Crispy Pea Fritters

March 5, 2025

Crispy pea fritters are a delicious and healthy twist on the traditional fritter, bringing together the sweetness of peas and a crispy golden exterior. These fritters are light, satisfying, and packed with flavor, making them a perfect appetizer, snack, or side dish. Whether you’re looking to enjoy them as a light lunch, a fun party treat, or as a way to use up leftover peas, these fritters are sure to be a hit.

The base of the fritters consists of fresh or frozen peas, lightly mashed to create a texture that’s both smooth and slightly chunky. The peas are mixed with a variety of fresh herbs, such as mint, parsley, or dill, which add brightness and depth to the flavor. A touch of grated Parmesan or crumbled feta cheese enhances the savory element, while garlic and shallots provide a delicate but bold flavor profile.

The fritter mixture is then bound together with a combination of flour, egg, and a dash of baking powder, ensuring they hold their shape when fried. Once the mixture is formed into patties, they are shallow-fried until golden brown and crispy on the outside while remaining soft and tender on the inside. The result is a perfectly balanced bite with a satisfying crunch, followed by the sweetness of peas and the freshness of herbs.

Crispy pea fritters are incredibly versatile. They can be enjoyed on their own, served with a dollop of tangy yogurt or a creamy dip like tzatziki. For a heartier meal, pair them with a side salad or even a poached egg on top. These fritters also make a great addition to brunch menus or casual gatherings, where they’ll surely be devoured by guests of all ages.

Whether you’re looking for a vegetarian snack or just want to incorporate more greens into your diet, crispy pea fritters are a fun and tasty way to do so.

These are delicious! I made them for a family gathering and they disappeared quickly!

  2. 3 stars
Not bad, but mine came out a little soft in the middle. Next time I’ll flatten thinner and maybe cook a minute longer. Flavor is still solid.

  3. User avatar kylee.will says:

    4 stars
I omitted the egg for a vegan version and they still taste great!

  4. 5 stars
Another great recipe from this site! I’ll def be making these again soon!

  5. User avatar Arica Schamberger III says:

    4 stars
The batter felt thick even after mixing—maybe my milk was smaller? I ended up adding a splash more milk and it helped. Crispy though!

  6. 2 stars
Crispy Pea Fritters? More like mushy pea blobs! 😂

  7. User avatar Dr. Ruben Bruen says:

    2 stars
My first batch burned before they cooked through 😅. Medium-high might be too hot for my stove. Next time I’m going lower and cooking longer. Still, I liked the idea.

    1. 4 stars
Ahh I’m sorry about that—burned before fully cooked is the worst 😅 Going lower makes a lot of sense. I usually do closer to medium (not medium-high) and give them a bit longer until they’re nicely golden and set in the middle.

  8. 2 stars
These were kinda bland to me 😕. Also I accidentally used regular milk instead of low fat and idk if that made it worse. Will try again with more seasoning.

  9. User avatar raul.robel1950 says:

    4 stars
I followed it pretty closely, but I think my pan was hotter than medium-high—mine browned fast and needed less time. Still tasty, though!

  10. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

    4 stars
Yummy! I swapped the peas for chickpeas and they were so good! 🥳

  11. User avatar gwenda.kuhn2025 says:

    3 stars
Not bad at all, but I thought they’d be more flavorful. I might add garlic or a pinch of chili next time. Texture was nice though.

    1. 5 stars
Totally get that! I’ve found a little garlic (or even garlic powder) really wakes up the flavor. A pinch of chili sounds perfect too—next time I’ll try that.

    2. 4 stars
Mmm yeah, mine were kinda bland once. I think it might be the salt/pepper—also I used dried herbs one time and it wasn’t as good. But texture is definitely on point!

  12. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

    5 stars
Super easy to make! I added some garlic powder for an extra kick. Will make again.

  13. User avatar leda.dickens says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about using only flour + egg for structure, but it worked enough. Texture is nice, though I wish it had more seasoning—especially salt.

  14. 4 stars
Pretty solid recipe. I used frozen peas and they worked great after thawing. Next time I might add a pinch more salt though—felt a touch bland without it.

    1. User avatar Sabre Cat says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—mine came out a little bland too. I added extra salt and a bit more black pepper and it made a big difference. Also loved the peas + herbs combo.

  15. User avatar pasquale.stamm1983 says:

    5 stars
These came out super crispy! I used frozen peas straight after thawing and they still tasted fresh. The herb combo (mint + parsley) is the move.

    1. User avatar alita.gleichner2023 says:

      5 stars
Love hearing they stayed crisp! I’ve been nervous about using frozen peas, but your note makes me want to try it exactly like you did. Mint + parsley really does make everything brighter—definitely next time.

  16. User avatar shayna.grady29 says:

    3 stars
What are fresh herbs? Can I use dried? Asking for a friend.

  17. User avatar Gormlaith says:

    5 stars
These were super easy to make! I added some cheese for extra flavor. Yum!

  18. 5 stars
A nice change from usual veggie patties. Fresh and flavorful!

    1. User avatar blake.keebler11 says:

      5 stars
I made these last night! They were amazing, my kids even loved them! 😍

  19. 2 stars
Not sure why everyone is raving. Mine turned out mushy. Too much milk maybe?

  20. User avatar wilson.marvin says:

    2 stars
Mine didn’t get crispy, more like soft patties. I’m thinking my oil temp was too low or I over-floured the surface when spooning. Still tasty with yogurt.

  21. User avatar ladonna.cole says:

    2 stars
I dunno, mine just fell apart. Maybe I did something wrong? I followed the recipe.

    1. 4 stars
Don’t worry, it happens! Maybe the batter was too thin? Try adding a bit more flour next time.

  22. User avatar simon.sauer says:

    1 star
Pea fritters? That’s just weird. Fritters should be made of potatoes or meat. Just saying! 🙄

  23. User avatar millard.price50 says:

    1 star
I have no idea what went wrong, but mine burnt to a crisp! Should I use less heat?

  24. User avatar gerda.blick1 says:

    3 stars
Followed the recipe exactly but my fritters ended up chewy. What did I do wrong?

    1. User avatar ben.kunze17 says:

      4 stars
Maybe you overmixed the batter? That can make them tough. Try folding gently next time!

  25. User avatar veronique.champlin62 says:

    2 stars
Not sure about these. They kinda fell apart when frying. Maybe too much milk?

  26. User avatar melania.moen19 says:

    4 stars
Not what I expected. Peas in fritters? Sounds weird but surprisingly good!

    1. 5 stars
I’m glad you liked them! They really are a hidden gem, aren’t they? Peas just give it a kick!

  27. User avatar noel.denesik32 says:

    2 stars
A little dry for my taste, maybe I shoulda added more milk. 🤷‍♂️

    1. User avatar lowell.dibbert says:

      4 stars
Maybe try using less flour next time! I usually add more herbs too for extra flavor. 🍃

  28. User avatar petra.runte84 says:

These turned out so crispy! The herbs really make them pop—mint + parsley is a great combo. I served them with yogurt and it felt restaurant-level.

  29. User avatar charleen.wolff72 says:

    2 stars
They came out really oily, not sure if I did it right.

  30. User avatar Dr. Refugio Hane says:

    Crispy!

  31. User avatar molly.turner1969 says:

These fritters are AMAZING! So crispy and full of flavor. I added some garlic to the mix, and they were even better. Worth the time!

    1. User avatar ingeborg.mcdermott says:

      5 stars
So glad you loved them! Garlic is a great idea! Can’t wait to try it that way too. 😍

    2. User avatar Flame Atronach says:

      2 stars
I tried making these last night and they turned out terrible. I think I added too much flour? Can someone please help me?

  32. User avatar mitch.vonrueden59 says:

    5 stars
I added some cheese to the batter! It was so gooood! 😋

  33. 2 stars
Honestly, I didn’t love the texture—more like veggie pancakes than fritters. Maybe I whisked too long? Still edible though.

    1. User avatar kazuko.davis98 says:

      4 stars
I get what you mean—if the batter sits or gets overmixed, mine can turn a bit more “pancake-y” than crisp fritter. Next time I’d mix just until smooth and make sure they’re cooked hot enough (golden brown first side before flipping). Still love these with a yogurt dip though!

  34. User avatar garfield.jones says:

    2 stars
so easy and quick to make, but i’m not a fan of the taste. too green for me.

  35. User avatar basementDweller says:

    5 stars
These turned out way crispier than I expected. The mint + parsley combo is so fresh—made me want to snack on them straight off the pan.

    1. 5 stars
Wow, that sounds exactly right—mint + parsley really does make savory snacks feel so light. I’m trying these next weekend!

    2. User avatar emile.franecki40 says:

      3 stars
Crispier than expected is good, but mine were kinda burnt on the outside before the peas got tender… I think my oil was too hot? Next time I’ll go more medium and maybe add a splash more milk.

  36. User avatar elden.hansen1981 says:

    3 stars
I don’t have olive oil so I used veggie oil, hope that’s ok?

  37. 4 stars
Fryin’ them right, they’re crispy as they say. Good snack!

  38. User avatar deloise.cummings says:

    5 stars
These are amazing! The herbs really make them pop! Will definitely make again.

    1. User avatar Breanne Hermiston V says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! The herbs do elevate it! I can’t wait to try making them myself!

  39. User avatar Arthur Philip Deodat says:

    2 stars
Way too much pepper for my taste. I’d start with half next time. Other than that, the herbs and peas were an awesome combo.

  40. User avatar sherlyn.heller99 says:

    2 stars
I don’t know… they turned out kind of mushy. Maybe I did something wrong.

  41. User avatar carlena.morar says:

    5 stars
Crispy and delicious! These went fast at my dinner party! 10/10.

    1. User avatar leanna.ryan says:

      5 stars
I made these and they turned out perfect! So crispy and tasty, just like you said. Will definitely make again. 😋

  42. User avatar Evan Lee Arps says:

    4 stars
Super easy recipe, loved the fresh herbs! This is a winner for a light lunch. Will make it again!

  43. User avatar delta.champlin says:

    1 star
Crispy? More like soggy. Did I use the wrong kind of peas? Disappointed.

    1. User avatar tammy.lemke says:

      4 stars
Maybe your oil wasn’t hot enough? That can make them soggy. I’ve had success with this recipe before!

    2. User avatar hobert.auer2005 says:

      3 stars
I don’t think it’s the peas! I get mine from a can and it worked fine. Did you follow the frying times?

  44. User avatar cruz.schumm1984 says:

    1 star
Crispy pea fritters? Sounds kinda weird, but okay! lol

  45. User avatar noel.howell33 says:

    4 stars
Yummy! They are like little green pancakes but better! Also, I didn’t have herbs, so I skipped them 😅.

  46. User avatar hortense.wunsch21 says:

    3 stars
Not bad for a veggie dish. I’m not a fan of peas usually but these were okay. Might try with broccoli next time.

  47. 3 stars
Good recipe but instructions are a little vague. Like how hot is medium-high? I ended up switching to 2-3 minutes per side instead of 4, otherwise they got dark before cooking through.

  48. User avatar charolette.howe51 says:

    4 stars
I don’t get why people like pea fritters—peas are already sweet and then they’re in fried batter?? But I tried them anyway. Surprisingly good.

  49. 5 stars
These were shockingly good—crispy outside, still sweet inside. I added a pinch of garlic and it bumped the flavor a lot. Will make again!

  50. User avatar esmeralda.klein98 says:

    2 stars
I followed the recipe, but mine turned out soggy. Maybe I added too much milk?

  51. 2 stars
I’m not convinced about the amount of flour—mine came out a bit dense. Next time I’ll try a touch less flour and more milk.

  52. User avatar joel.schaden says:

    4 stars
I thought this was gonna be bad, but it was surprisingly good! Who knew pea fritters could be tasty?

    1. 5 stars
I can’t believe how tasty they were either! Totally gonna make these again, thanks for sharing!

  53. 5 stars
These came out so crispy! I was worried the peas would make them mushy, but they held together perfectly. The herbs really brighten everything.

    1. User avatar lavern.nolan38 says:

      5 stars
Mine always turn out soggy with peas, so I’m impressed—guess I’ll have to try the medium-high and not overcrowd the pan. The herbs tip sounds spot on too.

  54. User avatar bruno.deckow says:

    5 stars
Made these tonight—so crispy on the outside and surprisingly tasty inside. The mint + parsley combo is genius. I used frozen peas and just thawed them well, worked perfectly.

    1. User avatar annita.crist says:

      5 stars
Yes!! I just made a batch too and wow—same experience: super crunchy outside. I didn’t think peas could get that good. Mint + parsley really lifts it.

    2. User avatar loyce.kassulke1953 says:

      3 stars
Not to be rude but mine didn’t crisp as much… I think I used too much batter? Like I probably should have pressed them flatter. Still tasted good though, and the herbs were nice. Next time I’ll try medium heat.

  55. User avatar donnell.mclaughlin84 says:

    3 stars
Crispy but too bland for my taste. I think it needs more seasoning. 🤷‍♂️

  56. 3 stars
Not bad! Batter was a little thick for my pan, so my fritters took longer. Also I burned the first batch oops (medium-high is no joke).

    1. User avatar edwin.bayer says:

      5 stars
Oof, burning the first batch happens 😅 Medium-high really can be brutal. Next time try a touch lower heat and thinner batter—maybe add 1–2 tbsp extra milk. Glad they still turned out though!

    2. User avatar mickey.feeney7 says:

      3 stars
Mine were also kinda thick. I think the peas need to be mashed a bit or you’ll get gummy fritters. Also, 3-4 minutes is too long for me on a normal stove—more like 2-3. Not bad recipe, just needs adjustments.

  57. 4 stars
So easy. Love peas anyway. Crispyyyyy.

  58. User avatar casandra.cartwright says:

    2 stars
Mine stuck a bit even though I used non-stick. Maybe I didn’t let the oil get hot enough. I’ll try again—won’t give up.

  59. User avatar gerard.purdy says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but they were a little bland for me. I added extra pepper and a squeeze of lemon and it helped a lot.

    1. User avatar denver.oberbrunner says:

      5 stars
Glad that helped! I think peas can be mild, so bumping the pepper + a bit of lemon is a great fix. Did you add the lemon to the batter or just on top?

    2. User avatar Dan Hesho says:

      3 stars
Huh, mine were kinda bland too. I didn’t even think lemon would help, but maybe the herbs need more salt? Next time I’ll try extra pepper like you said—maybe the measurements are off.

  60. User avatar liberal.hero says:

    3 stars
I used frozen peas straight from the freezer by accident (oops). They were a little watery, but I squeezed them dry and it improved.

  61. User avatar robby.adams says:

    4 stars
The batter felt thick—almost like cookie dough. I added a splash more milk and that fixed it. Crisped nicely after that.

    1. User avatar wendie.moore says:

      4 stars
Hmm I tried these and my batter was thick too, but I didn’t add milk—maybe that’s why mine came out kinda bready. Next time I’ll try your trick. Also I used frozen peas straight from the bag… my bad lol.

    2. User avatar chris.jakubowski19 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—when the peas are extra firm/thawed unevenly, it can go from fritter batter to cookie dough real fast. Love that you fixed it with a splash more milk!

  62. User avatar Gaius Helen Mohiam says:

    4 stars
So simple and delicious! I added some garlic powder for extra flavor. Yum!

    1. User avatar Mary Weimann DVM says:

      5 stars
Garlic powder? That’s a great idea! I love when recipes let us get creative. Can’t wait to try it with that twist!

  63. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    5 stars
Super easy and quick dinner idea. I served them with yogurt + lemon and it felt like a fancy appetizer.

    1. User avatar ralph.kling says:

      5 stars
These are actually dangerously easy 😄 The yogurt + lemon tip is spot on—felt like a fancy little starter without much work. I used frozen peas straight from thawing and they still crisped well.

    2. User avatar rena.dubuque says:

      3 stars
I tried this but mine came out kinda soft in the middle. I think my oil wasn’t hot enough? Also my batter seemed thicker than yours—maybe I should’ve added a splash more milk. Still tasty though, just not super crispy.

  64. 4 stars
Pretty easy and the herbs really make it. I used frozen peas straight from thawing and they held up fine. Mine took closer to 5 minutes per side though.

  65. 3 stars
Mine didn’t get super crispy… more like pan-fried pancakes 😅 Still tasty, but next time I’ll try hotter oil and maybe squeeze out extra moisture from the peas.

    1. 2 stars
Mine was kinda bland and not crispy either. I think 2 tbsp oil isn’t enough? And “golden brown and crispy” is a vague target 😬 I’ll try more oil or a thicker batter next time. Anyone else add cheese or something?

    2. User avatar kaleigh.marquardt26 says:

      5 stars
Totally get that 😅 I’ve noticed if the peas have extra moisture, the fritters turn more “pancake-y” than crispy. Squeezing/dabbing them dry (or even letting them steam off a bit) helps a lot. Also, I do go hotter than medium—like a solid medium-high—so the outsides crisp before they steam.

  66. 2 stars
I don’t know what I did wrong, but mine turned out soggy. Maybe I used too many peas? Anyone else have this issue?

    1. 4 stars
I had the same problem! I think it might be the moisture from the peas. Did you drain them well? Sometimes even frozen peas retain water.

  67. User avatar basementDweller says:

    5 stars
These fritters are AMAZING!! I made them for a picnic and everyone loved them! Definitely making again!

  68. User avatar kasey.brakus31 says:

    3 stars
Does it really need that much flour? I think it could be less.

  69. User avatar Luci Nikolaus says:

    4 stars
I followed it pretty closely and got good results. Mine browned a bit faster, so I’d say keep an eye on the heat. Would definitely make again for brunch.

  70. User avatar eleanora.rath11 says:

    4 stars
I just use green beans instead of peas. It worked fine. Yumm!

  71. User avatar Cleta Kuhlman says:

    5 stars
Yum! I added some cheese to the batter and it was amazing!

  72. 4 stars
I didn’t have fresh herbs, so I subbed dried (like… a lot). It was fine but not the same vibe. Fresh herbs matter here.

  73. User avatar trevor.windler says:

    5 stars
These fritters were a hit with my family! Crispy and delicious!

    1. User avatar luther.hartmann96 says:

      5 stars
I’m so glad your family enjoyed them! They are super easy to make too!

  74. User avatar ray.bergstrom57 says:

    3 stars
I only had dried parsley (no mint). They were okay, but the flavor wasn’t as bright. Would definitely do fresh herbs next time.

  75. 3 stars
Good, but I think my batter was a bit thick? They stayed kind of bready instead of super crisp. Maybe I needed a splash more milk or to flatten them thinner.

    1. 5 stars
That sounds exactly like the batter consistency issue. I’ve found a tiny splash of milk (or even a teaspoon of water) helps it spread a bit more so they crisp up instead of staying bready. Also make sure you really flatten the spoonfuls—mine were much better once I pressed them thinner.

    2. 3 stars
Hmm maybe—mine always turn out crispy but I tend to use more like 1/2 cup milk than 1/4 cup? Not sure if that’s why. Also do you maybe cook on too low heat? If the oil isn’t hot enough they’ll go bread-y. Just my 2 cents.

  76. User avatar michel.swift says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about peas in fritters, but they’re actually really tasty. The seasoning is simple and good.

  77. User avatar pamella.gottlieb60 says:

    4 stars
I followed it pretty closely, but my batter was thicker than expected. Still tasted great, just needed slightly longer cooking time to brown evenly.

  78. 4 stars
Pretty good but mine weren’t super crispy—more like golden. I think my skillet wasn’t hot enough. Still tasty with yogurt.

  79. 5 stars
Can’t believe peas can be this good. I served them with yogurt and garlic like my neighbor suggested—gone in minutes.

    1. User avatar clyde.mueller68 says:

      3 stars
Hmm peas fritters? I always thought peas were kinda bland… I guess the herbs help. Did you thaw frozen peas all the way or just rinse? Mine got a little mushy before.

    2. User avatar josphine.farrell says:

      5 stars
Right?! I tried these with yogurt + garlic too and they disappeared so fast it was suspicious 😂 The crispy outside is legit.

  80. User avatar Ms. Jessie Gottlieb says:

    4 stars
I love peas, and these fritters are a game changer! So crunchy 😍
