Still eatable!

    1. 4 stars
Honestly, same 😅 I eyeballed the water too—still came out eatable but yeah, “not amazing” tracks. Next time, try closer to 110°F so the yeast wakes up right.

  80. 2 stars
What’s the point of making bread when you can just buy it? 🤷‍♂️
