Easy Baked Chicken Parmesan

January 25, 2024

Chicken Parmesan is one of those universally loved dishes that brings comfort to the table no matter the season. With its golden breaded chicken, savory tomato sauce, and melty layer of cheese, it’s the kind of meal that feels like a warm hug. This baked version keeps all the flavor you love but skips the mess and excess oil that comes with frying, making it a weeknight-friendly favorite.

What makes baked Chicken Parmesan so appealing is its simplicity. Instead of standing over a pan of hot oil, the chicken is baked in the oven until crispy and golden. It still gets that satisfying crunch, thanks to a well-seasoned breadcrumb coating, but with less effort and cleanup. Once baked, it’s topped with marinara sauce and a generous handful of shredded mozzarella or parmesan, then returned to the oven just long enough to melt into a bubbling, cheesy topping.

The result is everything you want in a comfort food dish, juicy, crispy chicken with rich tomato flavor and plenty of gooey cheese. It’s hearty and filling but doesn’t feel heavy, and it pairs beautifully with pasta, salad, or roasted veggies. It’s also great for meal prep. Leftovers reheat well and can even be used in a sandwich or wrap the next day.

Baked Chicken Parmesan is a smart way to enjoy a classic dish without the extra grease or time commitment. It’s approachable, adaptable, and always satisfying. Whether you’re cooking for your family, hosting a casual dinner, or simply craving something familiar and delicious, this dish delivers every time.

And the best part? It’s one of those meals that pleases picky eaters and foodies alike. No need to reinvent the wheel – just bake it.

Not bad, but I wish it had a little more sauce inside the coating. It’s more like chicken with toppings than full-on chicken parm vibes.

  2. 1 star
Why you put GARLIC?! That dont go with chicken! Not following this one again.

  3. User avatar Colin the Security Robot says:

    3 stars
Ok so I used regular Parmesan but maybe not grated enough—coating was a little clumpy. Still tasty though. Would recommend mixing longer.

  4. 2 stars
Easy, yes. But why would anyone use butter and not just olive oil? Seems unhealthy.

  5. 4 stars
I accidentally used cheddar cheese instead of mozzarella… still yummy! 😂

  6. User avatar halina.littel says:

    4 stars
Easy to make! I’m not a cook, but my kids loved it. I’ll try it again for sure!

  7. 2 stars
I thought Chicken Parm was supposed to be fried? Why bake? Odd.

    1. 5 stars
Baking makes it healthier! Plus, it’s so easy to clean up. Love this recipe!

    2. User avatar wildebeest says:

      2 stars
But is it really Chicken Parm if you don’t fry it? Seems off to me. Just sayin’.

  8. 3 stars
I mean, it’s okay but wasn’t anything special. The chicken was a bit dry.

  9. User avatar oswaldo.homenick52 says:

I don’t like parmesan, is there a way to substitute it? Or can you just leave it off?

    1. User avatar eddie.mann88 says:

      4 stars
You could try using nutritional yeast or another cheese like mozzarella if you don’t want parmesan! It should still taste good!

    2. User avatar jermaine.orn93 says:

      3 stars
Just leave it off. It’s not the end of the world. You’ll still have chicken and sauce!

This was SO good! My family devoured it in minutes, definitely a keeper! 🍽️

    1. User avatar lola.parker says:

      5 stars
Yes!! Garlic powder + marinara + cheese is my love language 😄 I made it exactly like this and it was so easy—crispy enough and super flavorful.

    2. User avatar Trillian says:

      4 stars
Sounds good but I think 20 min might be short for thicker chicken breasts. I usually bake longer till it hits like 165°F, otherwise it’s a bit dry. Still gonna try though.

Not bad, but my breadcrumb mix turned out a little dry. Next time I’ll add a splash more butter or maybe an egg to help it cling.

    1. 5 stars
Totally makes sense—at 1/4 cup melted butter for 1 cup breadcrumbs, it can end up a bit dry. A splash more butter or adding an egg (or even a spoon of marinara) would definitely help the crumbs cling better. Thanks for the tip!

  24. User avatar lai.koepp33 says:

    4 stars
My kids loved it! We had it with spaghetti, just like in Italy! 😁

  25. User avatar humberto.ratke99 says:

Better than any restaurant! I paired it with spaghetti and it was a hit! 🥳

  27. User avatar remedios.abernathy7 says:

    4 stars
Yummmm! The cheese is everything. I would suggest using more marinara sauce though.

    1. 3 stars
I dunno, I think it has enough sauce. Too much can make it soggy, right? Just a thought.

    2. User avatar Slartibartfast says:

      5 stars
Totally agree! More marinara would make it saucier and yummier. I always drown mine in sauce! 😋

  28. 2 stars
Why use butter? Ain’t olive oil healthier? 🤷‍♂️

    1. User avatar ludie.moen says:

      4 stars
Olive oil is definitely healthier, but butter adds a rich flavor! Can’t go wrong with either in moderation. 😊

    2. 3 stars
Butter makes it taste way better! Like, idk if olive oil can do that haha. 🤷‍♀️

  29. User avatar marx.vonrueden2 says:

    2 stars
I don’t know if I did something wrong but the chicken turned out kinda dry. I followed the recipe exactly.

  30. User avatar mason.bartoletti51 says:

    2 stars
This is not real Italian food! You need more spices and less cheese.

    1. 4 stars
Italian food is all about balance! The cheese adds creaminess and flavor. Maybe you just need to try it!

    2. User avatar winnie.dicki1996 says:

      5 stars
Less cheese? Are you kidding? That’s like saying pizza should have no cheese!

  31. User avatar carlee.corkery52 says:

    3 stars
I don’t know, 400°F seems a bit high? Mine browned too fast on the bottom before the chicken was fully done. I ended up covering with foil.

  32. User avatar gayle.swaniawski89 says:

    4 stars
Yummy chicken parm! Is the marinara sauce from a jar acceptable? 🤷‍♂️

  33. User avatar norman.bailey74 says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have parmesan so I used cheddar instead. It still turned out good! 😂

  34. User avatar gene.howe41 says:

    3 stars
Can you really call this Parmesan if there’s no actual cheese in it? I mean, come on!

  35. User avatar Russell Ingleaves says:

    2 stars
What is marinara sauce??? Can I use ketchup instead? Asking for a friend.

I’m so glad you loved it! I always add some extra cheese on top for more flavor. 😊

  38. User avatar ruth.bartoletti1973 says:

    2 stars
Way too salty for my taste. Followed the recipe exactly and yikes! 😳

    1. 4 stars
I totally understand. I think I put too much salt the first time I made it too. Maybe try less salt next time? 😅

    2. 2 stars
Salt? What are you talkin about? That’s like the most imp ingredient, or else its bland! 😂

  39. User avatar denis.cronin1962 says:

    2 stars
I dunno. Chicken kinda dry for me. Maybe I did it wrong?

  40. User avatar casey.dach31 says:

    2 stars
I don’t know about this recipe. Chicken in the oven for 25 mins? That seems like too much. 😬

  41. 4 stars
Basil on top is a nice touch, but I forgot and used dried oregano. Still tasted good though. Maybe 4 stars for the effort 😅

  42. User avatar dwana.murphy says:

    5 stars
Yummm! I added some crushed red pepper for a kick. Will definitely make again!

  43. User avatar kerry.gerhold8 says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have breadcrumbs so I used crushed chips. Still tasted great! Who knew?

    1. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

      5 stars
That’s a clever idea! Chips do add a nice crunch. I might try that next time!

  44. User avatar rayna.powlowski75 says:

    5 stars
Yum!! This made my kitchen smell amazing! I added some spices too, like cayenne. 🔥

  45. User avatar denis.ledner says:

    4 stars
Nice recipe! I served it with spaghetti and it was a hit at my dinner party. 🎉

  46. User avatar ezequiel.kulas2025 says:

    3 stars
Okay, but where does the basil go? I just tossed it on top. Lol.

  47. User avatar felix.schumm76 says:

    5 stars
Followed the steps exactly. Crispy coating stayed nice, and the cheese got properly bubbly. Family asked for it again, so… yeah.

  48. 4 stars
Super easy and quick! I added some extra cheese and it turned out great!

  49. User avatar christin.will says:

    3 stars
I thought it was okay, but my kids didn’t like the marinara. Should have tried something else.

  50. 5 stars
I love anything with parmesan, so I’m biased. Still, this was restaurant vibes for a weeknight. Bravo.

    1. User avatar herbert.daniel50 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—parmesan makes everything better. I made this on a random weeknight and it *did* feel like restaurant food. The breadcrumb + marinara + mozz combo is perfect. 👏

  51. User avatar williams.mraz2008 says:

    1 star
Why does the cooking time say 20 minutes? Mine took longer! What’s up with that?

    1. 4 stars
Sometimes ovens can be off! I had the same issue before. You might want to check if yours runs cool or something. Cooking times can vary a lot.

  52. 4 stars
Pretty good, but mine was a little dry after 25 minutes. Next time I’ll pound the chicken thinner and maybe check a minute earlier.

    1. User avatar shasta.yundt5 says:

      5 stars
Good tip! I usually pound mine a bit thinner too—keeps it from drying out. Also, I stir the breadcrumb mix right before coating so it browns evenly. Might check at 18–20 min next time.

  53. User avatar guillermo.moen says:

    2 stars
I don’t get the melted butter step. It was kinda greasy on the tray. Flavor was okay though, so I guess I’ll try less butter.

    1. User avatar lessie.ondricka98 says:

      3 stars
Melted butter is supposed to make it crispy, but I think your tray got too hot or wasn’t lined. Try parchment. Also I’m confused—should you melt it with the marinara? Lol. Either way, less butter sounds right.

    2. User avatar donte.baumbach78 says:

      5 stars
I totally get what you mean—4 chicken breasts and only 1/4 cup butter can still seem greasy on the tray. I switched to brushing the chicken lightly with butter (or even spraying) and it cuts down the slick mess while keeping the coating toasty.

  54. User avatar ermelinda.vandervort38 says:

    2 stars
I don’t think this tasted like real parmesan. Kinda bland. What’s with the butter? Can I skip it?

    1. User avatar emerson.cummings11 says:

      4 stars
I totally get what you mean! Sometimes store-bought parmesan can be disappointing. The butter helps with flavor, but if you don’t like it, you could try using olive oil instead. Don’t give up on this recipe, it’s still yum!

  55. 4 stars
Yum! I added some oregano too. My family loved it!

    1. User avatar Jarvan IV says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome! Oregano is a great touch! What kind of pasta did you serve it with?

    2. User avatar kendall.parker says:

      2 stars
I dunno, I think Parmesan by itself is good enough. Adding oregano seems like too much.

  56. User avatar edmond.schowalter44 says:

    5 stars
    Yum! 10/10! 👌

  57. 5 stars
Pretty simple and came out delicious

  58. 3 stars
It was okay, but I think it needed more seasoning. The breadcrumbs were kinda bland.

  59. User avatar reid.thompson1966 says:

    3 stars
Too much butter in this. Next time, less butter!

    1. User avatar evan.streich2021 says:

      4 stars
I disagree! The butter makes it so rich and tasty. You should try it like this before judging!

    2. 3 stars
Less butter!? But that’s what makes chicken parm yum! I don’t think you get it.

  60. User avatar chantay.mayer says:

    5 stars
So good! Takes me back to when I was a kid. 10/10 would make again! ❤️

    1. 5 stars
I remember my mom making something like this! It’s such a classic. ❤️

    2. 3 stars
Sounds easy, but chicken parmesan is so much better with fresh ingredients. Not sure about all that frozen stuff.

  61. 4 stars
The ingredient list is straightforward and I had everything on hand. Next time I’ll use panko instead of regular breadcrumbs for extra crunch.

  62. 1 star
This was not it! I burned it. Followed the directions exactly.

  63. User avatar Pasta Fasta says:

    4 stars
Really good flavor. I’d probably add a pinch more garlic next time and maybe a little chili flakes because 1/2 tsp garlic powder felt mild to me.

  64. User avatar ursula.runte36 says:

    2 stars
I didn’t have all the ingredients so I used cheddar instead of mozzarella. It melted but tasted weird…

    1. User avatar Super Saiyan 2 Goku says:

      4 stars
Cheddar is great too! It’s just different. Next time try mixing it with some mozzarella if you have it!

    2. User avatar Elidia Rutherford says:

      3 stars
Honestly, I think any cheese would work as long as you like it. But yeah, mozzarella is kinda the classic flavor.

  65. User avatar aida.padberg says:

    1 star
This is just chicken with sauce and cheese! I’m not sure why people rave about it. -_-

  66. 5 stars
This was so easy and delicious! My family loved it! Definitely a keeper!

  67. 5 stars
Perfect for busy weeknights! Quick and so tasty! 👍

  68. User avatar Gandalf the Grey says:

    4 stars
I tried this, but I used chicken thighs instead. It was still good! Still flew! ⭐⭐⭐

    1. User avatar ashanti.dietrich says:

      4 stars
Glad it turned out good! Chicken thighs are juicier anyway. I might try that next time. 🍗

  69. User avatar larraine.adams46 says:

    3 stars
Kinda bland for me. I followed the seasoning exactly—maybe my garlic powder was old? I added extra pepper and it helped.

    1. User avatar miesha.okon says:

      4 stars
Yeah I get that. I followed it once and it tasted kinda flat—my breadcrumb mix definitely needed more salt/seasoning. Next time I’ll toast the breadcrumbs a bit and add extra garlic powder (fresh, not old). Pepper helps too like you said.

    2. User avatar luis.schiller says:

      3 stars
Huh, bland? I think it’s more about the marinara—like if your sauce is sweet/plain it’ll ruin everything. Also 20 min at 400°F sounds a little short for thick breasts, so mine had to bake longer and then it tasted better. But extra pepper is fine 😅

  70. User avatar joe_banana says:

    5 stars
My kids devoured it. I even stretched it with a side salad and they didn’t complain once. Easy weeknight win.

  71. User avatar jodi.wiegand58 says:

    4 stars
Easy to follow recipe! This is my go-to for weeknight dinners. Thanks!

    1. 5 stars
I’m glad you found it easy! It really is a lifesaver on busy nights. 🍝

  72. User avatar sheldon.leannon says:

    4 stars
I overcooked mine a tiny bit at 20 minutes and it was drier than I like, but the second bake with cheese was perfect. Timing tweak needed.

  73. 3 stars
Is it really that easy? I mean, chicken and cheese is like a lot of other recipes. Not sure if I’ll try it.

    1. User avatar kathaleen.mcclure87 says:

      2 stars
Honestly, I think it sounds too simple. Recipes should be more complex to be good. Maybe I’ll just stick to my usual.

    2. 5 stars
I tried it and it was delicious! Super easy to make, just follow the steps. You won’t regret it!

  74. User avatar Gaius Helen Mohiam says:

This recipe is amazing! My family loved it. Will definitely make again.

    1. User avatar roosevelt.rogahn says:

      5 stars
I’m so glad to hear that! It’s a family favorite in my house too. What sides did you serve with it?

    2. User avatar edris.rath97 says:

      2 stars
Did you really like it that much? I tried it and thought it was kinda bland…

  75. User avatar scot.heidenreich48 says:

    1 star
I burnt the chicken. 😭 What did I do wrong?!

  76. User avatar toby.dietrich says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but the breadcrumb mix felt a bit bland—could use more garlic/Italian seasoning. Also 20 minutes didn’t fully cook my thick breasts.

  77. User avatar gregg.ebert95 says:

    5 stars
The cheese + marinara step is EVERYTHING. That bubbly mozzarella look is exactly what I wanted. Super comfort food.

  78. User avatar angelika.vandervort73 says:

    4 stars
This is a basic recipe but it works. Great if you’re super busy yet want to eat well.

    1. User avatar Deep Thought says:

      2 stars
I dunno, seems kinda boring to me. Why not spice it up a bit? Like add some veggies or something? Just saying…

    2. 5 stars
Totally agree! Sometimes simple is the best. I’ve made this on super busy weeknights and it never disappoints. My kids love it too!

  79. 5 stars
This was sooo good! My family gobbled it up. I added some spinach too. Yummy!

  80. User avatar waldo.abernathy says:

Baked chicken? My mom would fry it. Doesn’t seem right to me. But tasted good! 🤷‍♂️

    1. User avatar dean.walter says:

      4 stars
I get what you mean! Frying does give it a nice crispy texture. But sometimes baked can be just as tasty! Glad you liked it! 👍

  81. User avatar kyle.williamson says:

    2 stars
Why do people always use boneless chicken? The bones give flavor! 🤔

  82. 3 stars
Not sure about this one. Chicken was kinda dry. Maybe I cooked it too long?

    1. User avatar eldora.dickinson2004 says:

      4 stars
I think you might have just overcooked it a bit! Chicken can dry out fast if left too long. Maybe try lowering the oven temp next time?

  83. 5 stars
This was so delicious! My family loved it. Definitely a keeper! 🍗❤️

  84. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

Why no egg? I swear my coating wouldn’t stick until I pressed it on more. Once I did that it worked. Recipe’s okay.

No egg seems a bit off to me. Usually you need something like egg or a proper flour dredge for that crust. That said, if you baked it and it came out crispy, I guess it works—just maybe not consistently.

I wondered the same thing about the egg 😅 but honestly the melted butter + pressing it down makes sense. If your coating stuck after more pressure, I’d call that a win.

Tasty and simple. But where’s the basil? I forgot mine. 😅

I forgot the basil too! It still tasted great without it. Who needs basil anyway? 😂

Pretty solid flavor combo. I was skeptical about baking instead of frying, but 400°F worked and it didn’t dry out. Will make again.

Confession: I forgot the basil garnish (oops), but the rest was still amazing. Also I think I might’ve used salted butter and it was slightly salty—watch your salt level.

Haha same—fate of the basil garnish 😅 But honestly the salted-butter note is super helpful. I’ll definitely watch that salt since the Parmesan + butter can already add plenty.

Nope. 400°F for only 20 minutes and then 5 more? That math doesn’t work for me. Probably depends on the chicken size, but still.

I get what you mean, but 400°F for ~20 min + ~5 min is pretty standard for thinner chicken breasts. If yours are big/thick, add a few minutes and use a thermometer (165°F in the thickest part).

Yeah, that timing felt off to me too. I’d say preheat longer and bake like 30 minutes first—20 minutes never cooks the middle for me. Unless you pound them thin, don’t trust the timer.

Did I mention I burnt mine? Followed instructions and it still got charred 😭
