Classic Dry Martini

September 30, 2025

A classic dry martini is more than just a cocktail – it’s a symbol of timeless elegance. With its crystal-clear appearance, crisp flavor, and refined simplicity, it has earned its place as one of the most iconic drinks in the world. Whether sipped as a pre-dinner aperitif or enjoyed as the centerpiece of a sophisticated evening, the dry martini captures the essence of minimalism done right.

At its core, the martini is a beautifully balanced mix of gin and dry vermouth, stirred or shaken with ice until perfectly chilled and served in a sleek stemmed glass. A twist of lemon peel or a single green olive is all it needs for garnish, adding a final touch of aroma and character. The result is clean, botanical, and bracing, a drink that’s refreshing yet bold, understated yet powerful. Every sip offers a smooth blend of juniper-forward gin and the delicate herbal notes of vermouth, creating a flavor profile that’s both classic and endlessly satisfying.

The beauty of the dry martini lies in its versatility. Some prefer a higher proportion of gin for a more robust drink, while others enjoy a slightly wetter version with a more pronounced vermouth character. The garnish itself can change the personality of the cocktail, a lemon twist gives it a bright, citrusy lift, while an olive adds a subtle savory depth. Even the choice between stirring and shaking influences the final texture and clarity, though purists tend to favor a gentle stir for a silky, crystal-clear result.

Beyond its taste, the martini is steeped in cultural significance. It has been the drink of choice for writers, actors, and style icons for more than a century, appearing in countless films and novels as a symbol of sophistication and cool confidence. But despite its glamorous reputation, it’s also remarkably approachable, a drink that requires just a few ingredients and a moment of care to craft. Whether you enjoy it at a bustling cocktail bar or quietly at home, a classic dry martini is more than a cocktail, it’s an experience, a ritual, and a timeless toast to simplicity and style.

I tried it with vodka instead of gin, and it was terrible. Stick to the recipe.

I dunno, vodka’s not that bad! You just have to get used to it. Maybe add more vermouth next time?

    2. 4 stars
Yeah, I’ve made the same mistake! Stick to gin for that classic taste.

This was the best martini I’ve ever made! So refreshing.

  8. User avatar shanae.ullrich2020 says:

Very easy to make! I used a jigger for measuring, no guesswork!

  9. User avatar harlan.dooley says:

I don’t get it. What’s the difference between this and just gin? 🤔

  10. User avatar machelle.schumm55 says:

You forgot to mention you need a fancy glass. LOL. Got mine from my grandma.

    1. 5 stars
Haha, right? The glass makes it way fancier! I’m gonna steal my grandma’s too! 😂

    2. User avatar neville.lemke says:

Fancy glass? It doesn’t matter, it’s all about the drink, right? Who needs all that.

  11. User avatar fermin.kertzmann38 says:

Why would anyone put an olive in a martini? Gross. Stick with lemon.

  12. User avatar mandy.hickle88 says:

    2 stars
I made it and it was way too boozy. Maybe my ice was warm? Also I stirred for like 20 minutes (oops). Still, better than store-bought.

    1. User avatar stacey.collins says:

      4 stars
Yeah, warm-ish ice would definitely mellow the chill and make it taste more boozy. And stirring 20 minutes is… a choice 😅 I usually do like 20–30 seconds max for a classic dry martini vibe.

  13. 3 stars
Dry vermouth? I thought martinis were basically gin + vibes 😅 Ended up delicious, but I might cut the vermouth a touch next time.

    1. User avatar Golda Feil says:

      5 stars
Haha yep, gin + vibes is the whole spirit of it 😄 Glad it still came out delicious—cutting back the vermouth next time is a great move if you want it even more crisp and “dry.”

  14. 2 stars
Classic dry martini? Sure. But gin brands change everything. I used something cheap and it tasted like plant water.

  15. User avatar shawn.kirlin1950 says:

    5 stars
Yum! I had my first martini at a bar last week, and I’m excited to make it at home now. Thanks!

    1. User avatar Feyd-Rautha Rabban says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome! Enjoy making it at home. A martini was my first cocktail too! 🍸

    2. 3 stars
Really? Is it that easy? I thought cocktails required more ingredients. Might try it if I can find the vermouth.

  16. User avatar Galaxia Woonbeam says:

    meh

    1. User avatar vilma.mayert says:

      2 stars
meh same 😅 I like mine a little colder and sometimes with an extra splash of vermouth. Also I never get the garnish right—either lemon twist or olive every time lol

    2. User avatar brendon.wintheiser28 says:

      3 stars
Honestly I get it—“meh” for a dry martini feels a bit like saying a great song is “okay.” If your gin/vermouth brand isn’t solid, it can be kinda harsh. What were you using?

  17. 4 stars
I followed the measurements but I think my vermouth was a bit old. Still good though—clean flavor, and it didn’t taste watered down. Next time I’ll chill the glass longer.

  18. User avatar dwayne.waters says:

    4 stars
Two thumbs up! Loved the lemon twist. Makes it so refreshing!

  19. User avatar Frostbite Spider says:

    3 stars
This recipe just feels old-fashioned. I need something fancier!

    1. 4 stars
I actually love the classic vibes! Sometimes simpler is better. Why not try it with some flavored gin to spice things up?

  20. User avatar trevor.labadie73 says:

    3 stars
Seems too simple. I like my martinis dirty. Where’s the olive juice? 🤔

  21. User avatar gennie.walker91 says:

    5 stars
This is my go-to now. Quick, classic, and it doesn’t taste sweet at all. Love it!

  22. User avatar Wellington Yueh says:

    4 stars
Good instructions, but “1 piece lemon twist” is so vague—how big are we talking? Mine was tiny and barely smelled.

  23. 4 stars
I don’t get why people argue lemon vs olive. Both are fine, but I swear lemon makes it taste more “fresh” and the olive feels more rich.

  24. User avatar cedrick.kuhn1976 says:

    5 stars
Simple and exactly how I like it—cold, crisp, and not trying too hard. The lemon twist makes it feel extra bright.

  25. User avatar leopoldo.paucek93 says:

    5 stars
This is the best martini recipe I’ve ever tried! Perfect balance of gin and vermouth. Cheers!

  26. 4 stars
Good but I made it with vodka instead of gin. Is that still a martini??

  27. User avatar bobbie.gibson2001 says:

    1 star
One olive or twist and call it a day—this is basic. I want more flavor, not just ice-water gin.

  28. User avatar willis.rowe says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but I’m surprised it only calls for 0.5 oz vermouth. Dry means dry, I guess—still could’ve used more balance.

  29. User avatar danyell.gutkowski2000 says:

    5 stars
Super clean and classic. I used a good London Dry gin and it tasted crisp, not syrupy. The lemon twist makes it pop.

  30. User avatar Hotblack Desiato says:

    3 stars
Dry martinis are not really my thing, but I can see why people love them. Mine tasted a little too “boozy” at first.

  31. 3 stars
Stirring only—no shaking? I tried shaking once and it felt more “cocktail-y,” not that this is wrong, just different.

    1. User avatar brandee.metz says:

      3 stars
I always shake my martinis. Maybe I’m just not good at stirring for long enough 😅 But I like the frothy vibe… lemon twist if I’m feeling fancy, olive if I’m being lazy.

    2. User avatar sona.mueller1986 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—stirring keeps it silky and less aerated. Shaking can make it colder “faster,” but it also changes the texture and can mute the gin a bit.

  32. User avatar lane.cassin0 says:

    2 stars
Okay but… you HAVE to use gin?? Like vodka martini would be better right? Idk, just sayin.

  33. 5 stars
Classic martini done right! Anyone know why vermouth is even used?

  34. 2 stars
Eh, not my favorite. I prefer cocktails with fruit. Too much alcohol for me.

    1. User avatar ronny.botsford says:

      4 stars
I get where you’re coming from! Cocktails with fruit add a nice twist. But a classic martini has its own charm! 🍸

  35. User avatar dion.keeling51 says:

    2 stars
I followed the recipe exactly but it turned out way too strong for my taste. Can someone recommend a lighter version?

  36. User avatar noah.wiegand60 says:

    4 stars
Not bad, but I’m not sure 0.5 oz vermouth is “dry” enough. Next time I’ll cut it to like 1/8 oz so it’s more gin-forward.

    1. User avatar Restless Draugr says:

      4 stars
Totally get what you mean—0.5 oz can make it a bit less “bone-dry” depending on the vermouth brand. If you want it gin-forward, try reducing vermouth a lot (or even 1/8 oz like you said) and see how it tastes to you.

  37. User avatar marylouise.ruecker78 says:

    5 stars
Clean and classic. The 2.5/0.5 ratio nails that crisp, dry vibe. I used a lemon twist and it smelled amazing—great go-to.

  38. User avatar vallie.connelly says:

    3 stars
Could you not measure? Like just splash until it looks right? (I mean… i know that’s not precise.) I did the math this time and it was better.

  39. User avatar conrad.oconnell26 says:

    2 stars
I don’t get why people are so serious about garnishes. Lemon twist, olive, whatever—gin + vermouth should be enough.

    1. User avatar magaly.schaefer94 says:

      5 stars
Disagree 😅 The lemon twist oils give a noticeable hit of brightness right at the nose, and the olive brine can change the final sip a lot. If you skip it, it’s like serving food with no salt. Also I tried skipping once—wasn’t the same.

    2. User avatar steve_maga says:

      4 stars
Totally fair—if you’re just after the core gin + vermouth balance, the drink’s already doing the heavy lifting. The garnish is more like aroma/finishing than flavor.

  40. User avatar sherita.cummerata says:

    3 stars
I tried it with vodka instead of gin, and it worked out ok.
