Grilled Lobster Tails

January 13, 2025

Grilled lobster tails are the epitome of indulgence, offering a delicious, smoky flavor while keeping the natural sweetness and tenderness of lobster intact. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply craving a luxurious meal, grilled lobster tails are a simple yet impressive dish that’s sure to wow your guests or elevate your dinner. With a few key ingredients and a grill, you can enjoy this succulent seafood delicacy in the comfort of your own home.

The beauty of grilled lobster tails lies in the method of cooking. The lobster meat is naturally delicate and sweet, and grilling it brings out its rich flavors while adding a smoky char that enhances its taste. The key to perfectly grilled lobster tails is not overcooking them, as the meat can easily become tough and rubbery if left on the grill for too long. When done correctly, the lobster is tender, juicy, and full of flavor.

To prepare the lobster tails, start by cutting down the middle of the shell with kitchen scissors or a sharp knife, being careful not to cut through the meat. You can gently pull the meat out of the shell, keeping it attached at the base, and place it on top of the shell for an elegant presentation. This also makes it easier to season and grill the lobster. Before grilling, season the lobster tails with a generous amount of butter, garlic, and lemon juice. The butter adds richness, while the garlic and lemon provide aromatic flavor that perfectly complements the lobster.

Next, preheat your grill to medium-high heat and brush the grates with oil to prevent sticking. Place the lobster tails on the grill, meat side down, and cook for about 5-7 minutes. Flip the lobster tails over, brushing them with more butter and seasoning, and continue grilling for another 3-5 minutes until the meat is opaque and tender. A good rule of thumb is to cook the lobster for about 1 minute per ounce.

For the finishing touch, serve the lobster tails with extra melted butter and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. Garnish with fresh herbs, such as parsley or thyme, for added freshness. The combination of smoky char and buttery, garlicky lobster creates a dish that’s both decadent and satisfying. Whether served as the main course or as part of a seafood feast, grilled lobster tails offer a refined dining experience that’s surprisingly easy to make.

This was absolute heaven! The garlic butter really made it pop. Definitely doing this again.

I dunno, tastes kinda fishy for lobsters, I think I overcooked it 😕. Not sure if I will try again.

    Wut’s paprika? Can I use any seasoning? I don’t have lobster tails either… :-/

    1. User avatar jared.leuschke says:

      3 stars
Lobster tails can be expensive, maybe try shrimp? And just use whatever spices you got, it’s cooking after all!

    2. User avatar leopoldo.hartmann says:

      4 stars
Paprika is a spice made from dried peppers. You can use cayenne or even chili powder if you want. Just don’t skip the butter and garlic! 😋

  4. User avatar carmen.satterfield says:

    3 stars
Too much garlic! Next time, less garlic plz.

Lobster tails? Whut? I’m just here for the butter honestly.

  11. 5 stars
So good!!! Best way 2 cook lobster, I just tossed on a bit of lemon juice🤤!

  12. User avatar monroe.krajcik95 says:

I used frozen lobster tails (partially thawed). Texture was a bit off, more watery, but the flavor was still great thanks to the butter mix.

    1. User avatar Jayson Frami says:

      4 stars
That watery texture makes sense with partially thawed lobster tails—next time try fully thawing them (and patting them dry) before grilling. Glad the butter mix still nailed the flavor though!

  13. 5 stars
The steps are clear, especially cutting the shell carefully. I was nervous but it came out tender, not rubbery. Great recipe.

  14. 5 stars
This recipe is fantastic! The lobster came out so juicy and flavorful. Will definitely make again.

Made these last night—wow. The garlic-lemon butter is perfect and the timing worked out (mine took closer to 4 min after flipping). Will definitely grill again.

  18. 2 stars
It was ok, but honestly, I prefer my lobster in a stew. Not sure why people grill it.

  19. User avatar mia.kertzmann1998 says:

So good, but why do you need to put butter? Can’t it be healthy without it?

    1. User avatar leon.schiller84 says:

      3 stars
But you can skip the butter if you want to be healthier! Maybe use olive oil instead?

    2. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

Butter adds flavor and richness! Plus, it’s a delicacy, not a diet food. Enjoy it as is!

Can you use Old Bay instead of paprika? Asking for a friend. 🤔

    1. User avatar joe_banana says:

    5 stars
Wow, these were a hit at the party! Everyone loved them, and I felt like a pro. Thanks for this!

  27. 2 stars
So I followed the steps but they were still chewy. Maybe I grilled too long? Any advice on cooking times would be helpful!

  28. 3 stars
The instructions are pretty clear, except I don’t have kitchen shears. I just used a sharp knife and it was messy, lol. Flavor was still good though.

  29. User avatar claud.johnson49 says:

    2 stars
Way too much butter for my taste. Also I’m not sure why paprika—seems unnecessary. But my family ate it all so I guess it works.

Lobster gonna cost too much! I don’t know if I can afford this haha

What’s paprika? Do you have to use it? Seems like just extra work.

  34. 3 stars
too much butter for my liking. Thought it would be different, maybe add olive oil next time?

  35. 3 stars
Did anyone else think this was too greasy? Butter can make it too oily, maybe less next time?

  36. 2 stars
I tried this but my lobster was overcooked. Very sad. Followed the time exactly.

  37. User avatar brianna.jast83 says:

    3 stars
Way too fancy for me, tho I did try it. Not sure I like lobster. 😂

Lobster can be a bit much for some! But if you like the butter and garlic, you might find a way to enjoy it. 😂

  38. User avatar leopoldo.ferry2007 says:

    4 stars
Too much butter? Maybe try olive oil next time. But overall, good!

  39. User avatar mitchell.okuneva97 says:

Easy and delicious! Just a little too much butter for my taste. Next time I’ll cut it down a bit. 4/5.

    1. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

      5 stars
I totally get that! Too much butter can mask the lobster’s flavor. Maybe try using olive oil next time for a lighter taste.

    1. User avatar laquita.zboncak says:

Grilled lobster tails? It’s actually so easy! Just follow instructions.

  55. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

Made this last night—so simple and the garlic-butter combo is legit. Mine were done a tiny bit fast, but still juicy. Will absolutely grill again.

    1. User avatar jay.batz40 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! That garlic-butter + lemon is the whole point. I’m glad yours stayed juicy even if it ran a bit quick—lobster is so easy to overdo.

  56. 5 stars
This looks amazing! Can’t wait to try it this weekend. #foodie

  57. User avatar chadwick.anderson says:

    5 stars
This was sooo good! The butter mix was perfect! I could eat this every day! 5/5! 🦞

  58. User avatar kristan.walter1963 says:

Why do you need paprika? I just use salt and pepper. It seems like a waste of time.

  59. User avatar kymberly.rath1996 says:

    3 stars
I tried this recipe and it was kind of bland. I added some chili flakes and it was better but not sure if I’d make it again.

  60. 3 stars
I followed exactly but mine didn’t turn out like yours. Sad face 😞. Maybe I’ll try again.

  61. User avatar margy.treutel56 says:

    3 stars
I think the garlic amount is too much. It was kinda punchy and almost bitter, even with fresh lemon. Next time I’ll use 1 clove.

  62. User avatar Arthur Philip Deodat says:

    3 stars
not sure about grilling them…. isn’t that a bit odd? I just used a pan. still turned out ok tho. 3/5

  63. 1 star
    Lobster? Not my kinda food.

  64. User avatar cecily.herman42 says:

    4 stars
This tasted restaurant-y. I used regular paprika (not smoked) and it still came out great. Parsley garnish makes it look fancy.

  65. User avatar cecilia.erdman4 says:

    4 stars
So simple but it actually tastes fancy. I didn’t have fresh parsley so I used dried and it was still really good.

  66. User avatar art.mitchell99 says:

    2 stars
I don’t think grilled lobster is worth it. Tastes the same as steamed to me.

  67. 4 stars
Paprika in lobster butter?! Weird in theory, but it adds a nice color and subtle warmth. Didn’t overwhelm the flavor.

  68. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    4 stars
My grill flare-ups were crazy. I think I put too much butter on, but once I calmed it down, the lobster turned out excellent.

  69. 5 stars
Absolutely delicious! This was my first time grilling lobster tails and they turned out perfect. The butter mixture was fantastic!

    1. User avatar deborah.rowe43 says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome! I love grilling lobster tails. The butter mixture makes them so tasty. Going to try this recipe soon!

  70. User avatar vern.bogan says:

    2 stars
I tried this and ended up burning the lobster. 😩 Too heat!

  71. User avatar Super Saiyan Blue Goku says:

    5 stars
Tried this tonight and the flavor was spot on—garlic + lemon really pops. I was nervous about the shell cut, but it worked great.

    1. User avatar jody.gerlach says:

      5 stars
Yes!! Garlic + lemon is the move. I also get nervous about cutting the shell, but your comment makes me feel better—might try it this week.

  72. User avatar paul.wilkinson1986 says:

    4 stars
I dont have a grill so i did it on a cast iron skillet, and it still came out decent. Kinda sad it’s not as smoky but taste was there.

  73. User avatar stacee.dietrich77 says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, cutting the shell with shears scares me lol. But the instruction is actually clear. If you’re careful, it’s doable—mine turned out pretty decent.

  74. User avatar letisha.kshlerin2015 says:

    2 stars
Five minutes one side and 3-5 the other is maybe too fast? I feel like lobster always needs more time, unless you’re using tiny tails… mine was kinda undercooked.

    1. User avatar randolph.botsford50 says:

      5 stars
Totally fair point—lobster can be tricky. 5 minutes + 3-5 minutes depends a lot on tail size and grill heat. If yours was undercooked, you might need closer to 6-8 minutes total on the second side (or just go until it’s fully opaque). I also try not to blast it too high.

  75. User avatar Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz says:

    5 stars
Wow. The whole house smelled like a fancy seafood restaurant. I served it with rice and it was gone instantly.

    1. User avatar rodney.schaden1959 says:

      4 stars
Okay but real talk—how did you not overcook it? Mine went rubbery once… I think I flipped too soon. Yours sounds perfect though!

    2. 5 stars
Love hearing this! The butter-garlic-lemon combo really makes it smell “restaurant level.” 😋

  76. User avatar tyler.pfannerstill says:

    4 stars
I did almost the same thing but my grilling time ran a bit long, so mine got a little chewy. Still tasted great though. Next time I’ll keep a closer eye on the “opaque” part.

  77. User avatar zulma.schaden86 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but my lobster took closer to 8 minutes total to turn opaque. Maybe my grill runs hotter—watch it like a hawk.

    1. User avatar halflife4 says:

      5 stars
Good point—lobster can definitely vary with size and grill temp. 5 min + 3–5 is more like a guideline; watching for opacity is the real key.

  78. User avatar carson.sporer says:

    5 stars
Wow, this looks insanely simple for how fancy it feels. The butter-garlic-lemon combo is perfect for lobster tails—definitely trying this weekend.

  79. 5 stars
I was skeptical about cooking time, but 5 min + 4 min worked for my 7 oz tails. The paprika in the butter is a nice touch too.

  80. User avatar CTRLplusW says:

    3 stars
Mine stuck a little to the grates. Next time I’ll oil the grates more or use foil. Still tasted great though.

  81. User avatar Ice Wraith says:

    4 stars
I tried following exactly, but my grill runs hot. I had to pull them early and then they were still perfect—so I guess it’s forgiving?

    1. User avatar dolores.schuster71 says:

      5 stars
Honestly that sounds about right—lobster’s super forgiving once you’re watching the doneness. Mine runs hot too, so I always start checking a minute or two early.

  82. User avatar cliff.pfannerstill1954 says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but I think 2 cloves of garlic is too much for me personally. The lemon helped balance it, so I’m giving it a solid score.

    1. User avatar Snow Bear says:

      4 stars
I used 1 clove once and it still tasted garlicky to me. But hey, grilled lobster is forgiving. Your score seems fair.

    2. 5 stars
Totally get that—garlic can be a lot depending on how strong yours is. The lemon balancing makes sense though. Glad you liked it!

  83. User avatar alda.nienow says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about grilling lobster tails for that short—mine were underdone the first time. Second try I added like 2 minutes and it was perfect.

    1. User avatar dollie.rempel says:

      5 stars
Totally—5 + 3 felt way too fast the first time for me too. I’ve learned it really depends on tail size. Your adjustment makes sense.

    2. User avatar raylene.oconner says:

      2 stars
Wait, 5 minutes flesh side down and then 3-5 after? That’s like 8-10 total… mine was rubbery last time, never again. I’d rather steam them first or use a thermometer.

  84. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

    2 stars
Confusing part: “cut from the outside” sounds risky 😅 but the flavor is so good I’d try again with better lobster prep.

  85. 4 stars
Not bad, but I think 6-8 oz should be cooked a little less/ more depending on thickness. Mine got slightly overdone at the end.

  86. 4 stars
I followed the steps exactly and it came out tender, not rubbery. Also love the paprika—gives it that slight color.

  87. User avatar lucrecia.schuppe33 says:

    3 stars
It says “to taste salt and pepper” which is helpful but also… vague lol. I maybe over-salted. Still delicious though.

  88. 3 stars
Medium-high seems kinda vague… I cooked mine on a hot grill and the shells charred before the meat was done. Maybe lower heat? Also, don’t skip the salt/pepper.

    1. 5 stars
Yeah “medium-high” can totally burn lobster. I do medium-low and still get it cooked through—5 min flesh-side down felt too aggressive on my grill too.

  89. User avatar titus.hegmann6 says:

    5 stars
One word: amazing. (Ok two words: best ever.)

    1. User avatar lucien.hyatt says:

      5 stars
Right?? The butter-garlic-lemon combo is unreal. I grilled mine a few extra minutes and they still came out juicy. Best ever indeed 😄

    2. User avatar maude.daniel says:

      2 stars
I mean… lobster is expensive, so I’m skeptical it’s “best ever” from just butter + paprika lol. Also fresh lobster vs frozen matters, and my tail took way longer than 5 min

  90. User avatar micah.reichert says:

    2 stars
1 teaspoon paprika won’t change anything… maybe. I just cooked lobster once and it came out chewy, so I’m wary. But I’ll try your method for sure.
