Gnocchi With Herb Sauce

January 27, 2025

Gnocchi with herb sauce is a delightful dish that brings together soft, pillowy potato gnocchi and a fresh, aromatic herb sauce. This recipe is perfect for those who want a comforting yet light meal that’s bursting with flavor. The herb sauce is simple to make, and it pairs beautifully with the gnocchi, creating a satisfying dish that feels both indulgent and refreshing.

To begin, prepare your gnocchi. You can use store-bought gnocchi for convenience, or if you’re up for it, homemade gnocchi adds an extra touch of love to the dish. Boil the gnocchi in salted water until they float to the top, indicating they’re done. Once cooked, drain them and set aside.

While the gnocchi cooks, make the herb sauce. In a large pan, heat some olive oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, being careful not to burn it. Then, add a mix of fresh herbs such as basil, thyme, rosemary, and parsley. If you want a more intense herb flavor, you can also add a handful of spinach or arugula for an extra green boost. Let the herbs cook gently in the oil, releasing their fragrant oils.

Next, add a splash of vegetable or chicken broth to create a smooth sauce base. Stir in a little butter or olive oil to give the sauce a rich, velvety texture. Allow it to simmer for a few minutes, letting the flavors combine. For a creamy twist, you can add a splash of heavy cream or a dollop of mascarpone cheese to the sauce.

Once your sauce is ready, gently toss the gnocchi in the pan with the herb sauce, making sure each piece is coated with the fragrant mixture. Cook for an additional minute or two, allowing the gnocchi to absorb some of the flavors.

Serve the gnocchi with a generous sprinkle of freshly grated Parmesan or Pecorino Romano cheese on top, along with a few more fresh herbs for garnish. The creamy, aromatic herb sauce enhances the delicate gnocchi, making this dish a comforting, flavorful meal.

This gnocchi is versatile enough to be enjoyed on its own or paired with a side salad or grilled vegetables. It’s a simple, yet elegant dish that’s sure to satisfy your cravings for something comforting and full of fresh flavors.

Gnocchi taste like little pillows of joy! But why lemon? Seems weird. Still, I might give it a shot.

Gnocchi is good, but homemade is better! Store-bought never tastes right, ya know?

I don’t like gnocchi that much, but I tried this recipe. Didn’t really impress me though.

That’s too bad! I thought the herb sauce made it really fresh. Maybe you just don’t like the texture of the gnocchi? 🤔

    2. 3 stars
I love how easy this recipe is! But hey, everyone’s taste is different. What did you find unimpressive about it?

  12. User avatar bill.langworth1995 says:

I followed it pretty much exactly, but mine tasted a bit too acidic from the lemon. Next time I’ll start with less lemon juice and salt to balance.

    1. 5 stars
That makes sense—lemon can get punchy fast. I usually add it last and a little at a time until it tastes right. Great tip to start with less!

    2. 3 stars
Maybe it needed more garlic? Or like, more butter? I feel like lemon juice always makes everything sour, even when you “to taste” salt. Next time try less lemon and more pepper? idk.

I made this for my family and they said it was too bland. Maybe add more garlic or some cheese for flavor? Idk.

I don’t have fresh herbs, can I use dried ones instead? Anyone tried that?

    1. 5 stars
Yes, dried herbs work fine! Just use a bit less since they are more concentrated. I’ve done it and it tasted great!

  16. User avatar adan.jacobson says:

Not gonna lie, 1 minute garlic is tricky—mine went from fragrant to slightly burnt fast. Still tasted good, but I’d lower the heat.

Quick and easy! Perfect for a weeknight dinner. Thanks for sharing this recipe!

Garlic + lemon + basil = good combo. I used dried parsley because I was out of fresh and it was fine, not amazing but fine.

    1. User avatar evette.haag55 says:

      4 stars
Totally agree—garlic + lemon really brightens it up. Dried parsley is a good save when you’re out of fresh. I’ve found it tastes more “round” if you add it a minute with the garlic.

    2. User avatar verdell.hansen says:

      2 stars
Hmm. I think basil needs to be fresh or it gets kinda flat. Dried parsley can work, but then it’s basically a different vibe. Next time, try a pinch of oregano or—wait—would that ruin it?

Basil and parsley together… honestly I wasn’t sure, but it works. Kinda like a light herb-lemon butter situation. Would totally make again.

    1. User avatar wilson.beer says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—basil + parsley together is underrated. That lemon makes it feel super fresh, like a quick herb-butter vibe.

Yum! I added some red pepper flakes for a kick. So good!

  21. User avatar bryce.lakin1982 says:

So simple but so good! I’ll make this again for sure.

Sounds easy, but isn’t it just a bit plain? More like a side dish than a main, right?

    2. User avatar steve_maga says:

I’m glad you liked it! It’s a family favorite over here. The herbs really bring it to life!

  22. User avatar ethelene.boyer87 says:

Too much lemon juice for my taste. Next time I’ll cut it down for sure!

    1. User avatar JinJenz says:

      4 stars
I totally get what you mean! Lemon can be overpowering sometimes. Less is definitely more!

  23. User avatar sally.anderson1958 says:

    4 stars
More garlic! Next time I’m doubling the garlic and maybe adding some chili flakes.

  24. User avatar Warner Little says:

Disappointed. The sauce was bland. I expected better. 🙁

    1. User avatar marshall.murray87 says:

      4 stars
I thought the sauce was delicious! Did you follow the recipe exactly? Maybe use more herbs next time?

    2. User avatar tommie.gusikowski says:

      2 stars
Bland? 😲 I dunno, I thought it was just fine. You might have forgot the salt or something?

  25. User avatar lavenia.metz56 says:

    4 stars
Not bad, but it needed more sauce. I doubled the olive oil and added a splash of pasta water and it came together much better.

  26. User avatar jesus.greenfelder85 says:

    4 stars
Pretty easy weeknight meal. Next time I’ll add a little parmesan or a splash more lemon—though the garlic flavor was perfect.

  27. User avatar sadie.jast95 says:

Wow, super easy and tastes fancy. 10/10. 😅

Is it normal that my gnocchi didn’t float? I thought it was supposed to but they just sunk to the bottom. Help!

Wasn’t sure about the lemon juice, but it actually was a good touch!
